CHEMICALS Allow up to 2 weeks for delivery
Direct Delivery
All chemicals are delivered directly from our supplier, and therefore next day delivery is not available. Please allow up to 2 weeks for delivery. As chemicals are packed and shipped separately from any other products ordered from Philip Harris, they will be subject to their own carriage charge. You will be informed of this charge at the point of order. See terms and conditions for details.
Special Transport
Freight Surcharge
Several chemicals in our range fall into the most hazardous category for transport and may only be carried by specially trained drivers. This has forced us to place a Carriage Surcharge (applied to the consignment, not the individual material) on these particular chemicals.
Non-UK Mainland Customers (Including Northern Ireland and UK ‘Island’ areas) All orders to these areas will be subject to additional charges, to cover the additional costs of shipping and packaging required to comply with prevailing legislation on the transport of dangerous goods.
Disposal of Unwanted or Waste Chemicals For any queries regarding returning or disposing of chemicals, please call our disposal service on 0845 6060 558. Chemicals should not be returned to Philip Harris, as this may breach current legislation and your school will be liable for any subsequent disposal and handling charges. Please read all of the following points carefully before placing your chemicals order.
Chemicals Chemicals are subject to growing and constantly changing legislation governing all areas including supply, use, storage and disposal. Failure to comply with this legislation can result in serious legal proceedings and penalties, and places additional obligations on you as the purchaser and Philip Harris (and our agents) as the supplier. Due to prevailing legislation and security considerations, chemicals cannot be supplied to private individuals.
Points on ordering chemicals a. Many chemicals have a limited shelf life b. Please do not order more chemicals than you require c. Disposal of unwanted or excess chemicals is covered by extensive legislation and has become a specialized business (see opposite)
Ethanol permits.
Security At Philip Harris we recognise that chemicals represent a major hazard for schools and act responsibly to reduce the risk they represent. We only use UN approved packaging, with the appropriate hazard warnings and delivery note clearly visible on the outside. So when chemicals arrive at a school it is clear what they are, helping staff to deal with them promptly and safely. For the latest SDS sheets, please see www.philipharris.co.uk or email techsupport@philipharris.co.uk.
Purity and molarity Some chemicals, irrespective of grade, contain additives such as an anti-caking agent. This has no appreciable effect on the chemical behaviour of the substance, but does affect the amount that must be weighed out to achieve solutions of accurate molarity. E.g. copper sulfate-5-water is 98% pure, so a 1M solution requires 249.68 ÷ 0.98 = 254.78g to be dissolved in 1 litre. Allow to settle or filter to remove any insoluble component.
As of 1st July 2013, academic customers (as defined by our sale of chemicals policy) may purchase upto 5 litres of IDA per annum without requiring authorisation from HM Revenue & Customs. Those customers who wish to purchase more than this must obtain a permit to do so. HMRC Glasgow can be contacted on 0141 555 3586.
