FIELD GUIDE · PRIMARY-SOURCE RETRIEVAL

1. The urban core: three courts, twelve municipalities The core of the city is divided among the First, Second and Third Basic Courts. Each court keeps the records for its own municipalities only. Court

3. Practical implications for primary-source retrieval Jurisdictional boundary Records follow the person’s registered residence (prebivalište) or the locus of the act. If that is Sopot, Barajevo, Obrenovac, Lazarevac or Mladenovac, searching the First, Second and Third Basic Courts will return no record. Route the search to the respective outer basic court.

Higher court oversight

Viši sud u Beogradu High Court in Belgrade · Savska 17a, Palata pravde

Every basic court in this guide sits under the High Court in Belgrade. It takes appeals from the basic courts and hears serious felonies at first instance: offences carrying a possible sentence of more than 10 years. For those cases, the record starts at Savska 17a, not at the basic court.

Change ahead: 1 March 2027 A Fourth Basic Court in Belgrade (Četvrti osnovni sud u Beogradu) takes over Zemun and Surčin. The Third Basic Court keeps Novi Beograd. Pending cases and archives are being divided between the two courts, so check which court holds older files.
