We greatly anticipate during this Avent Season the coming of Jesus Christ in a “Big Way”.

BE A GIFT TO SOMEONE During this time of the year, we are reminded of the “Greatest Gift of All”. We are reminded of God’s love for us and his gift to us, “The Christ Child”, his only begotten son. With the simplest and most inexpensive gifts, we can encourage others and show our love and goodwill by: projecting a positive image; extending a smile to someone who is sad; giving a compliment; being a good listener; nurturing talent in a young person; volunteering your talent by helping an organization or school; or by mentoring a child, a student, or a new mother. The Bible says to encourage one another, to love and to build each other up.

LOVE Love is a thing of the will. It is an act. It is a fruit that the Holy Spirit produces in us as God’s children.

Love is sacrificial. Love is giving up of a valued thing for the sake of something else more important, worthy and urgent. Love is the willing sacrificial giving of oneself for the benefit of another without thought of return. The bible puts it this way: “No! Love your enemies and do good to them; lend and expect nothing back. You will then have a great reward, and you will be children of the Most High God. For he is good to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful just as your Father is merciful.” Luke 6:3536. Love is patient. A patient person never gives up. The word patient also means long-suffering: not in strife but patient with others. Patience also means endurance. To suffer, to undergo pain, hardship, difficulties, problems without giving up. “JOY TO THE WORLD THE LORD HAS COME”

WHAT IS ADVENT? The word "Advent" comes from a Latin word that means "coming." The Christian Advent tradition celebrates the coming of Jesus to earth through His birth in Bethlehem.

In most church calendar traditions, Advent officially begins on the fourth Sunday before December 25 (though many modern Advent calendars begin December 1).

Each of the four Sundays of the Advent is remembered through the use of particular practices. The specific practices, readings, and meaning of the candles in the Advent wreaths, if wreaths are used, may vary among churches.

For many, the first Sunday includes the lighting of a candle and readings on the theme of hope from the Old Testament. The second Sunday includes readings from the manger and prophecies about the birth of Jesus and focuses on the theme of the prophets. The third Sunday is also known as Gaudete Sunday (named after the first Latin word in Philippians 4:4, which is read). It focuses on joy and the theme of the shepherds. The fourth Sunday focuses on readings from the announcement of the Savior's birth. It is also known as the angels' candle. Many Advent candle wreaths also include a center fifth candle. This candle is known as the Christ candle that is lit during a special Christmas Eve gathering.

Is Advent biblical? The birth of Christ that is celebrated throughout Advent is based on biblical events and includes much Scripture. The actual development of the Advent season and church calendar developed much later.

As a result, a Christian should not feel required to celebrate or participate in Advent.

However, the season highlights many of the notable events surrounding the birth of Jesus. It has served a very positive purpose for many throughout the history of the church. Churches of a wide variety of backgrounds continue to celebrate Advent today as part of the larger celebration of Christmas.

Even families and small groups of Christians often find joy in practicing in the traditions of Advent together. Counting the days on the calendar, reading Scripture, praying, and singing together all allow believers to further enjoy the true reason of Advent and Christmas—the coming of Jesus to our world.

What is the meaning and purpose of a Christmas Nativity?

A Christmas nativity is probably one of the most recognizable symbols of the Christmas season.

The word nativity is taken from the Latin nativus, which means "arisen by birth." Nativities are art, models, carvings, or live demonstrations depicting the night of Jesus' birth. These scenes generally contain the same elements: the Christ child in a manger; His mother, Mary; His earthly father, Joseph; shepherds; angels; various barn animals; and sometimes three wise men.

Saint Francis of Assisi created the very first nativity scene in 1223 in an effort to promote the true meaning of Christmas and worship of Jesus Christ. His idea caught on, and soon a new Christmas tradition was born. Today, it's almost impossible for one to go through the Christmas season without seeing a nativity scene in front of a church, in a Christmas play, decorating someone's yard, or placed in model form on a fireplace mantel.

In spite of the nativity's popularity, there are a few theological errors in many of them.

First, most nativity scenes are set in a stable or cave. While this may have been where Jesus was born, it's just as likely that Jesus was born in the lower level of a home, amongst animals who were brought inside for the night (the Greek word for "inn" (kataluma), found in Luke 2:7, can also mean "house"). In addition, the angels that are often shown hovering over the stable in a nativity were likely not there, at least not visibly. The angels' part in the Christmas story took place in a field, where they announced Jesus' birth to a group of shepherds (Luke 2:8–14). Finally, although the wise men often appear in a nativity, they did not visit Jesus the night of His birth. The magi visited Jesus some time later, when He was a toddler (Matthew 2:1–11).

In spite of the discrepancies, the most important thing about a nativity is its message to the world: Because our sin requires a perfect sacrifice before a holy and just God, our Heavenly Father sent His own Son to earth as a man so that He could become that sacrifice (John 3:16). The child who was born to Mary and laid in a manger would one day grow up to die on a cross and rise again so each and every person who believes in Him may receive forgiveness for sin and eternity in heaven (1 Peter 1:3-4).

What is the significance of Jesus being born in a manger?

Believe it or not, Jesus wasn't actually born in a manger (a food trough for animals). But after Jesus was delivered, his mother did lay Him in a manger after wrapping Him in swaddling cloths.

So why was Jesus laid in an animal feed trough in the first place?

Thousands of years ago, God the Father promised His Son's birth soon after Adam and Eve's sin in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:15). Because sin now created a rift in mankind's relationship with God, we needed a Savior who would sacrifice Himself as payment for the sins of those who believe in Him. To that end, God put a plan in motion that would result in the birth, ministry, death, and resurrection of the only Being capable of becoming the perfect sacrifice God's justice and holiness required.

When Jesus's mother, Mary, was pregnant, she was forced to travel to the town of Bethlehem with her husband, Joseph, so their family could be counted in a census of the entire Roman territory (Luke 2:1–5). This fulfilled the prophecy saying the Messiah would be born in that city: "But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days" (Micah 5:2).

Some time after they arrived, Mary gave birth to Jesus. The Bible tells us that the reason Mary laid Jesus in the manger was because "there was no place for them in the inn" (Luke 2:7). There is more than one meaning for the Greek word for "inn" (kataluma)—it can refer to a hotel-like residence, but it can also be translated as "lodging-place." This has caused some controversy as to whether or not Jesus was actually born in a house with an area serving as a nighttime shelter, or a stable as many suppose (taken from the fact that Jesus was laid in a manger). Many houses in that day had a wooden or stone feeding trough for the animals that were brought in against the cold night. If Jesus was born in a house, it is likely that Mary and Joseph were relegated to the lower floor due to the overcrowding in the upper-level guest rooms.

Regardless of the exact location of Jesus' birth, Jesus' first bed was an indicator of His nature and purpose. Rather than coming to earth amidst fanfare and in plush surroundings, the King of Creation and God's own Son was born among animals, with his very first visitors being lowly shepherds from the fields. This humble king would grow up to one day sacrifice His life on a cross for sinners, rise again, and then return to His Father's side in power and glory.

What is the importance of the virgin birth of Jesus Christ?

The virgin birth of Jesus Christ is a common emphasis during the Christmas season, but is it important? Why was it crucial that Mary be a virgin when Jesus was conceived and born?

Why is it vital that Jesus did not have a biological father?

Could Jesus have been God incarnate without the intervention of the Holy Spirit?

One reason for Jesus' virgin birth is that it identified Him as the Messiah. Isaiah 7:14 prophesied that a virgin would be with child. Ever since that prophecy, the Jews had looked for that particular sign. God uses miracles to validate His messengers. A virgin birth is a powerful validation.

Another reason for the virgin birth is that having a biological father would have annulled Jesus' deity. He could not have been the son of Joseph and the Son of God at the same time.

Every person born of man has inherited Adam's sin nature (Romans 5:12, 17, 19). It was only as God that Jesus could be the perfect sacrifice for sin, so it was the Holy Spirit who conceived Jesus (Luke 1:35).

The virgin birth is also a picture of our role in salvation: acceptance. Joseph had no part whatsoever in the conception of Jesus. Mary's role was passive; she merely accepted God's gift. As Ephesians 2:8-9 says, the work of salvation is done by God alone. Neither holiness nor salvation can be brought about by the effort of man.

There are some who do not believe in the virgin birth. Arianism teaches that the "virgin" of Isaiah 7:14 should read "young woman," and that at some point, God created Jesus. The Ebionites, an early Jewish Christian sect that closely followed Jewish law, taught that Jesus was Joseph's biological son and, because of Jesus' righteousness, God chose Him to be a prophet and anointed Him with the Holy Spirit. The Gnostics, who believed the physical and the divine could not co-exist, claimed that God could not inhabit a material body; therefore, Jesus only appeared to be human.

Those who reject the virgin birth also reject the deity of Jesus, the sin nature of man, and the inspiration of the Word of God. Therefore, a denial of the virgin birth is antithetical to the Christian faith. God is all-powerful. Jesus is God. The Bible is God's Word. These are key points in the Christian faith, and they make a virgin birth a very simple matter.

T he Celebration

Are Christians supposed to celebrate Christmas? Is it okay for Christians to celebrate Christmas?

There has been a long-standing debate regarding whether Christians should celebrate Christmas. What does Scripture teach? First, the Bible recognizes the birth of Jesus as a special event. It was a virgin birth (Matthew 1:18). It was announced by angels (Luke 2:10-14), attended by shepherds (Luke 2:15-20), and acknowledged by wise men (Matthew 2:1-12). The fact that both Matthew and Luke share reports of this event note its importance to the early Christians.

Second, there is no clear command in the Bible to celebrate the day of Christ's birth.

While it is expected that Christians would rejoice at the coming of Jesus to earth, it is also not a prescribed holiday. The church's celebration of Christmas on December 25 came later as a way to honor the day Jesus was born in Bethlehem.

Third, there are some unwarranted reasons some argue against celebrating Christmas.

For example, some argue against the holiday because the date of Christ's birth is unknown. While this is true, not knowing the exact date of Jesus's birth does not mean it is wrong to choose a date to celebrate it. The exact date is less important that the reason for the celebration.

Further, some argue against celebrating Christmas due to pagan or non-Christian influences. Some refer to the early pagan connections, while others argue against the modern connections with presents, Santa Claus, and other cultural traditions. Again, while aspects associated with Christmas may be at odds with Christian values, the celebration of Christ's birth is a positive and can be celebrated by all believers in Jesus.

The cultural celebration of Christmas also offers many opportunities to share the true reason for the holiday. Many have grown up with Christmas traditions without understanding the Savior who was born. A proper focus on Christmas can serve as a wonderful outreach to those in one's family or community.

Romans 14:5-6 offers a helpful principle related to the celebration of Christmas: "One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike.

Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord." There is no command to celebrate Christmas, yet Christmas can be celebrated in honor of the Lord. The goal of the believer is to honor God each day, including December 25, regardless of one's personal thoughts related to practices related to the Christmas holiday.

Does giving gifts take away from the true meaning of Christmas?

The real meaning of Christmas is celebrating of the birth of Jesus—God's ultimate gift of love to the world to save us from our sin (Luke 2; John 3:16). When talking about the tradition of giving gifts at Christmas, many people point to the Magi (wise men) bringing gifts to baby Jesus (Matthew 2:10-11).

Today, in our materialistic-saturated culture, Christmas is often made more about "what I get" rather than about "what God gave us." Millions of marketing and advertising dollars ensure that is the case, because let's face it: Christmas is a very lucrative time of year for retail businesses.

But just because obscene materialism has become a big part of the Christmas season today does not mean that the tradition of giving gifts has to take away from the real meaning of Christmas. The key is our focus. It's easy to become consumed with the gift giving aspect because it's such an ingrained part of our culture, but our focus should be on God, who is the ultimate gift-giver (James 1:17). When we stop and realize that the birth of Jesus was not just a one-time gift from God over two thousand years ago, but that it has tangible meaning and impact on our lives every single day in the "now," giving gifts to one another can be a natural expression of our gratitude.

Ultimately, the question of whether giving gifts takes away from the true meaning of Christmas must be answered on an individual basis. If a person feels like it does, it may be worth reevaluating one's motivations behind giving gifts. The Bible speaks of excelling "in this grace of giving" as Christians (2 Corinthians 8:7-8 NIV). Our God is a very giving God, so it would make sense that as His followers we reflect the same characteristic, not just at Christmas, but year round.

Is 'Xmas' an acceptable abbreviation for 'Christmas'?

There are many who are very sensitive to attempts to disassociate Jesus Christ from the celebration of Christmas— sometimes referred to as the "War on Christmas." Spelling Christmas as Xmas, some would say, is just one more attempt at this. While this could certainly be some people's intention, the use of the word Xmas did not begin as an attempt to take Christ out of Christmas.

Xmas is simply an abbreviation of Christmas. The Greek word for "Christ" is Χριστός (pronounced kris-tos) and begins with the Greek letter, "chi," which is where we get our English letter "X" from. Abbreviating Christmas is nothing new, either. As far back as the 15th century with the invention of the printing press, the church began to use abbreviations like Xmas, Xianity, and even just X for Christ to save on printing costs.

Since then it has become an accepted practice to abbreviate Christmas as Xmas.

That being said, there is no denying there are legitimate attempts in our society to take Christ out of Christmas, so to speak. In pursuit of tolerance, inclusiveness, and political correctness, some are attempting to obscure the Christian origins of Christmas. Though that is not everyone's intention that uses the abbreviation Xmas, we know that there will always be those around us attempting to secularize the holiday in whatever ways they can.

As Christians, instead of getting angry or offended over the use of Xmas, our response should be one that shows the love of God. The Bible warns us that not everyone will agree with us so we shouldn't be surprised when we come across people who think differently than us on this issue (see Luke 6:22 and 1 John 3:13). We can look at it as our opportunity to keep the real meaning of Christmas alive in our families and those around us by understanding where "Xmas" originated and what it really stands for.

That's just one simple way to help keep Christ in Christmas

Is it okay to have a Christmas tree? Are Christmas trees pagan?

Some have argued Christians should not have a Christmas tree because the practice is associated with pagan worship. Should Christians have Christmas trees?

First, it is clear that Christians today who use a Christmas tree do not use it in any form of pagan worship. Instead it is part of Christmas tradition, one piece in the larger celebration of the birth of Jesus. Simply having a Christmas tree is not wrong since no pagan worship is taking place.

There is evidence of trees, or at least evergreen boughs, being associated with pagan worship. However, the tradition of Christmas trees began with Protestant Christians in Germany in the 16th century. The star on the tree was used to remember the star followed by the wise men (Matthew 2:1-12). In some cases, trees were topped by an angel to remember the angels who appeared to the shepherds on the night of Jesus' birth (Luke 2:8-14).

Some have wrongly used certain biblical passages to teach the use of Christmas trees is sinful. For example, Jeremiah 10:1-16 forbids cutting down and decorating trees, like people often do at Christmas. Isaiah 44 notes the futility of cutting down a tree and forming part of it into an idol for worship. Both of these examples have nothing to do with Christmas trees. Both occurred before the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem and were directed at the nation of Israel in regard to worship of idols. They are prohibitions against idolatry, not against having Christmas trees.

There is no biblical command regarding the use of Christmas trees, or Christmas at all.

As mentioned, the modern practice of Christmas trees associated with the celebration of Christ's birth began only 500 years ago. It is perfectly acceptable for a Christian to either celebrate or not celebrate Christmas and to include or not include a Christmas tree. Of course, this practice is also cultural, since evergreen trees are not available for use in celebration in some cultures.

First Corinthians 10:31 offers some encouraging words that can be applied regarding the use of a Christmas tree: "So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." 10

How should parents handle the issue of Santa Claus with their children?

Many parents are concerned regarding what to tell their children about Santa Claus. What are some guidelines to help with this issue?

First, it is helpful to know there was a historical figure upon whom the modern Santa stories are based. Saint Nicholas of Myra was a priest who lived in the fourth century.

His parents left him an inheritance when they died. He was known for giving anonymous gifts and sometimes leaving bags of money in people's homes or even down a chimney to avoid being discovered.

Nicholas of Myra died by the 350s. The day of his death became an annual feast during which children would leave out food for Nicholas and straw for his donkey. It was said the saint would come from heaven and leave toys and treats for good boys and girls.

Over the years, many variations of this tradition have developed into Santa Claus accounts told today.

But what should parents say to young children about Santa? Some choose to "play along" and pretend Santa comes from the North Pole on Christmas Eve night to give gifts. Other parents feel convicted to tell the real story of Saint Nicholas while also including the giving of gifts. Still others prefer to downplay the role of Santa and focus on the birth of Jesus Christ, the true reason to celebrate Christmas.

Each parent will need to discern the best way to approach the issue. However, a parent should never "pretend" to the extent that he or she is lying to their children. First Peter 3:10 teaches, "Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit." Of concern to parents is what may happen when the child feels lied to by a parent. Trust can then be broken, causing trouble in other areas of life.

One helpful approach may be to begin with teaching a child about the true reason for Christmas with the account of the birth of Jesus. As your child asks about Santa, you can share the historical story of Santa as a kind man who gave gifts to others. Still today, those who celebrate Christmas celebrate through the giving of gifts.

Each child will then have various levels of questions regarding details of Santa and related ideas. As a parent, there is nothing wrong with pretending along with your children or even making a "list for Santa," though the focus is to be on the celebration of Christ's birth and becoming a child who desires to give gifts to others. This focus can help a child better understand the birth of Jesus and the need to live with an attitude to serve and give to others.

Was Jesus actually born on December 25?

The birth of Jesus is celebrated on December 25, but is this the real date on which He was born? The Bible does not specifically tell us when Jesus was born, meaning any dates proposed for His birth require extra-biblical information.

The earliest known accounts associated with a December 25 birthdate can be traced back to church father Irenaeus (130—202) who connected Mary's conception of Jesus with the Passion Week (starting with Palm Sunday). Using March 25 as his Passion Week date, Irenaeus calculated forward nine months to December 25 as a birthdate.

Hippolytus (170—236) specifically noted December 25 with the birth of Jesus, though he may have made this decision based on the earlier tradition of Irenaeus.

Sextus Julius Africanus (160—240) noted December 25 as the date of Jesus' birth in the year 221.

The influential church leader John Chrysostom (347—407) held to December 25 as well.

Cyril of Jerusalem (348—486) was a writer who had access to the official Roman birth census and documented the birth of Jesus on December 25. This date would be accepted as the date on the Western church calendar. The Eastern churches selected January 6, with other churches selecting various dates between December 25 and January 6.

Biblically, the date of Jesus' birth is uncertain. In fact, we are uncertain even of the year in which Jesus was born. Matthew 2:1 tells us Herod was king when wise men from the east came looking for Jesus. This Herod died in 4 BC, meaning Jesus was born by then.

Further, since Herod commanded all males two years old and under to be killed after the wise men did not return, this indicates Jesus could have been as old as two years by 4 BC, giving a window of 6—4 BC for His birth.

The time of year is uncertain as well, though some data can help. Since a census was being taken in Luke 2, it was likely after the growing season, indicating a time from fall to spring. Another relevant note is that Jesus was born approximately six months after John the Baptist. John's father received the angelic visit regarding John's birth during his time of service in the temple. According to Jewish records, this time would have probably been in early June, with Elizabeth conceiving shortly afterwards. This would have placed the birth of John nine months later in approximately March/April, and Jesus six months later in September/October. However, we cannot know with certainty.

Though it is unknown which day Jesus was born, early believers selected December 25 based on the known information from that time. Regardless of whether this is the exact date, December 25 is now used to commemorate a key date in the history of all Christians—the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem.

Should Christians celebrate Epiphany/Three Kings' Day? What is it?

Epiphany is the church calendar day that celebrates the visit of the wise men to Jesus (Matthew 2:1-12). It is commemorated on January 6, twelve days after Christmas Day. It also marks the end of the twelve days of Christmas.

The word "epiphany" simply means a revelation or manifestation. The Epiphany celebrates the revealing of Jesus Christ to Gentiles (non-Jewish people) as represented by the wise men. Luke 2:32 spoke of this as well, calling the baby Jesus, "A light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel."

The earliest known reference to Epiphany in church history is found in the writings of Ammianus Marcellinus in 361. In 385, Egeria (also Silva) wrote of Epiphany as being practiced among churches in Jerusalem and Bethlehem. History notes that Western churches also celebrated the baptism of Jesus and the miracle at the wedding in Cana on the same date in the early church, though this is no longer the case today.

Should Christians celebrate Epiphany? It is certainly appropriate to commemorate the wise men coming to worship Jesus. However, there have been many non-biblical traditions added to Epiphany in various cultures that a believer would be wise to avoid.

Among concerning practices found associated with Epiphany include the sprinkling of "holy water" and the burning of "blessed" herbs. These superstitious practices have nothing to do with the coming of the wise men to Jesus and stand in conflict with the practices of the New Testament Christians.

Another concerning practice sometimes seen includes prayers to the magi. This idea stands clearly at odds with Scripture. Jesus taught His followers to pray to, "Our Father in heaven" (Matthew 6:9). He would later add that they were to pray in His name (John 14:13-14). At no point in Scripture are believers taught to pray to another person other than God. Regarding the celebration of Epiphany marking the coming of the wise men to Christ, however, one may choose to celebrate or not to celebrate. As the apostle Paul notes, "So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31; see also Romans 14:5-6).

The star of Bethlehem – What was it?

The star of Bethlehem is noted in the account of the visit of wise men (or magi) from the east to Jesus and His family (Matthew 2:112). The star appeared to mark the birth of Jesus, leading these wise men to seek the king who had been born in the land of the Jews. The men first went to the capital city of Jerusalem and asked King Herod for the location of the one who had been born king of the Jews. Herod in turn asked the Jewish religious leaders, who referred to the prophecy of the Messiah's birth in Bethlehem. The wise men then followed the star to the place Jesus, Mary, and Joseph were staying, worshiped Jesus and gave gifts. The wise men left by another way as warned in a dream. Jesus and His parents fled to Egypt after Joseph was warned in a dream, with Herod soon having all boys two years old and under put to death in Bethlehem.

But what was this star? First, it is clear the star was something special in the night sky that these wise men could observe during the time Jesus was born. The Greek word for star (aster) could refer to any celestial body, whether an actual star, comet, or other light.

Further, some biblical prophecies referred to the Messiah or King of the Jews in connection with this time and with a star. Number 24:17 predicts, "I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near: a star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel." Daniel 9:24-27 offered a general timeline that may have given the wise men insight regarding the time period in which Jesus would have been born.

Yet even these prophecies do not explain the origin of this "star." Various astronomers have suggested an alignment of various planets that caused a bright light, a comet, supernova, or other astrological event could best explain the light seen by the wise men.

Others simply accept that the "star" was a miraculous light that appeared just for the occasion of the wise men to find Jesus.

Perhaps the most likely candidate is the recording of a nova (birth of a new star) from astronomers in the northern constellation of Aquila in 4 BC. The reason a nova is a strong candidate it based on its appearance to those on earth. When it first takes place, it looks like a new star, then fades over the following months.

While the event was certainly miraculous, it is highly likely a particular astrological event took place at the same time. These wise men were likely ancient astronomers (often associated with wise men from the east). God gave these men some kind of insight based on light they saw in the sky. Based on this information and leading of God, they became the first non-Jews to worship Jesus. As many still say today, wise men still seek Him. The candles on the Advent wreath symbolize hope, love, joy and peace. ... Some denominations consider the fourth candle to mean purity, and most use a fifth candle, called the Christ candle, that is lit on Christmas to remind Christians of the light Jesus brings to the world.

Read This On Christmas Morning I don't know what your family traditions are, hopefully that the reading of the Word of God is included on the agenda for Christmas Day. If it's not, make 2021 the year to start a new tradition!

The Scripture passage that you're about to read doesn't immediately come to mind as a Christmas passage, but it's one that should be included in every gathering. ROMANS 8:31-39 "What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?

Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."

ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE Why should you read this passage to your family on Christmas? Because Romans 8 reminds us what the Christmas story is all about, by defining the glorious result of the birth of Jesus.

What was the glorious result of Jesus' birth? In a word - love. Think about it: Jesus deserved to be loved, but he was rejected so that we, who deserve to be rejected, would be eternally loved by the Father.

Jesus subjected himself to the fickle and failing love of his followers so that we will know the faithful and unfailing love of the father.

Jesus experienced separation from the Father so that nothing could ever separate us from the Father's love.

This Christmas, remind yourself and your family that hope is only found in how much you've been loved by Jesus. It will be tempting to look for hope in the gifts that you receive or in the gifts that you give or in the people that you celebrate Christmas with, but those gifts will get old, your generosity will wrestle with your selfishness, and the people who say they love you will find a way to disappoint you once again.

The only hope that you have this Christmas is in the love that God has for you. Husbands, you won't love your wife like you're supposed to. Wives, you won't love your husbands like you're supposed to. Brothers and sisters, you won't love your siblings like you're supposed to. Parents, you won't love your kids like you're supposed to. Kids, you won't love your parents like you're supposed to. But God will always love you perfectly.

Christmas Day is a celebration of how much God loves us. Don't miss out on an opportunity to share that Good News. Remind yourself and your family to fix your eyes on Jesus and celebrate that there's eternal, life-changing hope for you!

Christmas 2021 is just a few weeks away and many of us are looking forward to spending quality time with family and friends. Connecting with family and friends is important for our mental health and well-being.

We are in a much better place this year compared to last year. However, we still need to be cautious. COVID-19 and its variants still present a lot more challenges and anxiety than in years prior to the pandemic.

Everyone, including children 5++ years, who can get vaccinated should be vaccinated, and those who qualify for a booster should get one. Gathering is unsafe for the unvaccinated because the first exposure to this virus can be lethal without protection from a vaccine.

Breakthrough infections are possible. If there are unvaccinated family and friends, your situation is no different than in 2020: People who are unvaccinated are more likely to be infected and therefore, more likely to bring the virus to the table, possibly causing illness (even if mild) among those who are vaccinated. In addition, you should continue to be cautious about gathering in large groups, in indoor public settings, as well as with unvaccinated family and friends Despite all the challenges, anxiety and hubbub the Holiday season brings, let us not forget “the reason for the season”. We may have doubts about celebrating with family and friends, putting ornaments on the Christmas Tree or hanging a wreath on the door, but we should never doubt that about two thousand years ago, between 6 and 4 BC, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Messiah whose coming the prophets had announced for thousands of years, actually was born in Bethlehem – not in majesty and power, as expected, but in poverty in a stable with a manger for his crib. There were no family gatherings or flashing Christmas Tree lights, with gift boxes and lots of toys underneath.

Regardless of the challenges we now face, we Christians show our “Joy To The World” as we celebrate the birth and life of our Savior, Jesus Christ. As we celebrate, let us resolve that during the coming year we will try with all our might to make Jesus, the Messiah, the absolute center of our lives.

The angel gives (the shepherds) instructions. The angel tells them, He can be found in a manger in Bethlehem. We should all go look for the baby Jesus.

That journey should first take us inward. We should look for the salvation God has in all of us. …

We should be seeking our purpose, our true direction — just as the angel told the shepherds to go find Baby Jesus.”

By finding that individual purpose we manifest God’s glory, who leads the church that was established in 1847, almost two decades before slavery ended and that remains a pillar of our Black community today. “The best we can do in our life is to realize what our true purpose and true meaning is.

Whether talking about the shepherds, the wise men — any of the characters in the Christmas story — after coming in contact with what God wants us to be, we should be different and be energized.

God’s will for us can range from helping people stay afloat during the pandemic to “helping people to vote. By using the lesson of the angel’s announcement of Jesus’s birth to empower the self, individuals can go out and empower their communities.

What Can I Give?

I went to church on Christmas morn to hear the angels sing.

My heart was lifted with every chorus; the rafters, they did ring.

I sang along with joy in my heart, the greatest sound I've ever heard. From "O Holy Night" to "What Child is This?" I cherished every word.

I celebrated the King's lowly birth; I shouted and danced about.

Then came along a "Little Drummer Boy," and I knew I was without. What had I given the babe this year? A panic crossed my mind.

I tried to think of what I had given, but there was none to find.

Did I find a child and clothe him well? Did I seek a widow to bless? Did I go to someone sick in their bed and try to ease their death?

Did I ask a sinner to say a prayer or tell him the Good News?

Did I give a beggar something to eat or at least buy him some shoes?

I bowed my head as the drummer boy played; my tears started to fall.

I didn't even give Him my best, let alone give Him my all.

So this Christmas, Jesus, I bring you my drum, the very beat of my heart. I ask Your forgiveness, for things undone; it's the only place I can start.

Local Church Organization – Commissions (Options exercised, as appropriate to SPAME Local Church.).

A. Guidelines for Establishing Commissions 1. Types There may be constituted in each local church the following commissions, whose respective duties are hereinafter defined: a) The Commission on Membership, Evangelism and Discipleship, b) The Commission on Christian Education, c) The Commission on Missions and Welfare, d) The Commission on Stewardship and Finance, e) The Commission on Public Relations, f) The Commission on Christian Social Action and g) The Commission on Health.

2. Chairpersons a) The pastor shall be the chairperson of the Commission on Stewardship and Finance and is ex officio chairperson of the other commissions. b) The chairperson of each commission shall be a steward and, therefore, a member of the Official Board and Quarterly Conference to which he or she is amenable. c) Exception: The chairperson of the Commission on Missions and Welfare may be either a steward or a trustee. d) Chairpersons shall make monthly reports to the Official Board and also quarterly reports to the Quarterly Conference.

3. Election of Members a) The members shall be elected by the Church Conference, except that the Commission on Christian Education shall be composed of the pastor, the superintendent of the Church School, president of the Allen Christian Fellowship, director of the Young People’s and Children’s Division of the Women’s Missionary Society, directors of Bureau Service Agencies and additional members who shall be nominated by the pastor and elected by the Quarterly Conference. b) The director of Christian Education shall be ex officio a member of this commission.

4. Composition a) Each commission shall be composed of no fewer than three (3) nor more than seven (7) members who are in good and regular standing in the AME Church and eighteen (18) years of age or older. b) This rule may not apply in the case of mission charges, and does not apply to the Commission on Stewardship and Finance, which shall be composed of an equal number of stewards and trustees, plus Official Board members-at-large. The total number of persons on this commission shall not be fewer than three (3) nor more than nine (9). c) Each commission shall cooperate with the Connectional and Annual Conference Commission.

B. Rules Governing Commissions 1. Quarterly and Annual Review: There shall be a quarterly and annual review of each commission.

2. Education: It shall be the responsibility of the presiding bishop, the presiding elder and the pastor to educate the people concerning the program.

3. Financial System: At the first Quarterly Conference following the Annual Conference, the presiding elder shall ascertain the type of financial system the church shall use. In the event the first Quarterly Conference occurs less than thirty (30) days following the Annual Conference, the church shall report its choice to the presiding elder.

4. Removal from Office In the interim of the Quarterly Conference: any commission chairperson or member who fails to perform his or her duties as prescribed by The Doctrine and Discipline of the African Methodist Episcopal Church may be removed by the pastor, with the approval of the Official Board. He or she may also be removed in case of improper temper, words, action or disloyalty to the rules and regulations 22

of the administration. The pastor shall fill the vacancy until the next meeting of the Quarterly Conference, which shall dispose of the case.

C. Duties of Each Commission 1. Commission on Christian Education a. Requirement There shall be in every local church a Commission on Christian Education. b. Duties 1) It shall make careful study of the Christian Education needs of the local church and the means for meeting these needs, such as the correlation of the program of educational agencies for the various age groups, the recommendation and approval of curricula in harmony with the findings of the curriculum committee and the standards adopted by the Division of Christian Education, and the supervision of the recruitment, training and assignment of Christian Education workers in the local church.

2) It shall see that the Church School, Allen Christian Fellowship, Young People’s and Children’s Division, missionary members and all their authorized classes, departments and groups are supplied with adequate and appropriate literature and proper equipment prepared and approved by the Division of Christian Education.

3) It shall see that suitable missionary programs are carried out at stated periods in all the departments of the Church School and Allen Christian Fellowship, cooperating with the Young People’s and Children’s Division.

4) It shall see that appropriate days are observed annually as Church School Day, Decision Day and Promotion Day. Plans for the observance of the days shall provide for the presentation to the church the work of the Church School, Allen Christian Fellowship and other service agencies.

5) It shall cooperate in the proper observance of Easter Day, Children’s Day, Allen Jubilee Week and Christian Education Week, as prescribed by The Doctrine and Discipline of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. These observances include Allen Jubilee Week in February and September, and Christian Education Week in September. The value and use of The Journal of Christian Education should be emphasized during all of these observances.

2. Commission on Membership, Evangelism and Discipleship: a. Every pastor shall be encouraged to establish in the local church a Commission on Membership, Evangelism and Discipleship. b. He or she shall, in conjunction with the local church conference, establish realistic goals for the growth of the church committed to his or her charge. These goals and objectives shall include increasing membership and training ministerial and lay leaders whose task it shall be to: 1) Study the demographics of the community in which the church seeks to minister, in order to identify opportunities for the church to engage in meaningful ministries.

2) Develop workshops for the leadership of the local church and its membership to enhance the opportunity for the entire church to participate in the church’s ministry, thereby creating a sense of corporate responsibility for the task.

3) Implement a Bible plan tailored to the community in which the ministry is to take place, including possible street ministries, trained home visitation teams, revival and evangelistic services, and distribution of tracts and AME literature that promote Jesus Christ.

4) Implement a formal discipleship curriculum of continuing education in every local church (for all members, youth, young adults, adults and seniors), under the direction of the local pastor and lay leaders through formal Bible Study, Church School, New Members Class, Evangelism Ministries and similar means. This curriculum shall teach: 23

a) obedience to the Word of God to “go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19),” b) spiritual persistence and c) methods to disciple others to experience a growing relationship with God. Best-practice research models and current Christian literature shall be utilized.

3. Commission on Stewardship and Finance a. Purpose: The Commission on Stewardship and Finance shall promote and cultivate Christian stewardship and administer the financial program of the church. b. Duties: In keeping with this overall function, the duties of this commission are as follows: 1) Each year the Commission shall set up a budget for the church and shall submit the same to the Official Board for its action and determination.

2) Upon approval of the annual budget by the Official Board, the Commission shall, under the direction of the Board, take action to provide the income sufficient to cover same, and shall administer the funds received according to the plan of the Official Board.

3) There shall be an annual “Every Member Canvas” for individual pledges. All payments shall be credited to the donors and a proper account shall be kept of each subscriber and contributor.

4) The funds shall be deposited promptly in a bank approved by the Board and the account shall be in the name of the local church.

5) Funds received shall be disbursed as the Official Board directs, subject to the approval of the pastor.

The income received each month shall have been shared proportionately among the budgeted items, after the pastor’s salary and that of the entire church staff shall be given priority.

6) A report shall be made by the financial secretary and treasurer(s) to the Official Board each month and to the Quarterly Conference of all receipts and disbursements, and of unpaid obligations against the budget.

7) It shall be the continuing duty of the Commission to inform the congregation of the financial needs of the church.

8) No lottery, raffle or other games of chance shall be used in raising money for any purpose. c. Central Budget Fund: The work of the local church requires the support of each member. Participation through services and gifts is a Christian duty and a means of grace. In order that all members of the AME Church on the local level may share in its manifold ministries at home and abroad, and that work committed to us may prosper, the following financial plan is hereby duly approved and adopted. [See Part II, Section VII: Stewardship: Tithes and Offerings (Rules for Giving)] 1) There may be established a central fund in the local church known as the “Central Budget Fund”.

2) The various causes and services included in this local fund shall be: a) Ministers’ Support, b) Benevolences, c) Christian Education, d) Public Relations, e)Connectional Budget, f) Conference Budget (District, Annual, g) Community Projects, h) Current Trustee Expenses, i) Purchase and Repair, j) Church Expansion (Local), k) Travel (Minister and Lay), l) Extra Budget Projects, m) Insurance, n) Contingency 3) All monies raised by organizations of or for the church shall be reported immediately to this Fund.

Each commission shall be permitted to draw on this fund, upon presentation of a voucher previously prepared for such purposes. Each organization shall withdraw funds for incidental needs, using the same procedure.

4) This Fund shall be administered by the Commission on Stewardship and Finance.

4. Commission on Missions and Welfare a. Duties The duties of the Commission on Missions and Welfare are as follows: 1) It shall provide for the dissemination of missionary information, the distribution of missionary literature and the circulation of general missionary periodicals.

2)

It must plan on an annual basis. 3) It must cooperate with other departments, units and commissions of the church in the survey and study of the needs of the community.

4) It shall oversee and control the local church program of welfare and charity. 5) It shall cooperate with the pastor, the missionary society and other organizations and units in the local church. b. Budget It shall confer annually with the Commission on Stewardship and Finance in setting up the local budget.

Commission on Christian Social Action This commission shall coordinate activities in the areas of social, racial and economic relations; temperance; world peace, and community cooperation, as directed by the Connectional Social Action Commission.

6. Commission on Health a. Duties The duties of this commission are as follows: 1) assess the health needs of the congregation 2) organize a health guild 3) develop health education training and projects for the congregation 4) serve as a resource for health information 5) collaborate with community health agencies and associations for health programs and projects 6) provide first aid as needed during church activities 7) implement activities as directed by the Connectional Health Commission 8) seek resources to improve the worth of our congregations. b. Members The members of the commission shall include health professionals or allied health workers, and students of health-care disciplines who are members of the congregation. c. Budget It shall submit an annual budget to the Commission on Stewardship and Finance.

7. Commission on Public Relations a. Duties The duties of this commission are as follows: 1) It shall be responsible for gathering and disseminating information of public interest to the secular press, religious press, network and cable radio and television stations, and other legitimate publicinformation outlets.

2) It shall be responsible for intra-congregational communication.

3) It shall disseminate information to the official organs of the AME Church. b. Budget It shall submit an annual budget to the Commission on Stewardship and Finance.

Who is a Layperson?

All persons who have joined the AME church and have not been ordained is a Layperson. All Layperson’s are encouraged to become an active member of their local church Lay Organization.

A NEW YEAR'S PLAN I tried to think of a clever new phrase— A slogan to inspire the next 365 days, A motto to live by this coming New Year, But the catchy words fell flat to my ear.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE Submitted by Senator Reginald L. Thomas November 23, 2021 FRANKFORT – We are less than 50 days from the beginning of the 2022 Regular Session, and it is quickly approaching. The 2022 Session will surely be an interesting one, because it is a budget year and coming on the heels of a global pandemic. These challenges will be crucial to the process and the policies we will confront when we convene in January.

Lawmakers gathered in Frankfort this week for several November interim joint committee (IJC) meetings, hearing from stakeholders and discussing a wide variety of issues.

The School Funding Task Force met several times over the interim period to reexamine how effectively the Commonwealth of Kentucky funds public education, and whether we are still honoring the ideas and intent of the Kentucky Educational Reform Act (KERA) passed in 1990. The Task Froce reviewed the entirety of the K-12 1

funding mechanism, reviewed agency reports and analyses of school funding, and discussed possible changes to appropriations of funds to Kentucky’s public schools. Testimony was offered by several leading experts, both within and outside the state, as to the best manner in which Kentucky should educate its children.

Nine recommendations were approved by the School Funding Task Force for consideration by the General Assembly during the 2022 session. Included among the recommendations are: 1. The General Assembly permanently authorize the full funding of kindergarten in statute and ensure districts receive the appropriate equalization funding as a result of the change; 2. The General Assembly give consideration to transitioning from using average daily attendance in the funding calculation to using average daily membership in a manner that minimizes extreme funding changes for school districts while also maintaining incentives for student attendance and accountability for school districts; 3. The General Assembly develop a plan to return to full state funding of district transportation; and 4. The General Assembly provide funding to expand use of the state’s Family Resource and Youth Service Centers that have proven to effectively provide wraparound services to students in Kentucky schools.

In the November meeting of the IJC on Transportation, members heard potential legislation that would only allow the hands-free use of a personal communication device while driving. Under this proposed legislation, personal communication devices would include a text messaging device, a stand-alone computer, a tablet, a laptop, a notebook computer, a personal digital assistant, a GPS, a telephone, or any device capable of displaying a video, movie, or visual image. The measure would also prohibit drivers from unbuckling their seatbelts to reach for a device.

Kentucky would not be the first state to implement this type of law. Twenty-four states have adopted this type of law, including Tennessee, Virginia, and Indiana. If the General Assembly were to adopt the measure next session, drivers would receive a warning, and there would be a grace period lasting until October 1, 2022.

Lawmakers cannot take action on any proposed legislation until the next legislative session begins on January 4.

Gauging legislation can be difficult, especially when there are so many wheels in motion. I expect many of the bills we take up next year will relate to policy discussions that legislators have honed in on throughout the interim.

In Kentucky, I appreciate having a public school system that makes it possible for every child to receive an educationan education that is the foundation of every child’s future. We are fortunate to have teachers who want to see all children succeed. It is wonderful that a child can dream the impossible and be encouraged to reach for the stars.

As the legislature continues to prepare for the upcoming session in Frankfort, many of us will head home for the holidays next week. As I return home to spend time with family, I count my blessings, especially with everything we have been through for nearly two years. During this Thanksgiving, I join many of you in being grateful for our health, our home, and our happiness. Certainly there are those who are homeless and hungry and we should not ignore them. Thankfully, in our country, many are concerned for their fellow man and reach out to them to try and make their lives better. I embrace this spirit of America that assist our elderly, disabled, less fortunate, and most vulnerable. Along with good food and fellowship, I hope you, too, can reflect on your many gifts this Thanksgiving Day. Happy Thanksgiving!
