Royal Bank making it easier for newcomers to settle in Canada

RBC Royal Bank today announced it has made a number of enhancements to make it easier for newcomers to manage their finances and settle in Canada. The changes being made recognize the unique needs of newcomers and better enable access to credit products, including options that require no Canadian credit history.

"Each year, we welcome approximately 650,000 immigrants

to Canada and one of the common challenges newcomers face is establishing credit in their new home country," said Christine Shisler, director, Multicultural Markets, RBC. "We want to be the bank that helps people with their important firsts - their first bank account, their first credit card, their first car purchase and their first home. These are significant milestones and we want to make the transition to Canada as seamless as possible by recognizing their needs and values."

The changes affect three major areas of the journey to Canada: Buying your first car and home,

establishing a Canadian credit history and getting reaccredited in your field. These changes will make it easier to get the credit products they need without waiting to build a Canadian credit history.

Buying your first car in Canada Upon settling in Canada, many people require a vehicle.

In a study conducted by RBC, about one in four (26 per cent) newcomers who have been in Canada for one year or less report they expect to buy a vehicle in the next year. However, more than one-third (39 per cent) of these say they don't know how they are going to finance it. RBC has made it easier to make a first car purchase in Canada by introducing a new "no credit history required" loan at over 3,500 dealerships nationwide.

Buying your first home in Canada Many newcomers buy a home within five years of arrival, and our research has shown that it can be a very challenging experience.

Our new mortgage enhancements make it easier for newcomers to get into their first house in Canada sooner. We've extended the qualification period for RBC's Newcomer Mortgage program from three to five years, enabling more newcomers to get a mortgage in the first five years of arrival in Canada, with or without a credit history.

Although RBC does not require newcomers to have a credit history in order to purchase your first vehicle or home, establishing a credit history is a critical step upon settlement in Canada. In the same study, RBC found that one-third (32 per cent) of those new to Canada felt that having a credit card was a useful way to establish a good credit rating in Canada. Allowing flexible borrowing behaviour helps newcomers achieve goals like buying a car or a house. RBC was one of the first banks to introduce the "no credit history required Unsecured Credit Card," and with this latest enhancement has made it easier for the vast majority of permanent residents to qualify for an unsecured credit card.

Getting reaccredited in your field Once they arrive in Canada, many workers may need to upgrade skills, and enroll in courses or school to receive Canadian accreditation in their chosen profession. To help newcomers with their career goals, RBC is expanding its unique Newcomer Skilled Loan Program to provide easier financing to support this important step.

"We want to help people achieve their goals in Canada, whether that's home ownership, buying a car or getting Canadian accreditation in their skill or trade," said Shisler. "The changes we are making demonstrate RBC's desire to understand and

he 4th World Sikaran Tournament hosted by, Grandmaster Dante Alambra of Sikaran Arnis School of Martial Arts of Canada was held on May 10th, 2014 at the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg. The competition was fierce and entertaining with more than 200 competitors that came from Philippines, Australia, USA and Canada. More than 400 lively spectators watched the return of former middleweight champion, Carlo Alambra spar.

Carlo earned the gold medal during the 1986 and 1994 World Tournaments and once again recieved the gold at the 4th

World Tournament.

The Gala Awards Dinner was a combination of both great food and heartfelt speeches.

The 200 guests in attendance included key members of the World Sikaran Brotherhood as well as, regional members of the community that assisted in making this event possible.

any music listeners fall in the chronocentric folly of believing that the best music to be had may be found only in the decade when they were teenagers. For example, a 45-year-old tends to claim that the best albums were released in the 1980s, or a 65-year-old might insist that the best bands were those that thrived in the 1960s.

To me, that’s a narrowminded and selfish view on music. Claiming that a certain decade is the best decade of music automatically dismisses or ignores the equally great contributions made in the rest of the decades.

Music Is Meant to Be Listened to…Not to Be Watched As a music enthusiast who enjoys listening to various genres of music, I don’t find difficulty in picking good and worthwhile albums from perhaps any genre from any given decade. It’s just a matter of having an open-eared attitude in listening to music.

Add to that, it’s also having the ability to appreciate music for musicality’s sake and not getting affected by whatever commercial radio or TV or media is spewing or spoonfeeding the masses.

Also, a music fan can maximize music appreciation by being able to separate the creator form the

creation. For instance, one can hate Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus for their respective lifestyles or antics, but this should not automatically mean that one should hate their music as well.

Music, for this to be enjoyed to the fullest, should be treated as a

legitimate and separate art form without too much regard for the lifestyles, convictions, sense of fashion, or other life adventures or misadventures of the artists who produce them. That’s why my suggestion to people to be able to appreciate music to the fullest is to listen to music and not to watch music. Meaning, the best way to appreciate music is to listen to it by playing a CD, a vinyl record, or even an MP3 file and not by watching a music video because the visual (which has nothing to do anyway with the actual sound) distracts the listener from absorbing all the musical details of the song or piece he is listening to.

Always Look for the Sound or Style You Like…Not Only for the Bands You’ve Accustomed With Because New Wave and similar-sounding genres have become my favorite sound, I’m always on the lookout for new bands and albums whose musical styles carry that trademark New Wave sound—angular and jangly rhythm guitars, repetitive and regularly pattern guitar adlibs, melodic basslines, presence of keyboards and synthesizers, brooding vocal styles, as well as incorporation of string and horn instruments. Having said that, here’s the list of my 13 recommended albums released in the 2000s, especially to those who like also New Wave or Alternative Rock in general.

Realize that there will always be good and interesting music available in any given place or time. All you need really is an open mind and a good pair of open ears. Besides, when it comes to studio-recorded music, whether the music is good or bad still remains subjective.

An Immigration Application Refusal is just a Phone Call Away

A

s with any immigration application, taking the necessary precautions to ensure that you are not misrepresenting yourself should be at the top of your priorities.

But what about situations in which you believe you are putting forth your best efforts to be truthful, and an immigration officer determines otherwise?

Take, for example, the federal court case of Bhamra v. Canada (Citizenship and Immigration Canada).

In this case, Mr. Bhamra, a young carpenter from India, received approval from the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) and made application for his permanent residency with Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

As with any immigration application, the Immigration Officer in charge of Mr. Bhamra’s file was responsible for verifying Mr. Bharma’s information to determine whether he was being

truthful. In doing so, the Officer needed to verify Mr. Bhamra’s periods of employment with his employer, the Panesar Timber Store in India.

Mr. Bhamra claimed to have spent several years working at this store as a cabinetmaker and carpenter.

In his application, Mr. Bhamra supplied both the SINP and Citizenship and Immigration Canada with a sworn statement from Mr. Jit Singh, the alleged owner of the Panesar Timber Store. The sworn statement was written on company letterhead and was allegedly signed by Mr. Singh, whose contact information was listed on the letter.

Upon telephoning the Panesar Timber Store to verify Mr. Bhamra’s employment history, the Officer was provided with some surprising information. The Officer spoke to a man who, with no reason to suspect otherwise, allegedly claimed to be Mr. Singh.

When asked about Mr. Bhamra,

Mr. Singh allegedly indicated that he had never employed anyone by that name, nor did his business produce any of the products that Mr. Bhamra claimed to manufacture at the store (such as kitchen cabinetry or bedroom furniture).

Not surprisingly, the Officer concluded from this conversation that Mr. Bhamra was misrepresenting himself on his immigration application, and refused it on this basis.

Before refusing the application, Mr. Bhamra was given 30 days to respond to the Officer’s allegations that he had supplied an allegedly fraudulent letter of employment. Within that 30-day period, Mr. Bhamra supplied yet another sworn letter, allegedly from the same Mr. Singh that had signed the first letter. The Officer refused the application on the basis of the telephone conversation with Mr. Singh.

One question that arises from this case is how an Officer can be certain that they are in fact speaking to the correct individual on the other end of the line? Mr. Bhamra insisted that the individual who answered the Officer’s phone call was not the real Mr. Singh.

However, the Judge upheld refusal for the following reasons: 1.The Officer called the phone number that was listed as the one belonging to Mr. Singh on the original sworn statement letter; 2.The individual who answered the phone indicated at the beginning of the call that he was Mr. Singh; not at the end of the call or only when asked;

3.The individual who answered the phone denied on several occasions during the call ever having known or employed Mr. Bhamra, or anyone by that name; 4.The individual who answered the phone indicated that they only manufactured certain wood products, none of which were those listed by Mr. Bhamra; 5.The individual who answered the phone was able to name the other employees who were mentioned in the sworn statement letter provided by Mr. Bhamra; and 6.The Officer did not indicate to the individual that he was calling regarding an immigration application until the end of the conversation.

Because his application was refused on the grounds of a misrepresentation, Mr. Bhamra was barred from applying to

9 immigrate to Canada for two years.

Kicking and Dreaming Canada – USA Soccer Friendly Inspires Future Players

ome of the world’s best women soccer players converged at Investors Group Field to showcase their talent in front of 28,255 fans.

The Canadian women’s national soccer team took on the number one ranked American club and continued their heated rivalry in an exciting affair that resulted in a 1-1 draw.

The fans were treated to an international soccer friendly which served as a teaser to the 2015 women’s World Cup that will be hosted by Canada. Given the cool but dry conditions, Winnipeggers still came out to support the Canadian squad to record the second highest

attendance for a women’s game in Canada. Winnipeg will play host to group stage matches in next year’s tournament. Canadian soccer hero Christine Sinclair and Winnipegger Desiree Scott both suited up for the match.

Canada opened the scoring in the 35th minute when 18-yearold defender Kadeisha Buchanan headed a corner kick past a diving American keeper, Hope Solo.

Buchanan’s goal was her first as a member of the national team.

Canadian goalkeeper Erin McLeod was brilliant in net stopping Heather O’Reilly and Abby Wambach to keep the Americans off the board. However, in the 78th minute another

Canadian born player scored.

Sydney Leroux, who was born in Surrey, BC but has played for the United States since 2008, scored off a misplay by Rebecca Quinn to equalize the game to the dismay of the crowd. Canadian coach John Herdman was disappointed with the end result.

“Disappointed, I’ve got to say,” Herdman said of the game.

“You’re one up on against the number one team in the world with 15 minutes to go I won’t be standing here clapping”.

Despite the draw, Herdman tipped his hat to the Winnipeg crowd stating earlier in the week that his team would need the hometown crowd to get behind them. Many young fans in attendance were treated to a world class soccer match with many walking away

with dreams of playing for Canada one day.

“The future was out there tonight,” Herdman said of his young players Buchanan and Quinn.

And just maybe the future of Canadian soccer was out there watching in the stands also.

Band frontman Chito Miranda puts on elegant wedding proposition to Actress Neri Naig

arokya Ni Edgar frontman Chito Miranda confirmed his engagement with actress Neri Naig. Miranda was emotional during the engagement to his 28-year-old girlfriend. On May 14, 2014, Chito Miranda shared a YouTube video featuring his romantic proposal with his girlfriend.

Naig thought it was just another acting job. According to the singer and composer, he connives with his friend who is a director to shoot for a music video. Chito Miranda noted that

the music video is just a front of his proposal because he wanted to document everything.

Neri was asked to star in a music video and had spent the day posing for the camera while Chito Miranda on his part went to a flower shop and bought a bouquet of flowers. The proposal of Chito Miranda happened at night when the words “Ako na

siguro and pinaka swerteng lalake sa buong Cavite” were flashed on a projector screen.

A puzzled Naig turned around, taking the hint that something else was happening.

Her boyfriend Miranda then came out from the shadows and handed her a colorful bouquet of flowers. The couple hugged and kissed as they watched on the screen photos of them together.

Immortal Sacrament: The Ultimate Filipino-Canadian Metal Band in Manitoba

ormed in 2010, Immortal Sacrament is perhaps the only legitimate Metal band of Manitoba whose members are all Filipinos. The band is currently comprised by Paul Magnaye (vocals), Sherwin Ylagan (bass), Marron Verzosa (guitar), Ronnel Villamar (guitar), and Jolo Mejia (drums). They cite System of a Down, Killswitch Engage, and Bullet for My Valentine as their major musical influences. During the first batch of Immortal Sacrament, with former drummer Joseph David and bass player Michael Borja, they have released an album of 10 songs the main theme of which was hope. In the second album that the band is currently working on, they talk about struggles and life’s experiences. Possible songs include “Life,” “Resurrection,” “Grave,” “Silhouette,” “Greed,” “Flames,” and “Undivided.”

Honda Accord Hybrid Awarded Top Green Car for 2014

T

he long drive between Winnipeg and Calgary is just over 1,300kms. Last month, I drove a Toyota Tundra and spent approximately $300 in fuel. Driving the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid back to Winnipeg, the fuel cost for regular unleaded was approximately $125. Even with premium unleaded gas, I would have spent an equivalent of approximately $150. Average fuel consumption over the 1,300kms

long drive was approximately 6.7l per 100kms. After driving previous hybrid vehicles along that stretch, the Honda Accord Hybrid was a rockstar when it comes to fuel efficiency.

Driving the Accord through the Canadian Rockies and on the TransCanada through the prairies was enjoyable. Even with a hybrid engine, driving didn’t seem underpowered. The ride was quiet and comfortable.

While driving in Banff, Calgary and Winnipeg, I tried using every single trick in the book to use the electric engine in the city. That meant very slow acceleration on green lights, keeping my speed under 40km/hr to keep the ECO drive engaged.

The Honda Accord Hybrid performed extremely well and given the start-stop traffic during construction season in Winnipeg, this car would perform well in saving on annual fuel costs.

The Honda Accord Hybrid was named as the top Canadian Green Car for 2014 earlier this

year in Toronto at the Canadian Green Car Awards. The Accord Hybrid took top honours after beating other category winners.

Powering the Honda Accord Hybrid is the 2.0 litre 16-valve, Atkinoson DOHC i-VTEC 4-cyclinder engine coupled to an electric motor that pumps a combined hybrid system power of 196hp.

The Honda Accord is a great vehicle already. Providing a hybrid option makes the Honda Accord line of vehicles even better. The one noticeable difference, which really isn’t

noticeable, is the size of the trunk.

Honda has to put the batteries somewhere and as a result, had to sacrifice trunk space. While the size of the trunk is smaller, I was able to use the 348 litre trunk space adequately for luggage, camera gear and pasalubong.

The 2014 Honda Accord Touring Sedan has a base price of $35,690. Price as tested including freight, AC tax is $37,485.

Other hybrid vehicles in this class include the Ford Fusion Hybrid, Toyota Camry Hybrid, Kia Optima Hybrid, and Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.

The 7th Fleet has never left

T

here is a minority but very vocal group of Filipinos – including militant lawmakers and Catholic Church leaders -- who are critical of the recently inked Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) between the Philippines and the United States. Some say it was a mockery of the Philippine constitution. Some say President Benigno Aquino III sold out the country to America. And some say that China would drop thermonuclear bombs on the Philippines if war broke out with the U.S. Well, that’s what the anti-American minority thinks.

But what does the majority of Filipinos think? According to the 2013 Global Attitudes Project conducted by Pew Research Center in Washington, D.C., the Philippines got an 85% score – the highest among 39 participating countries -- when people were asked: “Do you have a favorable or unfavorable view of the US?” But what were coming out in the Philippine press were mostly negative information -- or misinformation -- picturing the U.S. as a neo-colonial and imperialistic power.

Nothing is farther from the truth. As a matter of fact, America didn’t need to reestablish permanent bases on Philippine territory. The U.S. has close to 100,000 military personnel in Japan, South Korea, and Australia, and assets that include a nuclear aircraft carrier, nuclear submarines, fighter jets, and strategic bombers.

However, the U.S. is still committed to defend the Philippines if attacked by a foreign power.

The Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT), which was signed in 1951, is still in full force notwithstanding the Philippine Senate’s abrogation of the U.S. bases agreement in 1991.

But no sooner had the Americans left than the Chinese started grabbing Philippine territory.

Deception In 1994, China built a platform on the tiny Panganiban Reef (Mischief Reef) purportedly to provide a rest stop for fishermen in the area. Since the reef was only 130 nautical miles from Palawan, the Philippines welcomed it, as it would be beneficial to Filipino fishermen. Wrong! As soon as the Chinese had established their presence in the area, they started building fortifications on the reef.

A more recent incident happened in 2012 at the Scarborough Shoal (Panatag Shoal), 124 nautical miles from Luzon. After driving out Filipino fishermen from the lagoon in the shoal, a standoff ensued between Chinese and Philippine Coast Guard vessels. The U.S. brokered a deal where both countries would withdraw their vessels from the shoal. The Philippines complied with the agreement but China did not. Instead China roped off the only entrance to the lagoon; thus, preventing Filipino fishermen from getting in.

It was then that President Aquino decided to ask the Americans for help. Negotiations were started eight months ago to look for ways to bring back the Americans without violating the 1987 Constitution, which prohibits foreign military bases on Philippine soil.

EDCA On April 28, 2014, the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) was signed.

The agreement came at a time when China had been building a blue-water navy capable of operating across the open seas, such as the waters surrounding the Philippines.

With a navy with no warships and an air force with no warplanes, the Philippines is helplessly at the mercy of China. China could easily take over Philippine territories in the disputed waters of the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) without firing a shot.

Ayungin is only 105 nautical miles from the Palawan coast, which China could use as a forward operating base in the area. It is the gateway to the prized Recto Bank, which is only about 80 nautical miles from Palawan. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration the Recto Bank could hold up to 5.4 billion barrels of oil and 55.1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

The only thing that’s preventing China from forcibly taking possession of Ayungin – and Recto Bank thereafter -- is a small detachment of Philippine marines deployed to a rusty naval ship, the BRP Sierra Madre, which lays aground off Ayungin.

Vigilance Last May 10, it was reported in the news that two helicopters from the USS Blue Ridge, the flagship of the U.S. 7th Fleet, spotted two Chinese guided missile destroyers near the Scarborough Shoal. The 7th Fleet issued a statement saying that it “has around 70 to 80 ships and submarines at its disposal along with 150 aircraft, and added that it operates 365 days throughout the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.”

The report also said, “The presence of the 7th Fleet flagship in the vicinity of the Scarborough coincided with the opening of the Balikatan Exercises 2014, wherein 5,500 Philippines and U.S. forces will be conducting simultaneous drills and humanitarian activities in different parts Luzon and the Visayas.”

With the 7th Fleet operating all year round in the Indo-AsiaPacific region, it serves as a warning to all nations, particularly China, that the South China Sea, which is one of the busiest maritime routes, should – nay, must! – be open to free navigation by any country.

The size of the 7th Fleet would continue to increase as planned by President Barack Obama’s “Pivot to Asia,” which would “rebalance” 60% of U.S. naval and air forces to the IndoAsia-Pacific region.

After more than two decades since the closure of the Subic Naval Base, which the 7th Fleet called home, many believe that she’s back in full swing. Wrong!

The 7th Fleet has never left.

She’s always been at sea vigilant as ever.

Those Guys Celebrates Five Years with Premiere at RMTC

hey’ve hit the five-year milestone and Winnipeg’s most versatile allmale a cappella group is celebrating

with its biggest show yet! On Tuesday, Theatre Centre with special guest, Renee May 20, 2014, Those Guys will perform Lamoureux. for the first time at the Royal Manitoba Made up of eight performers who represent a cross-section of the Winnipeg music and theatre community, Those Guys have built a reputation for dynamic, feelgood performances since 2009. Their repertoire, which ranges from The Nylons to Justin Timberlake, features complex (often original) musical arrangements performed without a single instrument.

“Every year, we push ourselves to do something new and challenging,” says Bernie Pastorin, the group’s artistic director and founder. “This show meets that challenge, packed with new music and choreography you can’t help but sing and dance along to. If you’re looking for a fun night out with the whole family, you won’t want to miss it.”

Over five years, Those Guys have performed in venues throughout Winnipeg and toured across Manitoba and Alberta.

3.Decide whether you’re ready for commitment.

Resume Writing Concepts, Part 1: Getting Started

A

resume is a self-marketing tool used by job seekers to present value to the person responsible for hiring decisions.

Perhaps only second to interview skills, writing an effective resume that clearly presents a candidate’s value, abilities, and what they can offer a company is one of the tasks that job seekers find most

challenging, yet it is essential to job search success.

Generally speaking, a candidate will be hired based on the value they present to a prospective employer. Clearly presenting the value you have to offer to an organization is especially important if you have not met the employer in person.

Many hiring professionals spend only 10–30 seconds initially looking over a resume to decide whether to give it further review, and then consider the applicant for an interview. Job seekers must not only submit a resume that clearly states relevant skills, experience, education, and accomplishments, but also make

sure that their resume is formatted in a way that helps the reader to quickly identify key details and determine whether the applicant could be a good fit for the job.

A good resume will answer the question “Does this job applicant have the skills, abilities and qualifications that will enable him/ her to fulfill the responsibilities of this job and meet o r e x c e e d organizational goals?”

Following the three steps below will give you a head start in developing an effective resume: 1. Identify what jobs you are interested in and qualified to perform.

Before writing a resume, identify what jobs you are qualified to do.

Read job descriptions or talk with a career coach and conduct career research. Some positions may require that you have a license to practice, or security clearance or First Aid training. Find out what is required and what is optional or just an asset. When applying for jobs, you should at least have 70– 80% of the education, experience,

and skills that the employer is asking for.

2. Conduct career research to discover local job options, job titles, and requirements.

Different countries use different job titles. A recent

newcomer found out that the job title of “Associate Consultant,” which he used in his home country, was unclear to Canadian employers. Once he matched his past job duties to the relevant Canadian job title of “Programmer Analyst,” recruiters started calling him as they had a better understanding of his past experience.

3. Identify past job duties that match what the employer is asking for.

Next, create a list of all of your previous tasks and responsibilities that match what the employer is expecting in the job you are applying for. When an employer can see the match between your past experience and what their job position requires, your chances of being called for an interview will increase.

To Apostrophize or Not to Apostrophize

T

his greeting has obviously trended on social-networking sites a few days ago. However, some are still unsure of how to write the greeting— Mother’s Day Mothers’ Day Mothers Day Which is correct?

The first one—Mother’s Day (singular form)—is implied as meaning "a day to celebrate 'the mother' image or 'the mother character.'"

The second—Mothers’ Day (plural form)—which is the one I prefer, means "a day to celebrate mothers."

(Subliminally, using the plural form is being more considerate for including all the mothers and not only of one’s mother.)

With an apostrophe (Mother’s Day or Mothers’ Day), one is using the possessive case of mother/mothers.

In this, it is being implied that the day being celebrated belongs to her (one’s mother or the mother image or the mother character) or to them (all mothers). Grammatically, the word ‘mother/mothers’ is possessing the word day.

The third—Mothers Day (without an apostrophe)—is using the attributive case. The day is being attributed to mothers. Grammatically, the word ‘mothers’ (the attributive noun in the phrase) is modifying the word ‘day’ (the modified noun, or the noun being modified).

The Last Leaf All three forms of the said greeting are grammatically acceptable. The greeter is now free to choose which among the three she fancies without sacrificing grammatical integrity.

Vangie is a graduate of the University of Santo Tomas, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology.

She originally moved to Winnipeg in 1993, and met her husband Mar Mance in 1995.

She continued developing her skills in the medical technology field for 17 years at hospitals and clinics around Winnipeg. Finally, she decided to change careers and became self-employed in 2011.
