Stigma of corruption

W

ith less than a year to the 2016 presidential elections, the presidential musical chairs game has started in earnest. And there are several games going all at once by groups called political parties or “coalitions.”

To start with, these political parties are not ideological parties like what you’d see in the United States and other countries. The Philippines’ political parties are just vehicles — like the country’s unique colorful jeepneys —

where politicians can take a ride hoping that it would bring them to their destinations. However, if the jeepney they’re riding in is too slow or is caught in a traffic jam, they can always transfer to another jeepney.

Having said that, let’s take a look at what’s going on with the various presidential musical chairs games. Of course the biggest game is in President Benigno “P-Noy” Aquino III’s Liberal Party (LP). There are many ambitious participants but only one will be anointed. What would happen to those who would be eliminated? In Philippine politics, there are no gracious losers, only sore losers.

Right now, the LP has only Mar Roxas vying for the party’s presidential nomination, the process of which is for P-Noy to “anoint” who the nominee will be. But Roxas, whom P-Noy had appointed as Secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to give him more “public exposure,” lacks the popular support for a presidential run. Recent surveys show him running behind three or four other potential contenders.

With an anemic showing that doesn’t seem to improve his chances of winning, P-Noy was hesitant to throw his support behind Roxas, who had given way to P-Noy in the 2010 presidential election and settled to be P-Noy’s running mate.

P-Noy’s dilemma However, Roxas lost the vice presidency to Jejomar “Jojo” Binay, who, in the final weeks of the 2010 elections, overtook Roxas in the vice presidential derby. As it turned out, a hitherto secret organization known as “Noy-Bi” was credited for Binay’s surge in the campaign.

It’s interesting to note that “NoyBi” was not a LP-sanctioned campaign organization.

However, it was organized by relatives, friends, and allies who

believed that Binay was a true Aquino supporter whose link to the Aquino family goes back to the People Power days of the late president Cory Aquino.

What the LP sanctioned was the “Noy-Mar” campaign committee, which consisted mainly of LP old hands and stalwarts.

And this was supposedly the organization that pushed hard to get Roxas elected.

But the resources the Noy-Bi had were far too much than what the Noy-Mar organization had. With a campaign chest brimming with contributions from the Aquino and Cojuangco families and their rich allies, Roxas lost to Binay.

In the upcoming 2016 elections, we’d probably see Binay pitted against Roxas again, but this time their contest would move up to the presidential level. However, that would only happen if P-Noy would stick to his promise to support Roxas’ presidential run in 2016. But the problem is Roxas has a ghost of a chance of beating Binay.

Game changer The sudden rise of neophyte Sen. Grace Poe in recent SWS and Pulse of Asia surveys was a game changer. No longer is Binay seen as the unbeatable presidential candidate, the surge in Poe’s polls numbers has toppled Binay from his lofty pedestal, which he had distinctly occupied ever since he won the vice-presidency in 2010.

Seeing Poe’s presidential potential, P-Noy invited her and Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero to Malacanang to talk about a “united ticket” that would include Roxas since Grace and Chiz aren’t LP members but Independents.

But their bond was so tight that Grace has made it known that if she decided to run for president next year, she’d want Chiz to be her running mate. Chiz said that he’d support Grace in any decision she makes.

What P-Noy has in mind is to have Roxas team up with either

Grace or Chiz as his running mate, which means that one of them would be sacrificed for the good of the LP coalition. The problem with this arrangement is what would be the role of the person who is sacrificed? But before we answer that question, we should first ask if Grace or Chiz were willing to run for vice president under an LP “united ticket”?

Although Grace hadn’t decided yet whether she’s going to run for president or not, she had taken herself out of the vicepresidential race next year, saying that if she’s going to run for a higher office, it might as well be the presidency.

In the case of Chiz, who has been high on the surveys for vice president, it’s not known if he was willing to be somebody’s running mate other than Grace.

Needless to say, he has to make his decision whether to run for president, which is unlikely, or vice president. He could run as Binay’s running mate since the two have good relationship in the past. In 2010, Chiz was one of the leaders of the “Noy-Bi” group, a fact that could dampen any attempt to pair him up as Roxas’ running mate.

If Chiz accepts an offer to team up with Binay, they might have the right chemistry to run a good campaign. With Binay having all money to spend in the campaign and Chiz tapping the Filipino taipans’ bottomless money pits, they could be a formidable team. However, with Binay’s corruption and plunder cases hanging over his head and the strong resentment against China right now, a Binay-Chiz tandem might not be the way to go. But Chiz has the flexibility to team up with anybody because he, like Grace, is an Independent.

In the case of Binay, nobody is willing to run as his running mate.

Has the stigma of corruption finally found its mark on Binay?

Angeline and Erik Wow Winnipeg

he recent concert of the Philippine-based celebrity singers Angeline Quinto and Erik Santos was successful. The packed venue was teeming with screaming fans and spectators almost after every song of Quinto and Santos, both as a duet and as individual performers. Quinto's deadpan-style comedic spiels inbetween songs were effective, sending the crowd to laughter here and there. Santos's superb vocal prowess was especially highlighted by his performance of a medley of Broadway theme songs with a backdrop of video slides depicting multiplicates of his own self singing the backing, contrapuntal, and complementary vocal parts. After the engaging and worthwhile couple of hours' singing and jocund stage interplay between the two, Quinto and Santos happily obliged to have their pictures with the fans taken at the designated photo

corner at the venue's lobby. The concert's success may be attributed mostly to the hard work and hands-on promotion of the couple Katya and Todd Labelle with their production team Todd Labelle Promotions. Yes, there are indeed so many Filipinos in Winnipeg; however, this does not

automatically translate to modest ticket sales if the producers will not take the initiative to promote their project with a good enough lead time. Ultimately, the producers' good reputation and friendly relations with their prospective goers and supporters count a lot too.

Ube Unleashed at BAON Filipino Nights Ube ice cream brings an interesting mix to one of the dishes featured at the opening night of Chef Allan Pineda’s Filipino pop-up series

I

won’t forget the first time I tried ube ice cream. “I thought to myself, how is this possible, purple?” Purple was the colour of many things, and this colour was relegated to a crayon box or characters from Sesame Street, but purple ice cream?

In that instant,I tasted this strange and oh so delicious frozen treat, it was over. Move over vanilla, get out of the way chocolate, ube was hands down my new favourite ice cream. As an elementary school kid, proclaiming a new dessert flavour was a big deal.

Ube is still one of my favourite deserts and can be seen in all forms of traditional Filipino sweets. You can literally find ube at many Filipino gatherings and in-store food products at the local supermarket.

Ube ice cream (my favorite) including ube puto, this purple root vegetable is not to be confused with a potato as it is a yam and can be used in dishes like ube with macapuno, ube with flan and ube cake. It can also be made into a jam and used in halo-halo or in a warm pandesal to make a scrumptious sweet sandwich snack. Ube is versatile and delicious

Being a cook at heart and Canadian born, BAON Filipino Nights was where I can fuse Filipino cuisine with non-traditional dishes. In this case Italian style Gnocchi, originally made with potatoes I switched the starch with our beloved ube. The final dish that rounded out an 8-course dinner at my first Filipino dinner pop-up was ube gnocchi with a vanilla bean cream cheese sauce, ube polvoron, Skyflake crumble edible flowers and served with a health scoop of ube ice cream.

Opening night menu included lychee martini; Filipino Caesar salad made with calamansi Caesar dressing, pandesal croutons, tocino bacon bits; trio of junk food: longanisa corn dog with banana ketchup, queso de bolla jalapeno popper, taro root perogy; Dim Sum Sampler: pork adobo siomai, sinigang soup dumpling, calamari with buffalo adobong pusit sauce; mango mojito; Ginitaan w/ snow crab, rock salt baked prawn, snake beans; Kare Kare w/ osso busco, garlic fried rice risotto and final course of ube gnocchi,

More celebrities air opinion on lip-synching issue

nternational singer Lea Salonga as well as TV hosts Boy Abunda and Vice Ganda has joined the fray on the lipsynching issue that came up when young singer Rhap Salazar took to social media to express his disapproval over singers who lip sync.

In a radio interview, Lea said the music industry is a competitive market and producers naturally opt to give chance to singers who have potential to sell

their album. The internationallyacclaimed singer advises artists to offer something fresh to make people shell out their hard-earned money for their albums. For his part, Boy said he disagrees with Rhap’s view since even the best performers have to lip-synch sometimes depending on the situation. Meanwhile, Vice said non-singers should not be barred from having concerts or releasing albums because they also help the industry.

Opening act for Grammy winners releases new album Local musician Tiffany Ponce launches Gratitude album on August 8

The R&B/pop album features the new jack swing style from the late 80’s and early 90’s. A selection of its tracks have been on Rhythm 104.7FM’s regular rotation.

Though Ponce draws her influences from a particular era, Gratitude features a range of different styles. She notes one particular ballad called Fairy Tales solely features a piano and Korean instrument called the haegeum.

“The haegeum is a very rare instrument in Canada,” says Ponce. “Sosun Suh is one of only two haegeum players in all of Canada, so it’s very special to have her on this album.”

The album features local producers Bryce Kaminsky, Jason Gordon and Blitz Beats; Jeff Savage from Nashville; and Landlocked Beats from Montreal. There are also a number of collaborations on the album, including Wish List featuring Damon Pampolina, a former Mickey Mouse Club

Mouseketeer and member of 90’s pop group The Party. Additional collaborations include Superladies featuring Crystle Lighting, Brave featuring Lyrical Militant and What If She Knew featuring Desi Ma. “I want to write songs that touch and inspire people, or songs that people can relate to,” says Ponce. “Music is such a powerful thing, and it can get you through a lot of hard times. Sometimes, you can hear a song on the radio and it can be so uplifting.”

The launch of Gratitude will take place shortly before Ponce’s first tour across western Canada. Her hopes are to take on eastern Canada next spring. The official tour dates have yet to be confirmed, but updates will be available on tiffanyponce.com.

Ponce’s Gratitude release party will take place on Aug. 8 at the Park Theatre. The event will be hosted by MJ (host of The Rise Up Show on Rhythm 104.7FM) and feature opening acts R&B/pop singer John Sy and beatboxer Joshua Bernardo.

Tickets are available to pre-purchase for $20 at the Park Theatre, which includes a physical copy of the Gratitude album.

“Back in high school, I never imagined I would be opening up for people I was listening to all the time on the radio or on my stereo at home.”

Local R&B/pop artist Tiffany Ponce has performed on the same stage as international Grammy award-winning artists Shaggy and 112. On Aug. 8, 2015, she’ll headline her own show for the launch of her new album Gratitude at the Park Theatre.

Ponce debuted her first EP Only the Beginning in 2012. Though the six-song collection focused on storytelling, a tune called Tell Me I Can’t touched on the theme of empowerment. Gratitude is a further exploration of this theme, and also focuses on the ideas of hope, love, faith and strength.

“I feel like within the last few years, I’ve found a greater purpose to what I’m doing in music,” says Ponce. “On this album, there are songs about going through different obstacles and difficult situations. There’s an underlying theme of always trying to learn from every

Great Grandparents of the Year 2015

he Original Filipino Seniors Association of Manitoba, Inc. (OFSAM) celebrated its First Grandparents and Great Grandparents on May 30th 2015 at the Pampanga Banquet Hall. Tony & Letty Antonio were selected as Great Grandparents of the Year 2015.

The event was well attended by some of our government officials, MP Lawrence Toet and his Executive Assistant Shawn, Deputy Mayor Mike Pagtakhan, Councilor Cindy Gilroy together with Wade, our dear friends Larry & Tova Vickar and the whole Antonio Clan.

Also present were president of FSGW Aida Champagne, president of FILCASA, Ella Yambao and friends from the community. Jesus Is Lord Church Pastor George Dela Rosa led the invocation.

Where Did We Go Wrong? (conclusion)

ome people ask why activists are always critical of regimes. The reason for this is that many nationalist activists are acutely aware of the Constitution, the history, and the reasons other countries progress economically. Many of us know that Japan and Korea, to cite a few, were destroyed during World War II; and that, in the case of South Korea, the country was heavily impacted in the war with the north.

Despite the devastation suffered by these two countries, every day while I drive around Winnipeg, I see Japanese and South Korean cars. Even cellphones and other electronic gadgets come from these countries. The Philippines, for its part, produces and exports products like bottled tuyo (dried fish), sardines, tapa (beef jerky), and "junk" foods like Chippy and Corniks. Although there is nothing wrong in producing and exporting these products, it should not stop here. The Philippine government should aim for industrialization, which it should have done more than fifty years

ago. When Japanese and Koreans travel to the Philippines, they go as investors or tourists; but when Filipinos go to these countries, it’s basically to work as Japayukis, domestic helpers, or industrial workers. Many Filipinos would laugh at China back in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, saying that it was a communist country; but now, even the United States is heavily indebted to China, which has billions of investments in Africa, Latin America, and North America including Canada. Where is the Philippines in all of these?

This begs the question, “Where did we go wrong?”

The greatest lesson that I learned from being a part of these historical events is that, it is never the great personalities that make history but the people. As long as a president, no matter who she or he may be, does not implement the people’s agenda, then the people have the power to remove their leader. We have seen this time and again. When Benigno S. Aquino III became President through elections, people were happy

and hopeful and were thinking that progress would happen.

But having been in power for almost five years, he still follows the script of the same puppetry narrative. Up to now, even the Constitution that was ratified during the term of his mother, former President Corazon Aquino, particularly the provisions on nationalist industrialization and agrarian reform found in Article 12, have not been implemented.

The slogan of the present regime-“Daang Matuwid”--is just another crooked road and a plan that affirms neo-liberal policies.

In an article posted on Huffington Blog titled “Philippines ‘Mirage’ Economy: Why it’s worse than a bubble?”, Richard Javad Heydarian writes that, “three years into the Aquino leadership, however, it has little to show in terms of major infrastructural projects and cutting down of red tape and bureaucratic uncertainty. With barely three years left in his office, the [President's] introduction of decisive measures to arrest the decline of the manufacturing and agricultural sectors, are yet to kick in. The government has missed its targets on the implementation of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program Extension and Reforms (CARPER) to the fury of millions of farmers and rural citizens, while the impending integration of the Philippines

into the regional common market will most likely batter its already fragile manufacturing sector, which has been struggling with declining demand in the intraregional production chains in recent years.” That served as another proof of the failure to initiate the implementation of the policies enshrined in Article 12 of the Constitution.

Going back to the Agrarian Reform of the Corazon Aquino regime, Satur Ocampo wrote in his article “At Ground Level,” published in the Winnipeg-based community newspaper Ang Peryodiko (November 16-30, 2014): “Her government asked the Court of Appeals to rule favourably on the Cojuangcos’ appeal, which the court promptly did. In 1987, she issued Proclamation 131 and Executive Order 229, defining her agrarian reform program, which included stock distribution option as a mode of implementation, instead of land distribution. The SDO was incorporated in RA 6657 (CARP), signed in 1988.” This is a proof that Aquino’s Agrarian Reform is bogus. True to the line of thinking of the powers that be, the present regime is also engaged in attempts to change the Philippine charter’s nationalist provisions through ChaCha (Charter Change).

are characterized by betrayal of the Constitution of the Republic where the preamble states “We, the sovereign Filipino people, imploring the aid of Almighty God, in order to build a just and humane society, and establish a Government that shall embody our ideals and aspirations, promote the common good, conserve and develop our patrimony, and secure to ourselves and our posterity, the blessings of independence and democracy under the rule of law and a regime of truth, justice, freedom, love, equality, and peace, do ordain and promulgate this Constitution.”

The failure of the government to provide decent jobs led to the continuous exodus of professionals, numbering about five thousand daily (2014 statistics). Unfortunately, the country is just a paradise for foreign monopoly corporations and few rich families. If all the regimes failed to implement Nationalist Industrialization and Agrarian Reform that are enshrined in the Constitution, what more can they do to improve the welfare of the people? The Constitution, at the given stage of our people’s history, is the embodiment of the will of the people, thus it is sacred.

So what happened to our so called democracy? Where did we go wrong?

Another Rocking Journey in Winnipeg

T

he concert of the band Journey at MTS Centre was less attended than the previous one, but musically it was better in certain points. As usual, the band did a great job in presenting their high-quality and well-made music. Keyboardist / occasional guitar player Jonathan Cain and lead guitarist Neil Schon were in their fine forms, producing their sound and melodies crisply and precisely. Bass player Ross Valory was delivering his parts in equal certainty, and with his usual cheerful stage personality.

New drummer Omar Hakim did his respective parts to the beat and post, serving as a steady mesh for the whole band. However, more remarkable was the performance of Filipino vocalist Arnel Pineda, who aside from having given justice, as always, to the songs of the band in which he has been the lead vocalist for seven years now, sounded very relaxed, confident,

and in a better shape than during the band's last gig in Winnipeg.

Pineda's animated stage moves and ability to reach the song's high notes gracefully clearly overshadowed his previous uneasiness. Not just the Filipino concertgoers but the entire audience were cheering and raving on after every song of the band.

Journey started their set immediately with the classic "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" and ended with another favorite, "Don't Stop Believin'," apart from the one-song encore. Included in the set were classics like "Open Arms," "Wheel in the Sky," "Faithfully," "Any Way You Want It," and "Only the Young" as well as a few newer songs like "City of Hope" from the latest album, Eclipse (2011)--which, Pineda said, Schon and Cain wrote especially for Manila (one of the main cities in the Philippines).

Formed in 1973 in California, United States, Journey is a Progressive/Pop Rock band that shot to commercial popularity in the 1980s with the strength of singles like "Open Arms," "Wheel in the Sky," and "Don't Stop Believin'," especially during the tenure of their former lead vocalist Steve Perry. In the band's long and enduring career, they have released 14 studio

albums, from 1975's self-titled to 2011's Eclipse, which was Pineda's second for the band.

The democratic and down-toearth nature of the band's chief members and songwriters Schon and Cain has become very apparent during the arrival of Pineda in the group. They did not relegate Pineda to serve as only the singer; they shared the songwriting credits with him as

well. In the latest album, two of the dozen tracks had Pineda as a co-songwriter, "She's a Mystery" and "To Whom It May Concern."

The concert was worthwhile, obvious in the seeming content of the attenders who gave the band a loud parting applause. Everyone left the venue smiling and partly singing and humming to the melody of the last songs.

Petra, Jordan, the "Lost City of Stone"

O

ne of the places you have to see before you die according to the BBC and Smithsonian Magazine is Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the new Seven Wonders of the World located in the south of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan about three-hour drive from its capital, Amman.

Petra, which means "rock" in Arabic, also described as a "rose-red city half as old as time" due to the colour of the stone out of which it is carved, remained hidden to the Western world until 1812 when it was rediscovered by a Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt who disguised himself as an Arabic scholar to infiltrate the mysterious lost city of stone. Petra was the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom from around 6th century BC and became an important centre for trade and commerce when it was absorbed into the Roman Empire until a catasthropic earthquake destroyed the city around 663 AD. (Nabataeans are ancient nomadic Arab people from north Arabia who were noted for their skill in water management.)

We approached the ancient city by foot (motorised transport cannot enter Petra although horse-drawn carriages, donkeys and camels can take you around

the archaeological sites) through the main entrance called the "Siq" (literally the "shaft"), the dim narrow gorge about 3 meters wide winding its way approximately 1.2 kms long with high walls of rock on either side that rise hundreds of feet to the sky. As we came to the end of the "siq" the first and the most impressive of all Petra's monuments, the "Al Khazneh" known as the Treasury comes into view. Carved out of solid sandstone rock face, the structure has classical Greek architectural details with figures of 4 eagles on the top. The Treasury has been featured as a secret temple in the last scenes of the popular 1989 Steven Spielberg film "Indiana

Jones and the Last Crusade".

After viewing the Treasury we came next to the "Street of Facade", a large canyon lined with facades of various tall and impressive royal tombs identifed as the Urn tomb built high on the mountain side and requires climbing up a number of flights of stairs, the Silk tomb with rich colour of the sandstone and the Corinthian tomb which is worn out but ornate. The palace tomb is very wide and has three distinct stories in its facade. In front of the tomb is a large stage and courtyard.

created by the Nabataeans but later refurbished by the Romans.

High above Petra overlooking the valley is the "Ad-Deir" Monastery carved from a chunk of mountain rock.

Climbing the 800 rock cut steps to get to the monastery is another experience in itself.

You can also journey up to the "High Place of Sacrifice" on a mountain summit that contains sacred open-air rock altars once used for ritual killings of animals.

Note: An entrance fee is required. To explore the site you'll need comfortable walking shoes, bottled water and a hat to keep the sun off your head. Enjoy your trip!

He was up against a lot of stiff competition as Team EXTRA and BroDGals came in 2nd and 3rd respectively after the judging.

Report from MBC Trade Chair: The Canadian Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (CanCham) Trade Mission On behalf of the MFBC Board of Directors, we would like to thank CanCham and all the delegates from the Philippines for including Winnipeg in their recent trade mission agenda from June 11 – 13, 2015. We were delighted to have had the opportunity to host CanCham and its delegates, and hope this will be only one of the many future trade missions.

We were very successful in handling the CanCham delegation within a very short planning timeframe, and are looking forward to delivering a far more impressive program in the future. MFBC’s collaboration with WTC Winnipeg will continue and we have been asked to participate in their promotion of Centralia 2016 here in Winnipeg next May. MFBC plans to be part of hosting the CanCham delegation when they visit Winnipeg in May 2016!
