SEASON’S SWEET TREAT

No Christmas is complete without the traditional Filipino treats like Puto Bumbong, probably the most craved food during the Yuletide season. And after the Simbang Gabi kicked off last December 16, all the more that we yearn for the purple dessert experience as we picture the vibrant scene encapsulated in a colorful tradition stalls lined up steaming the purple rice mixture in bamboo tubes or “bumbong ng kawayan” and serving it hot with margarine, muscovado sugar and freshly grated coconut.

Thanks to these couples - Al and Carina, Roden and Jocelyn for reliving the tradition and satisfying the Filipino community’s puto bumbong craving.

Puto Bumbong Craving Satisfied!

Al and Carina Tongcua together with Roden and Jocelyn Policarpio decided to incorporate puto bumbong in their catering

business menu 3 years ago.

Borrowing the family recipe from Carina's mom, Nanay Connie, they offerred puto bumbong just

for the Christmas season. Since then, their holiday celebration was never the same. They had to produce and work even through

Christmas and New Year’s eves to keep up with orders.

Just for this year, few hours after Al posted their annual puto bumbong offering on Facebook, they received a crazy number of orders , expectedly reaching up to about 700 come New Year's eve. Good thing that they have devised an efficient pick up/drop off system for their customers, ensuring that puto bumbong is served fresh and hot off their production facility at Bulldog Pizza.

Albeit another busy Christmas season in keeping pace

with current at capacity orders, the Tongcua’s and Policarpio’s express their deepest gratitude to the Filipino community whom they love bringing this season's sweet treat to.

E

very year, people around the world, regardless of their religious beliefs or affiliation, celebrate Christmas.

For one day of the year, December 25, people reach out to each other and to friends they haven’t seen or heard from since last year or many years ago. Oftentimes, they send Christmas cards with family pictures and short notes.

Christmas is a day that Christians renew their faith in Jesus Christ. On Christmas Day, families gather and have a feast and enjoy each other’s company and exchange gifts. The festivity lasts till late at night singing their favorite karaoke songs and line dancing until they’re exhausted.

And then it’s time to say goodbye, hug each other and say, “Peace be with you.”

Christmas Truce Which reminds me of the “Christmas Truce” during the First World War 104 years ago.

On Christmas Eve, the British and French armies were manning the 27-mile Western Front fiercely defending French territory from the advancing German Army.

Across the British and French trenches, as near as 200 feet away, the Germans were dug in. What separated the opposing armies was a place called “No Man’s Land.”

On Christmas Eve, one of the most incredible -- and unusual -- events in human history took place: the Germans started placing candles on trees on “No Man’s Land.” Lit with candles, the “Christmas” trees looked awesome. The Germans

A prayer for Pax Mundi began singing Christmas songs and the British and French troops responded by singing too. Soon the entire “No Man’s Land” turned into a symphonic Christmas celebration.

The Germans proposed a “Christmas truce” and the French and British troops accepted.

By Christmas morning, “No Man’s Land” was filled with fraternizing soldiers, sharing rations and gifts, singing and more solemnly burying their dead. Soon they were even playing soccer, mostly with improvised balls.

According to one account, “proper burials took place as soldiers from both sides mourned together and paid their respect.”

When the generals heard about the “Christmas truce,” they were aghast and ordered their soldiers to start shooting at each other. The soldiers resumed shooting but most of them -- for several days -- aimed their rifles at the sky and the stars. In some sectors, the truce continued until New Year’s Day. After all, how can “friends” shoot at each other?

It happened again in the Korean Peninsula in 1953 when China and North Korea signed the Korean War Truce with the United Nations and South Korea, which begs the question: Why can’t it happen in the Philippines today? What is so difficult that we Filipinos cannot settle our own differences? We need a truce with the communist insurgents and Muslim separatists. It’s brother against brother and nobody is winning. What’s keeping us apart?

Periods of peace in history The Pax Romana (Roman Peace) was the first period of peace that endured for 206 years from 27 BC to AD 180. During this period, the Roman Empire achieved its greatest territorial expansion and its population reached 70 million people -- a third of the world’s population at that time.

The decline of the empire began during the dictatorial reign of Commodus. It marked the descent “from the kingdom of gold to one of iron and rust.”

The Pax Mongolica (Mongol Peace) was the relative peace that followed the conquests of Genghis Khan and his successors

in the 13th and 14th centuries. It stabilized the social, cultural, and economic life of the people of the vast Eurasian territory under the Mongol Empire. It spanned from Southeast Asia to Eastern Europe, effectively connecting the Eastern World with the Western World. The famous Silk Road that linked the trade centers in Asia and Europe came under the rule of the Mongols. The end of Pax Mongolica was marked with the outbreak of the Black Death, which was spread along the Silk Road in the mid-14th century.

The Pax Britannica (British Peace) was the longest period of peace during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries when the British Empire became the sole global power.

The empire’s navy controlled most of the trade routes and enjoyed unchallenged sea domination. The outbreak of World War I marked the end of Pax Britannica; however, some historians said that it was the Suez Canal crisis in 1956 that ended Pax Britannica.

Pax Americana (American Peace) refers to the period after the end of the Cold War in 1989 with the fall of the Soviet Empire.

However, some historians pegged the beginning of Pax Americana at the end of World War II at which time the United States gained military and economic power unmatched by other nations. With the collapse of the Soviet Empire and the end of the Cold War, the US became the sole superpower.

The US navy ruled the seas with 11 supercarrier battle groups and around 70 nuclear-powered submarines.

The U.S. has airbases around the world and large numbers of troops deployed to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) countries as well as Japan and South Korea.

Today, America’s two geopolitical rivals – Russia and China – are jockeying for position to become the next world hegemon. Indeed, China is vying to be the next world empire, Pax Sinica (Chinese Peace). Currently, China is building the new Silk Road known as “One Belt, One Road” (OBOR) that would link Asia, Europe, and Africa. OBOR

is the answer to Chinese President Xi Jinping’s “China Dream,” which is to reshape global trade with Beijing at its core. China would then become the world’s new imperial power.

Meanwhile, Russia is competing for world dominance, too. Although not considered an economic power, Russia’s military prowess is catching up with the U.S.’s military capability. Would a Pax Russica (Russian Peace) period emerge in the future? In a post-Putin era, the U.S. and Russia could become strategic allies to counter Pax Sinica. Then what?

But why not Pax Mundi (World Peace)? The foundation for world peace was laid down when 51 countries established the United Nations (UN) in 1945 for the purpose of maintaining international peace.

The UN and its 15-member Security Council operated with the goal of resolving conflicts without wars or declarations of war. But oftentimes, the Security Council failed to pass resolutions that would resolve conflicts because of the veto power vested on each of the five permanent members, to wit: United States, United Kingdom, France, China, and Russia.

During the Cold War, the Soviet Union exercised its veto power 107 times out of the total number of 220 vetoes cast.

Needless to say, a Security Council permanent member can cast a veto whenever the “national interest” of that country is threatened.

With any one of the five permanent members casting a “No” vote against a peace resolution in the Security Council, world peace is imperiled. And that’s the reason why we will never achieve Pax Mundi, which makes one wonder: While there are pros and cons about it, shouldn’t the five permanent members be stripped of their “veto” power to make the UN a truly democratic institution for world peace? Or would it lead to more global conflicts?

At the end of the day, as we celebrate Christmas, let’s give a prayer for Pax Mundi. Merry Christmas. May peace be with you all.

A gift of shelter "There was no room for them in the inn. Luke 2:7".

Life was tough for one of our closest friends and her family. At age forty, she had a heart attack and bypass surgery and learned that she had coronary artery disease. A year later, her sixteenyear-old daughter became paralyzed as the result of a car accident. Our friend quit her job to take care of her daughter, and the bills started piling up. Soon they would be facing eviction.

Our friend was so angry with GOD that she stopped praying.

Then came Christmas Eve of 2015. A young girl knocked on our friend's door. The girl wished her a "Merry Christmas," gave her an envelope, and left quickly.

Inside was a gift that would cover our friend's housing needs for the next year. The attached note read, "PLEASE ACCEPT THIS GIFT IN HONOR OF THE "MAN" WHOSE BIRTHDAY WE CELEBRATE ON THIS HOLY NIGHT. LONG AGO, HIS FAMILY ALSO HAD A SHELTER PROBLEM." Luke 2 tells the story of

Later in His life, Jesus said of Himself, "The Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head" (Matthew 8:20).

Jesus understood our friend's troubles. He brought our friend hope and met her needs, through others who contributed funds.

We can cast ALL our cares on HIM (1 Peter 5:7). "Cast all your anxiety to Him because He cares for you." In Christ, we find shelter (Psalm 61:3-4).

God will take care of you still to the end; O what a Father, Redeemer, and Friend!

Jesus will answer whenever you call; He will take care of you; trust Him for all!

You do the casting, God will do the caring.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award

he Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Manitoba Division’s Annual Silver Certificate and Pin Ceremony, was held on November 15th, 2018. Von Jamora and Vanessa Matias were two of the 24 young Manitobans who were presented their Silver Award by The Lt.-Gov. of Manitoba Janice Filmon. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award carries international

recognition in over 130 countries around the world. The Award is a non-competitive challenge achievement program, available to all young people regardless of circumstance or ability. It recognizes the extra-curricular activities of youth 14 to 24 years of age in four different areas.

Mindfulness at Christmas

S

omething that we are hearing about more and more these days is the concept of Mindfulness.

Mindfulness is basically the ability to be fully present to the present moment. Mindfulness is the psychological process of bringing one's attention to experiences that are occurring now.

Those who strive to practice mindfulness have noticed some amazing benefits. On the emotional level they have noticed a reduction in stress, anxiety, and worry. Mindfulness has also been a great benefit to those who suffer from bouts of depression.

On the Physical level, blood pressure is lowered, heart rate

slows down and breathing is calmed.

As wonderful as the benefits might be, mindfulness is a great challenge. Typically we are either caught up in the future, or lost in the past, but rarely are we solely in the present. In fact at times, we live as if the present does not even exist.

An inability to be in the present moment makes the state of mindfulness something difficult to achieve.

In the life of faith, living the present is very important.

After all, God lives in the now, in the present moment. In God, the future and the past is now. In God, everything is now.

To live in God is to live in the now. To know God is to be in the now. For, it is always in the now that we can find God. The more we live in the now, the more we live in God. The call of the Advent Gospel is to welcome Christ in our lives as he is present in the now: not only as the one who came 2000 years ago, and, not only as the one who will come at the end times, but rather, to welcome him as the one who is in the here and now.

For, the celebration of Christmas tells us of the closeness of God in our lives in this very moment.

In other words, it is the call to be mindful of every event of our lives in order to know how God is speaking through those events now.

In the Gospel of Luke (1:3945) we hear that crowds coming to John asking, “what shall we do?” In essence, they are asking what shall we do to know God, and to ready ourselves for the coming of the messiah. John tells them, “Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none, and who ever has food must do likewise.” In other words, to be mindful to the moment you are in and respond to that moment.

Here-in lies the challenge: to respond to the moment mindfully.

In any given day, life is filled with all kinds of occurrences. Happy events, sad events, life-altering events, comforting and consoling events, challenging events and overwhelming events. Too often, these events may seem as mere nuisances either recycling our past or getting in the way of our future. These events, however,

are not mere nuisances but opportunities to encounter God. In every event or occurrence, God is present and revealing something significant. If we are not present, either because we are wound up in the past or caught up in the future, we ultimately miss something that God wishes to reveal to us. When we fail to enter into the present moment, either because we feel it’s too painful, intimidating, irrelevant, superficial, or insignificant, then we miss the God who speaks in every moment for our good and well being.

God is in the now - no matter what that now might be.

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, God was there When Jesus grew up in Nazareth, God was there When Jesus began his mission and ministry in Galilee, God was there When Jesus fought Satan in the dessert, God was there When Jesus was crucified to the Cross on Good Friday afternoon, God was there When Jesus laid dead in the tomb for three days, God was there When Jesus was raised in Glory on Easter morn, God was there God was in every moment.

And, every moment revealed something to Jesus, not only about God, but also about himself and the world around him. Jesus was always mindful of the present moment. Therefore, he never missed the presence of God speaking to him. He lived in God and God, therefore, could live in him. So too is this opportunity available to us.

In a few days we will celebrate Christmas, the great inbreaking of God into our lives. In celebrating the birth of Jesus, we once again welcome an encounter with God who is in our presence.

In the Christmas event, we once again learn that it is always in the ‘now’ that we must seek God. It is in the now that we must ask ourselves the following questions: What is God saying to me in the experience or situation I find myself in? What is God telling me about who God is, and who I am and what the world around me ultimately means?

Duterte had also linked Loot, retired general Marcelo Garbo, and other generals to Roxas. Loot survived an ambush back in May this year, but his 2 drivers, helper, and a wharf porter were injured.

Roxas’ ally, Caloocan Rep. Edgar Erice, said the former Interior secretary has decided not to make a big deal out of the President’s statement. Roxas will run for the Senate in 2019.

Philippines’ Catriona Gray is Miss Universe 2018

T

he Philippines’ Catriona Gray was named Miss Universe 2018 before a packed audience at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand, Monday morning.

Gray edged out first runner-up Tamaryn Green of South Africa and thirdplace Sthefany Gutierrez of Venezuela. She was crowned

by Miss Universe 2017

Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa. The 24-year-old FilipinoAustralian singer and model wore a sparkling red dress with its design inspired by the world famous Mayon Volcano in Albay province. Gray’s Filipina mother Normita hails from Albay, while her father Ian is Australian of Scottish descent. Gray was born and grew up in Cairns, Australia.

She studied at the Berklee College

of Music in Boston in the United States. She loves Filipino dishes, including adobo and balut. She is also an advocate of HIV/AIDS at Love Yourself Philippines, and volunteers as a teacher’s assistant to students of a non-government organization Young Focus. She is the fourth Miss Universe from the Philippines after Gloria Diaz (1969), Margie Moran (1973), and Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach (2015).

a kalakhang Maynila, sa malalaking lungsod at maging dito sa atin, partikular sa atin, pag malapit ng sumapit ang kapaskuhan mapapansin na natin ang maraming mga batang namamalimos sa kakarsadaan.

Kumakatok sa bintana ng mga sasakyan, sumasabit sa estribo ng mga jeepneys. Madalas tanggihan, di pinapansin, dinudusta at kapag minsan pinapagalitan pa, imbes na kaawaan..Sa ganitong sitwasyon ano ba ang magiging damdamin ng isang Kristiano?

Matagal ko ng nabasa itong kwentong ito, pero hindi na nawala sa aking gunita, na mabuti pa ipasa ko sa inyo ang kwento.

Nagsimula sa isang kwento sa isang marangyang piging, isang Christmas party ng isang malaking kumpanya sa bulwagan ng isang 5-star hotel. Masaya,may live band, magagarang damit ang suot ng lahat, mga signatures at higit sa lahat punong puno ang buffet long table ng sari-saring pagkain.Baked ham, turkey, lechon Cebu, baked salmon, Angus beef, mga sari saring pahimagas, mga sari-saring prutas galing pa sa Bangkok. Mga alak na imported.

Halos di man kalahati ang nakonsumong pagkain, dahil ang mga usapan sa kwentuhan ay tungkol sa kanilang pag-papayat at ehersisyo. Mga usapan tungkol sa kanilang pag-babakasyon sa ibang bansa, mga bagong biling condo unit at tubong malaki sa naging inilagak nila sa stock market.

Isa sa mga dumalo doon ay tawagan nating Elsa, isang ginang na may edad lampas singkwenta.

Isang matagumpay na negosyante.

Ang asawa ay isang malapit na kaibigan ng presidente, mga ilang senador at kongresista. Nakatira sila sa may Dasmarinas Village.

Miyembro sila ng Manila Golf Club at Manila Polo Club, mga exclusibong club para lang sa mga mayayaman.

Patapos na ang okasyon, tinawag ang drayber niya para sunduin doon sa harapan ng lobby ng otel. Sa loob ng kaniyang magarang series 7 na BMW isinandal ang tikal na katawan at di pa nakakalayo ang sasakyan huminto sa isang interseksyon dahil sa hinto ang trapic. At dito isang batang babae, mga edad sampung taon, kumatok sa bintana ng sasakyan. Minabuti ng drayber na buksan ang bintana at kumuha ng sampong pisong sensilyo sa lalagyan ng barya sa loob ng sasakyan na gamit sa pagbayad ng parking fee.

Namasdan ni Elsa yaon, at habang inaabot ang pera sa bata hinablot niya ang kamay ng drayber at hulog ang mga sensilyo sa kalsada, sabay sigaw na 'SABI KO NA SA IYONG HUWAG MAMALIMOS SA MGA YAN. MGA TAMAD ANG MAGULANG NIYAN KAYA GANIYAN. Nakayuko ang bata at hindi namalayan ang isang rumaragasang motorisiklo at sa isang iglap sapol siya. Walang hininga na ang bata ng mabagok ang ulo.

Namatay sa aksidente kapuwa ang magulang. Tanging lola niya ang kasamahan sa bahay. May sakit po kasi ang lola niya, kaya kahit gabi na napipilitan siyang mamalimos.

Kahapon nga po halos hapon na hindi pa sila nakakain, at naawa lang ang Mrs. ko at binigyan na lang namin doon sa aming natirang tinanghalian', sabi ng drayber.

Hayaan niyo papalitan ko na lang sa pera ko ang baryang nahulog sa karsada', dagdag ng drayber.

Perhaps two people close to you are having problems getting along. You feel like stepping in and telling them to calm down and really listen to each other. These are people need you the most.

You may have been a little difficult to be like to treat yourself to a little moodiness from time to time. But the people around you might appreciate a little cooperation.

There are doing want to grow up, when it’s time to play.

Do you get enough time to play? Think about it.

There may be tension in the air as you go about your day, Virgo. The leftover fatigue from the past few days is starting to wear on you. You may have managed to get into an argument with someone close to you, but there might be a reason for this. Take advantage of the situation to clear the air with your friend.

Scheifele named NHL Star of the Week Winnipeg Jets’ centreman, Mark Scheifele was named the NHL’s second star of the week. This accolade comes after he scored 4:18 into OT during their game against league-leading Tampa Bay Lightning 5-4 last Sunday.

The win was Winnipeg’s third straight overtime victory (22-9-2) and extended their win streak to five games. It also put them in a tie for second in the NHL with the Calgary Flames and tops in the Western Conference.

Scheifele had 11 points in four games last week and is currently on a five-game point streak. He finished the week with five goals and six assists. He joined Kyle Connor as the second player in franchise history to score overtime goals in consecutive games

Scheifele was named the first star in early December and second star of the week at the end of October. He is now fifth in the NHL in points with 46 and tied for fourth in goals with 21.

Paskong Pinoy celebrated with food and entertainment What comes into your mind when you think of Paskong Pinoy?

The Filipino celebration of "Paskong Pinoy" defines the wholesomeness of this very special occasion. Traditional food are served and the entertainment is full of gaiety among the family members and friends.

Here in Winnipeg, Paskong Pinoy was held recently with food being served to the guests and there was a full of entertainment

where the audience is fully engaged.

And to add more excitement to the event, some mascots had joined and entertained the crowd.

Angel Dong Tolentino, Jr., won the raffle contest winning a trip for 2 to the Philippines.

Organized and produced by Lourdes Federis and Mabuhay TV team, Paskong Pinoy definitely brought the best of the Christmas season in Winnipeg.
