Parenting a shy child Covid 19 has affected the social development of our children, and we perceive them to be shyer. Shy children are often assumed to have something wrong that needs to be fixed. However, shyness is simply a personality trait that is part of their temperament. Children are born with unique personalities, although the environment can play a significant role in how these traits present as the child develops. What is apparent is that shyness falls on a continuum, where children have varying levels of this trait. The important thing is to remember that different character attributes should be embraced to appreciate the unique way a shy child interacts with the world around them.

Children are wired with a variety of traits, and these things affect all areas of their life. Shyness is a trait

that most parents are concerned about because they feel their child doesn't have a good self-image.

However, many shy children have a strong self-concept. They are often deep-thinkers and great listeners but also very protective of their inner peace. Shy children with healthy confidence are polite, happy, and make eye contact. They are just simply quiet and slow to warm up to novel situations and people. And yes, more extreme shyness traits can cause concern, such as avoiding eye contact, behaviour problems, and excessive fear. This is when adults need to step in and help.

The key to nurturing a child's shy personality is avoiding labels and forcing the shyness out of them.

This will make them feel like they don't fit in and think that something is wrong. Instead, be patient and let

their personality develop naturally, encouraging them along the way. Appreciating the beautiful qualities of a shy child that is caring and sensitive will make them shine brighter. And when shyness is so extreme, that is genuinely a cause for concern. Exhibiting patience with children and helping them role-play positive social scenarios will be a much more positive approach than forcing them into uncomfortable situations unprepared.

Encouraging environments are vital to the individual development of a child's personality.

Adults must understand that children have different temperaments and traits. Given the best settings, they can develop to their best potential. Establishing a supportive environment where role-modelling positive social interactions help even the shyest of children develop their personalities with confidence.

Removing judgment and a "fix it" mentality when interacting with shy children will go a long way in reinforcing a positive self-image and helping confidence develop. Nurturing a child's innate traits will be a more successful approach than attempting to change them, which can have irreversible, long-term effects. Patience

and support will allow a shy child's inner peace to shine so that everyone around them can see it glow.

fter ruling the women's 55kg class in the Tokyo Games on July 26, 2021, Monday. Hidilyn Diaz became the Philippines' first-ever Filipina Olympic gold medalist, as the country had never won an Olympic gold since joining the Games in 1924.

And she will be the first Filipino to earn a gold Medal of Valor from the Philippine Sports Commission after ending the country's Olympic gold-medal drought. Winning an Olympic gold will merit a Medal of Valor on top of a monetary incentive of P10 million as per the Republic Act 10699 or the expanded incentives act.

Her prize bonanza breached the mark of up to P50-million, as rewards from private entities continue to pour in for Diaz even

He made it to the semifinal with a pair of first-round stoppages including a knockout over Arman Darchinyan in the quarterfinal, finding the undefeated Khyzhniak a tough nut to crack losing by split decision. Marcial’s bronze is the boxing team’s second medal in Tokyo after Nesthy Petecio’s silver finish. Carlo Paalam is still in contention for gold.

Manitoba Fully Open Starting August 7th

he province will implement new public health orders and guidance on Aug. 7, one month earlier than forecast, Premier Brian Pallister and Dr. Brent Roussin, Manitoba’s chief provincial public health officer, announced today.

“Thanks to the remarkable efforts of Manitobans, we are now in a position to reopen more, sooner, as we have achieved our highest vaccination rates yet,” said Pallister. “This means Manitobans will enjoy the least restrictive public health orders since the start of the pandemic last year.”

The new public health orders follow the 4-3-2 One Great Summer Path to Reopen. Manitoba is expected to reach the third vaccination milestone ahead of schedule; as of today 80 per cent of Manitobans age 12 and over have received their first dose and 75 per cent are expected to receive their second dose over the next week.

With continued improvement in the overall COVID-19 situation, the premier noted the interim orders only restrict the most highrisk transmission environments.

Public health recommendations and guidance, rather than restrictions, will play an increasingly significant role as the province prepares for a shift from pandemic to endemic COVID-19.

Specifically, the new public health orders will allow the following sectors to open without restrictions: • indoor and outdoor gatherings at private residences; • gyms and fitness centres; • libraries; • personal services such as hair and nail salons; • day camps; and • retail businesses, markets, garden centres and malls.

Other sectors will open with limited restrictions including: • expanded capacity limits will remain in place for weddings, funerals and other public gatherings both indoors and outdoors including larger capacity limits for worship and cultural events like pow wows; • restaurants and bars will no longer need to restrict the size or space between tables and dining will not be restricted to households or vaccinated individuals; however, patrons will still be expected to

avoid congregating or socializing between tables; • museums, galleries and movie theatres will remain limited to 50 per cent capacity but will no longer be restricted to vaccinated individuals; • casinos and bingo halls, professional sporting events, horse and auto racing, and concert halls will continue to be limited to vaccinated individuals; however, all these facilities may now open to 100 per cent capacity; • indoor and outdoor sports and recreation will fully reopen with limits only on spectator capacity; • overnight camps will be permitted with limits on camper cohorts; • workplaces must continue to report cases to government for followup and public health-confirmed transmission of COVID-19 in the workplace may result in workplaces being ordered to close for a minimum of 10 days; and • remote working will no longer be required or recommended by public health and workplaces will be encouraged to transition from COVID-19 safety plans to a general communicable disease prevention plan that focuses on basic risk-

reduction principles to reduce the risk of workplace transmission of COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses.

Due to the ongoing presence of COVID-19 in Manitoba and elsewhere, and the extra risk posed by the more contagious delta variant, provincial public health officials strongly recommend the following: • wearing masks in indoor public spaces for everyone who is not fully immunized including children under 12; and • maintaining physical distancing of two metres (six feet) in indoor settings.

“Unless you are fully immunized, you are still at risk for more severe effects of COVID-19, such as requiring hospital care or even death,” said Roussin. “We are slowly but surely approaching a post-pandemic Manitoba, but this does not mean COVID-19

will disappear. We need to remain cautious and vigilant in our efforts to stop the spread of this virus.”

The new public health orders will go into effect at 12:01 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 7.

The orders will expire at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7, and will be reassessed at that time in the context of vaccination rates and the province’s overall COVID-19 situation.

“We are very close to hitting that final milestone in our reopening path and reopening fully and completely,” said Pallister. “We need everyone on ‘Team Manitoba’ to for this final stretch. Get vaccinated – not once, but twice – and follow the public health orders and guidance designed to bend our COVID curve down, and keep it down.”

CHANGES TO PUBLIC HEALTH ORDERS The following changes come into effect on Saturday, Aug. 7 at 12:01 a.m.

Sectors Open Without Restrictions • indoor and outdoor gatherings at private residences • gyms and fitness centres • libraries • personal services, such as hair and nail salons • day camps • retail, markets, garden centres and malls Mask Use, Quarantine, Travel and Vaccine Status Self-isolation (quarantine) • Unvaccinated case contacts are required to complete a 14-day selfisolation.

• Fully vaccinated and asymptomatic people exempt from quarantine.

Domestic travel • Unvaccinated domestic travellers entering Manitoba must self-isolate for 14 days.

• Domestic travellers are exempt from self-isolation if they are fully vaccinated and asymptomatic.

Masks and Physical Distancing • Masks are strongly recommended in indoor public settings for everyone who is not fully immunized including children under 12.

• At all times, a physical distance of two metres is recommended in indoor public places.

Indoor gatherings and organized events, such as weddings, funerals, banquets, receptions and self-help groups • Capacity limited to 50 people or

50 per cent of capacity, whichever is greater.

• Dance floors will remain closed and activities that encourage close gathering and mingling are not recommended.

Indoor community, cultural and religious gatherings • 150 participants or 50 per cent capacity, whichever is greater.

Outdoor gatherings and organized events, such as weddings, funerals and receptions • Organized outdoor gatherings in public setting capacity limited to 1,500 people or 50 per cent of capacity, whichever is lesser.

• Dance floors will remain closed and activities that encourage close gathering and mingling are not recommended.

Outdoor community, cultural and religious gatherings • 1,500 people or 50 per cent of the capacity of a place, whichever is lesser.

• Drive-in services remain unrestricted.

Restaurants, licensed premises and food courts • There will be no group limits for indoor and outdoor dining, no capacity limits or separation requirements between tables and immunization cards will not be required to access services. However, guests must remain seated as much as possible and patrons should maintain twometre distance whenever they are away from their table.

Let’s get social

• Staff must ensure patrons do not congregate inside/ outside restaurants or licensed premises and there is to be no socializing between tables.

• Operating hours will no longer be restricted. Dance floors remain closed and sound levels must remain limited below 80-decibel levels.

Casinos and bingo halls • 100 per cent capacity for fully immunized people only. Unvaccinated children under 12 may attend (where appropriate) if accompanied by fully vaccinated household members.

Museums, galleries and movie theatres • 50 per cent of the capacity of the venue, regardless of vaccination status.

Professional sports or outdoor performing arts events • 100 per cent for fully immunized people, with a plan approved by public health.

• Unvaccinated children under 12 may attend if accompanied by fully vaccinated household members.

Large outdoor events • Larger events with more than 1,500 people who are fully immunized may be permitted with a plan approved by public health. Unvaccinated children under 12 may attend if accompanied by fully vaccinated household members.

Horse and auto racing • 100 per cent for fully immunized people, with a plan approved by

public health.

• Unvaccinated children under 12 may attend if accompanied by fully vaccinated household members.

Outdoor fairs/festivals/spectator events • 1,500 people or 50 per cent of the capacity of the venue.

• Larger-capacity events permitted with a plan approved by public health.

Concert halls • 100 per cent capacity for fully immunized individuals only.

Unvaccinated children under 12 may attend if accompanied by fully vaccinated household members Indoor sports and recreation (including dance, theatre and music schools) • All indoor group activities permitted with no capacity limits on participants.

This includes games, practices, competitions/ tournaments, day camps, rehearsals and recitals.

• Spectator capacity limits still apply – 50 per cent capacity. This includes other teams who are not active on the field of play (e.g.: at a tournament).

• Spectators should maintain a twometre distance whenever reasonably possible.

Outdoor sports and recreation • No capacity limits for participants.

Includes games, practices, competitions/ tournaments, day camps, rehearsals and recitals.

• Spectator capacity limited to 50 per cent of the capacity of a place.

Overnight camps Permitted with camper cohorts limited to 15 participants, no activities or co-mingling between cohorts and a plan approved by public health.

Workplaces • Workplaces must continue to report cases to government for followup. Workplaces with public health confirmed transmission of COVID-19 in the workplace may be ordered to close for a minimum of 10 days. Closure may be restricted to certain teams or areas in larger workplaces and exceptions will be provided for critical workplaces (e.g.: courthouses, police stations, fire halls, health-care facilities, schools, shelters, public transportation and distribution hubs for necessary goods – food, medicines, etc.)

• Remote work is no longer required/ recommended by public health and workplaces are encouraged to transition from COVID-19 safety plans to a general Communicable Disease Prevention Plan, focusing on basic risk reduction principles to reduce the risk of workplace transmission of COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses.

E

xploring the archives of '60s music continues to make me discover so many bands that I have never heard of before and whose music gives me so much delight. That the songs remain refreshing and engaging, after more than half a century, is amazing. It proves that even with music, age doesn't matter.

I get drawn to all the catchy melodies from the string or hornoriented instrumentation as well as playful vocal harmonies. These are the primary characteristics of what is known now as Sunshine Pop, which flourished in the late '60s.

Of the many bands whose full albums I have been immersing myself in for the past couple of months now, Harpers Bizarre is one of the standouts. The ornate and progressive quality of its songs is something that many contemporary bands will surely find difficult to emulate. Harpers Bizarre's music is definitely up there with that of the likes of The Beach Boys ("Wouldn't It Be Nice?"), The 5th Dimension ("Up, Up and Away"), and Spanky

& Our Gang ("Sunday Will Never Be the Same").

Formed in 1967, in Sta. Cruz, California, United States, Harpers Bizarre consisted primarily of Ted Templeman (vocals, drums, guitar) and Dick Scoppettone (vocals, guitar, bass). Long Weekends Are Never Long Enough

W

e all have our long weekend rituals and like many Manitobans, the long weekends in the summer are a perfect time to get outdoors and leave the city. Our August-long adventure this month was a trip to Clear Lake at Riding Mountain National Park. As pandemic lockdowns and gathering restrictions have eased in Manitoba, it was no surprise to see so many people in Wasagaming and next to no accommodations at campsites, hotels, and cottages.

Luckily, we were able to snap up a reservation at Elkhorn Resort & Conference Centre on a last-minute

cancellation and spend a couple of days relaxing and enjoying the outdoors. It was comfortable stay at Elkhorn and the kids enjoyed the indoor pool as they haven't been able to swim in Winnipeg for the last 15 months.

Everyone was itching to get outdoors and enjoy the opportunity to get back to normal and celebrate in large groups. Many Filipino families setup their picnic and buffet tables by the Clear Lake beach and marina. Many of the

activities were sold out including the marina tours, boating rentals, paddling and kayak rentals too.

So many activities to take in, while others simply relaxed on the beach, in the park and at the campgrounds. Not to forget Clear Lake Golf Course which is located within a 10min drive from Wasagaming.

Rolling Through Riding Mountain National Park

T

he annual bike ride through Riding Mountain National Park is a grueling 130kms from Clear Lake to Dauphin and back.

The group started their ride on Sunday morning starting in Wasagaming townsite and biked north on Highway 10 toward Dauphin. After a pit stop and break in Dauphin, it was time to head back to Clear Lake.

This is not your easy bike in the park ride. The rolling hills and steep inclines throughout the park is a challenge for the riders.

Finishing the 130km bike ride is a great accomplishment and one that was completed with friends and colleagues. The ride to and from Dauphin was completed in just over 5 hours.

The Padyaker's Winnipeg bike group consists of mature and senior athletes as the average age of members is 48 years old. The group members refuse to think of how old they are and have a positive attitude and intense passion for cycling. The Padyaker's group can be found on Facebook and on Strava.

"Money is a terrible master but an excellent servant."--Phineas Taylor Barnum, American showman Money may be defined as "a current medium of exchange in the form of coins and banknotes; coins and banknotes, collectively."

It is also the compensation or remuneration that people receive in exchange for the work or services that they have rendered; and which they spend to fulfill their every want and need, including the luxuries and basic necessities of life.

Business moguls run the world as if money is the most coveted factor in a person's life. Truthfully, it puts food on the table and buys the things that one desires, including stuff that are not really needed.

Money gives an illusion of power. For some, it could even buy "respect" [or, to be accurate, buy fear or command]--contrary to the old adage that respect should be earned; in this case, respect is being bought!

In fact, some people who have lots of it could even buy "friends."

In my more than four decades of life, I could never imagine a world without money or even one that disregards it. Materially, apart from having to realize simple pleasures, convenience, and enjoyment, it provides

the barometer of a person's content; whether one can be satisfied by either the lot or the lack of it.

We have been used to being surrounded by its concept and physical representations that to eke out a decent livelihood without money has become almost alien. Most of us came into this world by way of money.

We grow up, go to school, perform job(s), and leave this world-through money.

I came across this documentary of a person who goes by the name of Daniel Suelo. He has been living without money for 14 years. Before that time, he moved out from his apartment, took all his stuff that he could use and relocated to Moab, Utah--a remote, mountainous region.

He had chosen a cave as his dwelling place and a section of the forest (under a makeshift tent), which he occupies occasionally. Apparently, he finds food to eat and useable stuff in the dumpster. He rides his bicycle to the city every day and spends time at a public library to write and send

It is ostensible that Daniel still wanted the good amenities of life. But because he is homeless and unemployed, he found a commensurate way to squirm through his life to fulfill his basic needs and simple luxuries as free as they would come. His parents attest that their son has a brilliant mind, but he gave in to reclusiveness and depression because, according to him, he is an outcast of the community due to his homosexuality. This is a blatant manifestation of his eventual life decision. Momentous was that day when he gave up money, which he claims gave him a different kind of freedom.

I believe, a person is either being hypocritical or deranged if he claims that a life lived without money would give him freedom. What I think he is celebrating is actually only his freedom from bills, obligations, related responsibilities, and accounts management. Generally, it is only the work involved in maintaining a sound financial aspect of life that he wants to escape from. In reality, he is still homeless and has no power, capability, and the means to live a decent, sufficient, and respectable life--simply because he gave up not only the use of money but more so his sense of responsibility in earning it to sustain even a simple way of living.

Unless an alternative manner or process of receiving remuneration/ compensation is introduced lawfully by the government, we can never escape the concept of money.

Money as we know it, after all, is an integral part of a person's life. To say that it is evil is, after all, absurd and a clear display of hypocrisy.

Overall, it is indeed relative that a person should be in his right frame of mind to be able to understand and handle money and all its requirements.

The proper management thereof needs serious commitment and dedication to feed the cycle: creation and growth.

We do our best to make money and to let it serve us well. Its use should always be kept in check, to help us steer clear from unscrupulous activities that may lead to the abuse of it. After all, money in all its capabilities could either make or break one's future.

"We still have a long way to go in our fight against the proliferation of drugs," Duterte said in his nearly three-hour address. Duterte, who has dared the ICC to put him on trial, taunted the court again, saying he has never denied that he will kill people out to destroy the country.

"I have never denied, and the ICC can record it: those who destroy my country, I will kill you.

And those who destroy the young people of our country, I will kill you. I will really finish you, because I love my country." With those words, he challenged the ICC to prosecute him.

n March 14, 2018, President Rodrigo Duterte declared the Philippines was withdrawing its membership in the ICC (International Criminal Court), thinking that he wouldn’t be prosecuted for allegations that he was responsible for the killing of thousands of Filipinos during his presidency.

Prosecutor Fatou Bensoula of the ICC began the investigation early in February 2018 on the basis that murder, torture, and other crimes against humanity were present in the government’s anti-drug program during the first three years of the Duterte administration.

Last June 14, 2021, Bensouda announced that she had concluded her preliminary examination in the Philippines and is seeking authorization from the ICC’s judges for a full investigation into crimes against humanity committed in connection with the country’s “war on drugs” between November 1, 2011 March 16, 2019.

Statute said, “Even if it has deposited the instrument of withdrawal, it shall not be discharged from any criminal proceedings. Whatever process was already initiated before the [ICC] obliges the state party to cooperate.” As former ICC Judge Raul Pangalangan, the first Filipino to serve on the international tribunal said, “The withdrawal was not an excuse for Duterte to disregard the ICC’s authority.”

In support of the Supreme Court ruling, Amnesty International’s (AI) Philippines Researcher, Rachel Chhoa-Howard said, “Despite President Duterte’s stubborn refusal, Amnesty International welcomes the Supreme Court’s ruling that the Philippines remains obliged to cooperate with the ICC during formal probes into the deadly “war on drugs” – even if the state has withdrawn from the Rome Statute.”

“Try as they might, Duterte’s administration cannot stop the wheels of justice. Whether they like it or not, international justice will eventually catch up with those who have committed crimes under international law in the Philippines,” Chhoa-Howard said.

Refusal to cooperate However, Duterte refused to cooperate with any ICC probe since the Hague-based tribunal supposedly has no jurisdiction over him since its founding treaty, the Rome Statute, supposedly never became a law in the country. Wrong. The Philippines signed the Rome Statute on December 28, 2000 and ratified it on August 30, 2011; thus, making

it an extension of Philippine law.

But 10 years later, on July 29, 2021, Duterte claimed that the signing of the Rome Statute was never been published in the Official Gazette and was, therefore, never binding in the first place. “The executive department has no copy,” he said.

“Best Rated” vegetable soup in the world, Philippine Sinigang

Taste Atlas an online "world atlas" serving as an "encyclopedia" of food and flavors around the globe with a database containing over 10,000 global dishes and ingredients, has declared the Philippines' Sinigang, the world's best-rated vegetable soup besting 161 other dishes from different countries.

They describe Sinigang as a sour soup "consisting of sampalok (fruits of the tamarind tree), water

spinach, green pepper, cabbage, broccoli, eggplant, diced tomatoes, sliced onions, ginger, green beans, water, oil, and salt."

The website shared a list showing Sinigang as the top vegetable soup with a rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars closely followed by Skābeņu Zupa from Latvia, Ogbono soup from Edo in Nigeria, Kürbis Suppe from Burgenland in Austria, and Fagiolata from Italy - all rated 4.7 stars.

“Not a scam”: Nas Academy shows proof of legit Whang Od course agreement

digital learning platform, Nas Academy headed by best known Nas Daily, has broken its silence on the controversy surrounding its paid online course under Apo Whang-Od’s name, which was earlier called by a relative of the tattoo legend a “scam”.

Following claims by Whang Od’s relative and protege Gracia Palicas that her grandmother did not sign any contract with Nas Daily for a masterclass priced at P750. Nas Academy released a statement to “set the record straight” in a Facebook post on Thursday, August 5, 2021.

They approached Whang-Od, the oldest-living tattoo artist in the Philippines, for the said course because “We wanted to share her culture for future generations to appreciate and respect the ancient Kalinga tradition of mambabatok. So we pitched to her family the idea of creating Whang-Od Academy. She

and her family present both loved this idea, and have worked WITH US to build it, with Whang-Od teaching herself,” Nas Academy said.

Attached with the statement is a 22-second clip of Whang-Od doing the fingerprint signature, being accompanied by a relative and a supposed translator. “This is the clearest evidence that it is not a scam and achieved the consent of her and her immediate family,” it

VANCOUVER, One of the Top Ten Most Beautiful Cities in the World (part 5)

A

world-class city attached to the ocean, Vancouver has so many points of interest scattered throughout the city. After a day of sight-seeing at Prospect Point, Robson Street, and Chinatown, it’s time to relax at the tranquil Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Chinese Classical Garden , the first classical Chinese garden in all of Canada and once named as the world’s top city garden by National Geographic. It must be remembered that Sun Yat-Sen, a Chinese statesman and physician, was the provisional first president of the Republic of China. He’s noted for his chief legacy, i.e., his political philosophy, the “Three Principles of the People” - Minza or nationalism, Minquan or rights of the people (democracy) and Minsheng or people’s livelihood (communitarianism).

Right in the heart of Vancouver’s Chinatown, the garden that was constructed using 14th century methods - no glue, no screws or no power tools were used - features a jade green pond, “koi” fish, a collection of 150-year old miniature trees and “tai hu” rock imported from China.

The garden is a good place to see

anytime of the year.

A must-see is the Vancouver’s most popular attraction, Grouse Mountain. It is the only truly fourseason destination in the city where you can enjoy a full-day mountain experience of downhill skiing and other snow sports during winter, and outdoor summer activities like mountain biking, paragliding, ecowalks, zip lining, scenic chairlift ride, even helicopter tours. In the summer other features include lumberjack show and the “Bird in Motion” birds of prey demonstration. Grouse Mountain get’s its name from sooty blue grouse, a game bird in the area.

We begin our Grouse Mountain experience by taking the iconic Red Skyride aerial tramway from the valley station to the mountain summit, rising 1,250 meters (4,100 feet) above Vancouver, so fast in just eight (8) minutes. The ride gives us the opportunity to admire the jaw-dropping cityscape and the views of the neighbouring mountain peaks, the Pacific Ocean, inlets and bays, and the Gulf Islands. Currently closed due to Covid-19 pandemic is the Grouse Mountain’s “Theater In The Sky”, the high-definition electronic cinema showing a number of wildlife-related movies particularly the Grouse’s resident grizzly bears.

Grouse Mountain where the world’s first double chairlift was built in 1949 offers alpine skiing (day and night) and snowboarding during winter months. Hit the slopes of varied 33 green and black trails/runs for all levels of downhill skiers serviced by four chairlifts.

While at the summit satisfy your taste buds with feast on variable delicious dishes at Grouse’s The Observatory, or at Grouse Grind Coffee Bar. For more beautiful British Columbia adventures take the ferry over to Vancouver Island. See you next at the capital, Victoria!

The Padyakers Winnipeg biking club took to the hills of Riding Mountain National Park with a 5 hour, 130km bike trip from Wasagaming to Dauphin and back. The breathtaking bike ride - both in scenery and hill climbs made for a great day of riding. The group made it to Northgate Trails in Dauphin, Manitoba.
