PCCM Unveils the Philippine Vickar Jeepney

F

The Vickar Jeepney which was unveiled last July 31 at the PCCM grounds has become the center of attraction. It was brought here by the couple Larry and Tova Vickar who fell in love with it when they “To have this piece of Philippine history known as the “King of the Road” in Winnipeg, is our commitment to the Filipino community here. We are aware that this cultural icon is a living symbol of the Filipino’s ingenuity and creativity. This jeepney has become a part of the cultural heritage of the Filipinos in Winnipeg. It took us at least two years to restore it to its original design in spite of the many changes made for this jeepney. I do hope that the Filipinos here in Winnipeg will use this jeepney for many years to come. We are honored to be a part of this cultural event and

Undersecretary Dante Velasco of the Department of Transportation and Communications said that they have already gotten in touch with the pilots in active duty and even

those who have already retired, to get their views on the current problem of the carrier’s pilots.

Noynoy fires all GMA midnight appointees

P

resident Aquino ordered Wednesday (Aug 4) the revocation of the midnight appointments of the previous Arroyo administration.

The President’s directive was contained in Executive Order 2 “recalling, withdrawing, and revoking appointments issued by the previous administration in violation of the constitutional ban on midnight appointments.”

The EO, signed on July 30, stipulates conditions that constitute former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s midnight appointments in “departments, agencies, offices, and instrumentalities including government-owned or controlled

The constitutional ban on appointments took effect 45 days before the May 10 general elections.

There are at least five parliamentary conferences that are open to lawmakers and officials of the House secretariat every year.

In addition to these, there is the annual meeting of the International Labor Organization (ILO) in Geneva, Switzerland, a favorite destination of senators and congressmen.

The ILO conference takes place in June or July, when Congress is usually on recess.

There are also the meetings of the United Nations in New York, another favorite sightseeing and vacation destination. In the past, foreign travels are a big drain on House resources.

Many congressmen had three to five trips a year, in addition to invitations to join presidential visits. Delegations were also large.

Paano, sa ilang taóng ipinunta ko sa Folklorama ng Filipino e halos pare-parehong pagmumukha at programa ang napapanood ko. Bakit wala na bang ibang mag-volunteer para magpalabas naman ng bago?

Tapos palaging makaluma na lang ang ipinapakita—panay tinikling at tradisyonal na sayaw, at kung meron mang kantahan e parating karaoke at gaya-gaya lang naman ng kanta at istilo ng kung sino’ng sikat na mang-aawit ang nasa uso ngayon. Bakit, wala bang Filipino artist na taga-Winnipeg na kayang mag-compose ng sariling musika at awitin? Pagkakaalam ko e marami naman ditong mga banda at indibiduwal na kompositor na nagsusulat ng sariling kanta. O baka naman ayaw lang silang

bigyan ng pagkakataon ng mga namamahala? At baka naman mino-monopolize lang ng piling grupo ang pagpapatakbo ng Filipino Folklorama? Aba, panahon na para paabantehin ang kultura ng Filipino sa Winnipeg!

H’wag sanang kalimutan na ang kultura ay binubuo hindi lamang ng makaluma at tradisyonal kundi pati rin ng makabago at kontemporaryo. Hindi siguro alam ng mga nakatatandang namamahala sa Folklorama na napakarami na ng populasyon ng kabataang Filipino rito, kaya panahon na para bigyang-pansin ang kanilang mga interes. Yan ang karaniwang hirap sa mga nasa posisyon—para ding sa gobyerno—masyado silang makasarili; ang iniisip lang nila ay ang kanilang kasiyahan at kapakanan. Para silang mga kabayong pangarera na may piring ang mga mata—nakatutok lang ang paningin sa isang direksyon— hindi tuloy nila makita ang ibang anggulo.

“Pustahan tayo, yung mga panindang pagkain e ’yun na naman. Sabi tuloy nung ilang

katrabaho kong ibang lahi, ‘Iyan lang ba ang pagkaing Filipino?’

“Sabagay, maganda nga yang positive thinking mo,” ani Tito George, “pero ipupusta ko ang plane ticket kong pabalik ng Toronto—panay pang-matatanda na naman ang mga ipalalabas sa Folklorama! Pustahan, kung sino ang nagpalabas noong isang taon e sila na naman ang makikita natin.

Kung ano ang ipinalabas nila noon e ganoon uli ngayon. Kung may kakanta man e siguradong ang kakantahin e kanta ng iba.”

Lanao prosecutor gunned down

T

he provincial prosecutor of Lanao del Norte was gunned down while jogging near his house in Iligan City early Wednesday (Aug 4) morning, police said.

Iligan City police director Senior Superintendent Bernardo Reamon said Provincial Prosecutor Macadatar Marsangaca was jogging with an unidentified relative at the Pryce Properties in Barangay Tubod at about 6:45 a.m. when two gunmen came from behind on a motorcycle and shot him on the back of the head at close range with a .45 caliber pistol.

The suspects who were not wearing helmets immediately fled, according to police.

Reamon said police have been patrolling the area, a favorite spot for joggers, from 4 to 7 a.m. because of several killings committed there.

However, on the morning of Marsangaca’s murder the patrolling policemen had already returned to their headquarters, he added.

Police are investigating whether the killing of Marsangaca was workrelated, including the possibility of a “rido” or clan conflict.

ll my friends know where the Thai, Chinese and Indian restaurants are in Winnipeg. However, when it comes to where the Filipino restaurants are, they always turn to me to ask where they can order lumpia or try one of the famous Filipino breakfasts. I usually tell them to Google “Filipino food” but I worry that they just might end up spelling it wrong.

Now where does the latest social media website FourSquare.com come into the play? FourSquare.com is a GPS location-based social networking that allows communities to

share locations through GPS, mobile email and text. With the proliferation of smartphones, getting online is alot easier.

Friends can share their locations by “checking-in”, earning points and by checking in a certain number of times, or in different locations, you can earn badges, or earn mayorships.

For the Filipino restaurant owners, there are several business benefits. Firstly, it’s FREE marketing! The majority of FourSquare venues are restaurants and bars. When someone checks in, friends will be able to see on Twitter or Facebook that they’ve

stopped into a Filipino restaurant and that the longsilog they just ordered is sounding like a really good idea. The simple, yet powerful word of mouth, online promotion is extremely important to many of the Filipino mom & pop stores and restaurants.

From a customer point of view, FourSquare offers the potential for business owners to provide in-store or special FourSquare discounts when they check-in. Provided that you’ve checked-in to a specific venue a certain number of times, you become the “mayor” of that venue. Business owners can offer free food, discounts on products or services to “mayors” and increase sales through repeat business and healthy competition for mayorships.

By sharing the Filipino restaurants on FourSquare, they also get published on my Twitter and Facebook newsfeeds and thereby, educating my dear friends where all the Filipino restaurants, bakeries and karaoke bars are in

Winnipeg. During Folklorama, we added both Philippine pavilions on FourSquare and another great way to spread Philippine culture, heritage and cuisine with our friends in our social media networks.

Internet overuse among teens, a growing problem

A

ccording to an article from the Depression Health Centre, teenagers who are too dependent on the internet are more likely to develop depression or other psychiatric problems than teens who are considered as normal internet users.

This is the result of the study done by researchers in Australia and China which followed the internet use of more than a

thousand teenagers aged 13 to 18 in China. All of them were free of depression and anxiety at the start of the study. Nine months later, as they were evaluated, 87 were judged as having developed depression.

Eight reported significant anxiety symptoms.

Teens who get addicted to the internet often spend 5 to more than 10 hours a day in front of the computer screen, typing or

gaming away until the wee hours of the morning. They get angry or agitated if not in front of the computer and will increasingly shun social interactions.

According to the Centre for Online Addiction, “internet addiction is a type of a compulsive disorder that affects a person’s daily life.” Symptoms Include: • Failed attempts to control behavior • Heightened sense of euphoria while involved in computer and Internet activities • Neglecting friends and family • Neglecting sleep to stay online • Being dishonest with others • Feeling guilty, ashamed, anxious, or depressed as a result of online behavior • Physical changes such as weight gain or loss, backaches, headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome • Withdrawing from other pleasurable activities Health experts suggest that schools screen students for internet dependence so they can help our young people get counseling and treatment. At home, parents can help, too by monitoring their children’s activities and talking to them about the dangers of too much internet, and encourage them to be more sociable and interact with other people.

“Tinig ng Pilipinas”

fter much deliberation and organization, UMSigaw’s “Tinig ng Pilipinas” Bursary has now been posted up on the group’s website, http://umsigaw.org/. Hoping to find the “Voice of the Philippines” in a Canadian Winnipeg, the purpose of this bursary is to assist first year and second year students of Filipino background, whether they are newcomers or second generation Filipinos. It is to promote post-secondary education; with an increase in tuition fees, it is especially difficult for newcomers to pay for further education, as they have not had the time to build up funds or an extracurricular/volunteer resume

that is usually integral in college and university applications.

For the “Tinig ng Pilipinas” Bursary, only one extracurricular is required, along with a letter of recommendation that will be shown to the selection committee during the interview.

The extended deadline for application forms and transcripts is Monday, August 16th. Interviews have been pushed back to Wednesday, August 25th, while the date of the awarding of the bursary at the UMSigaw picnic on August 28th remains unchanged. ongregation members, their families and guests of the El Shaddai of St. Patrick’s Church Fellowship at 172 Worth Street take time out of

their busy schedule for their annual picnic at the Assiniboine Park on July 31, 2010. Everybody enjoys the delicious food shared by each members while other members

and guests take turn in the karaoke singing throughout the event.

Kids and adults join in playing parlour games which adds more joy to the activities. Following

the different fun activities was the burning of the prayer requests gathered for the previous months.

Brother Villota was invited by RW Bro Uson before he left to attend the next year’s Grand Lodge of Manitoba’s Annual Communication to be held on June 2011.

“I was very nervous and very excited at the same time.”

This was how 13-year old Winnipegger Mimoza Moureen Duot described her feelings while auditioning for YTV’s The Next Star in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Winnipeg was not included in the audition stop this year, so Mimoza begged her parents to drive all the way to Saskatoon so she can audition.

Her parents were reluctant at first and asked her to wait a few more years, but Mimoza felt this was the right time.

“I felt that I was ready and I’ve been waiting for this chance, so here I am!” And her perserverance paid off. Mimoza was among the top 16 contestants out of the 4,000 hopefuls from different parts of the country to get a shot at being The Next Star.

Mimoza is a familiar face to many, as she and her brother often volunteer their time and talent to different community events such as the Asian Heritage Festival, as well various community fundraisers.

Currently, Mimoza and her mom Mimi and brother Moises himself included in the Top 12 of the same competition two years ago -- are in Toronto, while Mimoza competes and hopes to be in the Top 6 which will be announced on August 10.

The six finalists to be chosen will be mentored throughout the remaining YTV episodes. They will be challenged in every aspect of the biz from vocal exercises to participating in media interviews to perfecting a signature look. The six finalists will also record an original song that will be released on a compilation album.

Only one of the six will become The Next Star and receive the grand prize package at the series’ finale on Sunday, September 26, live from Canada’s Wonderland. Viewers will have to vote for their favorite via YTV.com or by texting. Grand prize includes: Kool-Aid Jammers Ultimate Jam Space featuring an Apple Macbook and Pro Tools recording software, a distribution deal with Universal Music Canada, and a Songwriter Deluxe Acoustic Guitar courtesy of Gibson Guitar.

Celebrity Judges for the show are: Suzie McNeil, Christoper Ward and Steve Cranwell.

Gerald: “I’ll be there for Kim ‘for life’

A

mid intense breakup rumors and rumors that their loveteam will be going their separate ways, Gerald Anderson said he would always be there for his ka-loveteam Kim Chiu “for life”.

For several weeks now, rumors have been making the rounds that all is not well with the young pair, who were seen recently in Kung Tayo’y Magkakalayo on The Filipino Channel (TFC). Now that the show has ended, the rumors that there will be a parting of ways between Kim and Gerald has intensified, making their fans—called the Kimeralds— anxious.

A number of them have sent e-mail appeals and letters to ABSCBN management, saying that they

would prefer that Kim and Gerald continue to be paired together.

So far, in the five years that Kim and Gerald have been in showbiz, both of them have had the opportunity to work with other actors. Last year, Gerald starred in Agimat opposite Erich Gonzales.

Kim also did an episode of Maalaala Mo Kaya opposite Matt Evans.

According to the young actor, there are plans for new projects for both of them, but they have not yet been told what these projects are and if they will star Kim and Gerald together, or separately.

“Confidential pa what those projects are, pero excited na kami pareho ni Kim,” says Gerald. “Kung magkasama kami, eh di okay. Kung hindi, we have to prepare [for that]

Filipina singer performs for the royal family

ilipina singer Iya Villania was recently invited to perform at the birthday celebration of Her Royal Highness Princess Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah, the eldest daughter of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah.

The exclusive barbecue dinner party was attended by the Crown Prince HRH Al-Muhtadee Billah, the successor to the Sultan, and his wife HRH Princess Sarah.

Also present were the celebrant’s husband HRH Yang Amat Mulia, and her brother HRH Prince Malik.

While in Brunei, the singer had the chance to visit the Empire

Hotel, the famous Water Village, and some of the malls and mosques, with the members and friends of the Royal Family.

The remarkable experience became more memorable for the Filipina singer when the Princess:

As for the rumors that the two of them have broken up—which came amid other rumors that Gerald was seeing ex-Pinoy Big Brother Double Up housemate Sam Pinto— he neither confirmed nor denied anything.

The last time he and Sam were together was the taping of their Your Song Presents “Isla” episode. The last time he saw and talked to her was the Bench Uncut show at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Philippines on July 2.

James Yap makes up lost time with Bimbi

he star player of B-Meg Derby Ace is trying to spend more time with his 3-year-old son Baby James by estranged wife Kris Aquino whom he didn’t see for 3 weeks.

The kid is back in Manila

from a vacation in the United States with her mom and step bother Joshua, Aquino’s son from a previous relationship.

James yap was seen bonding with son Baby James after his basketball game last Friday. When

asked if he would still fight to save their marriage despite Aquino’s pronouncement that reconciliation was already impossible, Yap just said it is for him to decide.

The cager has chosen not to be drawn into a television-talk match with Aquino following her interview on “The Buzz” on Sunday where she declared that their marriage couldn’t be save anymore.

Although Yap has been accused by Aquino of infidelity, she said she has forgiven him because of their son. She reiterated however that her feeling toward him is gone and it would be best for both of them to go on separate ways.

Lee Min Ho said “Perfect Match´ is about a straight guy pretending to be gay and how he finds the love of his life.

The Korean actor who is well known in the Philippines expressed his ardent desire to meet his Filipino fans. He admitted though that he can’t visit Manila at the moment due to his hectic schedule.

He invited his Filipino fans to watch his new show by saying “Hello Kapamilya, I’m back!

VP Binay hands off on son’s romantic affair

Lilies, Lilies, Lots of Lilies!

E

very year the town of Neepawa, Manitoba prepares for one of Manitoba’s most beautiful festivals - The Lily Festival.

Now on its 14th year, the three-day festival (July 23, 24 & 25) featured a colourful parade, various demonstrations on reverse glass painting, copper tooling, balloon sculpture and art, origami display, lilies workshop and many others. For the nature lovers, Neepawa offers campgrounds, golf and picnic areas. You can also find the original home of famous author Margaret Laurence that has been well-preserved and is now one of the town’s tourist attractions.

But the major attraction were undoubtedly the lilies themselves, in all colours, sizes and shades.

You could get a fill of these beautiful flowers at Lily Nook, which boasts of hundreds of different varieties. Tourists from all over flock to Lily Nook to bask in the flowers’ grandeur and bring home a plant or two.

Filipino Journal staff and volunteers couldn’t hide their joy for the beautiful lilies at Lily Nook.

Our Home in Paradise “Mom, can we live here?” my 8 year old daughter Sabrina asked as I tucked her into bed on our first night at Dive Link Island Resort. I smiled, hugged and gave her a kiss. That remark filled my heart with so much joy. I saw happiness in her eyes. She wanted to stay awake and talk about the many things she did and saw that day.

The beauty of Coron, the friendliness of the staff, the peaceful, quiet but exciting and safe surroundings of Dive Link made it feel like it was our home in paradise. The place is simple.

It was just right for my family to appreciate God’s wondrous creations in the Philippines.

We stayed in a Family Garden Cottage that had 2 adjoining rooms with a shared toilet and bath. We had air conditioning, clean fresh water and hot /cold showers. We had our meals in the Coconut Grove Restaurant. It served our favorite seafood dishes: Garlic Crabs and Grilled Prawns!

We were glad there was no TV in the rooms as this made us appreciate our surroundings more and the children

go out to have more adventure. They already have too much TV in the city.

The children loved walking along the pier and seeing and feeding the fishes beneath. We were thrilled to go up the challenging Uson summit and see the fantastic view of Coron and come back down to just soak up and have more fun at the swimming pool, while my husband and I just lazily lay around the pool reading! That afternoon, we even taught them how to kayak along the bay in front of the resort.

Dive Link even has a karaoke lounge and a family room with board games. They offer other activities to enrich your Palawan experience.

These include snorkeling in marine parks, kayaking and swimming in the Twin Lagoons, Kayangan lake, having a picnic in white beaches of some nearby islands and scuba diving.

Goldeyes celebrate Filipino Night at Canwest Ballpark

T

he Winnipeg Goldeyes hosted Filipino Night at Canwest Ballpark on July 10 to highlight the Filipino culture and community as they played the Joliet Jack Hammers on a cool and cloudy summer evening.

Goldeye fans were treated to wonderful voice of Beverley Wynne as she sang the Canadian national anthem.

Live cultural entertainment took place on the baseball diamond with the Kayumanggi Performing Arts as they performed the traditional tinikling. While the fans in the grandstand were treated to fine Filipno cusine provided

Nazario was also on hand selling Filipino themed t-shirts and cultural souvenirs.

Coincidentaly, in an unrelated event at Hu’s Asian Bistro ballpark patio was the Joaquin Anniversary

Party. Congratulations to the Joaquin family!

In the end, the Goldeyes couldn’t close out a win an exciting ninth inning and lost 4-3 to the Joliet Jackhammers.

Around the World in Fourteen Days 2010 Filipino Journal Folklorama Ambassador Myra Ibabao-Valmonte

F

irst of all, I would like to thank the Filipino Journal for giving me the opportunity to represent them as their Folklorama Ambassador. An all-access pass with a guest makes Folklorama even much more enjoyable. Below, I have included my first impressions of each pavilion I was able to attend so far, and I tried to capture some memorable moments in pictures. So far, I am having a great time ‘around the world’.

DAY 1 BRAZIL PAVILION – Athletic dancers! We were first greeted by the friendly, hospitable staff who served us a delicious meal consisting of a pork and black bean stew, broccoli and bean salad, a cheese bun and a crab cake. I washed everything down with their refreshing alcoholic drink called Capirinha. The great meal was paired with high-energy entertainment. The live music,dancing, and martial arts (Capoeira) showed off all the dancers’ skills really well. Viva Brazil!

CUBA VA! “TROPICANA” PAVILION – The temperature in the pavilion reflected a hot Havana night.

Although it was warm, our attention was glued to the sizzling dancing on stage. The beautiful ladies and men really knew how to move their hips, dancing to Salsa and Meringue beats.

The music and performance made me just want to get up and dance.

PHILIPPINE PAVILION NAYONG PILIPINO – Talented young performers! The show started off with a great musical performance by my buddy, Matthew, and his friends, Neil and Saad. Dances from the Cordillera regions of the Philippines were then brought to life on stage. I was impressed with how young some of the dancers were, staying in character throughout the whole dance. The show then ended in the lively, colourful rural dances.

I always look forward to watching Tinikling, waiting to see how fast and coordinated the dancers are, and if any ankles get caught in the clapping bamboo poles (of course hoping they don’t). The dancers did not disappoint.

Great job! Also, we got a chance to get our names written in Baybayin script.. so uniquely Filipino:) DAY 2 UKRAINE-KYIV PAVILION – Great venue set-up! We were welcomed with warm smiles as we entered the pavilion. The staff did an excellent job with the religious and cultural display, market place, children’s activities, and of course – the food. I couldn’t leave without trying the mini sampler, which consists of a perogie and sour cream, sausage (kovbasa), cabbage roll, pickle, and rye bread – delicious!

As for the entertainment, we enjoyed listening to the live Ukrainian music and watching young dancers test their

endurance with all the endless spins and various dance moves that always delight crowds.

MEXICAN PAVILION – Beautiful, colourful costumes! It was a nice surprise when we were first personally greeted by the friendly adult ambassador, Sergio. I was then captivated by the performances of the well-trained dancers. The amazing, intricate costumes complimented the dances. The ladies really knew how to work their full skirts, and the men partnered them well. Their performance was a mesmerizing display of colours, sights, and sounds. It was my first time at this pavilion and now it’s one of my favourite shows this year. Bravo! My night ended off with a taste of their traditional taco. Viva Mexico!

DAY 3 AFRICA/CARIBBEAN PAVILION – High-energy, booming beats! I first noticed the warm hospitable staff.

The youth ambassador, Michael, even escorted us to our seats. The staff served us sweet rum punch and pina coladas which hit the spot. I enjoyed listening to the music, especially the steel drums, which made me just want to jump along with the dancers. The dancers displayed so much energy constantly grooving and jumping to the beats of the drums. Finally, Prince Jo-Jo, the limbo dancer and fire-eater , displayed his amazing skills. He is always a crowd-pleaser. Oh yeh, since I love rotis, I got a mouth- watering beef roti to-go and got my fix.

The Davao Association of Manitoba picnic was held at Assinibloine Park on Saturday, 31 July 2010. It started with Roman Catholic Mass at 10:30 am officiated by Fr. Dindo Pepito. Here They Come, Scream Your Lungs Out

(On the so-called Screaming-Fan Phenomenon)

I

hear and read a lot of derogatory remarks about fans who scream their lungs out every time they see their music idols—be such sighting is in person or on TV. Hate mails and postings for particular artists and other showbusiness personalities also abound on the Internet, and their respective fans are always ready to defend them.

My empathy goes out to the fans simply because I, too, am a fanatic music enthusiast. I have many music icons whose works I so love and admire and for whom I had screamed my lungs out when I saw them at concerts and to whose songs I sometimes sing along teary-eyed even though I am just listening to these solitarily on my media player.

These are the mark of a true music enthusiast, and there is nothing wrong about it.

I think those people who berate this whole screaming-fan phenomenon do so simply because they themselves are not a big fan of any music genre or artist—the reason they could not understand that the screaming is just an expression of excitement, just a proof of how music and influential artists and other celebrities can move people emotionally. But of course, there should be a limit to this expression of excitement. This so-called screaming-

fan phenomenon should be socially acceptable as long as the screaming fan doesn’t do anything that may pose harm or serious inconveniences to the celebrity of her affection or to her fellow fans—like stalking, instigating violence, stealing memorabilia, or engaging in public obscenities.

Nevertheless, when a fan is at a

supporter, or enthusiast, is a person with an intense, occasionally overwhelming liking and enthusiasm for something or someone relatively popular. A fan often shows her or his enthusiasm by starting or joining a fan club, creating fanzines, collecting memorabilia, or simply watching the performances of the personalities of her affection.

Nowadays, a lot of teenagers scream their lungs out when they see the likes of Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Marianas Trench, Lights, Drake, and Charice Pempengco.

Many people tend to laugh at these screaming kids. I don’t, because I scream too on occasions I get the chance to watch my favorite bands live in concerts. I’m sure that those people who criticize fans like us have forgotten that they might have also

Elder Abuse

A

bout a month ago, I received an e-mail invitation from Jean Guiang, a former Executive Director of Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba, to attend the August 21 forum on the Innovative Cultural Approaches in the Prevention of Elder Abuse (ICAPEA) organized by the Knights of Rizal (KoR) and the Manitoba Association of Filipino Teachers Inc. (MAFTI). I accepted immediately, giving a 90% chance that I can drive to Winnipeg from Regina, six to seven hours on the road.

A few days later, I was wondering whether I was invited because I am an elderly Filipino Canadian (78 years old) who might be a victim of elder abuse or that I might be able to add some insights into the topic. After all, I have lived for over four decades in Canada and the first essay in my book Like the Mimosa is titled “Elder Care, Elder Neglect,” which was my column here in September, 1993.

I concluded that essay with some pointed questions, namely, 1) When we get Lola or Lolo to babysit or keep house, do we pay her or him at least what we pay others?; 2) Do we involve our parents in our joys, our problems, and our discussions in general? (They may not be up to scratch on the fast-paced Canadian way of life but their advice on family

“Dapit-Hapon Sa Canada”, the short play written by Rod Escobar Cantiveros and commissioned by the Knights of Rizal and MAFTI, will be presented on August 21 during the ICAPEA conference to be held at PCCM. “The Elder Abuse program has been funded by the Federal Government amounting to $100,000.

So what is Sudoku? Pronounced [su:doku], Sudoku is the Japanese abbreviation of “the digits remain single”. In Japan Sudoku is sometimes referred to as “Number Place” and can be spelt “Su Doku”. and human affairs may be useful); 3) On holidays, do we take them with us and are we also concerned with their needs?; 4) Do we take them for regular checkups?; in short, 5) Do we care for them as they cared for us when we were young?

Elders are at risk of abuse for many reasons. There is the deterioration of their hearing and eyesight; there is the slowing down of their movements due to pains, aches, and illnesses; and there is their social isolation and even impending dementia. When a person does not get what you said the first time, it is so easy and natural for you to raise your voice which is just a step into screaming and scolding: Ang tigas ng ulo n’yo, Nanay; sinabe ko na nga!

Any act that undermines a person’s self-worth or dignity is a form of abuse, not physical but certainly emotional or psychological.

This manifests itself in bullying, threats of violence, name-calling, infringement of privacy, intimidation, and even treatment as a child or lowclass citizen by exclusion or isolation.

With treatment of this nature, the elder clams up and tends to withdraw from family and friends, suffers bouts of distress and hopelessness, and may even entertain thoughts of selfdestruction.

Another form of elder abuse is

economic or financial abuse, which may be just as damaging. Sometimes an elder may depend on a relative or a friend or a caregiver to help with his or her day-to-day business, such as paying rent, buying groceries and home needs, or managing bank accounts and so forth. In these situations, it is so tempting and convenient for the “helper” to gain financially at the expense of the elder with or without the elder’s consent.

This is especially likely when Nanay or Tatay lives alone in an apartment or a care home. Besides the immediate close by abuser, the elder is also vulnerable and susceptible to frauds and scams. If you have a parent in this situation, be sure to check her finances regularly – for unusual withdrawal of funds, for shortage in payments or bouncing of checks, and for consistency in her receipt of pensions and old-age supplements.

There are two other concerns that do not fall under abuse but under elder care—one has to do with spirituality and the other with mental and physical health.

Many Filipinos are religious— whether Catholic, Protestant, or whatever. It is important for them to renew their faiths regularly whether in weekly or daily masses or in religious services. Research has shown that people who practice their beliefs, who pray to God or a Higher Being tend to have lower blood pressure, lower levels of anxiety, and fewer strokes.

This is due to an inner peace and a sense of being good. (Since 1988, I’ve been transporting Filipino seniors in Regina to masses and novenas, and I have seen how mentally alert they are.)

Hunted and Haunted

ith the signing of Executive Order No.1 creating the Philippine Truth Commission of 2010, President Benigno “P-Noy” Aquino III set in motion the hunt for corrupt officials during the past nine years and bring to justice those who committed graft and corruption.

In P-Noy’s first State of the Nation Address (SONA) last July 26, he set the tone for the battle

that lies ahead which would pit his government against former president and congresswomen Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and those involved in plundering the country.

P-Noy detailed several anomalies that occurred in the waning days of Gloria’s nine and a half years which includes depleting 70% of the P1.541 trillion 2010 budget, leaving his administration with only around one percent for each month for the

remainder of 2010.

Evidently, P-Noy’s SONA was an “indictment” of Gloria for the plunder that began within days of her ascension to the presidency on January 20, 2001, when then president Joseph “Erap” Estrada was deposed in a cleanly executed putsch by a military-civilian group.

Four days after Gloria was sworn in as president by then Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr., her newly appointed Secretary of Justice Hernando “Nani” Perez issued a ruling to turn over to the Argentine firm Industrias Metalurgicas Pescarmona Sociedad Anonima (IMPSA) the controversial contract to rehabilitate the CalirayaBotocan-Kalayaan power plant in Laguna. After being exposed by the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ), the Office of the Ombudsman conducted an investigation which led to the filing -- six years later in January 2007 - of charges of graft, extortion, and falsification of public documents against Perez and his wife for allegedly taking a $2 million kickback for the hasty approval of the $470-million contract. However, the prosecution faltered and eventually the case fell into limbo. This led Sen. Mar Roxas a year later to criticize Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez for allegedly filing a “weak” case of corruption against Perez.

It is interesting to note that Perez had been jokingly “christened” by Malacañang reporters as the “First Boyfriend.” Perez reportedly gave Gloria an orchid named “Malvarosa Princesa Gloria.”

During Gloria’s presidency, corruption spawned in every level of government creating a kleptocracy that arguably surpassed the Marcos era. It did not then come as a surprise when P-Noy’s campaign slogan, “Kung walang corrupt, walang mahirap” (No corruption, no poverty), struck a chord with the people. Vowing to stop corruption and institute “Pagbabago” (Change),

P-Noy was swept to victory by the highest margin since the end of the Marcos dictatorship. And with an 88% trust rating, he is riding the crest of a tsunami of change that is hitting the country.

The people want change, now! And P-Noy, as he promised, courageously embarked on a perilous journey that would bring change… and reconciliation. But he emphatically stressed that reconciliation has a price. During his inaugural address, he said: “To those who are talking about reconciliation, if they mean that they would like us to simply forget about the wrongs that they have committed in the past, we have this to say: there can be no reconciliation without justice.” This became the cornerstone of his goal to dismantle the culture of corruption that was gnawing away at the core of our moral values.

It is in this regard that the Truth Commission was created - to investigate and find out “the truth concerning the reported cases of graft and corruption during the previous administration, and which will recommend the prosecution of the offenders and secure justice for all.” P-Noy appointed former Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. to head the Commission, a move that drew mixed reactions. The question is: Can Davide abandon his friendship with Gloria and pursue his mission with the passion of a crusader?

Davide vs. Gloriath Now the hunt begins: Davide, the hunter; Gloria, the hunted. In a statement issued, P-Noy said, “Executive Order Number 1 begins ‘the process of bringing necessary closure to the allegations of official wrongdoing and impunity.’ ” The Commission has until December 31, 2012 to complete its mission and produce a comprehensive report which would be published upon the directive of P-Noy. As expected, Gloria indicated that she would cooperate in the investigation. However, it is doubtful if she would willingly provide anything incriminatory to her or her family. In other words, the investigation into her alleged involvement or complicity in the multitude of corruption and plunder cases would surely run into legal

August 5-20, 2010 and technical blockades. And this is where Davide might be able to overcome the legal obstacles put up

by Gloria’s battery of lawyers.

Indeed, Gloria’s first salvo is already in the works. Raul Lambino, legal counsel of Gloria’s LakasKampi-CMD party, indicated that they’re set to question before the Supreme Court the legality of the creation of the Truth Commission.

With at least 10 justices including the chief justice perceived to be Arroyo loyalists who could -- and would without batting an eye -- circumvent the law like what they did with the ban on midnight appointments, the “Arroyo Court” could arbitrarily dismantle the Truth Commission by judicial fiat.

If that happens then P-Noy may have to forget the “truth” -- which, after all, many believe is already known -- and pursue the normal route; that is, file charges against Gloria and her cohorts before the Office of the Ombudsman. However, should that happen, the main obstacle would be Ombudsman Gutierrez, a close friend of Gloria’s husband, Mike Arroyo.

If that would be the case, then an impeachment complaint for breach of public trust against Gutierrez would be in order. But with the Senate headed again by Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile, a known Arroyo friend and sympathizer, P-Noy would have a near-impossible mission in bringing Gloria to justice.

Haunted But while Gloria might be able to evade prosecution or conviction for corruption or plunder, she would not avoid the merciless torture of her own conscience that would haunt her for the rest of her life. For each waking day, she would witness people and the media ridiculing her and each sleepless night would be a torturous episode of guilt-induced nightmare.

At the end of the day, Gloria has to pay for what she has done to a nation of 90 million Filipinos who suffered and endured the clutches of corruption and the gnawing pain of poverty.

Now, they are free. And hopefully they learned something: Never again should they allow this to happen in their lives.

A Snowman Would Not Want to Keep Itself Warm (Unless It Wants to Die) (On Maintaining a Sense of Logic in Writing)

I

n 2004, when I was still living in Surrey, British Columbia, taking care of my late maternal grandfather, I also got to read books regularly to my two nieces Amber and Julie, daughters of my cousin Mike.

One evening before dinner, I helped the two adorable princesses with their respective homework. I read to Julie the book she borrowed from the school library. (Julie was in kindergarten at the time while Amber first grade, both at Maple Green Elementary.)

The book was Friendly Snowman, written by Sharon Gordon (1980, Troll Associates). It tells of how to make a snowman and what a snowman needs, including the sort of things it needs to keep itself warm, to which the ever reactive and curious Julie wondered: “Uncle, doesn’t the snowman need to be cold instead, because keeping itself warm will otherwise melt it?”

Because in the story, the snowman needed a coat, a scarf, and a bonnet to keep itself warm.

Julie seemed to have read my mind, for that was what I was exactly thinking when I got to that part of the story. “You’re right, Julie.

Brilliant!” I said with a philosophic smile on my face.

That’s the kind of details many children’s books are missing. Not because a story is only fictional that

the writer will disregard reason and logic.

So, let’s go back to the friendly snowman...

If I were the one who wrote the book, I would have definitely made the following detail: ...that the snowman needs a coat, a scarf, and a bonnet NOT because it needs to keep itself warm BUT simply for aesthetic reasons—to adorn itself, to make itself appear attractive especially to children. Because, logically, since it is chiefly made of snow and ice, a snowman would prefer a cold environment. In fact, the colder the weather, the better chance for the snowman to survive. The moment the temperature rises—becomes warmer—that would be the end of a snowman’s life, for it would surely begin to melt. Therefore, “to keep the snowman warm” defies the very essence of being a snowman. It is tantamount to killing the adorable creature.

Some people may argue, “Why put significance and emphasis on a trivial detail when, after all, the book was written particularly for children?”

My answer: For in a way, no matter how trivial such details are, we are able to instill in the minds of children a subliminal sense of logic.

As they grow up, this sense of logic can develop into an ability to make

Anyway, the writer does not need to complicate the story to correct the details. It’s simply a matter of injecting a simple sense of logic. Like, instead of writing “the snowman needs a coat, a scarf, and a bonnet to keep itself warm,” write “the snowman needs a coat, a scarf, and a bonnet to make itself attractive to children”—which is as simple as the first yet logical and more underestimating sensical. the sense of reasoning of children.

would not anyway notice their inconsistencies and logic-defying plots. Moreover, they think that because the story may be classified as fiction or fantasy that it could defy the readers’ sense of logic.

Even the greatest authors in the annals of Fantasy Fiction— the likes of J.R.R. Tolkien, Terry Brooks, and J.K. Rowling—have maintained a sense of logic in their novels— regardless whether magic was involved or not.

In that way, children are encouraged to be as imaginative and creative as they could without distorting and losing their affinity to reality. After all, most if not all the elements of fantasy fiction are rooted in the real world.
