Mud Hunting in the 2013 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 “Help! I’m stuck in mud and I can’t get out!” was my cry on Twitter last weekend as I managed to get myself stuck on a wet, sloppy and muddy dirt road just off the Perimeter Hwy. close to St. Norbert. My goal for that day was to see if I could get the Toyota Tacoma dirty enough to look like it was driven through a swamp.

Mission accomplished.

Well almost. I definitely got the Tacoma dirty and it wasn’t without moments of despair and frustration.

After an hour of “being stuck”, I finally managed to rock and roll my way out of this predicament. I was pretty excited and happy that I didn’t need a tow truck to get me unstuck. My celebratory tweet was simply, “ I’m out! I’m out!” and all my friends were relieved that they didn’t have to bail me out during the final round of the Masters.

In the time I was in the Tacoma, trying to figure out how to get out, I learned a few valuable lessons that day when it comes to driving trucks for fun. One, bring a friend with you and make sure they have a bigger truck with a fully equipped winch. The second lesson, check that the truck is equipped with all-terrain or mud tires. The Tacoma was fitted with winter

snow tires and as I demonstrated, not particularly efficient when the wheels are buried under a foot of mud. The third and most important lesson is learning how to engage 4WD properly. In my case, a quick read through the owner’s manual indicated that I had to put the vehicle in neutral as I switch from 4H to 4L. And that was how I finally rock and rolled out – switching between reverse and drive repeatedly for 20 minutes.

After all that, I had a muddy Toyota Tacoma and a harrowing tale that dominated my Facebook and Twitter timelines for a couple hours on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

My friends and followers were definitely entertained with my newbie calls for help.

I’m not a truck guy because I’m not in a profession that requires me to tow or haul anything.

However, when it comes to ripping around for a week, I’m easily swayed into being a truck guy.

When it comes to reviewing trucks, I have a dire need to drive through the back roads of rural Manitoba.

Driving around Winnipeg with 10 bundles of the Filipino Journal isn’t exactly testing the hauling or towing capacity of the Tacoma.

As a smaller truck with a short flatbed, the Toyota Tacoma still has a place in the city. I was able to easily parallel park the Tacoma in and around downtown and shopping centre parking lots. The backup camera proved to be quite useful and the camera display is embedded into the rear view mirror.

The 2013 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 Double Cab V6 is a truck and built to haul and tow things. It has a towing capacity of 6,400lbs and is equipped with a 4.0L 6-cyclinder engine. The MSRP on our tester model was $37,600 and included the TRD Sports Package.

As one last and final lesson I have learned for the next time I go mud hunting; get someone else to clean and wash the truck. I spent a good hour spraying off all the mud stuck in the wheel wells. With the truck all clean, I was able to settle on to my couch to watch the final holes of the Masters last Sunday.

he Certified General Accountants Association of Canada recently published the results of their survey concerning scams.

Although scams exist all year round, they increase around tax time. Approximately 20 per cent of Canadians have been affected by tax season scams predominately phishing, identity theft, false charities and tax preparer fraud.

“Phishing” refers to scams trying to get or “phishing” (fishing) for your personal and other private information predominately via emails and telephone calls. To avoid being taken in do not provide your social insurance, credit card, bank account or passport numbers.

my friends to not forward emails with other people’s names either being sent with the email to me or from preceding senders. Use the “bcc” to list multiple recipients if you send or forward emails.

Definitely ensure you have an up to date virus checker on your computer. I also recommend hanging up any phone call with a pause after you answer and don’t give any information or money to anyone with whom you are unfamiliar.

Identity Theft is a growing industry. I do not put anything out with names account numbers or any data in the garbage. All information in our office is securely shredded, hard drives and disks are cleaned and shredded.

Even hard drives in the copier, printer and fax are cleaned and shredded. At home everything is

shredded (or used for getting the fireplace started). Do not reveal any personal information unless you know how it will be used and make sure your computer and WiFi are password protected.

Also charities have been a huge scam over the past years.

One of the best lines of defence are to remember “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” I might even take the “probably” out of that statement. In these scams, the donation receipt was considerably larger than actual monies donated based on a rather thin premise, usually that eventual gift for which the receipt was issued had a higher market value than the money paid for it. This failed, in my opinion, on the simple concept that the price paid for the article would be the market price. In reality, it failed on many more levels as well including the illogical concept that I could donate $10,000 and receive a receipt for about three times that amount. It just sounds too good to be true.

involved in tax for over 40 years, the last thirty years in my own practice. I have never heard of anyone who can guarantee you a higher return or ensure you will receive a refund, so, if the offer is to prepare your tax and be paid based on the amount of the refund, go someplace else. There have been cases of false companies with losses being created to ensure refunds, false charity donations and inflated claims for a few examples. A reputable tax preparer with proper credentials is your safest bet to ensure a happy relationship with the Canada Revenue Agency. Another fairly recent scam has been trying to take advantage of the disability deduction. The requirements for the disability deduction are fairly clear and you have to be disabled.

If you are being encouraged to make a claim, make sure, as you should in any case, that you read the requirements and qualify.

Also make sure you use your own doctor or qualified professional to verify that you meet the definition.

UFC 161: Winnipeggers Excited for Inaugural Card

In front of a large Winnipeg crowd at The Met, the Ultimate Fighting Championship held their first press conference for UFC 161 since announcing the card back in early March. Tom Wright, Director of Operations for UFC Canada lead the conference bringing with him the two men who will square off in the main event of UFC 161; interim bantam weight champion, Renan Barao and challenger Eddie Wineland, as well as female fighter Alexis Davis who will also be competing on the card.

Winnipeggers got their first taste of the UFC’s famous accessibility and hospitality with Wineland posing for pictures and signing autographs

before the press conference, and sharing cake with the crowd afterwards as they surprised Mr. Wright for his birthday.

Alexis Davis made her pro debut in Winnipeg back in April of 2007. She returns to Winnipeg making her UFC debut June 15 taking on British fighter Rosi Sexton.

I had the pleasure of catching up with the Canadian mixed martial artist following the conference.

BIG MARV: Did you know you would be fighting in Winnipeg before you knew who your opponent was?

ALEXIS DAVIS: (laughs) Yeah. They told me they wanted me to fight at (UFC) 161. So I just started

training like I always do. I didn’t find out I was fighting Rosi (Sexton) until the day everyone announced it.

BM: What did you think when you heard it was Rosi Sexton?

AD: I was actually really happy about it. I’m a fan of her fights. So I’m really familiar with her. She comes straight forward and has really good jiu jitsu.

BM: Since you are both known for your BJJ, do you see this being a stand up battle.

AD: I think so, for the most part. But I know Rosi will come hard at me, try to get me up against the fence and take me down from there. So we are really working on defending that.

BM: Other UFC female fighters like Sarah Kauffman also fought on the last Invicta card. Usually UFC doesn’t let fighters compete for other organizations, but is it different for female competitors?

AD: I know they have a good relationship (UFC and Invicta), but I think a lot of this is our contracts were signed as Strikeforce contracts and they allowed us to compete in other organizations. But you had to clear it with them first. I can see it being the same in the UFC, until we get more and more girls fighting in the UFC. BM: Does this mean women will either have to cut down to 135lbs or fight up from a lower weight class?

AD: I’d actually like to see them add a 125lb division. There are lots of fierce, strong women that compete at that weight class.

BM: Thanks so much for your time, Alexis. Good luck with your training and your fight in June.

Bercasio wins the 1st Poster making contest

A

t the beginning, there were 34 entries; then, there were only 10 finalists; and in the late afternoon of April 6, three entries were proclaimed winners for the 1st Poster Making Contest sponsored by the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival which will be held on August 24, Saturday, at the Garden City Shopping Centre parking lot.

Edgar Bercasio, 1st Prize winner who received $1,000 cash award, has been active in creative undertaking.

For the past, he won the ManilaWinnipeg painting contest; and he had illustrated the 1st series of books written by Ligaya Buenaventura and the late Rosalinda Natividad

Cantiveros. Currently, he has been busy doing some commissioned painting. The 2nd Prize winner was Kenneth Mercado, a grade 10 student at Maples Collegiet. He received $300 cash award. He is the son of William and Elizabeth Mercado.

Melanie Mendiola Cancio, the 3rd Prize winner, received $200 cash award. The first prize cash award was donated by MP Kevin Lamouruex and the Canadian Tire, Garden City. The other cash awards were also donated by the Canadian Tire, Garden City.

Background.

In April 2010, Dr. Tricia Magsino Barnabé, a member of the MDA Communications Committee , was given approval to spearhead a musical theatre presentation with all-dentist performers. Her goal was to create a positive image of the dentists, to do good for the community beyond the dental clinics. And her vision was that like-minded dentists would enjoy themselves as they stepped out of the dental realm to sing, dance and act onstage – all while fundraising for a worthy cause.

The first All-Dentist Musical, Little Shop of Horrors, was successful in its fundraising endeavours; PTE received a net profit of approx. $38,000. The show received great reviews from audiences and critic alike so the desire for a future all-dentist musical every few years became apparent.

Inspiration for the Upcoming Show. This year, Guys and Dolls, the All-Dentist Musical, will fundraise also for CancerCare Manitoba. It is again spearheaded

by Dr. Tricia Magsino Barnabé, recently a member of the CancerCare Manitoba Board of Directors. The inspiration for the upcoming show is from the late Dr. Harvey Spiegel, who passed away from cancer in March 2012.

Ariella Arida, a 24-year-old Chemistry graduate from Alaminos, Laguna, will represent the country in the 2013 Miss Universe pageant to be held in Panama this July after emerging as the top winner in the

Binibining Pilipinas competitions last Sunday evening April 14 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Arida impressed judges during the Q & A portion with her answer on what women can teach men.

She responded, “One lesson in life that women can teach men is being sensitive. Men are more logical when it comes to decisions. They’re rational and straightforward. Unlike women, we use our hearts and we tend to get emotional when we make our decisions. Sensitivity is something that we women can teach to men.”

Arida was also judged best in swimsuit in the 50th anniversary of the country’s most presitigious beauty pageant.

Following Arida’s win are Bea Santiago, who was named as Bb. Pilipinas-International; Joanna Cindy Miranda as Bb. Pilipinas-Tourism; Johanna Datul as Bb. PilipinasSupranational; while Pia Wurtzbach bagged the first runner-up trophy.

Several special awards were also given, including Miss Friendship, which went to Lourenz

11-year-old Arixsandra Libantino from Nottingham who was born to Filipino parents from Llanera, Nueva Ecija performed a version of Jennifer Hudson’s “One Night Only,” which left Cowell and fellow judges Amanda Holden, David Walliams, and Alesha Dixon speechless.

Libantino had already made her debut on “Britain’s Got Talent” in 2011 as a painfully shy 9-year-old who nonetheless had the audience and the judges at the palm of her hands as soon as she sang her first note.

But for some reasons, Libantino audition attracted flak from some people. One Night Only tells a story of a woman telling her lover just before they will part that they have one night ‘til dawn to not pretend to care and forget about chances.

Biyayang Naghihintay Saan Ka Man Naroroon

M

ababasa sa biblia na sa murang edad pa lamang, nakaranas na ng malaking hamon sa buhay niya si Mephibosheth.

Sa pasimula, marangya ang kaniyang buhay at maituturing na isang pribilehio.

Anak siya ng isang prinsipe, si Jonathan. Ang kaniyang lolo ay si Saul, ang unang hari ng Israel.

Nagbago ang lahat isang araw nang may dumating na lalaki sa kanilang tahanan at nagbalitang patay na ang kaniyang lolo at tatay, ang prinsipe at hari ng Israel. Pinatay ang mga ito ng mga kaaway.

Nataranta ang lahat ng nasa palasyo. Nag-iyakan ang mga kamag-anak ng hari. Takot ang naghari sa lugar na iyon. Dali-dali kinuha si Mephibosheth ng kaniyang tagapag-alaga. Kinarga siya nito pero hindi sinasadyang nahulog siya. Laking gulat niya na hindi na niya maigalaw ang kaniyang mga binti. Naging isang lumpo siya Dinala siya ng kaniyang tagapag-alaga sa isang lugar na malayo sa palasyo. Doon siya itinago nang maraming taon. Maraming panahon din ang ginugol niya sa pag-iisip ng kaniyang nakaraan.

Nagunita niya ang kaniyang narinig tungkol sa kaniyang lolo na noon

ay hari ng Israel, kung paanong sumuway ito sa Diyos at ilang beses pinagtangkaang patayin si David na pinili ng Diyos na siyang susunod na hari. Narinig din niya ang malalim na pagiging magkaibigan ng kaniyang ama na si Jonathan at ni David at kung paanong ang pagkakaibigan na ito ay naputol dahil sa galit at inggit ni Haring Saul.

Tila palala pa ang kaniyang situwasyon nang isang araw ay narinig niyang siya ay nais makita ni Haring David. Takot ang naghari sa kaniya. Nagtataka rin siya kung paano nalaman ng hari ang kaniyang kinalalagyan.

Nalaman niya pagkatapos na ang kaniyang lingkod na si Ziba ang nagsabi sa hari tungkol sa kaniyang kinalalagyan. Bilang isang lumpo, hindi siya makatakbo para tumakas. Wala siyang magawa kundi harapin si haring David.

Lingid sa kaalaman ni Mephibosheth, naalala ni Haring David ang kaniyang pangako sa kaniyang matalik na kaibigan ni si Jonathan na anak ng haring kaniyang pinalitan. Nangako si David na anuman ang mangyari sa kanilan, aalagaan niya si Jonathan at ang pamilya nito. Ngunit dahil namatay sa digmaan si Jonathan, nais malaman ni David kung may

natitira pang pamilya ito na maaari niyang pakitaan ng kabutihan.

Nalaman niya sa dating utusan ng Haring Saul na si Ziba na may isa pang nabubuhay na anak si Jonathan at ito ay walang iba kundi si Mephibosheth. Pinatawag niya ito.

Buong pagpapakumbabang lumapit si Mepibosheth sa hari.

Hindi siya nakakatiyak kung anong gustong gawin nito sa kaniya. Kamatayan ba o habag ang naghihintay sa kaniya? Laking gulat niya noong sinabihan siya ng hari na huwag matakot. Sinabi pa ng hari na sa ngalan ng kaniyang amang si Jonathan, ibabalik nito ang lahat ng lupain na pagmamay-ari ng kaniyang lolo. At hindi lang iyan, araw araw, kasalo niya ang hari sa pagkain.

Nagulantang nang husto si Mephibosheth. Hindi lamang naligtas ang buhay niya bagkus biniyayaan pa siya ng lahat ng lupain na dating pagmamay-ari ng kaniyang angkan at itinuring pa siyang pamilya ni Haring David.

Ngayon lamang siya nakaranas ng ganoong uri ng habag at biyaya. Sa halip na kapahamakan, nakatangap siya ng pagpapala.

Hindi ba’t kaawa-awa ang nakaraan ni Mephibosheth? Bata pa ay nalumpo na dahil sa isang aksidente. Nawalan rin siya ng ama sa murang edad. Ang buhay na marangya ay nawala sa kaniya sa isang iglap. Nakaasa siya sa kabutihan ng tao sa paligid niya.

Nabubuhay siya sa takot na baka isang araw ay kunin ang kaniyang buhay ni Haring David dahil sa siya ay kaangkan ng taong tumugis at nagpahirap sa kaniya.

Pero nabago ang kaniyang buhay dahil sa habag ng isang lalaki,

isang lalaki na hindi niya inaasahang magbigay sa kaniya ng kahit na kaunting kabutihan- si Haring David.

Kung susuriin natin mabuti, malaki ang pagkakatulad natin kay Mepibosheth. Tayo ay pinanganak sa kasalanan. Tayo ay tinuring na kaaway ng Diyos dahil dito.

Walang magandang kinabukasang naghihintay sa atin. Namumuhay tayo araw-araw na walang kasiguraduhan sa ating buhay.

Pero dahil sa habag ng Diyos, Siya na mismo ang gumawa ng paraan upang magkaroon tayo ng pag-asa at magandang kinabukasan tulad ng ginawa ni Haring David kay Mephibosheth.

At kung tatanggapin lamang natin ang kaniyang alok tulad ng buong pagpapakumbabang pagpapasakop ni Mephibosheth kay Haring David, makakaranas tayo ng pagpapala at buhay na kasiya-siya.

Mapapabilang tayo sa pamilya ng Diyos. Mababalik ang mga nawala sa atin. Maliligtas ang ating buhay mula sa kapahamakan. Hindi na tayo mabubuhay pa sa takot at walang kasiguraduhan.

SC stops implementation of Comelec’s airtime cap on poll ads

T

he Supreme Court voted 9-6 to stop the Commission on Elections (Comelec) from implementing its resolution that imposed a cap on airtime of campaign advertisements for the coming elections.

Under the rule, at the start of the campaign period, Feb. 12, all national candidates will have 120 minutes in all TV networks and 180 minutes in all radio stations. Local candidates, meanwhile, have 60 minutes in all TV networks and 90 minutes in all radio stations.

But petitioner Senator Alan Peter Cayetano as well as media outlets GMA7, TV5 and Bombo Radyo also filed separate petitions with the high court questioning the legality of the Comelec resolution.

Cayetano said Comelec Resolution 9615 is unconstitutional since it limits the people’s right to information by putting a limit on the advertising time of a candidate GMA7 said the resolution and its amendment Resolution No. 9631 are both too restrictive.

For its part, TV5 said the new rule failed to provide for a definite manner in which aggregation shall be made thus making it difficult or impossible for media outlets to comply while subjecting them with possible criminal liability and loss of franchise permits.

Senator Enverga holds dialogue with Filipinos in Neepawa, Manitoba

Neepawa, Manitoba) – The Filipino Canadian community and the temporary workers here had a dialogue with Senator Tobias Enverga, Jr. when the latter visited them today.

The dialogue, held at HyLife™ Foods, a federally certified, modern pork processing facility employs 900 workers, and company Chief Operating Officer Denis Vielfaure said 600 of the workforce are Filipinos. Another 37 temporary workers from the Philippines are coming soon, he said.

Among the issues discussed was the need to build more infrastructure in preparation to the arrival of future workers. Hylife Foods is rapidly expanding, resulting from the high demand for its pork products around the world.

The workers and executives alike said that immediate planning for additional infrastructre is required, such as those in accommodation, because families of the Filipino workers will follow them soon here.

They said that the concerns were likewise brought to the attention of Neepawa Mayor Ken Waddell.

On another note, the company executives indicated their great satisfaction with the hard work and the dedication of their Filipino workers.

Meanwhile, the Filipino workers expressed their wish that more representation in Winnipeg and Neepawa be extended by the Philippine Consulate General.

Senator Enverga said he would relay the message to the Consulate General’s Office in Toronto – which has the responsibility for Filipinos at the two areas.

The Filipino Workers were very thankful for the opportunity that Canada has given them. At the same time, they expressed their appreciation that a FilipinoCanadian is representing them in the

upper house of the Government of Canada.

Senator Enverga will work with Neepawa Member of Parliament Robert Sopuck to ensure that concerns are addressed to the best of their capacity.

Neepawa – which in Cree means “Land of Plenty”, is located 185 km Northwest of Winnipeg.

The town was incorporated 1883, and, as of 2011, its population has grown to over 4,000. Population is estimated to swell to 5,000 by the end of 2013 due to the arrival of Temporary workers, mostly from the Philippines.

Senator Tobias Enverga Jr, inspires kababayans during his 1st visit in Winnipeg Senator Tobias Enverga, Jr, the 1st Filipino Canadian being appointed Prime Minister Stephen Harper at the House of Senate, met the various groups of Filipinos and discussed various issues and projects during his two-day visit in Winnipeg as as one of the guests of the fundraising event of Lawrence Toet, member of the parliament, Elmwood and Transcona Riding.

“I do represent all Filipino Canadians in the Senate and let me assure you that all your concerns and ideas are properly brought to their attention. Mabuhay tayong mga Filipino,” Senator Enverga stressed to the guests who attended the dinner at Pampanga Banquet Hall. “And I thank you for your warm welcome on my 1st visit. This is only the beginning of our continuous dialogue.”

Another guest of the fundraising event, Honorable Vic Toews, minister for Public Safety, gave the over-view of the immigration and how it is positively affecting the economy. Friday morning, MP Lawrence Toet and Senator Enverga met with the officer and members of the Manitoba Filipino Business Council at Fort Gary Hotel: “It was a great to have a coffee chat with the members of the Manitoba Filipino Business Council,” said MP Lawrence Toet. “It is important that we continue to have these conversations so that our families, our communities and our countries can prosper.

“This is only the beginning of our discussions and we will try very hard to addresss the concerns of the Filipino community,” Enverga said as the face to face discussion with the members of the MFBC continued.

Thursday, Senator Enverga was able to visit and to chat with the management and Filipino employees of Highlfe Foods in Neepawa. During Senator Enverga’s visit, he met MLA Stu Briese, Member of Parliament Robert Sopuck, and Neepawa Mayor Ken Waddell.

“The presence of the Filipino skilled workers in Neepawa has a tremendous impact in our economy,they are positive additions to our regions,” said MP Sopuck.

show, the crowd was treated to a cardio rich dance performance by Len and Andrea of Enigma Dance Factory.

Co producers, Tia Polvorosa and Ken Lozano titled their event "UNVEILED: baring the artistic soul" for two reasons.

First, their goal was to unveil style by showcasing the different

components, "de-constructing fashion" if you like.

Secondly, on a personal level, our young and energetic entrepreneur, Tia, has bared her artistic soul to reveal to the public that heart disease does not just affect our senior citizens. Tia revealed that she has a serious heart disease, and that she continues her hectic schedule only because of the miracles

performed at the Heart Failure Clinic of St-Boniface Hospital.

This event was a fundraiser for the Heart Failure Clinic team that silently goes about performing life saving miracles day after day.

Tia and Ken thank all who volunteered, supported, donated and attended this event to help Tia give back to the Heart Failure Clinic that has saved her life, and that of countless others.

Winnipeg Jets Report

Down… But Not Out!

T

he month of April for the Winnipeg Jets could easily be compared to a heavyweight prizefight.

The challenger (Winnipeg) would take their lumps and get knocked down early on but would battle back in the middle rounds to make the fight’s conclusion a nail biter. The way the playoff race is shaping up, the Jets are in for a twelve round battle.

Big Apple Blues The Jets started off the month of April with back-to-back games against the New York Rangers and New York Islanders.

Winnipeg would be in tough as both opponents were also seeking playoff berths. The Rangers would get two goals from forward Derek Stepan and would win 4-2. The following night, the Jets would take on a resurgent Islanders club who had won four out of their last five games. Jets defenseman Paul Postma scored twice but was the lone bright spot as Islanders star John Tavares had a goal and an assist to lead the Isles to a 5-2 victory.

Canada’s Best Next up was the Northeast leading Montreal Canadiens. The Jets found out the hard way why the Canadiens were the top team in Canada losing 4-1.

Despite outshooting the Habs 34-24, only Alexander Burmistrov could get one past backup goaltender Peter Budaj.

Montreal forward Michael Ryder would pot two goals in the victory.

Home Is Where The Heart Is After five straight losses, Winnipeg would get off the canvas

and take the fight at home . The result?

Four straight wins and some playoff hope. The Jets started off with an easy 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Evander Kane had a goal and an assist and Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov would get pulled much to the delight of the sold out crowd.

Ladd Leads the Charge If there were any critics regarding the leadership of Andrew Ladd, they were silenced in games against the Buffalo Sabres, Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning.

With every game a must win, Ladd rose to the occasion and tallied 4 goals and 3 assists in the three game span. Winnipeg would beat the Sabres 4-1, dismantle the Panthers 7-2, and would hang on for a shootout win against the Lightning to win 4-3.

Ladd would also score the shootout clincher against the Lightning.

Jets coach Claude Noel talked about Andrew Ladd’s performance and how it inspired his teammates.

“He drives the bus,” Noel said.

“That’s what [Ladd] can do, [Ladd] can do those things and can really help your team both in the game, on the ice and off the ice.”

At press time, the Jets were tied with the Rangers for the eighth and final playoff spot with the Rangers having a game in hand. With only five games remaining, every game is a must-win. Buckle up, Jets fans.

The final stretch will be a fight to the finish.

Time Magazine article brings total engagement to raise fund for cancer cure!

I have never read an article on cancer for more than 9nth times.

Each time I read, I put the message into my hearts; and each time I read, I am totally overwhelmed for I connect the word cancer to what it has done to my life. Everybody knows that my wife of 35 years,

Rosalinda Linsangan Natividad, a native of Gapan City and an alumna of the old St. Theresa’s College in Manila, passed away from the complications of a breast cancer.

Last Month, I came across a copy of a Time Magazine, April

1, issue, a bold title on its cover: “How To Cure Cancer” I paid an attention to the asterisk: “Yes, it’s now possible – thanks to new cancer dream teams that are delivering better results faster”

by Bill Saporito. I turned the page and I read:” The Conspiracy to End Cancer!” But the blurb strongly stated: “a team based, cross disciplinary approach to cancer research is upending tradition and delivery results faster!”

Before my wife’s mastectomy in 2000, I would not even bother to read any write-up on cancer.

The word connotes a negative vibration in my nerves. I am afraid of the word. I had been in contact with my friends who suffered so much pain and suffering and most of them passed away. It is a total denial of the reality in life.

What I read most are features and columns on how to prevent cancer.

As a foodie, I do prepare and cook superfoods and during those days, I wanted my wife to be free from radicals by eating lots of antioxidants. But I the back of my mind, I do remember her mom who succumbed to a breast cancer few years ago. I had become uneasy. Is breast cancer hereditary?

But one night, before we retired, Linda dropped a bombshell!

By tomorrow, in a mellowed voice, she would undergo a radical operation on her right breast to remove the cyst which was cancerous. The word cancer blocked my consciousness, tongue-tied and as if the wall clock fell and the time stopped. Am I dreaming, and I shoke my head.

Linda was calm and she said that it was not evasive, still at an early stage. Men in general are weak, so emotional, so defensive. But Linda was calm and apologetic: “Dad, I will be okey.” Deep inside, it is a death sentence!

I started reading feature articles, medical reports, internet, columns and broadcast about breast cancer. When I was alone, fear had become a dark shadow.

But hope started to clinch my quest. Linda would be okey.

She was strong, vibrant, and had unwavering faith in God. Hoping that cure would be available. And with those millions of dollars being raised to spend on cancer research, time would come that cure is possible. Faith in God; and hope for the cure made us normal people.

For many years, we were living with cancer. It was a social gathering every time she would go for a chemo session; and it was a normal routine for her radiation schedule. Life went on normally.

Linda would be more involved in the various community activities and events. Being the publisher and the editor-in- chief of our family business, the Filipino Journal, she never missed her responsibility to make our newspaper a real “pulse of the Filipino community”. For me, as I mentioned one time, jokingly, that she married a community. She just smiled and kissed me.

We joined various fundraising events to raise money for cancer research. We would join the marathons. My two sons and I were totally involved. Our friends did share our missions.

More involvement, more money cancer research. And we raised the bar so high. Thinking, that someday, sooner, cure for cancer would be available. I knew millions of dollars have been raised to financially support the various research projects to find a cure.

But in December 2007, life had changed for Linda. She was hospitalized but rather to have a good rest, her involvement to the Filipino community did not stop.

Her board of directors would visit her and discussed the problems and solutions being encountered by the organization. Her room had become a board room and she enjoyed it. She was still the front and centre of her volunteerism.

stay in the hospital was stressful every time when the doctor would tell her: “Have you prepared the end of life?” And Linda would answer back, with hope: “Who are you, God?” It pained me every time they would say those words to us.

It was more than a death penalty.

These doctors had lost empathy, a human touch, a compassion.

After more than two months, she succumbed to this dreadful disease. Her life was cut short. I became an instant widower; my two sons, without mother. Such a deep void was unfilled. Reality turned into denials.

I thought that there would be cure for breast cancer? What happened to the millions of dollars earned by the continuous fundraising for the cure? Was there really a cure? Would cancer be “a thing of the past?” Same what happened to tuberculosis and polio? My attitude had changed.

One night, I was watching a TV program and the discussion was about the search for cure. Nothing had been found. What happened to the millions of dollars raised? I got frustrated. I was shortchanged.

I was robbed! I decided not to join any fundraising, let alone to contribute any penny. Linda is gone; and my interest to join for the cure turned cold.

But there was a 360 degrees change of heart.

I bought the magazine and I went to a coffee shop to read the article on cancer. I turned the pages of the magazine and the headline of the magazine turned my upside down! The title states: “ The Hero Scientist who defeats cancer will like never exist”. I felt the cold breeze even I was inside the coffee shop. So, cancer, therefore, is incurable no matter how million of dollars are spent in cancer research? Nevertheless, I started reading the feature article.

My ill feelings had changed and my eyes had opened and my heart started throbbing when a single continuation on page 29

two countries. I said to myself, very promising. I did read slowly to understand every word in the article. Each word has become an additive to my negative attitude towards cancer care fund raising.

The Time Magazine article touched my very sensitivity to the advancement of cancer research .This line touches my nerve: “Cancer is a thief and biological con artist, breaking into and taking control of the mechanism of a cell and coaxing it to grow and divide in dangerous ways.”

In addition to the inspiring facts, that in MD Anderson Cancer Centre, thru its president, Dr. Ronald DePinho, adopted a similar collaborative approach around what the world renowned institute call its “Moon Shot Programs,” assembling six multidisciplinary groups to mount comprehensive attacks on eight cancers: lung, prostate, melanoma, breast, ovarian and three types of leukemia. And the attached price: $3 billion throwdown!

I read on and on until i have almost memorized the words, the facts and figures, the inspiring efforts of the cross-disciplinary and cross-institutional research teams. I am carried away by the progress of the research. I think of my wife, Linda...but my contentment followed as she said: “Dad, there is always a reason why it happens. God provides.”

And thinking of the probability of getting any type of cancer: 1 in every 2 men; and, 1 in 3 women, my goose bump raises and a feeling of cold snap; And with that $3 billion throwdown for cancer cure, my feeling of involvement is satiated!

Let us run for a cure!

My heart goes out to the friends and family of the police officer killed today. I also wish for a speedy recovery of the wounded officer.

We commend local officials who have condemned these attacks and have pledged to continue the

vaccination campaign in spite of violent opposition. We urge the Pakistani government, religious and community leaders to assist in providing a safe environment for polio eradication workers and those that protect them.

topic of the article had so much interest: “the presence of the socalled “dream team” funded by STAND UP TO CANCER (SU2C) I read the article with so much enthusiasm and with excitement of discovery.

I dreaded the statistical date of success and failures of all kinds of cancers. I coffee had becoming cold as I read the hot reality of cancer especially the costs of cancer research for 2008: a hefty, and a mind boggling amount! $77.4 billion dollars; and lost production of $124.billion! And the most uninspiring: probability of developing some type of cancer over one’s lifetime: For men, 1 in 2; for women, 1 in 3! It breaks my heart! Someday, I will be a number in the stats.

I read on and on with so much self-consciousness of my own destiny. Men? 1 in 2? I counted those men drinking coffee groggily and chattily in the coffee shop. There were 14 of us men.( at least 7 women)..so, if the equation is right, 7 of us would not develop some type of cancer; and the other 7 would? Which group would I be? Nobody knows, I guess.

At first, I read the whole article with so much apprehension.

Leisurely, I would admit as the stat would say that men have more chance to get cancer than women.

I did read again as I got another coffee refill. And as I read those information given by the works of the dream cancer team funded by SU2C, I got inspired by the very germ and content of the article.

Wow! The survival rate has gone up from 10.8 to 13.7. Even it is an American statistical data, it would be the same as the Canadian reality. What separates Canada and the USA in North America is the invisible border between these
