Edmonton, July 1, 2016 (Canada Day) at Mama Nita's Restaurant.

Mr. Benjie Lindo, Duterte's campaign manager for Alberta, and his Team had organized a Victory Party in honor of President-Elect Rody Duterte as well as the Meet and Greet with Hon. Julius Torres, the first Consul General for Alberta and Saskachewan.

The Consul General proudly declared that the Consular Office in Calgary is now on its fullblown operations. He mentioned that the Issuance of Philippine Passport will be made available not only in his office but also during the outreach programs that will be scheduled sooner.

Hence, whoever needs to renew the Passport will no longer need to fly to Vancouver.

This event was attended by different Filipino individuals, families, businessmen, politicians, organizations, the Alberta Filipino Journal and other media personalities.

Reacquiring a dual citizenship was top of my bucket list.

The embassy website in Vancouver is user-friendly and accurate. I completed the requirements listed in there and submitted the documents personally. I was told to go back the following week for oath taking.

ive weeks after former Davao City Mayor Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte was sworn in as President of the Philippines, his promise to rid the country of criminality and illegal drugs is paying off.

To date, more than 400 people – drug lords, drug pushers, drug addicts, house thieves, and other kinds of criminals -- have been killed and more than 4,000 captured. But here’s the stinger: police say that 565,806 have turned themselves in since the crackdown began. And by the looks of it, the purge had just started. What we’re seeing is just the tip of a bloody iceberg that’s sending chills down the spine of those who are involved in the country’s illegal drug trade.

Yes! Finally, the government is coming down on them with vengeful fury.

Are we expecting this to happen?

Yes, because that’s precisely what Duterte promised he’d do if he were elected president.

He vowed that he would get rid of criminality and illegal drugs in the country in three to six months. And the people said, yesss! He said he’d kill 100,000 criminals and dump their bodies in the Manila Bay to fatten the fishes, and the people loved it!

He went on to ride the crest

of a popular movement to fight crime and corruption that has laid the country in a dysfunctional state and emotional ruins where life is the cost of a meal. Digong knew these problems because those were the same problems he fought in the 22 years that he was mayor of Davao City. He fixed Davao’s crime problems and he promised the voters he’d fix the country’s crime problems if they elect him to the presidency. Not only did they give him what he wanted, the people gave him a mandate... a bloody mandate!

Some say his victory was sweet and romantic. Nay, it was an earthshaking revolution. It was no different from any other revolution where blood is necessarily spilled to cleanse the foundation for a new social order to be built upon.

Digong and Bato And leading Duterte’s “enforcers” is his most trusted police commander, Gen. Ronald Dela Rosa, whom he appointed as the Director General of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

“Bato,” as Dela Rosa is called, is charged with the daunting task of cleaning up the 160,000-strong police force of erring officers involved in the illegal drug trade and getting rid of the drug lords they were protecting, including corrupt politicians who were in cahoots with the drug traders.

At midnight last Sunday, August 7, Duterte dropped a bombshell when he named a long list of mayors, congressmen, judges, policemen, and soldiers whom he accused of involvement in the drug trade. One-by-one he read the names in a nationally televised speech. He said that the police and military had validated the names, but he added: “I am the one

reading it and I am the sole person responsible for this one.” He also stripped the accused government officials of their police escorts and relieved the policemen who were on the list as well. To drive his point across, Duterte issued shootto-kill orders against those who resisted arrest.

Shoot-to-kill The first on the list was Albuera, Leyte mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. who surrendered to Dela Rosa after hearing that Duterte ordered to “shoot him on sight like a dog” because he was treating the people like dogs. Meanwhile, Espinosa’s son, Kerwin, who is alleged to be the drug lord responsible for the illicit drug trade in Eastern Visayas, is believed to be hiding somewhere in Malaysia. He had sent surrender feelers, saying that he’d only surrender personally to Bato. So far, no final arrangement has been made.

But it’s not just politicians and drug traders who are being hit by Bato’s “avengers” – as his special anti-drug police squads are called.

It just seems that Bato is living up to a popular Filipino adage, which says: “Bato bato sa langit ang tamaan huwag magalit.” Loosely translated, it says: “When I throw a stone up in the air, don’t get mad if you’re hit on its way down.”

Nobody is exempt from this adage as what had happened to PNP Superintendent Victor Pagulayan -station commander of a barangay (village) in Quezon City -- for his alleged failure to rid his area of rampant criminality and illegal drugs. He’s been “exiled” to the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARRM) where he joined about 44 other “exiled” police officers for their involvement in the illegal drug trade. Incidentally, this was the region where 44 members of PNP’s Special Action Force (SAF) were massacred by Muslim rebels in Mamasapano, Maguindanao in 2015.

“We are far from over,” declared Bato. “We still have five months to go. More lives will be lost along the way be they criminals or those of my own men,” he said.

Lone voice in the wilderness But while the people were awed and shocked at the speed and intensity of Duterte’s anti-crime campaign, there was one person – Vice President Leni Robredo -who questioned the “extrajudicial killings.” She also deplored the absence of public outcry against the alarming increase in the number of drug traders killed by policemen or vigilante groups.

But could it be that the reason why there is lack of public outcry is

because the people are fed up with the criminality that has engulfed their lives? Could it be that their lives’ security hinges on the elimination of society’s number one scourge? Could it be that people are so downtrodden and frustrated that what Digong and Bato achieve would justify the means they employ?

Duterte’s revolution And this reminds me of the French Revolution, which had put to an end the centuries of oppression and poverty in a society divided into two distinct classes: the haves and the have-nots. In the end, the people achieved what they wanted: liberty, equality, and fraternity. But it came with a stiff price: It was a bloody revolution and the collateral damage was high. But what was the alternative?

In Duterte’s revolution, there is not a shadow of a doubt that there would be collateral damage; that is, innocent people would be killed. Some people would use the situation to take revenge against people who had hurt them in the past. And this had happened a whole lot at times in wars where justice might sometime take a back seat or turn a blind eye. But what can one do to avoid collateral damage? Some people say that it comes with the territory. Could it then be rationalized by saying that killing nine criminals and one innocent person is better than letting these nine criminals live to harm a thousand innocent people?

It might sound convoluted but that is the reality of life in this imperfect world.

So, when Bato throws a stone up in the air, don’t get mad if you’re hit on its way down.” Yep, “Bato bato sa langit ang tamaan huwag magalit.”

Caveat: The “bato” that hit you could be Bato Dela Rosa himself.

Arum confirms Hidilyn Diaz ends Philippines Pacquiao’s next fight Olympic silver medal drought

op Rank Inc. chief Bob Arum has already booked the Thomas and Mack Center at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for Manny Pacquiao’s comeback fight on November 5.

Arum said the Filipino champion may fight the winner

of the light welterweight clash between Terence Crawford and Viktor Postol this Sunday.

Also on the shortlist is Jessie Vargas, another Top Rank fighter.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao previously said he will prioritize his duties as a Senator of the Philippines over fighting again in the ring.

I still can't believe that I have been promoted to the position I did not aspire to acquire.

Hidilyn Diaz finished with a score of 200kg at women’s weightlifting thus ending the 20-year Olympic medal drought for the Philippines.

Diaz, a native of Zamboanga City, secured a silver medal in the 53-kg weightlifting division of the 2016 Summer Games on Sunday, August 7 (Monday morning, August 8 in Manila) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Aside from winning the first medal for the country in the 2016 Rio Olympics, she also made history for the Philippines by becoming the first female athlete to win an Olympic medal, the first Filipino to win a medal in weightlifting, and the first non-boxer to win a medal from the Philippines since Photo by Lars Baron/Getty Images 1936.

Meet & Greet with the Senator Tobias (Jun) Enverga

T

o meet our very own Filipino Senator Tobias Enverga and to be able to express the Western views in terms of the present economic situation in Alberta is worth just to ''meet and greet ' our Canadian senator. Senator Enverga assumed his office on September 6, 2012 representing the province of Ontario and sits at the Senate as Conservative. With Rod Cantiveros of Manitoba Filipino Journal, we were treated for a luncheon at the elegant dining of the The David Duncan House. Both of us were entertained by his gracious wife Rosemer.

Our mission in Toronto were twofold; first to attend the Lopezenos International at Niagaral Falls for a Grand Reunion on July 9, 2016 and secondly to visit Senator Enverga's office and voice our concerns. Part of our mission is to establish a Filipino National Congress that will represent the Filipinos as a whole in Ottawa. Not impossible,but probable if we can only have the coordination of all the leaders of the provinces in Canada. Since we already have the Congress of the Philippine Association of Alberta and the Manitoba Council of Filipino Associations, then its time to work on calling other provinces to move forward and organize their groups.

The meeting was adjourned when the group of international Filipino designer Rocky Gathercole joined us to promote his upcoming fashion show in Brampton. With Senator busy schedule and his capacity as Canadian Senator, he promised to schedule a time in the future to attend the COPAA's function in the future.

Growing Up Canadian: Filipino Traditions I Can't Let Go Of Little Me and the Big World

eing born in Canada with parents who came from the Philippines, I was raised with a mix of both Filipino and Canadian traditions. Trying to balance and identify with both has always been an ongoing battle of mine – but a good battle. As I grow older and become my own individual by creating my own traditions and practices, I still however notice there are a few Filipino traditions I can’t seem to let go of.

The tsinelas at all times As we all know, for most Filipinos tsinelas – or slippers – must be worn inside the house at all times. If you go to another Filipino’s home, you’ll find various pairs already waiting for you at the entrance: flips flops, straw sandals, or slip-on house shoes. Now, wearing slippers isn’t really my thing. But as soon as I take off my shoes, I can already imagine Lola glaring at my awkward tsinelas-less feet as I walk away.

The hoarding There’s something about Filipinos and keeping every napkin, take-out utensil, to-go container, and hotel soap we can find. It’s as if the apocalypse were to happen tomorrow. We always tend to take more than necessary — you just never know when you are going to need a packet of

ketchup – and I always thought this was quite ridiculous until the day I unconsciously found myself doing the same.

One day, I was in need of a napkin after accidently spilling a drink on myself, and guess who had about ten buried at the bottom of her purse? This girl. Step aside, Tide To-Go. The balikbayan box Turns out, we even hoard when traveling. Last summer while I was abroad, I accidentally found myself assembling items for a balikbyan box. I thought by being a minimalist travel I could separate myself from that stereotype, but no. When a Filipino travels to another country (say, to visit the homeland before returning to Canada), they more than likely will return with a balikbayan box, like coming home with souvenirs for your family and friends — except Filipinos take it to the next level: while everyone else at the airport is waiting for a suitcase or two at the luggage carrousel, Filipinos are waiting for a box filled with nothing but cute little trinkets. I mailed mine home. No shame.

The karaoke lifestyle If you so much as dare breathe the words “karaoke” to a Filipino, you will find yourself in a never ending musical trap. The average Canadian family may rarely sing a tune in front of one another just for fun. My family and extended family will turn it into a show, complete with little prizes or gifts at the end. I’m never surprised to come home to my mother practicing her new favorite Barbra Streisand tune on the karaoke machine. It’s not a joke or silly past time, but a way of life.

The foreign items Tucked away in the corner of my kitchen is a stick with a bundle of straws tied to the bottom of it.

It’s our broom. This may be the only item we have in our house to clean up messes in the kitchen.

It’s literally the only item we’ve ever had. We live in Canada — people are using a Swiffer WetJet like it’s nothing. My family is using a bundle of straws.

I never really understood how weird it may be, until a friend of mine listened in with a puzzled look on her face, trying to piece it all together.

The naming protocol In Tagalog, to show respect for your elders, you must precede their name with either manong or kuya. In my life, I have only once referred to my brother as simply Peter, instead of Manong Peter.

Born and raised in Canada with a Filipino background, Rosalyn is your typical North American girl, with a little bit of a multi-cultural edge. She has spent numerous months abroad travelling to various countries on her own. Exploring different cultures and connecting with nature has always been a passion of hers. Filipino community in Winnipeg mourning the loss of David Medina and Jhonalyn Javier Family, relatives and friends of two young Filipino kids are mourning the loss of David Medina, 12 and Jhonalyn Javier, 11. The drowning victims were pulled from the water at Grand Beach on Monday, August 1st.

David is turning 13 years old, and he migrated here in Winnipeg last Nov 26, 2014. They’re originally from Dasmarinas, Cavite.

While Jhonalyn is only 11 years old and arrived here last year Aug 12, 2015 from Angeles City, Pampanga.

Insolvencies in Alberta rise 35 per cent year-over-year Albertans feel the effects of the Fort McMurray crisis and a crippling oil industry

Superior Court found Cusipag & Balita The 10 Most In-Demand Jobs in Canada Right Now liable for defamation

n July 13, the Honourable Sidney Lederman, Judge of the Superior Court of Justice, ruled in favour of the Honourable Tobias C. Enverga Jr., Ontario Senator, in his defamation lawsuit against Balita Media Inc. and publisher Tess Cusipag, in a damning verdict over false and defamatory remarks published about the Senator which alleged fraud related to fundraising efforts on behalf of the Kalayaan Cultural Community Centre (KCCC) in 2000.

The judge awarded Senator Enverga general and aggravated damages, in addition to punitive damages and a permanent injunction against the publisher and her company to publish/broadcast, or assist or encourage others to publish/ broadcast, any statements about the issues related to the Senator’s role in KCCC fundraising, the charitable status of the Philippine Canadian Charitable Foundation (PCCF) and Senator Enverga being a biological and pathological liar.

In the judgement, Justice Lederman wrote in part: “In the end, the defendants have no reliable evidence to prove the truth of the

In fact, Cusipag admitted on discovery that it is not true that Senator Enverga committed a fraud in relation to fund raising activities and that the PCCF allegations are false.” “… an award of punitive damages is necessary in this case.

She published a warning

The judgement is clear on the motivation of the Balita publisher, stating that: “Cusipag was motivated by malice. She obviously holds a deep seated resentment towards Senator Enverga. She used his comments to the Philippine press as a springboard to vent her unfounded allegations in the published Article and her Facebook to intentionally besmirch Senator Enverga’s reputation in the Filipino-Canadian community.” After receiving the decision, Senator Enverga’s counsel, Howard W. Winkler, told the Senator: “The decision is a complete vindication of your reputation. The decision is a complete indictment of Ms. Cusipag.”

“I am relieved by the court’s decision on this matter,” said Senator Enverga in a statement. “This is a victory for the community,” Senator Enverga ended.

T

he skyline of The Strip, Las Vegas, has been changing since the early to late 1940s when the small building boom began. The first hotel on what would become The Strip was the Rancho Vegas opened in 1941, later destroyed by fire in 1960, followed by Hotel Last Frontier in 1942. The Flamingo

by Bugsy Siegel opened in 1946 after World War II with its neon lights and pink flamingo lawn ornaments.

Las Vegas boom continues to accelerate and prosper in the 50's bringing more casino-hotels. The Desert Inn opened in 1950, the Sahara in 1952, then the Sands (closed 1969 where the Venetian now stands), followed in 1955 by Hotel Riviera, the first Strip high rise at nine stories (closed 2015) with Liberace as its featured headliner and its traditional revue "Splash". Then came along the Royal Nevada which was converted to become part of Stardust (which closed in 2006), followed by the Dunes (closed

in 1993 where the Bellagio now stands) and Tropicana.

Also taking off with the rise of the resort hotels and casino is the entertainment industry.

Consequently, people poured into Las Vegas not just for gambling but also for entertainment thus becoming a part of the "Rat Pack`entertainment experience of the 50s. Notably identified with the Rat Pack was singer-Hollywood actor Frank Sinatra together with Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford, Marilyn Monroe, Shirley MacLaine, and Lauren Bacall. From the Desert Inn to the Sands and to MGM Grand, Frank Sinatra played to sold-out performances for 43 years.

In 1954 then actor and future President of the United States Ronald Reagan made his only appearance on a Las Vegas stage as a song-and-dance man at the Hotel Last Frontier with a singing group male quartet called `The Continentals``. Ronald Reagan`s short-lived Las Vegas act also included chimpanzees

With the Rat Pack Entertainment The Strip continued to expand and more resorts offer attractions geared toward the youth in an effort to attract families. As luxury resorts appeared so did the retailers, designers from Neiman Marcus to Gucci, Prada, and Tiffany, and also performers like Cirque de Soleil, Elton John, Celine Dion, Michael Buble, Mariah Carey, and J Lo. Caesars Palace opened in 1966 with its Roman Empire theme. Its main performance venue is `The Colosseum` which was originally built at a cost of US$95 million for Canadian singer Celine Dion`s show ``A New Day` in 2003. After a

departure in 2007 Celine returned to the Colosseum in 2011 with her new show entitled `Celine` which is under contract for 70 shows per year through 2017.

We`re mesmerised by her show in January 2016 just before it was cancelled due to her husband`s death. The spectacular show opens with videos submitted by her fans singing to Celine`s Ì Drove All Night ` while holding handwritten signs of affection in front of iconic landmarks from around the world before the superstar walks out on the stage singing `Ì Surrender` with the accompaniment of 31-piece orchestra band and back-up singers and with a 180-degree screen in the background. The two-hour show ended with the Titanic movie theme song ``My Heart Will Go On`.

Perhaps the best hotel in town for kids, family-oriented Circus Circus opened in 1968 with an indoor amusement theme park called Adventuredome offering 25 rides and attractions including the Canyon Blaster Roller coaster, 18-hole miniature golf course, an arcade, clown shows, and other carnival-type games.

In 1969 the International Hotel opened, renamed Las Vegas Hilton in 1971, then renamed Las Vegas Hotel & Casino and changed to Westgate Las Vegas in 2014. Newly renovated Westgate has deep roots in Las Vegas history as the hotel Elvis Presley called home back in the late 60s to 70s when he performed more than 800 consecutive sold-out shows. As a tribute to Elvis the hotel added a new Elvis Presley Graceland Wedding Chapel.

uisa Marshall aka Tina Turner impersonator, visited Edmonton, part of Hope Beyond Thunderdome Tour 2016 this summer a fund raising tour on Canadian Veteran PTSD Awareness(Spring/Summer) Together with her husband Steve and two daughters Zenia and Kimi, the family undeniably know how to entertain a crowd of Canadians and some Filipino Canadians alike.

A 10 according to the most of the audience who wanted more of Tina's performance. Rocking and dancing, the crowd got their money's worth. "Thank you and comeback again" one admirer hooted.

Under these lights, you can see a city emerge from the dark ages.

In most of Edmonton, streetlights are just that. Bulbs, affixed to poles, clinging to a power-plant past. But one corner of the city is seeing things differently, thanks to technologies like hybrid lights that run off both sun and wind.
