The 26-year-old reigning Miss Universe from the Philippines said she is excited to be a part of the biggest game in America, and even found herself learning how to dab.

Reigning Miss Universe gamely learned “dabbing” from American football team Carolina Panthers complete with her crown and sash as well as her media ID and microphone in place. The dance was popularized by Panthers quarterback Cam Newton as a posttouchdown celebration in recent

games. His teammates have since adapted the dance with the fans joining the craze.

When asked about the Miss Universe pageant mix-up, she said she’s not thinking about it anymore. She added that she is more interested in who would be crowned the kings of the NFL come Sunday night.

The Super Bowl 50 features the football game between Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos that will determine the champion of the 2015 season of the National Football League (NFL). It will be held on Sunday, February 7 in San Jose, California, USA.

Observers, including Freddie Roach, think the boxing icon Manny Pacquiao, will still continue fighting despite announcing his retirement after his fight with Timothy Bradley this April.

Roach says a lot depends on whether Manny wins the senatorial race or not.

Pacquiao is running for senator under the party of VP Jejomar Binay and currently ranking at 8th place among other senatoriables.

MVP Hopeful for Gilas’ race to Rio

The path to Rio Olympics is undeniably tough with powerhouse teams- France, Canada and New Zealand on the hunt.

The Road may be tough but Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Manny V. Pangilinan has high hopes for the national team, Gilas Pilipinas.

Gilas is on the works in forming the best possible team as they prepare for the Fiba Olympic Qualifying Tournament on July 5-10 on our own turf.

Philippines will be facing the toughest teams in the group (B). PH will kick off its bid against France on July 5 and will face New Zealand the next day. Group A includes Canada and Turkey. Only one team will make it to the 2016 Olympics in Rio. “Of course (the expectation is), no less than the opportunity to participate in Rio. I’d like to see Filipino players, Filipino athletes belong to the Olympic movement again, not only in basketball but in other sports,” Pangilinan said Saturday night.

“We need Filipino fans to come out there fully and support the team.

I think it will be a big boost to the team’s effort,” he said.

Campaign for Councillor for Millwoods Heats Up It has been a very exciting time since the Ward 12 by-election was called. I have had the honour of being invited to so many events in the Filipino Community, and the support for my candidacy has been amazing! The City of Edmonton is greatly enriched by the Filipino presence sharing their culture and diversity that serves to strengthen the multiculturalism within our City.

There are many issues up for discussion, from tax accountability to economic diversity.

We need to find innovative ways to increase commercial and industrial development, to create jobs, to keep construction going during the economic down turn the country is facing.

There are many empty buildings right here in Mill Woods, so attracting growth is very important.

EDCA: A new strategic partnership

wenty-four years after the Philippine Senate rejected the extension of the American bases, the Philippine Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA). EDCA is an “executive agreement” between the U.S. and the Philippines that would allow the American military to once again set foot on Philippine soil. It didn’t take long for the Philippines to act; she immediately offered eight strategic locations throughout the country where the U.S. could position equipment and personnel on a rotational basis.

It’s interesting to note that prior to the Supreme Court’s ruling, every time American warships docked at the Subic port (formerly Subic Naval Base), they were met by protesting leftist groups displaying anti-American signs. This time around, when the USS Topeka, a nuclear attack submarine, docked at Subic a few hours before the high court decision was announced, it was welcomed by a marching band composed of local students.

Changing times Indeed, times have changed since the Philippine Senate, by a narrow 12-11 vote, decided not to renew the U.S. bases agreement

in 1991. A year later, after then President Cory Aquino’s administration tried vainly to work out an extension, the U.S. flag was lowered in Subic for the last time. Since then, leftist and nationalist groups have vigilantly opposed any presence of American forces on Philippine soil. It was a period when the nationalists proudly declared the Philippines as “truly independent.” However, it was also a dark period when China started grabbing Philippine territories including the Panganiban (Mischief) Reef, Scarborough Shoal, and six other islands where she built artificial islands that could be used for military purposes. China has been trying to expel a contingent of Philippine Marines guarding the Ayungin Shoal in a grounded and rusty naval vessel, the BRP Sierra Madre.

But it was when China started building the artificial islands that the nationalist legislators began to worry. They turned to the U.S. for help but Uncle Sam stayed out of the disputed islands, claiming neutrality. Some of them even tried to invoke the US-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT), which makes one wonder: Did they expect the Americans to come to the aid of the Philippines after they were booted out of the country? And these “patriotic” legislators know that with a navy without warships and an air force without warplanes, the country is helplessly -- and hopelessly -- at the mercy of China.

It did not then come as a surprise when President Benigno Aquino III opened the doors for the U.S. to station troops and equipment on a rotational basis.

And that’s when EDCA came to fruition. But it wasn’t easy. As soon as the EDCA was signed

in April 2014, several leftist and nationalist personalities petitioned the Supreme Court to declare EDCA unconstitutional. Among them were former Senators Rene Saguisag and Wigberto Tañada who were among the “Magnificent 12” -- as their supporters called them – who voted to kick the U.S. bases out of the Philippines 24 years ago. Today, these 12 senators are now referred to as the “Dirty Dozen.” Indeed, times are changing.

Supreme Court ruling When the Supreme Court circulated the draft of the ponencia penned by Chief Justice Lourdes Sereno last November, the Senate immediately passed Resolution 1414 introduced by Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago, which says that any treaty should be concurred in by the Senate otherwise it becomes “invalid and ineffective.” However, the U.S. and Philippine governments have always insisted that EDCA is an executive agreement, not a treaty.

Fourteen senators voted to adopt the resolution. Only Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV voted against it while Senate President Franklin Drilon and Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile abstained.

It’s ironic that Enrile, who was one of the “Magnificent 12,” had abstained this time around, which makes one wonder: Did he finally realize the folly of his action in 1991?

Indeed, had he voted for retention of the U.S. bases then – a notion that might have swirled in his mind today -- China would have stayed out of the Spratly Islands.

Nevertheless, in spite of the “invalid and ineffective” language of Resolution 1414, the Supreme Court went ahead and voted 10-4 on Sereno’s ponencia.

Justices Estela Perlas-Bernabe, Arturo Brion, Teresita LeonardoDe Castro and Marvic Leonen dissented while Justice Francis Jardeleza inhibited.

In his concurring opinion to the court’s ruling, Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio said that EDCA’s provisions that allow the prepositioning of U.S. war materiel and equipment in Philippine military bases would “give teeth” to the U.S.Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT). “With the EDCA, China will think twice before attacking Philippine military resupply ships to Philippineoccupied islands in the Spratlys.

With the EDCA, the Philippines will have a fighting chance to hold on to Philippine-occupied islands in the Spratlys,” he said.

Containing China With EDCA in place, the Philippines can now play an important role in preventing Chinese expansionism in the IndoAsia-Pacific region that spans more than 12,000 miles across the globe – from the coast of East Africa to the shores of California.

The Philippines, which was the weakest link in the First Island Chain that forms the first line of defense against Chinese intrusion into the Pacific Ocean, is now going to be a fortified 1,100-mile “retaining wall” against China’s “nine-dash line” -- which U.S. Admiral Harry Harris calls the “Berlin Wall of the Sea” -- that runs parallel to the Philippines’ 12-mile territorial boundary and the First Island Chain. And at both ends of that retaining wall are the Bashi Channel in the Batanes Islands in the north and the TawiTawi Strait in the Sulu archipelago in the south. It’s no surprise then that the U.S. has requested access

to Batanes Island and the Laoag Airport in Ilocos Norte where movements in the Bashi Channel could be monitored, and blocked if a conflict with China occurs.

Whoever controls the Bashi Channel, Tawi-Tawi Strait, and the Miyako Channel – a major choke point that connects the East China Sea to the Pacific Ocean – would control the First Island Chain; thus, containing China to the confines of the South and East China Seas.

It’s also been reported in the news that the existing Philippine naval facility at Oyster Bay, Palawan is being developed into a “mini Subic.” Oyster Bay, which is only 100 miles from the Spratly Islands, is the Philippine Navy’s sole base facing the South China Sea and the staging point to the Kalayaan Islands that includes the populated Pag-Asa Island.

In the previous week, three important events happened that gave the U.S. a geopolitical victory over China in Asia-Pacific, to wit: (1) The resolution of the “comfort women” issue between Japan and South Korea; (2) The election of pro-independence Tsai Ing-wen as Taiwan’s next president; and (3) The Philippine Supreme Court’s ruling on the constitutionality of EDCA. With America’s military alliances with South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Australia, and Singapore secured, President Obama’s “Pivot to Asia” strategy is finally paying off, which solidified the position of the U.S. as a Pacific power.

And with EDSA in place, a new strategic partnership between the U.S. and the Philippines is created; thus, providing a safety net for the Philippines to protect her sovereignty and territorial integrity.

he year went by so fast.

Was it only last week when we were mowing the lawn?

Now the lawn mower is out of sight and so with the lawn! It’s white all over. Well, before saying goodbye to 2015, let’s have a review of the year that was. Here below are the newsmakers in Canada, the Philippines and around the world.

January • Target Department Store, 2nd biggest retailer in the US next to Walmart, shut down all stores in Canada only 22 months after its grand opening.

• Two Islamic extremist brothers armed with assault rifles forced their way into the office of a French newspaper in Paris called Charlie Hebdo. They shot 12 people and injured many others. Authorities cornered and killed the suspects three days after.

• Pope Francis visited the Philippines. A record breaker attendance of 6 million people attended the mass he officiated in Manila. He then proceeded to Tacloban to visit the Yolanda survivors.

• The Mamasapano Clash or the massacre of the 44 police officers in Maguindanao dominated the news in the Philippines. The “Fallen 44” who were killed by the Bangsamoro/Moro Islamic military groups, belonged to the elite group called Special Action Force (SAF) of the Philippine National Police (PNP). The mission was to capture or kill one of FBI’s most wanted terrorists. The operation was a huge failure, it is dubbed as the biggest loss of government elite force in history.

February • The case of foreign worker Vicky Venancio was all over the news in Edmonton. Vicky was hit by a car in 2013 on her way to work at McDonald’s. The accident injured

her very bad, she was left paralyzed from the waist down. Her work permit had expired. Her lawyer appealed that she be allowed to stay for humanitarian grounds so she can avail of treatment and therapy.

The issue created a heated debate among Canadians as some want her deported.

• The “Fallen 44” continued to dominate the news in the Philippines.

March • Singapore’s founder and one of the greatest world leaders, Lee Kuan Yew, died on March 22nd.

His death made international news.

• Germanwings passenger jet carrying at least 150 people crashed in a remote area of the French alps.

No survivor. The co-pilot believed to have deliberately crashed the plane, received psychiatric treatment in the past for depression.

April • At least 147 people, mostly students, were killed in a university in Kenya in an assault by extreme Islamists.

The four gunmen committed suicide when their vests exploded.

• A petition to oust Consul Esmeralda Agbulos ended up in CBC-Edmonton news. The consul is accused of inefficiency.

• The provincial election campaign dominated the news in Alberta.

The four parties – Progressive Conservatives (PC), New Democratic Party (NDP), Liberal Party (LP) and Wildrose – debated on how to repair the province’s ailing economy from oil crisis.

• A 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, near the capital of Kathmandu. It killed over 9,000 people and injured more than 23,000.

May • Manny Pacquiao lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a boxing match in Las Vegas dubbed as “The Fight of the Century.”

• Rachel Notley won as Premier of Alberta. The NDP ended the PC’s 44 years rule in the province.

June • Constable Daniel Woodall, an Edmonton police officer killed while serving an arrest warrant, was honoured in a regimental funeral.

He was given a 3-kilometer procession from the Alberta Legislature to the Shaw Conference Center.

• Vancouver became the first city in Canada to license medical marijuana.

• Tiffany Grace Uy landed front page of newspapers in the Philippines. She graduated Summa Cum Laude in BS Biology at the University of the Philippines with a weighted average grade of 1.004, the highest in the university’s history since WWII. She became a media sensation but controversial at the same time, as others claim she is not full-blooded Filipino.

December • First batch of Syrian refugees arrived in Canada. They were greeted by our Prime Minister himself.

• Typhoon Nona with a maximum wind of about 200 km/hr hit the country and left properties in Northern Samar totally wrecked.

• Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach was crowned as Miss Universe amidst controversy and confusion when the emcee made an error in announcing Miss Colombia as the winner. Pia ended the country’s 42 years “Miss Universe drought.”

Robredo vows to be a hard-working VP regardless of who wins the Presidency VP aspirant, Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo promised that she will apply the same amount of hard work and commitment to her job if ever she gets elected as VP, whoever wins the presidential seat.

Robredo said, if elected as VP, she she would perform her duties as best as she could, be it her running mate Mar Roxas, Jejomar Binay, Grace Poe and other presidential candidates.

To My Fellow Citizens and Neighbours, My uncle died as a result of an unsolved homicide. He was a convenience store clerk, putting in long hours to ensure he could achieve his own Canadian dream - until one night someone robbed his store and shot him, and took that dream away. I was 17 at the time, and his homicide and the resulting community action had a profound impact on my life.

When someone asks me why I am running, it is because I saw the way our community can come together and fight for justice through grassroots initiatives like the Mill Woods Crime Council. I saw that a tight-knit community and strong leadership can go a long way to making healthy and vibrant neighbourhoods. I will ensure that this community--the community I was born in and which I have lived in my whole life--continues to build and strengthen this fabric.

I learned quickly that politics and civic engagement is the most effective way to enact change. I was fortunate to work and spend time with the late PC MLA Manmeet Singh Bhullar in his ministry office. He was my mentor, someone I looked up to and hoped to emulate. I learned a lot about being a strong voice and presence for the community, to stand up for what is right, to hold those in power accountable, and to ensure that the wishes and needs of the people are met.

We are all residents of this city, we want to see it succeed – we need it to succeed. That means building the LRT and expanding

bus service, while remaining accountable and respecting taxpayers. This is what Manmeet taught me, that we need to have a bold vision and build for it, while also ensuring that it is done with strong fiscal management and transparency.

I have the necessary political experience. I started as an Executive on the PC Mill Creek Riding Association, and being involved with the PC Youth of Alberta while I was studying business at MacEwan University.

In 2013 I was the youngest Vice

President in the PC Party Board of Directors’ history when I became the VP Outreach for the party. These experiences, and the relationships I built across the political spectrum, have taught me how government works, and the value of diplomacy and getting things done.

Consistency, persistence and trust – these are values which you can expect of me.

That is why I am now standing here asking for your vote. There are a lot of candidates in this by-election. Many of them

US to fund Philippine camps under EDCA The US congress has allotted 66 million USD for the building of 8 military camps in the Philippines under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) as stated by US Ambassador to the Philippines, Philip Goldberg yesterday during e media forum.

“Let me point out that we have about $66 million in foreign military funding in process for the Philippines and we expect that there will be additional sources of funds for both carrying out EDCA to military construction funds and also to increases in what we call the maritime security initiative,” Goldberg said at the Pandesal Forum in Quezon City.

“So we will work through all of those figures and also working with our Congress, which of course you have to deal with as well in terms of what the Philippines may bring to the table,” he added.

The ambassador also made it clear that the US will not construct a new military base under EDCA.

orn on November 5, in Sta. Cruz, Manila, 70 years ago.

The eldest among the three children of Mr. Jose Magpayo and Mrs. Aurea Gavino. He spent his youthful years enjoying life to be fullest. Growing up, his life was not always an easy one being born to a liberated couple, who separated paths in his early childhood. He learned to be independent and self-reliant by nature. He worked his way through school, was an achiever, excelled academically but due to his exuberance he was not so competitive.

After secondary school from C.M. Recto High School,, he attended the University of the East whereafter he held a Bachelor's Degree of Business Management, Public and Media Relations Coursework and finished MBO Management by Objective: Business Management in Asian Institute of Management in Makati, Philippines.

Jose "Pepito" Magpayo was married to Cecilia Tijam, an Ilonga beauty and a UP College of Agriculture student in Los Banos, Laguna when they first met through Cecilia's brother who was a band member then. The third child in the brood of eleven children of Mr. Enrico Rosal Tijam and Mrs. Avelina Sorongon. They got married in 1967 and were blessed with six children, five boys and a princess. As life goes with their love story and a happy family they now have 21 loving grandchildren, in total.

In the mid-1990's, they decided to migrate in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Jose "Pepito" Magpayo brought with him his portfolio of achievements with high hopes and expectations of a better future for his family. He's a standout in any crowd, cultivated his personality as he is known to be the life of the party.

As a starter, being a new immigrant, he sent as many as 200 resumes to different companies where he either over qualified for the position he is applying for or he needed to have Canadian experience.

finding his way to fit in to the workplace was unraveling in front of him. Until somebody gave him a chance to be a part of their team,his first job was a parking attendant all throughout the cold winter months.

After he obtained training and worked as a travel agent for over a year and consistently persevered, making positive impressions to the company owner, the owner sold to him one of his four travel agencies, Airline Ticket Centre. Quite befitting, Pepito had always managed to employ himself and has always found success in calling his own shots.

In 2001, he started the publication of the first Filipino Calgary newspaper, Bayanihan News which tremendously benefited the Filipino community. He earned friendships and detractors.

In 2003, after suffering from a mild stroke, he decided to take action on his most passionate dream - TV Productions which he pursued relentlessly. By 2005, he had founded and established the Philippine Media Society of Alberta, a non-profit, family oriented operation and TV Pilipino went into production through Shaw TV's Multicultural Channel.

TV Pilipino is On Air as well as "in the air" at all community events and Calgary landmarks such as The Calgary Stampede and Globalfest every year since. He had become a go-to-guy for aspiring entrepreneurs seeking success in the media field resulting in a few other Filipino print, radio, television and social media publications being conceived.

In 2008, OMNI Diversity petitioned Pepito in throwing a pitch to Rogers Broadcasting's Ethnic Division. Working side by side with Calgary officers in implementing an Alberta movement while kicking in doors at the Toronto Head Office, so to speak. Eventually securing permanent residence in OMNI's Ethnic Programming roster under, TV FILIPINO. In one way or another, community leaders of their respective associations benefited from his assistance in promoting their cause

as well as several Filipino smallbusinesses through sponsorship and article features. Although, PhilMeSo and TV Filipino productions were mainly family operated and executed, Pepito took in anyone with the will to enter "ShowBiz" with an open mind and a caring heart. Some have decided to venture out on their own while others have remained right behind him whom he treated as part of his own family.

For over ten long years, he faithfully and continuously served the Filipino community not only in Alberta but also in BC as a media personality. He was awarded in the State of Hawaii Legislature's UEAA Hawaii Chapter as the most Outstanding Alumnus in 2015, presenting him the Lualhati Award.

As a downside of being a workaholic, his health conditions changed dramatically. Along with his blood and heart conditions, medications for Diabetes have taken away most of his kidney functions.

At-home Dialysis was not an excuse for him to be idle as he kept working hard on his sickbed. His spirit remained high as his organs were deteriorating. He fought hard and refused to be disabled from his media obligations to the Filipino communities of Alberta.

Late evening on the 3rd of December, 2015, he was rushed to Foothills Hospital Emergency by ambulance after complications with his breathing. Inevitably, he diagnosis was Pulmonary Fibrosis after fluids have flooded into his lungs. His respiratory system has come to a complete shut down forcing his family to carry on the traditions of Noche Buena right in his hospital room. As saddening as the Holidays have become, his wife, Cecille and the rest of the family stood strong right beside him as he departed @3:37 a.m on December 27th, 2015.

It was a shock for the entirety of the community to hear the heartbreaking news. Many argued that his physical appearance did not give out the slightest hint but collectively agreed that he has

finally been relieved of his sufferings brought upon by his health situation.

He never seemed to have taken a break from working but he needed to rest. It has been a long battle. It is hard to let go but the time has come to bid goodbye.

In the event of Pepito's demise, the Filipino community in Canada had lost a man of greatness who passionately shared his wisdom to others and has served as an inspiration to countless Filipinos. He entrusted PhiMeSo and TV Filipino operations to his bereaved wife, Cecille; daugther, Anna; and youngest sons, Angelo and Jose Daniel to fulfill and continue his legacy.

The time when Pepito joined the Alberta Filipino Journal - by Rod Cantiveros As envisioned by the late Rosalinda Natividad Cantiveros, editor-in-chief of the Manitoba Filipino Journal, the plan to expand to Alberta had been postponed for many years for various reasons. As there was some kinds of market tests, for many years, as myself and my cousin Jose L. Angeles, Jr, advised that it would take more years before a community paper would be introduced to Edmonton, Alberta. Filipino businesses had not been actively flourishing. As years gone by, Alberta's economy had become a perfect balancing act.

Filipino community was growing up and many Filipino businesses were established. And in 2008, after Linda's passing, my cousin and I developed a plan to start the Alberta edition of the Filipino Journal.

And Linda's dream to expand to the west became a reality.

community was the target but later on, we decided to expand to Calgary where the Filipino community was thriving. And we needed someone to handle the editorial and the distribution of the Alberta Filipino Journal.

With a close contact, Jun Angeles was able to convince Jose "Pepito" Magpayo to handle the responsibility of gathering and writing the news and advertising clients. And with Pepito's wider knowledge in mass media, he was able to promote the Alberta Filipino Journal. As a man of distinctive rapport and super-charge energy, Pepito was able to plant a deeper roots of the newspaper in Calgary and neighboring towns and cities.

His vast resources of talents among the Filipino Calgarians became a positive spark in harnessing those who have the same vision. His family and his community commitment did a perfect balancing act. He was the inspiration to other people, especially the younger ones.

Pepito was on top of all the events in the community, engaged closely to serve the community thru his broadcast and print media. Armed with inherent talent to lead, he was able to place the newspaper in the highest bar of community paper publishing.

"Kuya Rod, ours is a different kind of paper, and most of the people told me that it is more professionally done. We're number one," he said with smile, with confidence.

A media man whose principle in life had not been tarnished even in times of adversity, even at the point of humbling himself in a difficult situation. And being a visionary man whose influence to the majority of the community had become a sentinel on how the mass media can promote and sustain the common good for the community.

His passing has left a void which cannot be filled, let alone to find a perfect person to fit the shoes he left. For his legacy continues to inspire other people specially the young.

Vic’s says Pauleen is now number 2 in his life Now that they’re married, Vic Sotto related that his wife, Pauleen Luna is number 2 in his life, upped from being number 5 before. But being second priority isn’t something to complain about considering his first is God. The comedian explained in an interview that his old priorities listed Pauleen actually farther down his list, with God as number one; number 2, his children; number 3, his family; number 4, his job; number 5, Pauleen; and Number 6, golf. Vic also revealed he apologized to his children regarding the change in his priorities.

Pauleen and Vic were married on Saturday evening at St. James the Great Parish in Muntinlupa City. The wedding proved detractors wrong about their relationship, mostly stemming from the couple’s 34-year age gap.

Luckily, it was all settled by the Grand Knight. Next was the outdoor procession that required neighbourhood’s attention. Of course, keen observance of the law as set by the City of Edmonton must have been met. That’s why, the organizers had secured the two police cars visible and the medical doctors were also around during the procession. Also the unknown factor of how many would be coming to church on 7PM, Thursday, November 12, 2015 at the St. John the Evangelist Parish.

Fortunately, the event was gifted with a very nice weather. No doubt, that was precisely through Divine Intervention—the Black Nazarene had showered upon His devotees.

According to one tale, Spanish missionaries brought an icon to Manila aboard ship. The ship caught fire, burning the Nazarene.

Despite its condition, the people kept the charred Nazarene for worship. Since then, miraculous things occurred in the place.

West Territories State Council from its inception 2001 for five years! They developed and run programs in youth, council, church, community and family that were outstanding. There are still at least nine past grand knights who are still very much involved in our council activities! I served as their adviser / consultant since 2001.

I always thought by bringing in the statue of Jesus, the Black Nazarene to Edmonton it would stir the religious spirits of the Filipino people who love Jesus Nazareno especially those who could not go home on January 9th year after year. In return, this would be the best gift of Nazareno Knights of Columbus Council to the Edmonton Filipino Catholics!

The Action Plan November 12th that I developed was embraced fully by the Steering Committee.

One of the challenges was to find an excellent finishing carpenter for the carriage and the name of Bro. Chris Villarica was mentioned. Bro. Ferdie Maingat approached him and he agreed.

They developed a carriage sketch which Bro. Chris followed until it was done. Although he was very busy with his daily carpentry job , nevertheless, he finished it in on time and Bro. Ferdie did the finishing touches like staining/ varnishing.

Kudos goes to Grand Knight Robert Croteau, Deputy Grand Knight Rolly Marcos, Deacons Gem Mella and Tony Obleada, and to all our committee members!

They’re awesome because they stuck to the Action Plan!

Volunteer Photographers Wanted Volunteer photographers needed. Build your portfolio or use your expertise to aid the Filipino Journal by photographing special events and concerts. Must have own equipment and transportation. Photo editing skills would be helpful but not required.

The Filipino communities are growing in Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer & Fort McMurray. More & more events being passed along our way, we are looking to complement our team with volunteer photographers to cover all those events.

As with any community newspaper, we focus on local events such as community gatherings, picnics, sporting events, press conferences, dinners. Some gigs can be as quick as 15-20 minutes and other can be long, painful & boring. Our goal is to find photographers that we can assign work to on any given story. The majority of the events are during the evenings and weekend.

As far as compensation is concerned, we’re offering several options and considerations: 1. promotional compensation with photo credits on all photography used in our print and online editions.

3. advertising compensation with supporting photography services ad in our print edition.

4. royalties on any photographs sold through our website (in development).

Experience two other important things that Amsterdam is internationally famous for cheese and windmills. And so we're on our way to the "Jacobs Hoeve" authentic cheese farm by travelling on the lush green meadow lowlands of Katwoude village about 20 minutes north of Amsterdam. After a warm welcome by the friendly staff dressed in traditional Dutch costume we're treated to a professional demonstration of the traditional cheese-making process from milk to finished product and later sample the various unique flavours of cheese. Aside from the world-famous Edam and Gouda cheese the farm also makes sheep and goat cheese.
