n July 29, 2012, the New Hope Fellowship and Mission Ministry held it’s 1st Year Anniversary Celebration at the Blessed Virgin Mary’s Hall, 932 College Avenue in Winnipeg.

the celebration with jubilation.

The dinner was served after the program that was highlighted by a Thanksgiving Mass officiated by Fr, Dindo Pepito. Bro Pol Gamo and Sister Lita Mas emceed the program with Bro Donell

The Blame Lies Not Only on the Fraternity Leaders (On the Accountability and Underlying Reasons in Joining a Fraternity) “The dreams of a freshman law student of San Beda College abruptly, violently ended on a farm in Dasmariñas City.

“Mark Andrei Marcos was the latest fatality in an apparent case of fraternity hazing.

“Police said the bruised body of Marcos, 21, was brought to De La Salle University Medical Center in Dasmariñas City, Cavite province, at 10:30 p.m. on Sunday by two women— identified as Marlen Guadayo and Soledad Sanda—and two unidentified men. Marcos was pronounced dead on Monday.”—Philippine Daily Inquirer, August 1, 2012

hat’s another widely reported casualty of hazing in the Philippines.

According to Wikipedia, “hazing is the practice of various rituals and other activities involving harassment, abuse, or humiliation used as a way of initiating a person into a group.

Hazing is seen in many different types of social groups, including in gangs, sports teams, schools, military units, workplaces, and fraternities.”

Personal Responsibility and Unresolved Issues While I express my condolences to the loved ones of the casualties of fraternity hazing, I will not hold myself from expressing also what I think about those who join fraternities. While I denounce the irresponsibility and powertripping tendencies of many if not all fraternity leaders and favoured members, I think that victims of hazing are responsible as well for what befell them—because the moment they

decided to join a fraternity, they knew that the risk of death or, at the least, getting badly beaten or injured during the initiation rites will always be there.

Yes, peer pressure is also a factor, so as the desire to belong to a faux brotherhood; but I think individuals who join fraternities have some degrees of insecurity and a yearning for power, belonging, and to boost their self-esteem, seeking these in the company of supposedly future brothers.

On the other hand, every blow of the paddle of many if not most fraternity leaders is an expression of their frustrations, repressed negative emotions such as hatred, insecurities, and powertripping.

There are many more worthwhile, more productive, and less risky ways of curing one's insecurities, boosting one's self-esteem, and gaining a sense of power—activities, passions, hobbies, and preoccupations that do not rob a person of his life, dignity, and respectability.

What if I do not have all the necessary documents for an immigration application?

A

nyone looking to immigrate to Canada must supply documents with their application.

All immigration applications come with specific document checklists and if an applicant cannot supply all of documents on that checklist, a satisfactory explanation is needed to explain any discrepancies. If an applicant cannot prove his or her credentials, immigration applications will often be refused. Before putting in any immigration application, potential applicants should carefully consider what they need to do if they do not have all of the documentation

required on immigration document checklists.

In November 2011, the federal court decided the case of Abdulaziz Ali. In this case, Mr. Ali's application was refused because of concerns the visa officer had about his education, work experience and other aspects of his application.

Do I have to put in evidence of a bachelor’s degree if I have a master’s degree?

With respect to his educational credentials, Mr. Ali failed to follow the instructions on immigration’s document checklist. In particular, he

1,000 Reasons for a Plastic-Bag Ban in Winnipeg

T

he City of Toronto recent ban on plastic (shopping) bag boldly opened the floodgates to Canada’s minor towns to its major cities that are still on the reflective mode on whether or not to adopt their respective version of banning plastic-bag use. For, while it is not the first Canadian town/city to embrace the ban, Toronto is Canada’s first major city that embraced it. To a Winnipegger, it then raises this obvious and clear-cut question: If a major business city like Toronto has adopted a plastic-bag ban, why can’t a minor business city like Winnipeg?

Compound such question, of course, to this rudimentary question: If a town in Manitoba (Leaf Rapids) was the first-ever town in Canada to implement the ban, why has Toronto implemented it and Winnipeg (Manitoba’s main city) has not?

While the city government of Winnipeg has, time and again, explored and flirted with the idea of adopting a ban on the use of plastic bags, it seems to move the wheels of change slowly—if not in the wrong direction. It has been half a decade since Leaf Rapids implemented the ban and since the Winnipeg city council started debating on the idea.

If the roadblock to the implementation of the ban is the lack of sufficient reason, there is actually a plethora of reasons that would fairly justify the implementation.

1) Environmental cause – the implementation of the ban shall be Winnipeg’s noble share in the global initiative to reduce damage to the environment brought about by plastic litters. Also, it might

When the visa officer reviewed the file, the officer became suspicious because of a number of discrepancies between the photocopied transcript and the university's letter.

When asked about these discrepancies, Mr. Ali claimed that some of the discrepancies were as a result original documents that were lost in a fire. Mr. Ali told immigration that he tried to get the documents he needed from the university but the university never responded. When the visa officer asked if Mr. Ali kept any of his emails to the university requesting a transcript, he said that he did not.

Because appropriate transcripts were not enclosed, the judge said that the visa officer was entitled to make a decision that proper documentation was not submitted by Mr. Ali to substantiate his education claim. As a result, his application was denied.

An interesting side note in this case was that Mr. Ali obtained a master’s degree from a U.S. university. In his case, Mr. Ali

argued that he must have had a valid bachelor's degree otherwise he would not have received a master's degree from a U.S. university. Although Mr. Ali tried to argue this, the judge said that the visa officer was entitled to obtain the required information from the bachelor's degree. As a result, even if an applicant has obtained a master's degree or Ph.D., it is still necessary to enclose diplomas and transcripts from undergraduate and graduate studies.

What happens if I do not submit work reference letters?

On the issue of his work experience, Mr. Ali failed to provide objective evidence of work experience from a number of his previous employers. In this connection, the judge noted that Mr. Ali not only failed to provide reference letters, he also failed to provide other objective evidence outlining his work experience such as T-4 slips (for his work in Canada) and W-2 slips (for his work in the U.S.).

August 5 - 20, 2012 Finally, Mr. Ali argued that he should have been given a chance to respond to the visa officer's concerns regarding his missing documents.

The judge rejected this argument saying that if the requirements to provide certain documents are clear, a visa officer does not have to give an applicant to address those concerns.

In addition, the judge said that visa officers do not have to give applicants any additional time in this regard as it was Mr. Ali's responsibility to put his best case forward.

Of course, it would give a good reputation to Winnipeggers—if it could be done.

s expected, the latest charmer of Cirque du Soleil’s “Quidam” has become a hit in their 4-day stint at the RBC Theatre at MTS Centre!

Billed as one of the darkest shows of Cirque du Soleil, “Quidam” is a story of a young girl named Zoe who is living in an imaginary world of Quidam and wants to escape reality.

Our kababayan, Ardee Dionisio, takes the role of Target who accompanies the lead character Zoe through the imaginary world of Quidam as her guide, friend and a happy-go-lucky companion.

The two-hour show captures the imagination of the young people and the adults by their colorful costumes, theatrical makeup and the flawless performances of all talented members of the circus. The repertoire has elevated the professionalism of the performers and its flawless executions of their difficult routines. So many spellbinding routines left the audience with awe and fascination. There is no boring numbers because of its continual show of dexterity and execution, par excellence.

Yes, Cirque du Soleil got talents and hundreds of them are all over the world. And in the Winnipeg presentation, Ardee Dionisio is a lucky kababayan who has been all over the massive stage performing his routine while accompanying, toying, cavorting with the lead character, Zoe. His costume, make-up, and acting are

perfect for the show. Ardee does it with so much gusto and his professionalism is at ease. He is so fluid and convincing in his role as Target!

And because of these talented artists, par execellence, every Cirque du Soleil show is a total new experience ever imagined and seen by children and adults all over the world.

Just go to Las Vegas and almost all the 5-Star Hotels have been showcasing the group’s extraordinary program. When I was in Las Vegas in 2009, for my own curiosity and excitements, I went to see the adult show of Circle du Soleil at New York New York. “Zummanity” was a total sold out, and it was jampacked with international tourists. The show transported us into a colorful and an exciting nudist camp!

When they presented a soldout show in the Philippines lately, the management felt the warmth welcome of our kababayans. And there is a plan to open a branch of Cirque du Soleil in the Philippines where talented artists are available!

Before and after the show, the Filipino Journal staff and volunteers were able to see and to talk to Ardee. He welcomed us at backstage. The stage is so massive and the props are well-stored and coordinated. We met some of the artists who welcomed us with their smiles.

If Cirque du Soleil comes again to Winnipeg, do not miss the show especially if Ardee Dionisio will be one of the charmers!

(A Tribute to Some Pioneering Comedians of Philippine Showbusiness)

L

aughter is the best medicine; and for many decades, Philippine cinema has been healing the masses with its share of remarkable comedians. Since the 1950s, a great number of Filipino actors and actresses have etched their names in the annals of Philippine comedy. The following are among the most notable.

Dolphy: King of Comedy In real life, Dolphy was Rodolfo Vera Quizon Sr. (1928–2012). He was born in Pampanga and grew up in Tondo, Manila. Started as a struggling stage performer, he was soon discovered by the late actor Fernando Poe Sr. He first appeared in the movie Dugo at Bayan (I Remember Bataan) (1946, Palaris Films), starring Fernando Poe and Patricia Mijares; but the movie in which his comedic talent finally stood out was Sa Isang Sulyap Mo, Tita (1953, Sampaguita Pictures), starring Pancho Magalona and Tita Durán.

Soon after, Dolphy was starring in an average of eight films per year, the earliest and most memorable of which included Jack and Jill (1953, Sampaguita Pictures), with Rogelio de la Rosa and Lolita Rodriguez; Captain Barbell (1964, D’Lanor / FPJ Productions), with Bob Soler; The 7 Faces of Dr. Sibago (1966, Paraiso Productions); Pepe en Pilar (1966, RR Productions), with Susan Roces; Facifica Falayfay (1969, RVQ Productions), with Panchito,

Pilar Pilapil, and Rod Navarro; Ang Tatay Kong Nanay (1978, Lotus Films), with Niño Muhlach; and Facundo Alitaftaf (1978, Regal Films), with Lotis Key and Trixia Gomez. Dolphy has also been prolific as a television star—he was the lead character, John Puruntong, in John en Marsha (1973–1990, RPN), the longest-running comedy sitcom in the Philippines in the 1980s; and Kevin Cosme in Home along da Riles (1992–2003, ABS-CBN). Dolphy’s having acted in hundreds of movies, one of the last of which was 2010’s Father Jejemon, had shown his impressive longevity and prolificacy as an actor.

In 2009, Dolphy was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, resulting to the slowing down of his acting career and the deterioration of his health and frequent admission to the hospital.

He finally succumbed to the complications of the disease on July 10, 2012. He was 83.

My late maternal grandfather, Conrado Lanuza Vera Sr., used to tell me that Dolphy was a distant relative of ours on the Vera side of our clan; I am yet to confirm if this is true. In 2008, I’m glad that I was able to meet Dolphy and many of his children and grandchildren—whom included Eric, Jeffrey, Ronnie, Boy2, and Vandolph—when they staged a show in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, where I live. Panchito: The King’s Sidekick Alfonso D. Tagle Sr. in real life (1925–1995), Panchito was best known as Dolphy’s sidekick especially during the latter’s early acting days. Panchito was a son of the Filipina actress Etang Discher.

His prominent big nose was his trademark. His career in showbusiness started in 1942 when he joined a ‘bodabil’ troupe (Philippine version of vaudeville). Panchito’s first movie appearance was—like Dolphy’s—in Sa Isang Sulyap Mo, Tita. His tandem with Dolphy became a massive hit that the pair went on to team up in over 50 movies—which extended to television sitcoms. Perhaps the most memorable of these Dolphy-Panchito movies were Kalabog en Bosyo (1959, Sampaguita Pictures), Beatnik (1960, Sampaguita Pictures), Si Lucio at si Miguel (1962, Sampaguita Pictures), Pepe en Pilar (1966), Fefita Fofonggay (1973, RVQ Productions), Bugoy (1979, Hemisphere Pictures), Max en Jess (1980, Four-N Films), and Bakit Kinagat ni Adan ang Mansanas ni Eba? (1988, RVQ Productions). In November 1995, Panchito suffered a stroke which left him comatose until his demise in the month that followed.

Chiquito’s last movie appearance was in Strict ang Parents Ko (1997, Neo Films), with Amanda Page. He died of liver cancer in the same year.

The Last Leaf No matter how sad or difficult our lives are unfolding in some stages, we must still try to laugh. In such cases, nothing is perhaps more therapeutic than a dose of laughter.

So, if you ever have the chance to get hold of a copy of any of the movies of such talented comedians and comediennes of Philippine cinema, take time to watch it. To those like me who grew up in the Philippines, our very own comedy films will surely be effective in curing us of our sadness and most especially of our homesickness. But, of course, we may also watch them even in happy times.

Chiquito: Prince of Spoofs Chiquito was Augusto V. Pangan Sr. in real life (1932–1997).

He started his career in entertainment at the age of 13, appearing in a major musical production at Manila Grand Opera House—the center of Philippine culture and the venue for plays, movies, and musicals prior to the construction of Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1969. Chiquito also became popular in the bodabil circuit for his dancing skills.

His friend Fernando Poe Sr. was the one who helped him start a career in movie, the first of which was Sanggano (1947, Palaris Films).

Giant Chess Set Returns to Garden City Shopping Centre

A

fter a fourteen year absence, the giant chess set that once graced the mall at Garden City Shopping Centre made its triumphant return earlier this month.

Garden City Shopping Centre once featured a popular ‘Chess Square’ with large wooden pieces in a recessed pit located near the former Eaton’s department store.

The pit was removed as part of the mall’s expansion project in 1998 to make way for the addition of

the Canadian Tire and Winners stores.

The new game will feature a durable plastic set with 36” tall king pieces and a flexible mat that can be easily transported.

It will be dedicated to the late Daniel Abraham (Abe) Yanofsky, who was Canada’s first chess grandmaster and former mayor of West Kildonan. City Archives will be displaying personal and professional artifacts from Yanofsky's life near the unveiling site.

GMA News honors national hero Filipino fans greet Jessica Sanchez during skype birthday party via special DVD

he GMA News and Public Affairs honored last year’s 150th birth anniversary of our national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal by releasing a special DVD titled “Rizal: 150 Taon ng Pambansang Bayani.”

The DVD contains the most notable documentaries and specials on the life and works of the national hero including his travels and loves while in Europe, an intriguing secret of the Rizal family in Calamba, the stories

ilipino fans presented a tearyeyed Jessica Sanchez with a birthday cake during a Skype party held at SM Megamall on July 29.

The American Idol finalist, whose birthday falls on Aug. 4, was also crooned to with “Maligayang Bati” by the fans through the 10-minute interaction.

Jessica was in Los Angeles where she had just flown in while hundreds of fans gathered at the Megamall for the interface via the most popular voice communication service in the world.

Besides greeting their idol on her upcoming birthday, fans and

local media were also able to ask the Filipino-Mexican singer with interesting questions like how she is off the camera, her coming album, her inspirations, the importance of music in her life, and even her advice to those who want to follow her footsteps.

oung actress Kathryn Bernardo admitted she is quite “close” with 17year heartthrob Daniel Padilla.

Kathryn recently joined the young actor-singer off camera when she participated in the recent Star Magic Games as muse of the Red Team together with Julia Montes. Daniel meanwhile played as a member of one of the participating basketball teams.

Both young talents are contract artists of Star Magic and ABS-CBN, and currently star together in the primetime series “Princess and I”. Kathryn plays the main protagonist “Mikay”

opposite Daniel who plays “Gino.”

The son of actor Rommel and singer Karla Estrada, Daniel is a recipient of the Gold Record Award for the outstanding sales of his debut self-titled album, “Daniel Padilla.”

Star Cinema is already lining up a film for the two as entry for the 38th Metro Manila Film Festival. The movie is tentatively titled, “Sistereka” and also stars Vice Ganda and Kris Aquino.

Cory’s kids to lead unveiling of people power icon’s bust

resident Benigno Aquino and his sisters privately commemorated the third death anniversary of their mother, former President Corazon “Cory” Aquino by being at her gravesite at the Manila Memorial Park.

The former president died on Aug. 1, 2009, after a battle with colon cancer.

A media advisory said there will be a 5 p.m. Mass at Our Lady of Edsa Shrine

Most Rev. Gabriel Reyes, bishop of the diocese of Antipolo City. The Mass is open to the public.

Afterwards the president and his siblings lead the unveiling of their mother’s bust and open a mini photo exhibit at the Edsa Shrine.

spokesperson Edwin Lacierda cited Cory Aquino’s contributions to the restoration of democracy through peaceful means following the fall of the Marcos dictatorship in 1986.

The statement also recognized her important role in the nation’s history as wife, mother and President, while exemplifying the virtues of faith, perseverance and integrity.

The statement further mentioned her determination to defend and nurture democratic institutions and the principles she and millions of Filipinos helped restore and rebuild.

Do we know who our Farmer is?

F

arming is a Filipino tradition.

It's part of the reason why previous generations had big families and a strong sense of community - we worked together on our common goal of feeding each other nutritious organically grown food.

Although I am not a farmer, I do know a little about growing food. This spring, I developed an acre of garden in the RM of Portage la Prairie. We are growing a wide variety of vegetables.

For my wife, kids and I, tending this garden is a chance to spend quality time together; and has proven to be a relaxing and rejuvinating experience.

And of course, we now enjoy great organic produce!

In Canada, farming is dominated by large conventional farming enterprises. When you drive along the highway, you see acres of wheat, canola, and corn for miles and miles. The days of the small family farm are fading fast. We know less and less where our food comes from or who grows it. Shouldn’t we know who our farmer is? Afterall, we know who our doctor is, who our dentist is.

We ought to know our farmer as well.

Across rural Manitoba, there are a several small scale organic farmers making a living growing nutritious, organic produce, meat, and eggs that are free of pesticides, herbicidies, synthetic fertilizers, and other nasty

Ever since we were little, we were taught that the ideal destiny was to be Barbie girls living in a Barbie world.

Lady Skits is a series of hilarious scenes filled with witty lines that will leave you laughing even when you feel you shouldn't be. It is vulgar, satirical, and extremely well-written. Lady Skits persists of four women and several mime boxes; they use a simple layout to create such a dynamic show.

I would definitely recommend this show for those who are 18 and older. I took my mother (who is a traditional, conservative, Filipino woman) to see the show and she thoroughly enjoyed it. We attended the first show so of course, there were some rough patches, but I have no doubt they'll only improve from here. This show has it all: rap, dance, drama, comedy, sensitivity, and harsh truths.

Before attending the show, make sure you brush up on your Greek mythology and Shakespeare in order to fully understand their references. Lady Skits puts a bold twist on modern feminism.

Saint Martin/Sint Maarten, "The Friendly Island" "The Friendly Island", Saint Martin/Sint Maarten, shared by the French Republic and the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the northeast Caribbean approximately 190 miles from Puerto Rico, has been famous for hundred of years dating back to 1648 for being the smallest area of land in the world (87 sq. kms.) divided into two nations with no border patrols or customs between them.

About 41,000 people live in Sint Maarten, the southern Dutch side and 36,000 in Saint Martin on the northern French side with Philipsburg and Marigot as capitals, respectively.

We love Sint Maarten/Saint Martin - simply because of its uniqueness of being half-Dutch and half-French, with its dual cultural heritage allowing the visitors/tourists the opportunity to enjoy a variety of lifestyles whether its food, music, art, and communications. Although halfDutch and half-French, English is the dominant language. As its currency, Saint Martin uses the euro while Sint Maarten uses the Netherlands guilder although

almost every shop, store or restaurant accepts the US$ and all major credit cards.

The Oasis of the Seas docked at the AC Wathey Pier of Philipsburg on a beautiful April morning with the ship's gangway opened at 7:30 and we immediately disembarked to start our guided tour of the island.

The capital of Sint Maarten has three main streets parallel to the water. The first is the street along the beach with a boardwalk meandering between shops and the beach lined with hotels. Next is the cobblestoned Front Street with duty free shops, jewelry stores and boutiques most of which offer a free drink - a taste of local specialty : an exotic cocktail made with the native rum-based guavaberry liquor. The Courthouse, a grand white wooden structure topped with a copula, is the most prominent landmark at Front Street. Across from the Courthouse is the busy Wathey Square, a lovely spot to stroll.

The third street, Back Street, is the main street for the local black population.

Still within the city we viewed the once great salt ponds where salt used to be harvested by the early Dutch settlers and sent by shiploads to Europe. The island, before it was discovered

by Christopher Columbus, used to be called Island Svalugia or land of the salt by the first inhabitants of the island called the Arawaks, a tribe of Amerindians who migrated northward from South America.

Our tour continued through the Orleans region as we enjoyed the view of Orient Beach and the neighbouring islands. Passing through Grand Case area we reached the French capital, Marigot, for a free time browsing the unique boutiques and the colourful open-air markets set along the wharves on Blvd. de France offering an array of homegrown produce, tropical fruits, spices, and freshly caught fish. Across the market are the Lolo`s featuring arts, crafts and local restaurants. And towering over us and rising from the centre of Saint Martin stands Pic Paradis (Paradise Peak), the highest point in the entire island.

With colonial houses standing beside small cafes and bistros, pastry shops and luxury boutiques, the capital city of Marigot is perhaps the most French in spirit of all the cities in the Caribbean.

Before sunset after a brief stop at the International Lookout Point we rejoined our coach for journey back to Oasis passing a landmark monument to indicate we were on the Dutch side once again.

Can MMA work as an Olympic Sport?

The 2012 Olympics are here and athletes are competing for gold in many sports that make up Mixed Martial Arts. To be a true MMA competitor you need to train in boxing and wrestling while judo has shown to be a very valuable weapon as well. To a certain extent, Tae Kwon Do is also useful to a cage fighter. All of these sports are part of the Olympics, so any fan of MMA would have to wonder, can it work as an Olympic sport?

There are many aspects of MMA that would work in an Olympic setting. Like fighters from

different countries for example.

Canada has a particularity strong roster of fighters like George St. Pierre and Rory McDonald. As does Brazil, Japan and of course the USA. However, MMA as we know it in the UFC, will not work in the Olympics in its current form. It’s most likely too sensationalized and too violent.

First thing to do would be to move the fight from the cage to the ring. To those not familiar with MMA, a cage could represent barbaric tones and would be a turn off. While a ring would be more familiar as one is already used

Typhoon ‘Gener’ killed 12 people

yphoon “Gener” caused the death of at least 12 people and triggered flooding and landslides in Luzon and parts of Visayas and Mindanao as it moves northward at a slow pace of 7 kilometers per hour.

According to the National Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the typhoon with international codename Saola, also displaced more than 32, 000 families and affected a total of 63,670 families in six regions in Luzon, two in Visayas and three in Mindanao.

Several areas also remain flooded in Metro Manila, Cagayan Valley, Ilocos region, Central Luzon, and Soccsksargen. .In other parts of Luzon, a state of calamity has been declared in the municipalities of Mabitac in Laguna,

Bacoor, Tanza, and Ternate in Cavite, and Obando in Bulacan.

The typhoon’s center was estimated at 270 kilometers northeast of Basco, Batanes, packing maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 150 kph. The

weather agency PAGASA hoisted public storm warning signal No. 2 over Batanes Group of Islands, Calayan Group of Islands and Babuyan Group of Islands. Signal No. 1 is up over the rest of Cagayan province and Apayao.

“Gener” is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility on Thursday or Friday.

Fixx Me with Your Secret Reformation

he Fixx is a British band that became popular during the peak of New Wave music in the 1980s for the singles "Red Skies," "Secret Separation," and "One Thing Leads to Another."

The band disappeared from the commercial radar as the 1990s loomed, just like many other New Wave bands before and after them; but unbeknownst to many, The Fixx has released albums in the ensuing decades.

Now, The Fixx is back with an album of new materials—with the classic lineup of Cy Curnin (lead vocals), Rupert Greenall (keyboards), Jamie West-Oram (guitar), Adam Woods (drums), and Dan K. Brown (bass). Entitled Beautiful Friction, this album is their first since 2003.

The first single off Beautiful Friction is “Anyone Else,” which sounds unmistakably New Wave— owing to the repetitive staccato guitar melody in the intro, the slow buildup of the rest of the instruments, the synth sound in the background, and the distinct vocals that conjure a nostalgic image of familiar red skies.

Other songs from the album that I personally liked are “Just before Dawn,” “What God?”, “Second Time

Around,” and “Follow That Cab.” The overall music of The Fixx shares a similar feel with that of fellow New Wave bands like U2, Simple Minds, and Babybird.

The complete studio-album discography of The Fixx is as follows: Shuttered Room (1982), Reach the Beach (1983), Phantoms (1984), Walkabout (1986), Calm Animals (1988), Ink (1991), Elemental (1998), 1011 Woodland (1999), Want That Life (2003), and Beautiful Friction (2012).

After recruiting additional members, they changed their name to The Fix; then became The Fixx through the suggestion of the recording company that signed them—to dissociate the band’s name from the drug innuendo of the word ‘fix.’

I admit, my knowledge about this band back during the New Wave heyday in the 1980s and early ’90s was limited only to that song.

However, in the 2000s, as part of my having become a music completist, I did my homework—I acquired the all three studio albums of the Dexys, and as usual, I discovered that there were more equally beautiful songs than Eileen: “Geno,” “Thankfully Not Living in Yorkshire It Doesn’t Apply,” “The Celtic Soul Brothers,” the Van Morrison cover “Jackie Wilson Said (I’m in Heaven when You Smile),” and “This Is What She’s Like.”

The music of Dexys Midnight Runners is best defined by the distinct voice of Rowland on a backdrop of a melange of Irish Folk, Celtic, Ska, and particularly North Soul music, complete with horns, piano, and fiddles.

Updating myself about the band, I found out that the midnight runners—now known simply as Dexys—have just released a new album after 27 years!

Once again, I surfed the ocean of the Internet and found the treasure I was looking for—Dexys’s latest, fourth album, entitled One Day I’m Going to Soar. My personal recommendations are “Free,” “I’m Always Going to Love You,” and “Incapable of Love.” In this new Dexys offering, Soul dominates their sound.

The band’s complete studioalbum discography is as follows: Searching for the Young Soul Rebels (1980), Too-Rye-Ay (1982), Don’t Stand Me Down (1985), and One Day I’m Going to Soar (2012).

One of the victims of the derogatory appellation “one-hit wonders” (coined by some narroweared music journalists) in the New Wave genre is Dexys Midnight Runners—the British band behind Final Note the hit single “Come On, Eileen,” The re-formed Dexys is still led from the band’s second album. by founding member Kevin Rowland

FCTPAM Annual Family Picnic at Kildonan Park

he Filipino Technical Professionals Association of Manitoba (FCTPAM) held it's Annual Picnic at the Park at Kildonan Park on July 28, 2012. The participants enjoyed the good weather, delicious filipino food, palour games and the warm fellowship with one another. Weekend Escape to the Whiteshell Taking time to stop and smell the pickerel and blueberries

T

he weather we've had in Manitoba has been nothing short of spectacular. When I received a message about a weekend retreat in the Whiteshell, I was pretty stoked as the timing worked out perfectly. It was a weekend I could escape from the normal hustle that happens during the summer on weekends in Winnipeg. More specifically, I was pretty excited for a mid-July weekend retreat of doing nothing

at the lake. The added bonus was I was going to be partaking in the annual All-You-Can-Eat Fish Fry in Otter Falls.

The All-You-Can-Eat (AYCE) Fish Fry at the Otter Falls Resort is an annual event and very well attended by many cottagers. The line to get into the Fish Fry was just as long as the lines at the Olive Garden on Portage Ave. on a Saturday night. With Kristin, Eryn and Mike as great company, the 30 minute wait passed quickly as

my stomach grumbled every time someone from the buffet walked passed with a heaping plate of salad, fries and fresh beer battered Manitoba pickerel. I couldn't wait to dig into my own plate.

Along with the bread, salads and fries, there were two styles of pickerel. I started off with the panfried pickerel and convinced myself that was the healthier option. After sitting down with the first helping, Kristin, Eryn and Mike twisted my rubber arm (quite easily) to try the Labatt Blue beer battered pickerel. I did and it was delicious.

In an attempt to work off all the pickerel, fries and salad consumed the previous evening, I convinced myself that I come along for a hike and go berry picking. I was game for both since I've always been curious about the Trans Canada Trail that snakes through the Whiteshell Provincial Park. Between the North and South Trans Canada Trails, there is over 120kms of developed

trails for hiking, cycling, skiing and horseback riding. There are many shorter hiking trails throughout the park including the challenging Mantario Trail which is 60km long.

Back to the hiking and berry picking trip. In fact, we didn't get that far at all. The hiking trip turned into an all-out berry picking adventure. Along the trail, we would find patches of wild blueberries and raspberries. Kristin brought a pail, and I brought my camera. All the berries I picked went straight into my mouth. I couldn’t resist the sweet taste of wild blueberries and raspberries. All the berries that Kristin picked were going to be used for a pie.

Folklorama Kick-Off at the Forks Saturday, August 4th

Folklorama Kick-off, a free event presented by Manitoba Lotteries, will beheld at the Scotiabank Stage at The Forks on Saturday, August 4 from 4:00pm to 11:00pm. It offers fun for the whole family including kids’ activities, giveaways, and an ethnic market presented by MTS. The mainstage show with international and local performing groups starts at 6:00 p.m. The evening is capped off with a spectacular fireworks display at 10:45 p.m.

The Bourne Legacy in Manila

he Hollywood action spy film stars Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross/Kenneth Gibson, Rachel Weisz as Dr. Stephanie Snyder, and Edward Norton as Byer.
