FOREWORD When the author of this book died in 1986, his book was not finished . Having worked with Phillip Katz on this book, I felt a deep obligation to bring his work to its final , well-deserved publication. His research uncovered one of the finest collections of photographs of wartime Philippines ever assembled in one book. Some of the photos have never been published. It is to his memory, and that of our close mutual friend, the late Col. Fred W. Walker, USAF, that this book is dedicated. Eugene J. Adams Editor March 1994

INTRODUCTION Almost forty years after the liberation of the Philippines in World War" is a long time for a pictorial review and history of an epic event. There can be little doubt about the dauntless courage and heroic effort of American and Philippine military forces on Luzon and the Bataan Peninsula in the 1940s. The war at sea was bold and intrepid . The naval battles for Leyte Gulf ended in a decisive American victory. Never again in the decade of the 1940s did the Japanese navy put to sea as a fleet. The Japanese military resistance to allied landings in the Philippines was fierce and determined. In a sense, the battle for Manila was tragic in that the Japanese and American high commands had hoped that the destruction of the capital city could be avoided. This book contains selected photographs that portray the various aspects of the war leading to the liberation of the Philippines. Through these photographs, the reader will obtain a realistic perspective of the heroic scope and valor of those who fought and died in the Philippines in the 1940s. This history should not be ignored - it should be recognized . The photographs in this book were selected to dramatically depict the activities associated with: • the Japanese attack on the Philippines, • Japanese occupation and the guerrilla war, • the war at sea, • the landings on Leyte and Luzon, • Japanese resistance - the land war • the battle for Manila • the Japanese surrender. About the Author Phillip P. Katz served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a combat Infantry Officer (Airborne) in the European Theater. Besides jumping into France at Normandy, he later took part in a paratroop operation in Korea. After his retirement as a highly decorated Lt. Colonel, Mr. Katz became a lecturer and professional consultant in International Communications until his death in 1986. This publication is dedicated to his memory, and to that of our close mutual friend, the late Col. Fred W. Walker, U.S.A.F. Special Operations Command. t.
