" Then, suddenly, the GIs of B Company heard the rattle of a machinegun and the boom of 75mm shellfire. The Sherman tank, about two blocks ahead of the American troops, burst into flames and exploded, sending the odor of oily smoke shooting up Manila's famed Taft Avenue. The GIs stopped abruptly, confused. "Hit the dirt! Off the road! Off the road!" yelled Captain Howland. _ The order came too late. The Japanese machinegun had already begun to cut a bloody swath of death in B Company's forward line ...
