About this exhibition guide This exhibition guide is designed for Filipino Women Community who are particularly interested in Humanities, Multimedia Arts, Social Sciences, History, Anthropology, and other study fields connected to the exhibition, Abremata to be used as a beginning point for conversations and exercises. The subject matter Women Empowerment will be covered specifically.

It provides supporting material, inquiries, and tasks that encourage engagement in the key areas: •

to give a unique perspective on beauty standards towards its audience or readers

•

apply graphic design principles through traditional and digital in crafting a Zine for Filipino women

•

contribute to the empowerment of women and encourage them to embrace their authentic image and the diverse Filipina trends on beauty that existed before and in the current times.

About Mabuhay Ka Filipina Mabuhay Ka Filipina is an art project about promoting diverse Filipino Women Beauty. It talks about beauty and awareness. The Zine is a collection of women’s thoughts on beauty, visual imageries and some personalities that are diverse in beauty features, life background, and abilities.

Project Description

The mixed media Zine shows how western perspectives shape Filipino Women’s perception on beauty ideals and diversity. There is so much diversity in terms of what is considered attractive here in the country including the face shapes, body types, skin color, hair styles, and fashion style. This project will show how the Western perspective on beauty influenced Filipino women’s aesthetic preference and will contribute to the empowerment of women by encouraging them to embrace their authentic image and the diverse Filipina trends on beauty that existed before and in the current time.

Idealized beauty cannot be eradicated in the current contemporary world since it is present in any commercial or any product promotions relating to cosmetics, fashion, or health. In general, the importance of beauty, with a strong emphasis on the body, is on show almost everywhere-on advertisements, in shop windows, in media, and people's ordinary conversations. Beauty ideals, commonly defined, portray culturally defined and promoted 'looks' which integrate different characteristics of the face and body, and thus determine the norms within a culture regarding physical appearance.

In connection to the present, history played a role within the way Filipinos have an outlook in life since the Philippines was colonized by Spain and America leading them to think highly of these countries, specifically their standards of beauty similarly. As this perception destroys ethnic identity and therefore the collective self-esteem of Filipinos, furthermore as with other

postcolonial ethnicities, the colonial mentality causes a big effect on Filipino psychological well-being. The colonial mindset leads Filipinos to not have a way of pride in their race or culture.

Moreover, as determined by Renault (2020): “there could be a global Westernized beauty stereotype that emphasizes light skin, eyes, and hair as desirable characteristics; in observations on fashion, model choice, advertising, and media photos, the study validates this.” The people involved in these extravagances in following certain standards of beauty are also promoting body image types, which vary yet several individuals have been found to think of themselves as inferior to influencers or not beautiful.

Individual Activity: 1. Look back on moments wherein you look at a magazine, watch a commercial or an ad about beauty products and standards. Ask yourself, how does the media affect your perception of beauty and your self-image?

2. When Filipinos choose to present themselves in public, do you think colonial mentality shifts the mindset of Filipino women when it comes to beauty and diversity?
