A MESSAGE FROM CONFERENCE DIRECTOR, MS JOSHILA LAL AND FPS PRESIDENT, MR REENAL CHAND
ONE HEALTH
On behalf of the organizing committee, I am delighted to invite you to the 2022 Fiji Pharmaceutical Society HALEON Annual Conference.
We had hoped that the dawn of 2022 will bring good news and allow us to reconnect again after the last 2 years of uncertainty, travel restrictions and lockdowns. Luckily this year, we can meet face to face and reconnect with colleagues, old friends and hope to find solutions to complex global issues. Often, a singular approach is not enough to tackle such significant, multi-layered problems such as climate change, rising noncommunicable diseases, zoonotic diseases and antimicrobial resistance to name a few Such complex issues call for cross-sectoral collaborative efforts of a multi-disciplinary workforce.
The COVID 19 pandemic showed us the power of collaboration and the resilience of the human spirit. Collaboration is key to success in this new world order. Now more than ever, we must learn to reach across our differences and work together with not only other healthcare workers but also with professionals from other disciplines. Our conference theme “One Health” enshrines a collaborative, multisectoral, and transdisciplinary approach and highlights that our health is closely linked to the health of animals, plants, and the environment.
We hope you are as excited as we are to be part of this action-packed program where you will hear perspectives from the multiple sectors involved in One Health. We hope that this conference provides a springboard for robust discussions which will galvanise us as pharmacists back into action.
It was very motivating to get a lot of keen
interest and response from contributors and like-minded educational fraternity. I sincerely offer my earnest gratitude to those who have contributed through their experience, expertise and/or research papers at the conference. I am confident that the comprehensive program will deliver the knowledge-rich conference experience that will support your learning and development
We would also like to welcome back our long-term sponsors and thank them for their continued support and presence over the years and at the same time a big vanaka vakalevu to our Platinum Sponsor Haleon as a newcomer.

Assistant Professor Rietie Venter University of South Australia
A/Prof Rietie Venter is currently the Head of Microbiology in Clinical and Health Sciences at the University of South Australia. She also leads the Antimicrobial Resistance stream in Health and Biomedical Innovation. Her research focuses on antimicrobial resistance in microbes which is one of the most serious threats in healthcare today. Her group works on projects aimed at understanding and preventing the development and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance through a One Health approach. The Venter lab utilises a multipronged approach consisting of molecular microbiology, genomics, bioinformatics and protein biochemistry to gain a molecular understanding of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms. This knowledge is then used as the basis for an antimicrobial drug discovery program headed by Rietie that is aimed at finding new therapeutics against drug resistant bacterial pathogens.
Rietie obtained her BSc(Hons) and Master’s degrees with distinction from the University of the Free State in South Africa before securing a scholarship to
do a PhD in the UK. After completing her PhD at the University of Leeds in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, she moved to Cambridge, where she spent twelve years doing research on multidrug transporters, first as a post doc and later running her own research group as a Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellow in the Department of Pharmacology Not content with moving continents once in a lifetime, she left the ancient buildings and immaculate college lawns of Cambridge for sun and sea in Adelaide, Australia after sixteen years in the UK.
The Venter lab is a vibrant, diverse and international community that collaborates extensively nationally and internationally and welcomes visitors. Rietie is also the lead investigator for the Australian side of an eAsia ATTACK AMR initiative that includes Thailand, USA, Japan and the Philippines aimed at finding alternatives for antimicrobial therapies to reduce antibiotic use.

In this conference, she will provide an overview on patient knowledge and perception of antibiotics in community pharmacies. This research was part of her pharmacy internship program. Researchers have found that the general public plays a pivotal role in the increase and spread of
antibiotic resistance. The present study was designed to get a better understanding of the existing pieces of evidence pertaining to knowledge and perception about antibiotics in the general population in Fiji.
Her previous research includes “Analytical method development for estimation of Serratiopeptidase using Quality by Design approach” which was carried out at SCES's Indira college of Pharmacy, India.
Another study entailed “Streptophotometric Analysis of Amoxycillin Capsules” that was part of her Bachelor of Pharmacy program in Fiji. This was a baseline study that would provide information base against which to monitor and assess the validation procedure for Amoxycillin Trihydrate capsules.
