Authentic: Dr. Karen Schwarz ASTRONOMER Dr. Karen Schwarz loves expanding people’s horizons. As an associate professor at West Chester University and director of the Sandra F. Pritchard Mather Planetarium, Karen is helping people of all ages to understand more about the fascinating worlds beyond our planet. Thousands of people enjoy immersive films, live shows, and varied educational presentations under the 360-degree dome every year. Karen is eager to share this unique resource with the community. Karen’s own horizons were expanded when she took an aptitude test in middle school that suggested “astronomer” as a possible profession. “I didn’t know that was a job,” she says, “but it sounded cool.” She studied and began her career under the clear, dark night skies of New
Mexico and Arizona before coming to West Chester. Although she still loves observing stars through a telescope on a mountaintop and continuing her research on interacting binary stars, she also enjoys her expanded and varied teaching roles. Her current research focuses on exploring the best ways to teach science to different audiences and tying classroom education to learning in informal settings. An avid runner with her feet on terra firma, Karen is refreshingly down to earth. It can be difficult, she knows, to visualize something from two perspectives. “Being inside the dome is like being part of a giant model,” she says, and she often uses handson 3D models, like a giant protractor her husband built, to help students
understand baffling concepts like lunar phases. In addition to working with school groups at the planetarium, Karen is the director of Project ASTRO WCU—a national program that pairs astronomers with classroom teachers. She’s also passionate about encouraging girls to pursue STEM careers. The annual Super Science Saturday offers middleand high-school girls opportunities to participate in workshops and interact with female scientists. “I really want to encourage girls with promise who might be afraid to pursue science,” she says. Karen extends an open invitation to the community to explore the planetarium’s public outreach programs at wcupa.edu/planetarium.

I T I S A G R E AT neighborhood in the ‘perfect’ town—the southeast quadrant of West Chester’s borough is a vibrant mix of commercial and residential. “It’s amazing to see our West Chester Borough today from my personal perspective,” says Jean Gross, Keller Williams Realtor and longtime West Chester Borough resident. Jean’s fourpart tour of the Borough continues with this third installment, highlighting the Southeast Quadrant. She’s seen many changes over the 45+ years since she attended college here and met her husband, Bob.

The newly married couple bought their first home on East Gay Street in 1976, and Jean commuted into Philadelphia on the West Chester Railroad—often with a sandwich from DeSTARR’s Restaurant. One of the nation’s first railroads, chartered in 1832, W.C.R.R. transported workers, students, soldiers, and goods for many decades. The station was demolished in 1968. Volunteers have restored the service, and today passengers can experience the beautiful Chester Creek Valley on this railroad that Classic Towns named 2018’s “Best Family Activity.”
The Salvation Army and Safe Harbor of Chester County are two important humanitarian resources located in this area of town. The Salvation Army continues to meet physical and spiritual needs, as it has since 1897. Two members of Jean’s team volunteer at Safe Harbor, a nonprofit that provides food and access to support services in a structured environment for the homeless.
The Good Will Fire Company, another neighborhood asset, has been protecting lives and properties for more than 175 years. In the 1970s, before wireless anything, the siren would sound to call the brave firefighters to the station. “Wow!” Jean says. “It was so loud, you could hear it for miles! We are so very grateful for our firefighters.” “The West Chester Area Senior Center does so much for the

GIVING BACK Making a difference in the lives of others.
G I V I N G B AC K : S TA N + D O N N A E DWA R D S S TA N L E Y E D WA R D S was a likeable kid, had a wide circle of friends, and big dreams for the future. “All of his teachers loved him,” says his mother, Donna. “He was athletically talented and academically gifted.” Then the unimaginable happened, and 12-year-old Stanley was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. When surgery to remove the tumor resulted in paralysis and learning disabilities, Stanley persevered and overcame adversity as he learned to do everything all over again. Stanley died two years later, in 2002, and his family had to rely on their strong faith community to carry them through very dark days. They wanted to channel their grief

into something positive to honor Stanley. With a generous first donation from Clifford DeBaptiste, the former mayor of West Chester, Stanley’s Dream was born in 2004. Stanley’s Dream strives to fund research on childhood brain cancer and to provide scholarships for graduating seniors. The organization has raised more than $200,000 so far from fundraisers, and although a cure is still elusive, the prognosis is much better now than it was when Stanley was diagnosed. “Many of our scholarship recipients have financial need and are the first in their families to attend college,” says Donna. “Although they may not have 4.0 GPAs, their essays reflect that they share the strong desire for higher education that Stanley had.”
Stanley’s parents, Donna and Stan, are grateful to be under the 501(c)(3) umbrella of the Chester County Community Foundation, which manages the fund. Stanley’s Dream sponsors three annual fundraiser events—a 5K race on New Year’s Day, a dinner and dance, and golf event in August. The Edwards cherish continued contact with Stanley's classmates and love hearing from scholarship recipients. “We want to carry on Stanley’s legacy and bring something positive out of adversity,” says Donna, “to help others and those who loved him.” For more information about Stanley's Dream, visit stanleysdream.org.

Part 4: Patti Brennan THE FIRST THREE PARTS of this series on Patti Brennan, CFP, President of Key Financial, Inc., have traced her inspirational story from the company’s humble but passionately client-focused beginnings in her laundry room. Brennan weathered the financial crisis by holding on to core values and committing to seeing her team and her clients through the storm. Today the growing company is looking to the future as it continues to invest generously in the community and prepares the next generation of leaders to continue to serve clients with wisdom and care. Bringing Brennan’s story up to the present moment is, therefore, only the beginning. She’s been building a legacy for nearly thirty years, and she’s quick to credit successes, brilliant ideas, and innovations to her team, her “intellectual capital.” She’s also committed to supporting and encouraging the professional development of every employee. Key Client Specialist Liz Miller, for example, began her career in the financial industry and then took time off to raise her children.

She reentered the workforce as a teacher in a private preschool, but when her youngest was in middle school and her oldest started college, she had more time to reflect on her future. For years, she had watched and respected the career of her longtime friend and neighbor, Patti Brennan, and asked her for advice. “I’d love to hire you,” Brennan said. Miller was delighted to join the team and she hasn’t looked back since. She’s grateful not only for this opportunity but also for Brennan’s support and for the ways she challenges her and pushes her out of her comfort zone. With Brennan’s encouragement, she’s studying to become the firm’s Compliance expert. “It’s not just a job,” Miller says. “It’s a career, and it’s a family. Catherine Seisson of La Baguette Magique IN THE PREDAWN SILENCE, Catherine Seisson begins each day kneading, breathing in the reassuring fragrance of yeast. She’s grateful for this task that requires her all and gives meaning, wisdom, and life. Seisson’s story is seasoned with resilience, faith, and love. A native of Lyon, Seisson completed her PhD in languages and built a successful career in the pharmaceutical industry. She enjoyed international travel, ran transversal global projects, and her path seemed set and secure. But after losing her first husband and facing her son’s diagnosis of severe brain damage that, the doctors said, meant he would never walk or write, Seisson began learning to “live with what is, and not what you hoped would be.” She worked part-time to care for and travel with her son and adopted a second child. The company became a huge conglomerate and, she says, “I was losing the meaning. I needed something real that brought me closer to people.”
So Seisson took a year off to attend school for baking and found the connection she’d been missing. She also found Patrick, a CEO turned chef. They were married in Philadelphia, and together they looked to open La Baguette Magique. “West Chester had all the goods—a vibrant small town and great community, students, the library, hospital—everything except bread!” Although Seisson has earned numerous awards, her satisfied customers are her best reward. “Bread is all about sharing,” she says. She’s grateful to all the people in her life who have been “little bridges” of support in just the right moments. Seisson’s son overcame the odds and is now in his second year at university. “He taught me about courage and resilience.” Seisson wants both of her children to remember that if they’re not deeply happy, changes are always possible. “To make real, hard choices requires faith and overcoming fears.”
