The holidays for most of us are about giving thanks and giving of ourselves to others. Amidst the hustle and bustle that comes with this time of year, we pause with intentionality to show gratitude for our city so full of magic, beauty, and tradition. With much to do and preparations to be made for various celebrations and gatherings, it can be easy to lose focus on the small moments. It’s not uncommon to get so caught up in the activity of the season that we miss out on some of the magic that is unique to Lancaster and to this time of year. We’re told it’s the moments that will endure and make the most impact; though the days will fly by, the moments will stick with us and so we try to make the most of the ones we have. We breathe them in like crisp winter air and hold them in our chests to be warmed by their glow. We take snapshots with our minds and try to freeze the perfect moments that are scattered amongst the holiday bustle. That moment before handing a loved one the gift you know will surprise and delight them. The way a child’s eyes light up as Christmas bells are heard along our city streets. The warmth of grabbing the gloved hand of a loved one, walking through the quiet of evening when the snow first begins to fall. The glow you feel when you bring warmth to someone in need. The moment of waking up to find the whole city blanketed in white or looking around the dinner table to see every place filled by loved ones who have found their way to your home. As we embrace the moments we have with gratitude, we should also look for ways to share our blessings with others. When we realize how much we have been given, it’s imperative that we give back to our community. There are countless opportunities to give of time and resources right here in our city. From shopping locally, to participating in the Extraordinary Give, or volunteering time and energy at one of our many philanthropic organizations, we hope you’ll join us in making sure that our moments endure for ourselves, our families, our small businesses, and our community this holiday season.

Lancaster will be ecstatic to hear that a meadery is coming to town. Fans of Tolkien, Beowolf, Game of Thrones, and Thor will be thrilled to have ready access to the drink that’s long been hailed in literature as the “nectar of the gods.” However, if you’re unfamiliar with drinks that surged in popularity in the Middle Ages, the crew at Meduseld Meadery on Harrisburg Pike is especially anxious to introduce you! Mead is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented honey. It comes in many forms and appeals to diverse tastes. Meduseld founder Will

MEA DERY

Wrede describes mead as a “social chameleon,” taking on the flavors and mood of the ingredients used to make it. It can be served like a beer, a wine, or even take on characteristics of champagne. Historically, mead halls were the place where people would come to mark the important moments of their lives. If they were celebrating, if someone died, if a battle or raid was being planned, folks would flock to the mead hall. Lancaster’s meadery will preserve the tradition and celebration of old, while bringing a modern, local take with live music, long communal tables,

nooks to relax with a book or a board game, and tours of the meadery. With the resurgence in popularity this ancient drink has had in recent years, Meduseld Meadery is proud to introduce the mead experience to our community. Opening in December, the Meduseld crew is ready to help Lancaster ring in the holidays with new experiences that nod to old traditions, and an inviting place to grab your loved ones and raise a glass (or drinking horn) to toast more reasons to celebrate in 2017. A letter reveals, “Soon after the sprightly and agreeable Miss Emily Baker arrived, she asked Old Buck’s permission to organize and hostess a holiday party. of the magic that can happen when talented, successful, entrepreneurial women see a need in their community and work together to fill it. Jessica Dey holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from Penn State. She performed on stage and screen in New York City before moving to Lancaster in 2012. Sarah Cope studied under Dale Moore (Senior Professor of Voice at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY) and has performed across the country. Both of these accomplished artists grace our local stages and share a passion for teaching their craft to the rising stars in our community. Jessica and Sarah came together in their realization that there

was a need for rentable studio space in Lancaster that teachers could use to offer lessons on their own terms, and that performance artists could use for rehearsing, recording, and refining their craft. The two collaborated and founded Creative Pursuits. The studio space is constantly alive with music and movement. Some of the most successful and sought-after dancers, musicians, singers, and performers are sharing their trade secrets, triumphs, and passions with talented hopefuls, who are excited to learn and grow. Creative Pursuits offers instruction in voice, guitar, piano, dance, violin, and yoga with new classes often being added. For students, the space offers a cornucopia

of options to meet every need and schedule. For teachers, the space allows talented professionals to share their knowledge with students while building their own schedule on their own terms. Creative Pursuits is holding their launch Cabaret on December 12, highlighting local professionals. The event, sponsored by Wells Fargo, is downtown at the Tell Studio Theatre at the Fulton with cocktails at 6 pm and Cabaret at 7 pm. Then we EDUCATE better movement patterns for lifting, pushing, and pulling, and modify work stations for optimal ergonomic efficiency. SAVE THE DATE! January 28, 2017. YWCA Lancaster’s Pop-Up Party, benefitting our Child Development programs, is back by popular demand! Here’s the skinny: the location will be kept secret until a few days prior to the event. We’re rocking it old school, so bring back your Afro and dust off those platform shoes and bell bottoms as we celebrate the funkadelic decade of the 70’s! Can you dig it? Guests will enjoy a night of live performances, endless flashback jams, and dancing the night away among a crowd of far out 70’s fans. Mark your calendars now for a night taken to the max!

Every day The Mix at Arbor Place serves 80 to 100 kids in an intentional afterschool program. This free program provides tutoring, poetry lessons, music, mentoring, and free meals to all participants.

CELEBR ATING THE SEASON OF

GIVING BACK what is it about giving that makes this season so magical? Often it’s knowing someone so well that you can find the perfect gift. It’s understanding another’s passion that guides you to the ideal token. It’s the moment you know you’ve connected in a meaningful way. In our community, giving back is even more magical. Giving back is the golden thread that weaves our community together and connects each of us to the causes we care about and to each other. Lancaster has a deep generosity and a thriving creativity that makes giving back a celebration of the good work happening all around us. Together, we care deeply about many causes… our children and families, our education and health, the richness of our arts, history, and culture, and the beauty of our farmlands and wild spaces. This community comes together to support the many different causes that make Lancaster stronger. In this season, take the opportunity to support those causes that are meaningful to you. Because giving back is personal, it’s passionate, it’s deliberate. And it makes our community a place where magic happens.

on the following pages are many ways to give back to your community. Find your passion. Show support with your dollars on November 18 at the Extraordinary Give and be a part of the culture of philanthropy all year long.

a community celebration of giving november 18, 2016

5 years of the extraordinary give! Together we’ve raised more than $15 million in only 96 hours for organizations that enrich Lancaster County! Thanks to our community, since its launch in 2012, the Extraordinary Give has evolved from a 24-hour online giving marathon into the region’s largest Community Celebration of Giving. On November 18, you can once again be part of the Extraordinary Give. For 24 hours, donate online to more than 425 local organizations at ExtraGive.org and the Lancaster County Community Foundation, Rodgers & Associates, and our community partners will stretch your dollars with at least $300,000 in additional funds and prizes!

here’s how it works: •

On November 18, visit ExtraGive.org from your computer, smartphone, or device.

Visit the pages of more than 425 organizations and learn how their work impacts Lancaster County.

Make an online donation to an organization that is important to you (min $25).

Each organization then receives a percentage of the stretch pool. So, if an organization raises 3% of the day’s donations, they will receive 3% of the stretch pool.

p e o p l e , b u s i n e s s , c o m m u n i t y— A new hub of connectivity... open to all. Coming spring 2017!

“For a leader like The Lancaster Chamber, you need to have a strong presence to be an anchor in our business community. By co-locating with other community organizations, The Chamber is creating an important destination for businesses to access many resources under one roof. If we want a world-class Chamber, in a world-class city, our community needs to invest in creating a facility that will help us all be more successful.” John McGrann, Penn Stone

“We did not hesitate to support The Chamber in this initiative and their model that is inclusive of all businesses and brings together many organizations working toward the same goals. Sharing resources and creating synergies is an important part of community building. Having a Chamber that recognizes that our business community is better and stronger when we come together is very important for our future.” Joan Paxton & Scott Fiore, TriStarr

“The Chamber sets the standard for what it means to do business in Lancaster County and is able to put the effort and the energy toward how we move the needle to make this community even more prosperous than it is today. This really is a generational moment. The Chamber will be in this space for a very, very long time and is positioning itself to make a lot of great improvements to our business community.” Michelle Rondinelli, Kitchen Kettle Foods

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

FROM THE COTTON-HEADED-NINNY-MUGGINS AT WILLIAMS FORREST

VOIC E S

“I know The Mellowells are proud of their live shows; add that to a good new album that showcases their musicianship, vocals, and cool harmonies. When I listen to this music I hear Dr. Dog, The Hollies, and My Morning Jacket. Check them out!

helen leicht, wxpn

The Mellowells with album #2 hitting the market and a contagious positive attitude radiating from the band, this is the perfect time to meet The Mellowells!

United by similar music classes and majors, The Mellowells were born out of camaraderie at Lebanon Valley College in the spring of 2013. Jesse (guitar and co-vocalist) needed a backing band for a scheduled on-campus performance. His friends John (guitarist and co-vocalist), Caden (bass), and Cory (drums) were happy to lend a hand. Everything gelled. Only four months later The Mellowells had recorded and released Author Of Modern Thought, an all-original five song EP.

Left to right: Cory Paternoster, Jesse Barki, Caden Myers & John DiCocco

With a full length album already in their pocket, late 2014’s Shindy, the guys are raring to get out there and play. Chatting over craft beer and pizza at The Fridge, we learned of their wide variety of indie rock and rock 'n' roll influences, and how all this, and ultimately their own ideas, add up to creating a wonderfully intricate Mellowells song. Their transparent ability to share and compromise not only lends itself to very content recording results but to the overall health of the band. An August 2016 ten day tour, all the way up the coast to Maine, seemed to only strengthen them. No two sets were the same as they experimented with

obtaining a better flow in between songs and improving the connection with the audience. To that we say, well done! The self-made new album is called Head Space. You may have already heard the second single Tiny Beds on WXPN. Try to catch them on tour soon enough because as Cory said, “We are very proud of the new album but we are even prouder of what we do live. Live is what we love to do and we want people to be there with us." Coming soon: Fig and WXPN present The Mellowells at Tellus360! Check the events calendar at figlancaster.com for details. figlancaster.com

SOULFUL CONNECTIONS therapeutic writing for adults, children & teens

the art of putting writers at ease Some things can’t be rushed. Since 2001, Melissa Greene has mentored writers of all levels: one word, one sentence, one paragraph at a time. Her mission: to keep the warmth of humanity in teaching, while introducing creative writing as a path to calm, joy, and deeper self-understanding. Words to describe her work? Playful, soothing, and just slightly left of center. With compassion, and a touch of mischief, her coaching illuminates the wonder, beauty, and hope that lie within us. A safe haven, where writing—without fear—becomes fun, freeing, and a catalyst for courage and self-esteem. No grades, grammar, punctuation, or red pen.

Karin Meacham Owner, Art and Glassworks

AU T HEN T IC :

KARIN MEACHAM

"i don’t fail at much of anything; I

make sure that I don’t. Anybody can succeed at anything they want if they put their heart and soul into it. When you want to do something enough, you’ll figure it out!” says business owner Karin Meacham. When you walk into her Art & Glassworks shop, you know you’ve stumbled into some place remarkable. Every inch of the store is dancing with light, color, and whimsy. Sun streams through stained glass and illuminates beautiful art, deco lamps, and garden fairy houses. Each corner draws you in as treasures spill over the shelves and beckon you to explore. If you’ve been shopping on the 300 block of Queen Street, you know how well visited this part of town is. Shoppers with an eye for beauty and a

desire to find something unique flock here, but it wasn’t always that way. 29 years ago, the City was still considered up-and-coming to entrepreneurial hopefuls like Karin. “Nobody came into the City to shop” she explains, “it wasn’t a popular place to visit; people didn’t think it was safe.” Determined to be a successful woman business owner, Karin leaned in to the community and efforts to clean up the block, support schools, and celebrate the arts. She led a chess club at the elementary school and held fundraisers to instate a post prom. When First Fridays were initiated, bringing traffic her way, she stayed open a few hours later and hired live bands to play in her courtyard to help draw the crowd to her part of town.

Her efforts brought her customers, but more importantly, cemented her place in the tapestry and tradition of the City. As much as she and her shop are a part of the community, the community is a part of her. She lights up telling stories of favorite customers, like Charlie who came in all week reminding her of his upcoming 83rd birthday, or the five cousins who have been coming in annually for the last decade. “There’s a real sense of tradition in Lancaster. People have brought their children to our shop who then grew up and brought their children here years later,” says Karin, and people will continue to come, and Karin will be there. PROUDLY INTRODUCING LANCASTER'S

KING & QUEEN OF HAPPY! HOLIDAY 2016

Our king & queen received a prize pack fit for royalty thanks to the generous gifts from Willow Valley Communities & Sweet Legacy Gourmet.

KING KEVIN RESSLER

QUEEN HILARY SCHENCK Born and raised in the Philadelphia area, Hilary decided to give Lancaster a try with her husband in 1996. Twenty years, two kids, and a coffee business (Mean Cup) later, she proudly considers herself a Lancastrian. She's a teacher at heart, having taught in the School District of Lancaster for 15 years. Hilary enjoys art and music and believes she is happy because she chooses to be—always looking on the bright side of things.

hilary's words of wisdom:

"Be good, do good, and look for the good in everything"

Kevin M. Ressler, M.Div. sits on the boards of ASSETS, Atlantic Coast Conference, EVERENCE credit Union, and works as Executive Director of Meals on Wheels Lancaster—as well as being a community activist, traveling preacher, lover of poetry, and theater. For years his friends have jokingly called him the Mayor for his love of Lancaster and effort to convince anyone visiting here to buy a house because, “Lancaster is just a few key decisions and a few million people away from being on par with the New York's and Nairobi's of the world.”

kevin's words of wisdom:

“my recipe for success is: Ingredients: 1. Think big 2. Think bigger Process: Surround yourself with excellent, fun, and lively people. Incorporate your ideas and mix with refined ideas. Allow the best to rise over time. Proof process until complete. Make reality of the imagined results. Results (and credit) best shared with everyone. So thanks to everyone I've ever partnered with. This coronation is also yours.”

PEOPLE IN PAIN

COMMUNITY SUPPORTER

after months of excruciating, debilitating back pain, Joyce

Kaplan was in bad shape. She found little hope in her doctor’s prognosis and prescription pain killers were providing little relief. Finally, a friend recommended Lancaster NeuroScience & Spine Associates and Joyce decided to give them a call. She was able to see neurosurgeon Dr. Bill Monacci the very next day. After her appointment with Dr. Monacci her outlook on the situation had brightened. Dr. Monacci was able to review her MRI and

provide a prognosis for her condition and, more importantly, assure Joyce that he could help resolve her back pain! “He was so prepared and knowledgeable. It was very reassuring.” Joyce remembers. A few days later Joyce was checking in to their state-of-the-art surgery center, The NeuroSpine Center, to undergo a 2-Level Lumbar Discectomy and Decompression procedure by Dr. Monacci. “I was the first surgery of the morning and everyone who greeted me was warm and welcoming and let me know that I was going to be well cared for.” Although Dr. Monacci cautioned

Joyce she may have a long recovery process, she was ecstatic to find herself pain free just two days post op. And, in just a few short weeks she was able to return to work and get back to enjoying her life, friends, family, and traveling again. “I got my life back!” she beamed. When asked what she would say to someone else dealing with back pain or contemplating surgery, Joyce’s face lights up. “Dr. Monacci all the way. I would recommend him and the staff at Lancaster NeuroScience & Spine Associates to anyone without hesitation!”
