Another warm welcome goes to spring! As we cast off our winter coats, the city is coming to life. So what’s new? We’re so glad you asked.

We see a renaissance on the horizon. Just a few of the groundbreaking projects include: Southern Market Lancaster, an urban food hall where you can get menu items from around the world alongside really good cocktails; Landis Place, a new residential community on King Street; The Intel, the historic renovation of 8 West King Street; and, of course, the much-anticipated Mosaic—a high-rise, 55+ residential hub in the heart of the city.

And not just the skyline is changing. Businesses and non-profits are making strides to connect and benefit the Lancaster community in nationally-recognized ways—most notably the unprecedented announcement by High

companies which you can read about on page 15. We could not be more excited about what this means for our community, and we thank Dale High for his continued commitment to Lancaster.

In this issue, we’re showcasing many of the things that make Lancaster City a destination for small city living. The walkability. The food. The art and theatre. The nightlife. The rolling fields and fresh air just minutes away (and the list just keeps on growing!). We think this place is pretty special. Fresh Face: James Street Med Spa JAMIE GARLAND AND ASHLEE LU DW I G are using their passion for wellness and beauty to demystify skincare (and bust some beauty myths).

After receiving national recognition for their work, the two women decided to open their own business, James Street MedSpa. “We’ve always had the same vision for a spa, and we were picturing the same style from day one,” Garland said. “We thought it was time to transition [from working together as estheticians and laser technicians] and take all the knowledge and experience we had to provide our services in the best way.”

These experts use a high-tech skin analysis machine on all their new clients to get an accurate picture of the skin’s surface (and sub-surface). Then they discuss the client’s concerns before

educating clients about products and making recommendations for treatments.

Their individualized approach to skincare takes the guesswork out of creating a regimen. “The biggest mistake people make is mixing products and layering things you shouldn’t be putting together,” Ludwig said.

“They are learning from influencers but not choosing products that work for their specific skin type. Our clients stay with us because we explain why we recommend certain products for their skin.”

The owners take the med in MedSpa very seriously. Dr. Nazafarine Keyvani is a board-certified surgeon specializing in robotic surgery and medical cosmetics. Every treatment with Dr. Keyvani requires a prior consultation to ensure the client receives the best care possible. Both Garland and Ludwig

go to skill trainings on the latest in beauty technology, and they are certified to train other estheticians in lasers. “When it comes to safety, we do everything by the book,” Garland said.

James Street MedSpa has services for all skin types. Clients can receive precise surgical treatments from Dr. Keyvani and reiki energy work with one of the massage therapists as well as traditional facials, deep tissue massages, and microdermabrasion. The spa even has online consultations through platforms like Instagram. The owners like their selection of spa treatments to be just as diverse as their clients. “I’m not trying to sell you something,” Garland said. “We’re skin experts, and we help people feel and look their best.” Skin treatment veterans and newbies alike are welcome at James Street MedSpa.

In 2021, the workforce faced the beginning of what many are calling “the great resignation.” An organizational psychologist coined the phrase to explain the vast number of people who quit their jobs due to the coronavirus pandemic searching for more fulfilling work. COVID acted as a magnifying glass causing many to look at how and why they work. While many organizations struggle to muster employee engagement, Woodstream seems to have a crucial ingredient for success.

“Employee volunteerism increases employee engagement, improves retention, and creates an opportunity for team bonding at service events,” says Pam Bauer, the Executive Assistant to CEO. Today’s employee doesn’t want to show up somewhere and collect a paycheck; they want to be a part of a company that contributes to the community in a meaningful way.

The perks at Woodstream are every philanthropic worker’s dream. Employees are offered volunteer opportunities during working and non-working hours to earn “comp time” (essentially, workers receive PTO to give back to their community). Each of the team members can also offer suggestions for volunteer opportunities. This prioritization of service and the employee’s time is an intentional move to build a dedicated, compassionate team of workers. “I have ‘grown up’ with Woodstream over the last 28 years and experienced its evolution from a small, family-owned company to an international powerhouse in the lawn and garden and pest control arena,” says Sheri Rice, Senior Director of Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance at Woodstream. “In my latest role, as Senior Director of ESG, I’ve been able to marry the people and relationships with our focus on the community and world around us. Woodstream has been a staple of Lancaster County employment for over 100 years and has actively participated in the community.

Bass’ vision was to provide turn-key solutions in paint-finishing systems for manufacturing facilities, and Al collaborated with several engineering companies across the USA. Over the years, Al grew three divisions to support this vision—mechanical, fabrication, and electrical. But when Al passed away in an accident in 2014, Shelley and her family had to suddenly determine how to move the company forward.

The Baums’ son, Casey, had been working with his father for three years and found himself stepping up as CEO 88

after the accident, using the knowledge he learned from his dad to craft a strategic plan and invest in Bass Mechanical’s future.

After several years of trying to rebuild, the family realized it was time to sell the business in 2020. LINK Business came highly recommended to Shelley by both her attorney and accountant.

LINK knew the sale would be a complex one. They used their local relationships in the Lancaster County area to find two excited companies who were interested in buying parts of Bass Mechanical, taking extra care to find the best outcome for Shelley and her family as well.

“It’s not easy to divide one company, but the two buyers collaborated in a lot of ways,” Joseph Guarino, Principal, President, and CEO of LINK Business, said. With one company taking the steel fabrication side and the other purchasing their contracting divisions, Bass Mechanical officially closed last year. Spayd’s Industrial now owns and resides in the last Bass location in Elizabethtown, and the move to this prime location has enabled Spayd’s to expand its business.

For Shelley, it was the partnership with LINK that made this difficult decision easier. “They were great to work with—very professional and fun even under the circumstances,” Shelley said. “They showed up 24/7 to help with the transition and made it as easy as they could.

[Joe and Gary] were completely invested and had my best interest in mind.”

Although Bass Mechanical no longer exists, the legacy of what Al and Shelley built is being carried forward in new ways through the buyers in the community. Shelley says she feels lighter and back on her feet—she even wanders over from time to time to say hello.

Guarino says he is passionate about continuing to help businesses just like Bass Mechanical. “At the end of the day, we are helping business owners on a topic most of them don’t know a lot about,” he said. “Their hearts and souls are in these businesses so getting them to the right outcome at the end of it is extremely gratifying.”

“Our job is to find that right fit for the next owner or owners so the legacy of the business can be carried forward, [along with] the right outcome for the seller as well,” he added.

Andrea: I am continuing the legacy that Jude Sharp and M. Sue Martin started in 1984 with Sharp Jewelers, focusing on inclusivity and offering custom future heirlooms and American-made jewelry and crafts.

Timbrel: My father’s boldness to leave everything he ever knew to start a new life in a new country was my inspiration to be bold and fearless—to follow my dreams. Growing up as a first generation South Asian, I quickly realized the beauty the eastern world (and beyond) had to offer and wanted to showcase the handcrafted community and sustainable fashion world. Providing fair wages to my design team and their families means I’m helping change the course of their futures for generations to come.

Elizabeth: Ever since I was little I loved reading, and I always dreamed about having my own bookstore. It was an idea I had living in the back of my mind until the pieces fell into place. With the help of my partner, Teddy, I realized I could live my dream today.

Fig: What is your secret superpower?

Andrea: My super power is remembering customers’ names and their jewelry even if I haven’t seen them in years.

Fig: How do you give back to the community and how does the community support you?

Andrea: The Lancaster community has shown their support for our small handcrafted jewelry store for over 38 years. We wouldn’t be here without them, and we love our community back by focusing our giving to local and city nonprofits and charities.

Fig: What is your secret superpower?

Elizabeth: My superpower is speed reading—I can read a 500 page book in one day. Last month I read 15 novels.

Timbrel: My mother taught me how to sew my first pillow when I was 5, and my passion for design and fashion was born. In high school, my school counselor asked me to consider fashion design, but I was adamant to study pre-med...and the rest is a very long story.

Elizabeth: I give back to my community by offering a platform for local creators.

We currently house five creators, four of them being women. And my community supports me by donating their books and telling their community about my business, so the word is always spreading.

S H O RT LY A F T E R O P E N I N G , Rob Patz and Rob Tarves, owners of Our Town Brewery, realized they had a big sound issue in their main space. With 32-foot ceilings and four large storefront windows, they knew their project was going to present unique challenges.

After connecting with Armstrong , they began to plan how to improve the sound quality of their space without damaging the beauty of the interior.

“Most of our wall space was unavailable, and we weren’t willing to hang anything from the ceiling because it would block the view of the 100-year-old original hammered tin ceiling,” said Tarves. “The Armstrong team was great about understanding how to match design with acoustics. The mosaictype greyscale tiles above the bar really changed the space. It made a big difference with the room’s sound and those panels gave the wall life!”

Health of Lancaster Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital Emergency Department Expands to Serve Community

R E C O G N I Z I N G T H E I M P O RTA N C E O F E N H A N C I N G A C C E S S T O E M E R G E N C Y C A R E , Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health is investing in the future of health care by expanding Lancaster General Hospital’s Trauma and Emergency Department. A 40,000-square-foot expansion opens this summer, followed by renovation and opening of LGH’s existing emergency department roughly 18 months later.

When UPMC Pinnacle Lancaster closed in 2019, it placed additional demand on a department designed for 85,000 annual visits. By expanding to 95 beds, LGH will be able to treat up to 140,000 emergency cases annually.

“The expansion and subsequent renovation will enhance our ability to provide optimal trauma and emergency care for our region, in a modern setting that will positively transform the patient experience,” John J. Herman, CEO of Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, said.

As Lancaster County’s population grows, so too does the demand for access to quality health care. With the expansion, the healthcare system aims to enhance access to essential emergency care and enable patients to receive advanced medical treatment without leaving Lancaster County. In addition to stateof-the-art technology, the new and improved 95 bed emergency department will double the number of behavioral health

treatment rooms from five to 10, the number of trauma bays from two to four, and add 13 pediatric treatment rooms. These specialized treatment areas directly address the unique healthcare needs the department’s specialized clinical teams are providing for the community.

Another exciting part of this project is a new expanded hospital kitchen and the renovation of the servery and dining area. The current space prepares and serves roughly 3,500 meals a day for employees, patients, and visitors. The expansion will modernize LGH’s comprehensive food-service operations, increasing the capacity for the number of meals served by 20%. The new servery and dining area, expected to open in April 2022, will combine a restaurant-style format with stations offering handcrafted healthy and locally sourced food for patients, visitors, and employees.

“Hospitals nationwide are upgrading their dining offerings to emphasize healthful eating and wellness, as well as promote a sense of community through indoor and outdoor seating areas where patrons can relax, refresh, and rejuvenate,” stated Nick Del Valle, Director of Food Service & Catering.

Why we loved it: • Farm owner, Jesse, was one of our favorite parts of this experience! He takes pride in the farm that has been in his family for many years and loves sharing with visitors. You are truly supporting a local business owner who has opened his home to teach others about his culture and the impact of farms on Lancaster County.

• We loved being able to hold and feed the many animals on the farm—and did we mention that you get a watch a pig go down a slide? It’s a pretty pig moment.

• Jesse even gave us free produce to take home, but only if we picked the produce ourselves. Hard work is very important to Amish culture, and Jesse gave us a glimpse of how working a successful farm takes a family, like our team.

• It was great to experience Lancaster’s art of quilt making and see how it is still remembered and shared in our community— we hope the art of quilt making remains alive forever.

A boutique shopping experience new to downtown Manheim. Why we loved it: • This is a great chance to shop the many creatives, creators, and collectors here in Lancaster County—a mix of jewelry, antiques, clothing, and so much more.

• The arcade is a very “Instagram-able” location with decor that makes you want to strike quick pose. Girls Day, anyone?

• A fun addition to shopping here is listening to customers play the hand-painted piano, which was painted by a local artist. We even learned our very own Timbrel has been hiding her own piano playing skills—a pleasant surprise to our ears.

Why we loved it: • This museum is constantly changing its exhibit to give insight on the long-standing history of Lancaster. During our visit, we learned about “Lancaster through the Sixties” from the 1660s to the 1960s.

• As a female-owned business, we loved the exhibit’s highlight of elegant, patterned women’s fashion, similar to some pieces you may catch at our 101NQ location.

• Some pretty cool concerts took place in F&M’s Mayser’s Gym—like an Elton John concert for $5. Some of Vetzrel’s favorite songs are by Elton John so if Elton decides to return to Lancaster, she’d be willing to pay a little more for the opportunity.
