THERE’S NO BETTER TIME than now to start something new. If you’re like me, I use spring as the time to reset goals, clean out closets, and set my intentions for the coming year. In this issue, we’ve decided to celebrate the start of 2023 by showcasing fun ways to stretch our minds and pursue our passions.

Fresh Face | Welcoming new organizations to Lancaster City

Fresh Face: DIVE J A S O N M C K I N N E Y H A S A LWAY S H A D A H E A RT for Lancaster’s most vulnerable. During his nine-year career at Water Street Mission’s Teen Haven, Jason and his wife welcomed 15 displaced kids to live in their home over the years.

Through this work, Jason saw people who wanted to change their lives but lacked the resources and stability necessary to make sustainable change.

“I also started looking around the neighborhood and seeing other people who wanted to change their lives and didn’t know where to go,” Jason said.

In 2019, Jason and his wife purchased a house on Green Street in Lancaster’s

Southeast and transformed it into DIVE, a residential housing program for men in need of a fresh start. With life skills training, financial counseling, job search assistance, and convenient access to other local nonprofits, the residential home offers a place of stability for residents.

Now with two locations in Lancaster City, Jason hopes to use DIVE to meet people where they are and journey with them as they overcome significant obstacles.

“We all need help,” Jason said. “It’s okay to humble yourself and say, ‘you know what, I need help in these areas.’”

As a person of faith, Jason says a fundamental part of his vision is to create a culture of belonging among residents, providing a place where they can connect with God and one another, and he believes this starts with restoring a positive sense of self.

“It’s about learning who you really are, not who the world has told you that you are or what your background says you are,” he said. “But learning who God has called you to be and how to be victorious.”

With his affinity for true Belgian and Trappist beers, Bert decided to introduce Lancaster to the brews he fell in love with while exploring the beer scene abroad.

Modeled after classic Belgian cafes, Bert and The Elephant will make its home on King Street in Lancaster City. With Belgian bites, cozy tables, a 30-foot handcrafted wooden bar, and a hearty

selection of Belgian and American craft beer, Bert and The Elephant will be a dynamic space for people making their way downtown to shop, dine, or spend time with friends.

“I love to interact with people,” Bert said. “I love to teach people about beer.

Prior to his career in the restaurant industry, Bert spent 32 years working in IT. With an extroverted personality, Bert saw himself as an outlier in the field and wanted a career that would give him more human connection.

Fresh Face | Welcoming new organizations to Lancaster City

Fresh Face: Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum THE LANCASTER MEDICAL Heritage Museum is a treasure trove of rich medical history—a place for history buffs, future physicians, and local residents to expand their knowledge of the medical world and Lancaster County’s place in it.

Founded by the Lancaster City and County Medical Society, the origins of the museum date back to 1982, tucked away in the Burle Business Park for most of its existence. In December 2022, the museum launched its new era, now housed at the Flory Building at 410 North Lime Street. Over 14,000 objects were transported to the museum’s new home, and the team began curating stories from the various objects in the museum’s possession.

“The stories are more important sometimes than the objects,” Executive Director Kim Jovinelli said. “I can put a glass vile in a room with no explanation, but why is it important?”

In addition to exhibits on display, there is an archive of publications with new research and information, which is updated by Lancaster-based physicians, historians, and students.

The museum boasts extensive ophthalmology and dentistry exhibits, as well as forceps, syringes, and lancets donated by local doctors. Most notable of its items on display is an iron lung dating back to the 1950s, a remnant of the polio epidemic.

“We want to bring the medical history not just of Lancaster, but of the world here,” Kim said. “I hope this museum will be one of the go-to places in Lancaster County.”

“History tends to repeat itself, including medical history,” said Museum Board President Dr. Barton Halpern. “We hope people come to the museum, look at our history, and think about how we can do a better job.”

Tee-Up Your Fight Against Hunger

WAT E R S T R E E T M I S S I O N ’ S Drive Hunger Away Golf Tournament returns to Meadia Heights Golf Club for another year! On May 5, golfers from across Lancaster County will take a swing at hunger and make a lasting difference in our community.

In 2022, 8,760 individuals received groceries for their families at Water Street Mission and over 90,000 meals were served from the organization’s dining hall.

Our first collaboration was 28 years ago with Jack and the Beanstalk. We have written many family-friendly shows over the years!

How do you balance family-friendly content while keeping the adults entertained?

We generally try to write with the idea that we want the kids to have a blast and get caught up in the visual and physical journey while also writing a script that entertains adults with its dialogue, situational comedy, and moments of satire.

Book, music, and lyrics by Randall Frizado What is it like to make these familiar stories fresh?

I’ve loved the story since I was a kid—the action, the adventure. I wanted the chance to turn the story on its ear, look at it from a different angle, and to put my own silly spin on it.

How do you balance family-friendly content while keeping the adults entertained?

I think it’s important to never talk down to kids, so Robin Hood talks to them. While there is a lot of falling down, silly sword fighting, and goofy jokes for the kids, there are some sneaky asides to the adults to keep them laughing as well.

W

illonda McCloud is a bold and brilliant example of the power of mentorship. Like many women— Black women in particular—who seek to advance in the corporate sector, Willonda faced the challenge of others viewing her directness and honesty as too assertive for the roles she wanted.

Instead of being deterred from reaching for those opportunities, Willonda sought executive experience to learn how to lead in new environments while staying true to herself. For a year, she even shadowed a vice president while also managing a full-time position to build on her leadership experience.

When Willonda saw that Bright Side Opportunities Center was looking for a CEO, she met with her mentor, Cindy Stewart, multiple times a week to prepare for this career shift.

“I knew I was a leader and always felt like a manager, but Cindy helped me think like a CEO,” Willonda said.

“Directors and managers think about the process. CEOs think about the process, program, and how you’re going to pay for everything,” she adds, laughing.

Bright Side did a national search, but with her preparation and training, Willonda demonstrated the skills, knowledge, and grace that made her perfect for the role.

Nearly six years into the role, she has created a culture of mentorship at Bright Side Opportunities Center that is impacting generations of people in the community. A prime example is the STEM Girls Leadership Academy, which Willonda started through a national fellowship and the local STEM alliance.

She designed the program to empower middle school-aged girls to explore the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

“I’m sitting in my seat as CEO because of STEM and the mentorship I received, so for me, this program is a full circle moment,” says Willonda. Her commitment to authenticity, integrity, and growth as a leader is a beautiful example, especially for those girls, proving they can achieve anything.

way, and with an aging population, there is an immediate need for a new way of thinking about memory loss research, prevention, and care.

THE RISE OF

Dubbed the “Silver Tsunami,” the Baby Boomer generation will crest age 65 by 2030 and older adults will soon begin to outnumber American children for the first time in history­—resulting in more people having dementia.

It may be surprising to learn there is a tremendous knowledge gap in the fields of memory care and neurodegenerative diseases. Yet, this is a modern-day reality which leads to frequent misdiagnoses, scarcity of resources, ill-prepared informal caregivers (such as family and friends), and inexperienced medical professionals.

Annual Medicare funding for dementia will soon rise to trillions of dollars, and crippling out-ofpocket costs will plague younger generations of unpaid caregivers.

This culmination of mounting issues underscores one point —no individual, continuing care community, or healthcare system is prepared to face this alone.

A SOLUTION THAT WILL

W I T H A N I M PA C T reaching far beyond Lancaster County, the new Memory Care Center at Willow Valley Communities will be a community resource and hub for exploring and understanding brain health in order to make strides in the prevention, treatment, and care of people with dementia.

The Institute within the Center, open to many, will feature an assessment center, partnerships with prominent

academic medical centers, clinical trials, professional counseling, peer support, a dedicated training and education center, and a café—all of this to advance research, stave off decline, and improve the journey for everyone impacted by dementia. In addition, people experiencing memory loss while still living at home can remain socially and physically active through the Adult Day Center, which will also offer respite for caregivers.

B R E A K I N G T H E M O L D of traditional memory care paradigms, this new Memory Care Center will focus on quality-of-life, reducing the stigma, and enabling those with dementia to 66

live as normally as possible. Residents of the Center will be free to roam and experience the entire seven-acre Memory Care Campus, where they can selfelect to engage in programs that foster moments of joy and connections to their life prior to memory loss.

Fourteen households, each with 10 private bedrooms and the amenities of a typical home, will be centered around the Commons building. Multiple destinations that promote meaningful activity for

residents and visitors will maximize the potential for independence and socialization, as well as integration with daily routines.

A grocery store, bakery, ice cream shop, sit-down restaurant, dance and fitness studio, meditation room, salon and spa, performance stage, greenhouse, and expansive outdoor courtyard will offer the comforts of normalcy and the benefits of autonomy within a safe, secure environment.

THIS IS PERSONAL TO SO M A N Y. Carrying out the vision for this pace-setting Memory Care Center led to the formation of the Willow Valley Communities Charitable Foundation in 2018, which promptly launched the This is Personal capital campaign in 2020.

Philanthropy will enable specialized programming, globally recognized clinical and academic partnerships, community education, and top-level treatment.

To date, 700 Willow Valley Communities residents, grateful family members, business partners, and the local philanthropic community have supported the effort to raise over $20 million to help fund and empower the Center. This is a legacy project that will transform the lives of those affected by dementia for decades to come.

My experience with my father makes this personal to us. He was always a very positive, optimistic person. He was a servant leader with a heart for hospitality, evidenced by his years in the hotel and restaurant business. He loved to travel, tell stories, and to host both friends and strangers around his table for a meal.

Those strangers became friends by the end of the meal! He loved baseball, was a Phillies’ season ticket holder, and never missed a World Series. He loved life.

This all changed when he developed dementia. His outlook on life took a 180 degree turn, with an end to travel, ball games, fewer stories, and he was less optimistic about everything. He was in The Glen at Willow Valley Communities for the last year of his life, and he received excellent care there.

Our family and Willow Valley Associates have given to the Memory Care Center because we want to be part of this project’s mission—to transform the lives of those affected by dementia. This can be a gift of our legacy at Willow Valley Communities and worldwide, beyond our lifetimes.

Our hope is that we will fulfill our mission and vision—that the Memory Care Center at Willow Valley Communities will break the mold of how life with dementia is experienced. We will partner with research centers to establish The Institute for assessment, caregiver support, and training that models Willow Valley hospitality for multi-generations.

From our experience, everyone knows or will know someone experiencing dementia. Talk with them.

As time went on, I soon realized that each day with my father was the best it was going to get. At that time, there was no plan to break the mold.

I thank John Swanson for taking the leadership, with others, and forging a new path for dementia care. John said that we can do better, and we will.

LOIS MORGAN This is personal to me because my parents were living in a retirement community. After mother died, dad did well for several years, but he was lonely. I realized when he needed health care, I was totally unprepared to be a caregiver. He was eventually moved into a building where one hallway was designated for patients with dementia. The staff knew nothing about his background, what he did as a working man, or any of his interests and activities. We must change that.

Each year there are more people diagnosed with types of dementia, one of which is Alzheimer’s disease. The need for this Memory Care Center at Willow Valley Communities is great. It will be a place to feel safe, free, like home, for everyone’s peace of mind. I am aware of folks sliding into that gray area—family, and friends who will benefit from this project. I have become passionate about having it built to meet these needs.

My hope for the new Center is that freedom of movement, multiple activities, and getting outdoors will help to quiet the anger and frustration of the disease.

The ratio of caregivers will be much improved. The Adult Day Center will be a boon to those caring for spouses with dementia at home. I hope the Memory Care Center will be a solution to this problem that needs our attention.

Dementia is increasing in our communities as our population lives longer. People need to know more about the types of dementia. All of us want the best for the person we love and who is no longer the vibrant, intelligent, and loving person she or he was. I wanted to support a project which will fill a need for specialized understanding and care.

I hope the Memory Care Center will be so impactful and serve as a model that other communities will look to as they develop similar facilities to care for individuals suffering from dementia.

My interest in the Jane Moffat Mueller Adult Day Center is its focus also on the caregiver. Having a dedicated space with professional staff to relieve the caregiver for a morning or afternoon is needed in the community. The caregivers need a break from what can be a stressful environment, as Alzheimer’s becomes progressively worse and requires them to have greater patience and understanding.

PAUL A. MUELLER, JR. This is personal to me because I experienced Alzheimer’s disease with my wife and her family. Dementia impacts almost every family, although Alzheimer’s is best known. My wife’s mother was in her mid-60s when we married in 1955.

She could not plan our wedding due 70

to her “mental” condition. No doctor knew what to prescribe or how to treat her condition as she was physically so healthy. Years later, my wife’s six siblings suffered from Alzheimer’s. She was the last in her family to die of this disease.

Dementia is no longer a taboo subject, but it is still deeply personal. I can recall as far back as the 1930s that people thought someone was “crazy” or “mentally unstable” so that person was hidden and hardly talked about.

That time has changed, fortunately, as society has learned about dementia and its types, such as Alzheimer’s. My feeling is it is healthy and helpful to talk about the disease and the affected person. The caregiver needs support and understanding from family and close friends. I certainly benefited from sharing what was going on with my wife.

VESTA PHIEL This is personal to me because I had a front row seat as I watched my soulmate, my rock, my husband of 53 years descend into the abyss that is dementia. I saw this former vibrant, intelligent, humorous man suffer and fade as I felt helpless. No one should have to experience that heartbreak either as a patient or a loved one.

yet it happened. There was no rhyme nor reason to it, and it happened. In a perfect world, it wouldn’t happen. But if it does, the Willow Valley Communities’ Memory Care Center will be there to support. It is our best possible hope.

No one wants to think that it would happen to them or a loved one, but dementia does not discriminate. No one deserves it.”

It is my hope that the contributions to the Memory Care Center in Jack’s memory will help to ease the experience for others who take the lonely journey into dementia. Unfortunately, there are untold numbers of individuals and their loved ones who will have this devastating experience. It is my sincere belief that the new Memory Care Center at Willow Valley Communities will help to make the transition as smooth and comfortable as possible.

The journey of dementia is not linear.

There are moments of lucidity in which an observer might think the person is alright. However, those moments are fleeting. During these episodes, a place of supervised freedom can bring contentment to the resident. It will grant a degree of freedom not usually experienced by those in traditional memory care centers. There will be chances to breathe fresh air outside, to wander about, and to experience life as normally as possible.

No one wants to think that it would happen to them or a loved one, but dementia does not discriminate. No one deserves it. Jack was a wonderful, intelligent human being and certainly didn’t deserve it, and yet it happened.

This entire experience of how dementia has affected our family and friends has been a huge educational and life-changing experience for me.”

This is personal to me because it was exactly four years ago this week that my wife, Sandy, fell down the basement steps, striking the back of her head.

She was in New Jersey, playing with her great-grandchildren. Because of that fall, her early-stage memory loss became exacerbated, and she has required nursing care continually.

Our family, including the broad support and encouragement of Sandy’s children, feel it is the very best utilization of all our financial resources to contribute to this innovative Memory Care Center to ensure state-of-the-art care for Sandy.

While providing education about dementia and fundraising for this new memory care program, many of us plan to continue giving annually, recognizing the need to encourage more research to advance treatment and care for those afflicted with memory issues.

Sandy’s children, grandchildren, and I share several views and hopes for the proposed Memory Care Center at Willow

Valley Communities. Once completed, we hope Sandy qualifies for residency in the new community and will enjoy a renewed lifestyle that will enhance her everyday living experiences. Secondly, we look forward to participating in and possibly benefiting from any advances in ongoing scientific dementia research that may ensure comfort and understanding.

This entire experience of how dementia has affected our family and friends has been a huge educational and life-changing experience for me.

Naively, I believed dementia only impacted “other” peoples’ lives. It has taught me to be more alert as we age, to be more aware of subtle changes in a loved one’s aging process, and how to respond while providing benefit and support.

PAT & GEORGE DESMOND This is personal to us because we see such a need for an all-encompassing community to care especially for the needs of dementia patients. Overall, our hopes are for the beginning of a new, necessary, and integral part of health care—helping families to cope and understand this malady.

The conception, the initiative, the fundraising campaign, and the actual building, due to Willow Valley Communities’ outstanding notice in this strata, will open more hearts and minds to share in this understanding of something that affects most every family in some way.

DICK NARVETT This is personal to me because my father suffered from mental illness for most of his life. I know the effect that it has on a family, the stigma it carries, and the inadequacy of traditional treatment.

I’m compelled to support the Memory Care Center because it addresses one of the most significant mental health issues we face today. This project tackles the problem of dementia head-on and has the potential to become a game-changer.

My hope and expectation is that the Memory Care Center at Willow Valley Communities, along with The Institute, becomes a national role model in the areas of dementia research, prevention, training, and care.

Aging can have a damaging effect on our mental health.

It benefits all of us to have a better understanding of the factors that lead to dementia, and the personal lifestyle changes we can make to slow or prevent it.

“I went from working by myself to needing to work with a team to make the projects I was getting happen,” Tom said. “I quickly had to learn how to build a team, harness everyone’s individual talents, and keep everything moving together to get the job done.”

An artist at heart with a background in set design, Tom founded ATOMIC in 1994. The company specializes in live event production, design, set construction, and modular rental scenery.

Tom has grown as a leader and built sustainable systems and teams that will continue even when he is no longer running the show.

“I’m most proud of my children,” he muses. “They have taken up the gauntlet and are prepared and willing to take the idea of ATOMIC into the future.”

His children, Daniel McPhillips and Chloe Rich, are the President & CEO and Vice President of Brand Strategy,

There have been challenges in recent years—the live events industry was one of the hardest hit during the pandemic—but ATOMIC is resilient and has weathered those storms.

“Whether it’s theater or television or rock and roll, we have to build an effective culture in order to succeed,” Tom says.

“ATOMIC is working on building a place with a culture of trust and respect for other people. Our team believes that together, we’ll do great things.”

D AV I D A N D K A R E N S TA M B O V S K Y have a cinematic love story. Karen grew up in Lancaster County, the daughter of a Mennonite farmer, and David grew up in Massachusetts, the son of a Rabbi. Nearly 40 years ago, they had their “meet cute” on a plane.

They were sitting in separate sections, but it was love at first sight for David. He left his seat to talk to Karen and proposed before the plane landed. After about a year of traveling back and forth to see one another, they were married here in Lancaster.

The couple traveled the world and called many places home, and now they live happily-ever-after in retirement at Garden Spot Village in Lancaster County.

“Seeing how they cared for my parents, we realized more and more what we would need in a residential community, so living here now has been a real joy.”

Garden Spot Village is a licensed, nonprofit, faith-based continuing care retirement community. Karen’s parents lived at Garden Spot for years before she and David moved there in March 2022. “Seeing how they cared for my parents, we realized more and more what we would need in a residential community, so living here now has been a real joy,” says Karen. Their independent living apartment connects to a memory support suite where Karen’s mom lives. This unique arrangement allows the couple to care for their family while living engaging, active, and purposeful lives.

David enjoys long-distance open-water swimming and hopes to start a swim team at Garden Spot Village. “I like the community at Garden Spot,” David said.

“Every person we’ve met here, residents and staff, are kind people, and the amenities are beyond compare.” The energetic couple still travels the world together, but they are happy to come home to the Lancaster community they love.
