GIVING BACK Making a difference in the lives of others.

Giving Back: Willonda McCloud W I L L O N D A M C C L O U D is a community powerhouse. In addition to her role as the President and CEO of Bright Side Opportunities Center, she sits on multiple nonprofit boards and is a Lead STEM Fellow for the Lancaster STEM Alliance.

For more than fifteen years, Willonda has been showing up with a deep commitment to the Lancaster community and a unique investment in the future of Lancaster’s youngest citizens. This passion for young people and embracing science, technology, engineering, and math as a pathway to a bright future was born from Willonda’s own experience. At a very young age, Willonda’s mother had instilled in her the idea that a career in computer science was her destiny.

Willonda took her mother’s advice to heart and pursued the cutting edge dream. She graduated from the oldest

historically black college, Cheyney University of PA, with a BA Degree in Computer and Information Sciences.

Years later, Willonda’s background in STEM and affinity for non-profits and community initiatives, compels her to introduce young people to the opportunities that STEM can offer them now, and in their own futures.

Bright Side Opportunities Center has the mission to build a strong community by providing opportunities for people to thrive emotionally, physically, and intellectually. The Opportunities Center has become a beacon of health and wellness initiatives, offering programs to the community including yoga, conditioning, nutritional eating, and the silver sneakers program. Serving a population and a neighborhood that is often under-resourced, Willonda has built strong partnerships with other community organizations in

order to maximize the experiences of those who use Bright Side.

Willonda has paired her work as director of the Bright Side Opportunities Center with the mission of the LCSA. “I want my legacy to be centered around kids being able to have sufficient and sustainable wages,” she says. Willonda believes in helping kids figure out what they’re good at and to see paths from their talents and passions to a sustainable wage.

She credits her energy for Lancaster non-profits and young people to the understanding that we get farther when we are going together.

Willonda joyfully dedicates her talents, skills, and experience to mentorship, empowerment, community, and giving back.

The North Museum has expanded their educational offerings in 2020 in order to adapt to the needs of our visitors and community. As local businesses and the museum were forced to close in March, they launched North Museum @ Home, a multi-tiered resource program that includes learning packs, grabn-go STEM education boxes, virtual tours, and online-only content.

As the school year began, and parents and children adjusted to virtual learning, they launched School @ The North Museum, a program that pairs certified educators and a wide array of museum resources with students fulfilling their online schooling requirements in a socially distanced, limited capacity classroom setting.

GI V I NG BACK When the coronavirus pandemic hit, United Way of Lancaster County’s 211 service didn’t LOGO miss a day. The talented team of 211 specialists, like Patricia, have been serving the community from their homes.

UNITED WAY OF LANCASTER COUNTY Meet Patricia Espinosa-Vargas, a Quality Assurance and Training Coordinator with Pennsylvania 211 East at United Way of Lancaster County. In her 20 years of service, she has heard many heart breaking stories—from a single father sharing his fears of not having enough formula and diapers, to a sister needing to locate treatment services for her brother active in addiction.

These are all real-life conversations that those whom call 211 have LOGO with the Information and Referral Specialists served by the 24-hour/ 7-day a week community helpline.

The current pandemic has made Patricia’s job more challenging yet extremely rewarding, as she shares: “Our friends and neighbors are struggling with day-to-day expenses like food and utilities. The needs are so great, we want to ensure that those who call 211 know that help is out there. Knowing where and how to access community resources like food pantries, detox facilities, and shelters is just as important as the agencies that provide those direct services.

Lancaster County is rich with resources, and we are fortunate to have United Way to support our work in helping the community…one referral at a time.”

2 SECONDS OR LESS 2 Seconds or Less is a cultural awareness program for teens that develops social consciousness, knowledge and skills for leaders of the next generation. Through an action-reflection process, students learn about racial reconciliation, the history of oppression, cross cultural communication and more, and are enabled to become change makers in their chosen fields. The culmination of this experience is a study abroad trip where students pair with locals and experiment in inventing a new and more equitable future together.

FRIENDSHIP H E A RT G A L L E RY Friendship Heart Gallery & Studio, a creative arts program for Artists with Intellectual Disability and Autism, celebrates personalities and talents through free expression and collaboration.

While the Gallery doors remain closed at this time, the Studio is adjusting to new normals. It is the mission of Meals on Wheels to provide freshly prepared, home-delivered meals for free or at a reasonable cost to members of our community who are unable to cook meals for themselves. At Meals on Wheels, they are very fortunate and grateful to live in an incredibly charitable community. They are especially grateful for the community’s dedication to their mission in such uncertain times.

Between volunteering in the kitchen, delivering meals, and visiting with meal recipients, Meals on Wheels’ 400+ volunteers ensure the food security of more than 1,000 individuals every year. This labor of love and community extends beyond meals by providing the warmth of human interaction. Partnered with the community, the folks at Meals on Wheels understand how critical home-delivered meals are to the health and well-being of our most vulnerable neighbors. Their shared optimism and willingness to serve is changing lives every day.

Anchor Lancaster began 35 years ago serving a warm cup of coffee on a cold morning. LANCASTER SafeHouse Lancaster originally served as a safe house for peaceful protestors injured during the demonstrations against racial injustice and police brutality this past summer. SafeHouse Lancaster now serves as an education and advocacy organization focused on empowering young people to do activism work and educating businesses on more inclusive practices and social justice resources.

The local branch of the NAACP addresses systemic and structural racism and their impact on all communities. Advocacy, education, economics, civic engagement, legal redress, and challenging discriminatory practices has always been at the core of the organization’s intergenerational work since it was established in Lancaster in the 1920s.

Inequity and racial prejudice finds its way into the fabric of our society, creating disparities in our justice system, schools, businesses, and personal interactions. The organization works diligently with community

members, public officials, businesses, religious organizations, and schools in an effort to eradicate divisive policies, practices, and behaviors.

Overwhelming requests and input from community members, educators, and students alike prompted the organization’s effort to advocate for multicultural curriculum to be more reflected in American history.

Project Blueprint THE BLACK-BROWN BOARD EXPERIENCE United Way’s Project Blueprint is a long-established program run nationwide focused on building the pipeline for nonprofit and public sector board service amongst less represented groups. Think of it as The Black-Brown board experience. Anyone who has served on boards knows the depth of this problem locally. Nationally, less than 15% of board members are people of color. In order to manifest a transformed community, our focus must include investments in black and brown leaders in addition to the conversations around making space accessible.

United Way’s mission to mobilize the caring power of our community (the whole community) to achieve impactful, social change means building the capacity to serve and the capacity to receive the excellence present in Lancaster’s individuals and organizations. I grew up a black, bi-racial, bi-cultural kid in Lancaster’s suburbs. Our mixed-race children are growing up in the city. Race and culture development opportunities are city and county wide.
