I T ’ S M Y FAV O R I T E time of year in Lancaster City. The temperature is cooling down, Harvest Breakfast at Lancaster Central Market is right around the corner, and creativity is flourishing as theaters kick off their fall seasons.

This year, for our annual Arts & Culture issue, we’ve included a special section on technology, which we believe goes hand in hand with art. Creativity comes alive in many forms, and Lancaster is home to established technology companies like Cargas and Viocity, as well as fresh new startups. And something we’ve learned in the making of this issue— our creative city is investing in the next generation of tech through education for students of all ages—from Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology and our city schools to STEM programs at Bright Side Opportunities Center and many more. All this intentionality gives Lancaster City a creative edge.

So what does it mean to have a creative edge?

We picked this phrase because it describes the ability or power to create. It means having originality of thought, inventiveness, and showing imagination. In our opinion, Lancaster is poised to be the home for

creative entrepreneurs with that edge— individuals who bring new ideas to the table, think differently, creatively solve problems, and collaborate on what’s next.

Fresh Face: Busy Bodies Play Cafe O V E R T H E C O U R S E of her career in day care centers, Denise Evans noticed a startling shift in how children play.

Interactions that were once driven by imagination and creativity were slowly and steadily being replaced by screen time. She decided to use her concern as fuel for a new venture, Busy Bodies Play Cafe—an indoor playground where kids can satisfy their curiosity without a screen in sight.

AN ARTISTIC JOURNEY H OW D E L I G H T E D I A M to share the steps taken over the past decades to create an art-inspired office for our business. I was assisted along this journey with early artwork collected by my partner, Gene Gardner, his wife Anne Gardner, and Diana Crumay, an accomplished artist herself. By the time

I first arrived at the firm, Anne and Gene had works by distinguished Lancaster artists David Brumbach, Michael Heberlein, Robert Bitts, and Robert Andriulli. Those early pieces contributed an art sensibility to our offices. I had the opportunity to install substantially more artwork in our 30,000-plus-square-foot

repurposed offices, occupying space that once was an umbrella factory and later a tobacco warehouse, located across from Musser Park. I chose to direct my collecting activities to fill the walls with art from our local community of artists.

As I reflect on my artistic journey, I would like to share some memories.

Lancaster has a history of acclaimed artists, who then gave confidence to subsequent generations of Lancastrians to express themselves artistically.

Lancaster-born Charles Demuth, for instance, cut a path through the art world well beyond Lancaster. Because of artists like Demuth, Lancaster received visits from his friends, most notably Edward Steichen, John Marin, and Georgia O’Keefe—just to name a few.

Our corporate headquarters of Gardner Russo & Quinn is blessed to have an abundance of walls on which local art can be displayed, given the height and scale of our workspace. Our building, with its 12-foot ceilings, allows us to express our artistic desires with very big art. Indeed, Robert Andriulli and Robert Bitts have provided 10-plus-foot expressions of landscape settings hung throughout our offices, either solely or through diptychs and triptychs.

Inspiration for my artistic ambitions arose from the example set by Thomas Cook and Karen Heinle, with the extraordinary collection of art by local artists they installed at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute. Tom and Karen delivered on their promise that art should shape environments where people spend their days and carry out their responsibilities.

Art, once installed, continues to shape our emotions and our well-being over time. Tom and Karen shared a view, as did we, that fine art softens the edges of places, especially those intentionally sterile in all other aspects for medical reasons. Their artwork celebrates Lancaster’s remarkable collection of past and active artists. At Gardner Russo & Quinn, we hope our environment not only provides a stimulating, aspirational environment in which our colleagues work, but also inspires our own creative thinking and interests.

Continued from page 39 I must also recognize that Lancaster has been blessed with extraordinary teachers— Robert Andriulli, Dorothy Frey (successor to Andriulli’s decades-long teaching at Millersville University), Lou Schellenberg, Fred Rodger, Heidi Leitzke, Susan Gottlieb, J.D. Wissler (who was an early supporter of Mount Gretna School of Art), Art Harrington, Freiman Stoltzfus, and more—who have trained successive generations of accomplished artists. In reference to the hundreds of students he worked with over the years, Andriulli once said he taught them “how to observe carefully” and he taught them “how to make choices” of what to include and what to leave out, lessons which also apply to many life choices beyond art.

Another observation suggests just how elusive and unpredictable the pursuit of art can be.

Artists are constantly evolving. While chasing new perspectives characterizes art by so many, trying to force specific styles tends to fail as artists’ interests evolve. I am most impressed by how Andriulli aspired to teach his students not to be mimics, parroting his own style, but rather to be the best at their own style.

Artist Jeff Geib’s artwork has evolved over the years as he brought new expressions of long-standing subjects he captured. Geib specializes, for instance, in depicting tulips.

The images, both studies found within his extraordinary Codex and finished depictions of tulips, are amongst his most iconic works over the years.

Given Geib’s artistic obsession of painting tulips and our firm’s value-oriented investment endeavors, we were delighted when Geib accepted my offer to have him paint two large-format murals in our dining and gathering space that featured his large images of tulips. The message behind the murals is to celebrate history’s lesson about the great tulip bulb crisis that beset and destroyed Dutch financial markets in the 1600s.

Lastly, our collected works involve the role health has played for many of our most collected artists. Surely, the journey of two of Lancaster’s most acclaimed artists, Charles Demuth and David Brumbach, could not really be understood without knowing of the challenges they faced emotionally and physically, which shaped their art. Many of our collected artists have experienced

health-related disruptions, which produced some of their most poignant work.

Lancaster remains blessed by a local, vibrant community that appreciates its own history of support for the arts, as well as the presence of artists today who promise a future of robust art. Like us, Lancaster’s patrons support local artists, with many collectors making it a habit to expand their collections through regular visits to First Friday gallery-sponsored gatherings.

As we have curated our collection, associates at Gardner Russo & Quinn are finding ways to add their own flair by sponsoring artistic challenges. One way is through internal campaigns for photography, which some of our associates find immense pleasure in capturing and sharing their images.

At the same time, I remain on the hunt to continue to fill our walls with added art. My wife Gina and I are delighted to have the chance to continue collecting Lancaster’s extraordinary local art fare and continue shaping the lives of those with whom we work and with whom we live.

In closing, I thank our colleagues, the Gardners, for sparking interest. In addition, I thank Lancaster’s artists—those that have gone before us, those who practice today, and those future artists who will carry on this tradition of filling our community with such wonderful and uplifting imagery.

In the Breath paintings, Lancaster artist Jerome Hershey references a period when he had difficulty breathing.

Conceived through small ink drawings done at home while recuperating from open-heart surgery, this group of work incorporates allusions to the act of inhaling and exhaling. As in his Fields Series (2017-2021), these paintings also celebrate color and color relationships by layering brushstrokes on wood panels individually painted and then joined together. The result is a simple complexity that exemplifies Hershey’s ongoing quest for an optimistic image that is calming yet energizing, stimulating yet meditative.

Visual Artist, Photographer & Printmaker kschoryprints.com A Pennsylvania native, Karen Schory spent over 30 years living a dual life on the East Coast and the Midwest—one as an art and design professor and the other as a visual artist. Throughout her career, her prints were accepted into competitions across the country and her work was shown in prominent galleries in Philadelphia and Italy. After retiring from her time as an educator, she came permanently to the East Coast to Lancaster where she has continued to create, most recently in her home studio at Landis Place on King. Her work has primarily focused on photography and digital printmaking for the last decade. You can experience more of her journey by visiting kschoryprints.com.

Inspired Ideas Throughout her career, Karen has been inspired by both Rome and New York— the two cities she said most influenced her work. For a series of prints that paid homage to that influence, she captured photographs in each city over several years and transparently layered images over each other as a composite of time and space.

mily Landis is an innovative leader who encourages her community to search for the answers to life's big questions through STEM. As Executive Director of The Lancaster Science Factory, Emily is passionate about developing the nonprofit as a regional leader in STEM education.

Emily studied Biological Anthropology as a Graduate Research Fellow with the National Science Foundation. Her training and research in STEM was highly interdisciplinary, drawing on computer science, kinesiology, biology, and anthropology.

Before taking her current role, Emily worked at the National Geographic Society, funding scientific field research for six years.

While she enjoyed the global perspective and educational reach there, she was drawn to the community-based science center because she could translate science to the public and see the daily educational and emotional impact.

“When we talk to students at the Science Factory, a popular question right now is, 'How can I help solve climate change?'” she shared.

“I think they're motivated to study STEM to solve the big problems.”

Founded in 2008, the Science Factory’s mission is to inspire curiosity, creativity, and confidence by fostering an inclusive environment for hands-on STEM exploration.

“We want to inspire students of all ages to fall in love with learning and discover the world around them.”

In the 10 years under Emily's leadership, the center has transformed, doubling the size of the exhibit hall, the annual attendance numbers, the number of staff, and the annual budget.

The center houses over 75 fun and educational STEM exhibits for pre-K to 8th grade students, and recently added a Maker Space, Outdoor Courtyard, and iconic climber—the Sky Bridge.

This year, they are on track to set a new attendance record of 60,000 visitors, making the Science Factory a thriving STEM destination.

"We want to inspire students of all ages to fall in love with learning and discover the world around them,” Emily said. “Once they have that curiosity, who knows how far they'll take it?"

Emily and her team are making a difference in our community by encouraging the next generation of STEM leaders to build bridges toward a better future.

THE ART OF COMMUNICATION A K E Y E L E M E N T O F E D U C AT I O N AT M C C A S K E Y H I G H S C H O O L , the Media Studies and Communications Program has been teaching students how to be good communicators since the 90s. As technology has evolved, so has the program, which now boasts classes on critical channels like social media as well as a daily live streamed show.

Natalie Nolt, a Media Studies & Communications Teacher, has been a part of the program for 10 years when the school recruited teachers to help bring new life to the elective program for the digital age. By providing real life communication experiences and fostering community

partnerships, her and her fellow teachers are investing in the next generation of storytellers.

After the pandemic, a partnership began with WGAL which includes field trips, broadcast competitions, and shadowing media professionals. Around that time, students also took over the McCaskey social media channels under the guidance of their teachers, creating content to showcase all the classes and programs offered at the school.

“These students have found their place and found their why in the program,” Nolt shared. “Now their job is to showcase

More than 100 students are part of the growing program this year, shooting on industry level cameras, editing with premier software, and getting professional-level experience with audio and visual.

“Every kid comes a little differently to the program. Some have gone on to pursue a career in communications, and all of them leave with the knowledge of how to collaborate with a team and unleash their potential,” Nolt said.

Our students are learning how to troubleshoot, problem solve on what pieces they need, and understand how to be a leader. THADDEUS STEVENS COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY T H A D D E U S S T E V E N S C O L L E G E O F T E C H N O LO G Y (TSCT) is a public technical college that offers two-year accredited technical education. More than 1,300 students attend TSCT annually across 24 technical programs. Cargas is a longtime partner of TSCT and Cargas’ founder, Chip Cargas, currently serves on the Board of Trustees. One major impact is Cargas’ foundational relationship for the Computer Software Engineering Technology degree, where they aid in the strategic direction of the program. In addition, Cargas has provided TSCT students with internship opportunities, some of which turn into full-time job opportunities.

The foundation’s goal is to ensure the center has the materials, equipment, and funding to provide the best career training for high school students and adults. Through Nate’s position on the Board, Cargas has had the honor of supporting events including Fly on the Run, an annual banquet and fly-fishing tournament that raises funds for student scholarships and STEM grants.

TECH COUNCIL OF CENTRAL PA C A R G A S B E L I E V E S T H E D E V E LO P M E N T of advanced technology within Central Pennsylvania will expand opportunities to address underrepresentation in tech. Through the support of Tech Council of Central PA (TCCP), Cargas has supported STEM diversity initiatives, particularly those for women, as they helped found the Women in Tech mentorship program to support college students entering the workplace. The WIT Mentoring Program is a seven-month program that matches TCCP members who are currently working in tech with undergrad students representing the future of women in the tech industry.

CARGAS COMMUNITY FUND C A R G A S R E G U L A R LY C O N T R I B U T E S to the Cargas Community Fund, an endowment at the Lancaster County Community Foundation that awards grants to nonprofits focused on STEM diversity. “We love it here!” is a special series spotlighting Garden Spot Village residents and their love for Lancaster City and County.

W I L B U R A N D B E RT H O R N I N G have been valuable members of the Lancaster County community for over 45 years. Most notably, Wilbur served as mayor of New Holland for 16 years, and the couple spent much of their time serving in various roles for volunteer organizations.

Now, they are active members of clubs and service opportunities as residents at Garden Spot Village, a licensed, non-profit, faith-based continuing care retirement community.

“ I saw a lot of places, and nothing compares to the vitality we have here. It’s a very friendly place.”

The couple’s favorite part of living at Garden Spot is the integration of local activities they love with the residential community at the retirement community.

“I’m very involved in the local Historical Society so I wanted to stay in this area,” Wilbur explained. “There are so many volunteer opportunities here at Garden Spot, and there’s an organization for almost any interest that you could have.”

Their current interests include gardening, learning new technology through a computer club, and taking a balance class at the fitness center.

Bert can give a firsthand account of the unique difference between their home and other communities.

“I did a lot of volunteering through my church, visiting people living in other retirement communities,” Bert said.

“I saw a lot of places, and nothing compares to the vitality we have here. It’s a very friendly place.”

The couple is looking forward to continuing to enjoy activities and serving their community together at Garden Spot Village.
