A can’t-miss is the annual QVC West Chester Christmas Parade on December 6! Enjoy the sights, the sounds, the Holiday Village, and of course—Santa himself.

Before the parade, plan to take in the Gettysburg Address Contest hosted by the Chester County Community Foundation. Local students dress up as Abraham Lincoln and proudly recite the Gettysburg Address on the balcony of the Lincoln Building on Market Street. It’s an inspiring way to kickoff the season. This event was founded by Jean’s husband, Bob, 21 years ago!

Attend Brandywine Ballet’s performance of The Nutcracker at the Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall on the campus of West Chester University. It’s an annual tradition!

Go window shopping downtown. Take in the festive window displays, evergreen garlands, and roaming carolers all throughout town.
Stop in to Yori’s Bakery for a dozen of the most beautiful sugar cookies, then visit Carlino’s for their fabulous Petits Fours. They are perfect treats to put out on Christmas Eve.

SHOPPING SMALL IS A BIG DEAL. Every time we savor a handcrafted coffee from a locally owned café, find a great outfit or accessory at a neighborhood boutique, enjoy strawberries in season from the growers market, or choose the perfect handmade card to send to a friend, we’re making a choice that has a large and lasting impact—for us as consumers, for the local economy and community, for our friends and neighbors who are local business owners and artisans, and even for the environment. OF THE MANY GREAT REASONS TO SHOP LOCAL, perhaps the best is that it’s more fun. At local shops we meet talented artisans and entrepreneurs. We can enjoy touching, seeing, trying on, and tasting a greater selection of unique, quality products. Local business owners are passionate about selecting products that are often locally produced, one-of-akind, and from for-good companies. And local shops provide the kind of exceptional customer service and expertise—and friendly smiles—that aren’t part of shopping at a national chain or online. Shopping small has a ripple effect, too. When we support local businesses we become part of an ecosystem that helps the local economy to thrive. “When visitors enjoy the small-town shopping experience that downtown West Chester has to offer, they’re also supporting local family-owned

businesses,” says Malcolm Johnstone, Executive Director of the West Chester Business Improvement District. “Our shop owners then recycle their local dollars which help expand the local economy. The impact is much higher than when money is spent with national corporations.” Small local businesses are the largest employers nationally, and an amazing 91% of local business owners contribute to their communities by volunteering and making donations to nonprofits. Small businesses also tend to support other small businesses. They bring innovation and create more prosperous, entrepreneurial, and connected communities. Supporting these local businesses helps preserve West Chester’s historic and vibrant character and pride of place. Without them, towns fade into homogeneity. Shopping locally is also an eco-friendly choice. West Chester’s walkability
not only contributes to a better quality of life but also decreases the kind of pollution and habitat loss associated with the sprawl of outof-town shopping complexes. Buying from small businesses, especially those that source local products, reduces the environmental impact of the processing, packaging, and transportation of goods. West Chester boasts a diverse array of 88 restaurants and entertainment venues and 72 retail shops. Each and every one of these small businesses is the fulfillment of a dream and provides a living for the owners, their employees, and their families. They depend on customer support that extends far beyond Small Business Saturday. Shopping small is smart, relational, and a vote for community, diversity, and independence. Before we click online or drive to the mall, let’s give our local shops a chance to delight us.

GIVING BACK Making a difference by offering valuable resources to local students
Giving Back: The West Chester University Resource Pantry “ A G R OW I N G N U M B E R of college students across the nation are wrestling with food insecurity, and at West Chester University this issue affects students who are working very hard to complete their degrees,” says Associate Director for the Office of ServiceLearning and Volunteer Programs Pam Frontino. “It’s important that people understand how serious the issue is, and how hunger can impact students’ mental, physical, and emotional health, as well as their chances of graduating.” A large part of Pam’s job is managing the WCU Resource Pantry, which is four years old and provides students with access to non-perishable food items, fresh food, school supplies, toiletries,
career clothing, and winter coats. “The original concept for the Pantry came from a few dedicated and caring WCU staff who were already working with students expressing some level of food insecurity,” Pam says. After doing some research and collecting data, her office secured a grant to help establish the Pantry on campus. “The Pantry is run with the help of students who are hired as Pantry Ambassadors,” Pam says. They greet students, help them with intake forms, track inventory, stock shelves, and greet community partners who bring donations. In addition to providing resources,
the Pantry organizes cooking demonstrations, financial literacy workshops, and trips to the West Chester Food Cupboard and Wings for Success. This year they’re hoping to add community dinners and nutrition workshops. “Donations are always welcomed and appreciated,” Pam says. Items can be brought to the Pantry at 715 South New Street. Monetary donations can be given to the Pantry through the WCU Foundation, and supplies can also be purchased through the Pantry’s Amazon Wishlist. Visit wcupa.edu/pantry for more information.

A G I V I N G C O M M U N I T Y. As Janie Martin was folding laundry at the CURE Kenya Hospital in Kijabe, Kenya in October 2018, she was inspired to replace the threadbare hospital gowns. When she returned home, she shared her vision with others at Garden Spot Village. Before she knew it, the Mountain View Vision & Design Team had taken on the challenge of helping her to sew 96 sets of pajamas for children in Kenya. Residents and staff spent countless hours shopping for fabric and then

cutting, sewing, and ironing brightly colored pajamas. In September the pajamas were lovingly folded and placed in suitcases, which were hand-carried to Kijabe by members of the Garden Spot Village Travel with Purpose team. When the suitcases were opened in the CURE Kenya Hospital in early October, the pajamas were welcomed with smiles, laughter, and delight.
