RECENTLY, I WAS TAKING A STROLL through Marshall Square Park and walked past the masterful sculpture called “Friends” by Marty Long. I’ve seen it many times over the past few years but this time I was compelled to get close and really study it. I walked 360 degrees around it, taking in each enchanting little creature that has been so intricately carved into the wood. Crafted entirely by a chainsaw and sander, this piece of public art is such a gift. I often want to pinch myself when I think of all the access to art we have within a few square miles of our beloved downtown. From performing arts venues and art galleries, to maker studios and co-working spaces, we are a small town with big creativity. It's a place that believes art offers us new perspectives. And that dreaming and building creative spaces, of all kinds, is important to a thriving community. In this issue, we explore this idea of creative spaces. Behind every piece of art, you’ll find an artist who sought out a space in which to create. A space for inspired ideas, for experimentation, and for expression. Whether it’s the mirrored dance studio of Brandywine Ballet, the bustling kitchen at Carlino’s, or the colorful classrooms at Chester County Art Association, art comes to life inside these dynamic work (and play) spaces.
At Fig, we believe that creativity is a powerful force. Our own creative studio is a place for carrying out our larger mission of Design for Good. We’re thrilled to recently be named a certified B Corporation. AUTHENTIC Making blank walls come to life with every brush stroke.
Authentic: Erica DeHart “ I F YO U G I V E M E A S U R FA C E , I ’ L L PA I N T I T,” says artist Erica DeHart. She’s brought color and beauty to everything from multistory murals to canvases, cakes, and cars. “The medium is secondary,” she says. “If you can visualize it, you can make it come to life.” Erica grew up in the country, a sketchbook her constant companion. Her mom, who’s still her biggest encourager, told her to “Draw what you see.” She also allowed young Erica to paint on the walls—as long as she did a sketch first and repainted them afterwards.

The Master’s Baker founder Jerie Weldon took Erica on in the early days “on a trial basis,” and 26 years later Erica still enjoys hand-painting cakes for the award-winning bakery. After studying at Tyler School of Art, she worked in illustration and then found her niche in mural painting. Her work can be seen all over the West Chester University campus as well as in homes, businesses, schools, and churches throughout the tri-state area. Versatility is one of her trademarks, and she also enjoys doing trompe l’oeil, plein air, and oil painting. “I learn something new in every project and love building relationships

with clients,” she says. Erica brought her son and daughter up with paintbrushes in hand, and she loves empowering everyone—from children in schools to seniors in nursing homes—to collaborate, participate, and have ownership in the murals that beautify the spaces where they live, work, and study. “I feel blessed to be able to do what I love to do and what God gifted me to do,” she says. This year the nonprofit celebrates 10 years of service and has supported over 5,000 local women affected by breast cancer since 2009. Unite for HER recently announced an expansion of their Wellness Program to support women affected by ovarian cancer and will fund and deliver complementary therapies to patients in 2019.

“ T H I S I S A C O M I N G O U T F O R M E ,” says Natanya Sortland. She smiles and points to her white cane. “I’m a woman with a new accessory.” Natanya had persevered through a brain injury but didn’t know where to turn when she began to lose her vision. Then she found VisionCorps. Taylor, an occupational therapist, helped her with everything from organizing her refrigerator to taking medications. She also helped Natanya process the shock over how her world had changed, assuring her that she wasn’t alone and had a new life ahead. Taylor encouraged her to receive orientation and mobility training through VisionCorps as well— which introduced her to the white cane. The white cane gives Natanya autonomy, but using it takes courage. “People see me differently. The first time I used it was really hard. But I felt free— exhilarated,” she says. “VisionCorps has a solution for every problem someone with vision loss might have. They’ll come to your house and teach you the tools you need to be independent. They give you hope.” Natanya’s courage and sense of humor also sustain her. “The bright side is I can’t see everyone staring down at their phones, or watch people age—and I don’t know if I’m wearing a bad outfit!” she laughs. VisionCorps has been offering a range of free services to Pennsylvanians with vision loss for 92 years and now has a West Chester office. “We help people meet their goals to live full and independent lives,” says Amy Giangiulio, VisionCorps Marketing and Communication Strategist. “Please spread the word about VisionCorps,” Natanya says. “So many people with vision loss are giving up. O L D G L O R Y (Corner of High & Market Streets, Created by Harry Lewis Raul) Erected in 1915 to honor the brave soldiers and sailors from Chester County who enlisted in the Civil War, this historic statue stands at 19 feet high and is perfectly framed by the Courthouse behind it. Made of bronze, artist Harry Lewis Raul created the final design at a cost of $20,000 in the early 1900s. 2 . S T O N E R E L I E F S (10 North High
Street, Created by Harry Rosin) A four-panel sculpture looms some 80-feet above the sidewalk. Within the panels, fifteen carved figures are set in poses, each representing a point in history of European settlements. Nearly three years of planning, controversy, and compromise took place before the sculptures were finally erected in 1966. Next time you walk the first block of North High, look up and admire the view.

Near Minor & Everhart Streets) Life imitates art with “The Red Bench,” painted to honor local artist Horace Pippin and his last painting entitled “Man on a Bench.” The bench has been maintained in Everhart Park in honor of Pippin's important artistic and social contributions to our community. Pippin was known for his bold, colorful, and candid paintings that comment on race, religion,

war, and history. He became one of the first African-American artists to receive national acclaim.
4 . F R I E N D S (Marshall Square Park,
Created by Marty Long) Carved from a 125-year-old red oak and standing at 18 feet high, this imaginative sculpture offers 360 degree views and was brought to life using only chainsaws, sanders, and grinders. The friends you’ll find in the sculpture include a care-taking gnome, a fox, a hummingbird, and many more. Two owls sit perched atop the sculpture taking in the views of Marshall Square Park.
5. FREDRICK DOUGLASS M E M O R I A L (Outside Phillips Memorial
Hall, West Chester University, Created by Richard Blake) Frederick Douglass, the former slave, distinguished orator, journalist, author, and statesman is memorialized with this lifesize statue on the campus of West Chester University. Erected in 2013, this statue stands as an inspiration to the West Chester Community of Douglass’ legacy of social justice, bravery, and perseverance. He carries a broken rope to represent his freedom from the bondage of slavery and the promise of a better future. Benches circle the statue offering an opportunity to sit and reflect. By various artists) The banner project was first created in 2018 to celebrate the borough’s designation as a “Great American Main Street” and to publicly honor local artists and historical figures. See the current banners on High Street, East Gay Street, and West Market Street.

(On display in the lobby of Borough Hall, Designed by Julie Allen, Commissioned by WC PAC) West Chester’s new flag design was laid out with the six original streets— Chestnut, Gay, Market, Church, High, and Walnut—then tilted the grid on its true axis. The flag reflects the Borough’s central place as a cross-roads town and represents the streets where people shop, work, dine, parade, and play.

at Chester County Art Association) Some twenty years ago, a number of artists, many of them students, were commissioned to paint a Brandywine Valley scene on planters now gracing downtown sidewalks. Each one was adopted by a nearby business to share a bit of whimsy with visitors.

GIVING BACK Contributing to the vibrancy of our local arts community.
Giving Back: John Baker J O H N B A K E R ’ S S T U D I O paints a portrait of an artist, teacher, and world traveler who’s spent decades supporting the arts and the artistic community. Past his motorcycles (he’s down to two), an inviting bar area welcomes friends. Upstairs, a three-room workspace-gallery facilitates a natural flow for his work in multiple mediums. Throughout, his own work hangs alongside pieces by friends and colleagues, “like portraits.” John carries colors, textures, and experiences from his travels into his three-dimensional pieces, which have been exhibited and found homes in collections around the world. He attributes his sense of aesthetic balance and symmetry to his early work as a potter. He practices this balance in his life, too. Family time with his wife Sally, their daughters, and grandchildren, as well as his own studio time, ground him. He’s established deep roots in the creative soil of Chester County. After graduating from West Chester University, he stayed—to teach and then chair the art department—until he retired in 2015. This May, WCU awarded him an honorary doctorate. John continues to encourage former students and fellow artists, to install shows, and to serve on boards

including the WCU Foundation, the Art Trust, the Chester County Art Association, and the West Chester Public Arts Commission. He also supports the WCU gallery that bears his name through his endowment to bring diverse visiting artists to campus each year. “I failed at retirement,” he says with a smile. “But every day there’s something new and I have fun and love what I do.” “I’m very fortunate,” he says. “My whole life has been these wonderful experiences which resonate in my work and my everyday living.”

EXPANSION: Hybrid ORs and the future of medicine LET’S TALK ABOUT CARS FOR A SECOND. A traditional car runs on just a gasoline engine. A hybrid car, on the other hand, has that plus an electric motor. Both cars will eventually get you to the same location, but the mechanical process of getting there and the quality of the ride might be a little different. A hybrid operating room works similarly. In a traditional operating room (OR), a surgical team uses typical surgical equipment to perform a procedure. In a hybrid OR, it’s not just the surgical team and equipment—there are multiple types of specialists and many different types of equipment. For example, if a patient is having heart surgery, it might not be just the cardiac surgeon and surgical nurses in the surgical theatre—there may also be cardiac interventionists and vascular surgeons. A patient can be treated in either a traditional or hybrid OR. But just like the traditional or hybrid car, the surgical process and the patient experience might have some differences. In 2020, Chester County Hospital will be opening a new hybrid OR for heart procedures. If your heart surgery is performed in the hybrid OR, here’s how your surgery might be different than it would be now. IMAGING TESTS DURING PROCEDURES WILL BE QUICKER AND BETTER. Having imaging tests, such as X-rays or ultrasounds, is a normal

part of preparing for surgery. Sometimes, a surgeon will need additional images in the middle of a procedure—and in a traditional OR, those images can throw a detour into the surgery. In a regular OR, the surgeon will need to use portable equipment that’s brought in from another room. Taking time to bring in the equipment and set it up adds time to the procedure. The longer your procedure, the more time you spend under anesthesia—the medicine that makes you fall asleep so you don’t feel pain or remember the procedure. Anesthesia is generally safe, but it does come with risks of complications, such as breathing or heart problems. These risks increase the longer you’re under anesthesia. Also, longer durations of anesthesia have been associated with increased time spent in the hospital after surgery or having to return to the OR for another procedure. The hybrid OR has imaging equipment right there, which can mean fewer delays, and less time under anesthesia. The hybrid OR also lends itself to minimally invasive procedures, which usually means a shorter recovery time and less time spent in the hospital. “Patients are able to get back to work and their daily activities much sooner. It allows you to quickly go back to your regular life,” says Michael Barber, Senior VicePresident, Chief Operating Officer, Chester County Hospital.

YOU WILL BE MORE LIKELY TO HAVE MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY INSTEAD OF OPEN SURGERY. In a minimally invasive procedure, the surgeon will make a few small cuts, rather than large incisions. “With the hybrid OR, we will be able to accommodate even more patients who need minimally invasive procedures than we already do,” continues Barber. YOUR SURGEON WILL HAVE MORE FLEXIBILITY. Sometimes, surgeries don’t always go quite as planned. During a minimally invasive procedure, it’s possible that the surgeon will realize that they need to perform a more invasive surgery. Or, they may be using one mode of surgery, and decide that they need to switch to a different one. In a traditional OR, this could prove complicated. The surgical team could potentially need to switch you to a different operating room. However, the hybrid OR is equipped to easily turn from a minimally invasive to a more invasive operative setting, and from one mode of surgery to another. Your surgeon will be able to update their method right then and there which is better for the patient. “The hybrid OR gives you the best of both worlds—you get high-quality imaging, while also getting the space and visibility

of a typical OR,” confirms Mary Kehner, BSN, MS, RN, CNOR, Director, Surgical Services at Chester County Hospital. THE SURGERY WILL BE MORE PRECISE—AND MAYBE MORE SUCCESSFUL. One of the more challenging parts of surgery is making sure that patients are in the right position. The hybrid OR comes with a table that can be tilted and inclined to many different positions, allowing the surgeon to maneuver patients into the best position for a specific procedure. The table is connected to imaging equipment. This equipment recognizes and follows the table position—without the surgical team having to do a thing— and captures images of the surgical area from almost any angle. This is extremely important. Getting a patient to the perfect position and allowing the surgeon to come in at the right angle, as well as having pictures from all different angles, makes it easier for them to be more precise. And the better the precision, the lower the risk of complications, and greater the likelihood that the surgery will be successful.
THE OPERATING ROOM WILL BE EVEN SAFER THAN IT ALREADY IS. When you need surgery, you might be worried about your safety. And that’s perfectly normal. In any type of operating room, safety is the top priority—rest assured that no matter which room you’re in, the surgical team is looking out for your safety at all times. ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY ONLY GOES SO FAR — AND THAT’S WHY CCH IS HERE. When CCH's hybrid OR opens in 2020, they will have some of the most modern, advanced equipment in the region. But it’s not just the technology that makes their hybrid OR special. “In every operating room at Chester County Hospital, the surgical team works together seamlessly,” states Barber. “Everyone on the team—surgeons, nurses, technicians—has extensive training and experience, and works together to deliver the best care. And we can’t wait to bring those same levels of passion, expertise, and teamwork to the new hybrid ORs.”

“ A F L A G C R E AT E S a powerful sense of place for a community,” says West Chester Public Arts Commission chair Jimmer Breen. West Chester’s new flag, designed by Julie Allen, celebrates the Borough’s vitality, walkability, culture, and history. When the PAC sent out a Call for Art last year, “the response was overwhelming,” Jimmer says. A collaborative and multi-tiered judging procedure, which involved many different people at various stages, followed. From the top three entries, Borough Council selected Julie’s striking design in the Borough’s primary colors. Julie, a graphic designer who has lived in the area since 2010, was excited when she heard about the contest. “I love the town and I love design and also consider myself a bit of an amateur vexillologist (one who studies flags),” she says. After delving into West Chester’s history, she laid out the six original streets—Chestnut, Gay, Market, Church, High, and Walnut—and then tilted the grid on its true axis. These were both “fantastic design decisions,” Jimmer says. “The flag reflects the Borough’s central place as a cross-roads town and represents the streets where people shop, work, dine, parade, and play.” The six streets also echo the six Corinthian columns of the county seat’s historic courthouse. “I purposely left plenty of negative space and continued the lines outward,” Julie says, “because West Chester is always growing.” Jimmer is grateful to John DiGiuseppe, of the Fence Authority, for the idea, and to John Baker and all of the volunteer PAC members for their energy and efforts. The public’s engagement with the process, he says, demonstrates community interest in the impact and influence of art. “The flag adds another layer to the character, culture, and identity of our town.” The Fence Authority salutes the new West Chester flag. “We are proud to have been a part of the creation of this icon for our community, which we have been serving for over two decades.”
