Fresh Face | Welcoming new businesses to Lancaster City Owner Tyler Graybeal in his expanded new location

Fresh Face: Sweetish A L A N C A S T E R C I T Y S TA P L E , Sweetish’s new corner location is bringing even more sweetness to downtown. Tyler Graybeal opened Sweetish in 2019, and when he got the opportunity this spring to move to a bigger spot on North Queen, he jumped at the chance. The new-and-improved Sweetish maintains the iconic pick-n-mix wall, full of over 200 kinds of treats like sour watermelon skulls, raspberry licorice spirals, rum chocolate balls, and of course, Swedish fish. Still, Tyler will have you know Sweetish offers more than their sweets. “We have savory and salty candies,” he says, as well as Swedish pantry items like Kalles Kaviar and pickled herring.

With about double the space and the windows as the previous location, Sweetish now features a micro-cafe (the elderflower fizz is a must!) and a Scandinavian gift corner that takes the hygge way of life seriously—which is the Danish concept of coziness. Behind the checkout counter cafe is a massive set of apothecary drawers, which Tyler plans to stock with samples of the store’s seemingly endless chocolate varieties. And towards the center of the store is a custom-built Swedishstyle house, influenced by Stockholm’s Galma Stan, or “Old Town,” that serves as a bright backdrop to floor displays. In addition to these visual wonders, Sweetish is also working on bringing even more diversity to their products, 301 NORTH QUEEN STREET

with products from women-owned businesses, Swedish authors of color, and even local Pennsylvania handicrafts with the Sweetish spirit. With all the updates at Sweetish, here’s one thing that remains the same: Tyler’s passion for bringing nostalgia and joy to Lancaster and beyond. Watching customers crack open a cold Trocadero (which is a Swedish soda), stock up on licorice, or try something they’ve never had before—it’s all just a day in the life of a candy boss. anessa Philbert, CEO of Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County (CAP), is a vibrant example of leadership with her blend of confidence, kindness, wisdom, and style. She communicates her extensive knowledge of corporate psychology and organizational structures in a conversational tone that encourages and develops leadership in others. As an Afro-Latina, Philbert is the first woman person of color to be in the role of CEO in the organization’s 56 years of operation. The most incredible part of this story is how CAP has been a part of Philbert’s history in Lancaster. When Philbert moved from Brooklyn, New York, 20 years ago, she was a customer of CAP. Her first job in Lancaster was working for CAP, and after completing her Master’s degree in Strategic Leadership and Organizational Development, many years of professional development, and promotions to various leadership roles, Philbert was appointed CEO in 2019. Philbert serves on the Boards of Lancaster City Alliance and the

Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, and she is the President and Chair of Lancaster Equity. Philbert also facilitates training and keynote speaking with Work Wisdom, an organizational psychology practice dedicated to transforming mindsets and behaviors for optimal workplace performance. “I believe that we’re all teachers and learners, and a good leader can take on the right posture at the right moment,” says Philbert. Philbert believes the organizations she partners with can bridge the gap and connect with every Lancaster resident by appealing to the fundamental elements of humanity. “If we agree that we all want to thrive and flourish as parents, neighbors, workers, and business owners as Democrats or Republicans…universally, I think Lancaster is big enough (and small enough) to do something revolutionary,” she said. Like every great leader, Philbert encourages her community to imagine a brighter future and a better tomorrow.

Fresh Face: Cafe One Eight ANTHONY VEGA & DEMI S M E LT Z E R never thought they’d own a café, but after Anthony’s brother, Rob Vega, passed away in 2013, Anthony made a commitment to honor his brother’s legacy, using his dream of becoming an entrepreneur to keep his memory alive. After a career in manufacturing, Anthony decided it was time for a change. When purchasing Cafe One Eight came on his radar, Anthony felt this could be the opportunity to finally bring together his dreams of owning a business and honoring his brother. Rob was a McCaskey High graduate with roots in the Lancaster community, and Anthony saw these roots reflected in the values Cafe One Eight stands for. “When we were looking for a business to purchase, we had a really good feeling

about this,” Anthony said. “There was a lot of positivity around it, and that’s what I feel when I think about my brother.” The ownership of Cafe One Eight was transferred to Anthony and Demi in February 2022. As they settled in, they were astounded by the overwhelming support from their customers and staff. “There are certain people that start their day here every single day, which is amazing,” Demi said. “They could go to a drive-through, but they choose to come here and start their day with our staff and our coffee. I feel so fortunate to know [the staff too] and be a part of their story, just as much as they’re part of ours.” Anthony and Demi believe in supporting the community through their business, finding ways to elevate fellow business owners and build a

culture of collaboration with other local brands. From the coffee served to the meals prepared, each menu item is crafted with fresh ingredients sourced from local purveyors. “We strongly stand behind the idea of gather and nourish and the same principles that [have always been] in place,” Demi said. Anthony added, “We didn’t purchase this business just for the business side of things. In 1875, Ulysses S. Grant was President of the United States, Thomas Edison was on the cusp of inventing electric light, and Miesse Candies had just started making the most delicious sweet treats. As one of the oldest continuously operating confectionery companies in the United States, Miesse knows a thing or two about confections and chocolate. “I bought Miesse because it was part of our family. My grandmother always had nonpareils in the candy dish,” Head Confectioner and Proprietor Tracy Artus said. E Miesse Candies first brick & mortar at 48 North Queen Street in 1878.

Miesse has a rich history in Lancaster County, tracing back to a time before there were paved roads or telephones. Miesse’s first storefront was located on North Queen Street. But the company didn’t start out by serving up the delicious chocolate treats it’s now known for. In the early days, Daniel Miesse took his horse-drawn

wagon through the Lancaster streets to sell caramels, taffies, nougats, and their house-made ice cream. At the time, chocolate was generally thought of as an aristocratic treat and was just starting to become more accessible to the public. When Daniel’s son returned from his time as a medic during World War I, he convinced his dad to try coating his confections in chocolate, just as he had witnessed abroad in France. The new treats, covered in Wilbur chocolate, were a huge hit, and the company quickly outgrew its first location, moving production to 735 Lafayette Street in Lancaster City in 1956. In the 50 years following, the company grew and Miesse became the goto spot for Lancaster residents to

satisfy their sweet tooth. In 2006, a fire devastated the production facility causing approximately $2.25 million in damages. After a pause in production and a period of rebuilding, Miesse was back in business. The survival of Miesse was a testament not only to the resilience of the company, but the supportive community that rallied around their beloved chocolate shop. It was during this time of rebuilding Tracy began working part-time for Miesse in 2010 and partnered into the company

later that year. On January 1, 2011, Tracy purchased the historic confectionery, and in 2013, Tracy acquired a new retail and production space at its current location of 118 North Water Street, bringing Miesse confections to a central location in Lancaster City. “Everybody loves Miesse,” Tracy said. “Everybody walks in the door, and they have some story about their grandmother, their mother, their dad, their uncle, somebody who used to work at Miesse at some point in time because it was such a huge company.” Miesse holds a special place in the hearts of chocolate lovers across the county, and a new chapter is on the horizon for the confectionery. In 2018, Miesse revived a 1935 Liquid Carbonic soda fountain that serves ice cream, cream sodas, egg creams, banana splits, and milkshakes all year long. With this equipment installed in the front of the shop, Miesse has brought back an authentic ice cream parlor feel to Downtown Lancaster, making this the perfect place for folks to escape the heat of summer and enjoy a nostalgic sweet treat year-round.

Fresh Face: Vital Theatre Company STEPHEN SUNDERLIN’S F I R S T B R U S H W I T H T H E AT R E was during a public speaking experience in high school. But it wasn’t the spotlight that hooked him—it was the sweaty palms and shaky knees. “I’ve never been more nervous in my life,” Stephen said. “I never wanted to have that experience again, so I joined a speech class. The speech teacher was also the drama teacher, and she put me in a play.” The rest is history. Founding Producing Artistic Director, Stephen has been part of Vital Theatre since its formation in 1999, when he and three additional theatre professionals came together to create their own company. “Theatre was a vital part of our lives, and we felt that theatre should be

a vital part of other people’s lives,” Stephen said. The team at Vital Theatre knows that a small seed of creativity can grow into a life infused with curiosity, wonder, and delight, and they plant those seeds into shows geared towards children and their families. Performing predominately original shows, Vital Theatre made a name for itself as a family theatre in 2008 after the creation of their hit show Pinkalicious The Musical, which still tours nationally. After 24 years of producing shows in New York City, Stephen wondered if Vital Theatre’s success could be replicated in other locations. When Stephen’s daughter and son-in-law moved to the Lancaster area four years ago, he began visiting and noticed a

rich arts community in the area. He started dreaming of what it could look like for Vital Theatre to perform shows for children and families in Lancaster. In May, Vital Theatre put these dreams into action and welcomed the first Lancaster County audience to its premier show at Mickey’s Black Box in Lititz. “We’ve had a huge impact on our audience, as they come back again and again,” Stephen said. “If one person is inspired, if one person is motivated, if one person is touched by our work, then we feel like what we’ve done is vital.” For a list of Vital Theatre’s upcoming events and shows, visit vitaltheatre.org.

60 years of sweet music I N 1 9 5 7 , Civitas (then known as Sertoma) came together with an idea to bring beautiful music to Lancaster’s Long’s Park through the construction of an amphitheater. With the expertise of Wickersham Construction & Engineering, the amphitheater was built and dedicated in 1962, kicking off a 60-year history of musical arts and culture for the community. usable electricity. About 20% of the steam is piped to an adjacent business (Perdue AgriBusiness) where it is utilized for soybean processing. The steam replaces the need for fossil fuels. And that’s not the end of the story. The ash from the WTE process still contains ferrous and nonferrous metals like pans, gears, utensils, bicycles, tin cans, and mattress springs. Magnets and eddy currents remove the metals which are then sent to recycling markets. LCSWMA is extracting and recycling approximately 10,000 tons of metal a year from the ash— metal that doesn’t end up in the landfill!

What are the benefits to Lancaster County?

By combusting nearly 1,200 tons of trash a day in Lancaster County, LCSWMA is generating about 36 megawatts of electricity at a given time. The facility itself consumes six of those megawatts and 25 are sold into the local power grid—enough to power more than 20,000 Lancaster County homes and businesses! The remaining steam is sent to Perdue AgriBusiness. Another benefit is land preservation. The waste-to-energy process reduces the waste

volume by 90%. That means only about 10% of the MSW (now in the form of ash) ends up in the landfill. Although landfilling all MSW is cheaper and the most common method across the country, it requires a massive amount of land and produces harmful greenhouse gas (methane).

The pit is capable of holding nearly 9,000 tons of garbage.

LCSWMA’s 96-acre landfill in Manor Township began operating in 1989. Without waste-to-energy, Lancaster County likely would have needed two more landfills of the same size. In fact, the existing Frey Farm Landfill would have reached capacity in 2001. Although the combustion process is not emission-free, emissions from the WTE facility are strictly and consistently monitored by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and publicly reported. LCSWMA has an outstanding history of operating below the DEP’s permitted emissions limits, and the facility operates up to 99% below federal emissions standards.

The waste is combusted by burning at up to 2,200 degrees.

For our tasting, we got a list of 13 wines with information about flavor notes and food pairings. For our brew tour, we enjoyed three courses paired with Isaac’s very own draft beers: Isaac’s German-style pilsner, Hartman’s Heroes paired with a bowl of cheddar broccoli soup; Isaac’s Belgian-style witbier aged on blueberries paired perfectly with the Sonoma salad; and Isaac’s American amber, the Dutch Ambler Rambler, paired with the Mallard sandwich— piled with roast beef, bacon, cheddar cheese, and mushrooms on a pretzel roll. Each course was intentional and elevated the delicious flavors of both the beer and the food.
