Lancaster City’s

Secret Sauce

A note from Fig

W E LC O M E T O S U M M E R! We love it here, and if you’re reading Fig, we know you do too.

So what’s the secret sauce? What sets Lancaster apart from other small cities with local charm? I asked our team, and they mentioned everything from diverse experiences and great food to an atmosphere ripe for creativity and the goodness of the people. All great secret sauces are a combination of ingredients mixed together to create something delicious—something magical that can’t be found anywhere else. In this issue, we bring you special food, places, and people that collectively make Lancaster’s unique secret sauce. You’ll find summer activities, new small businesses, and lots and lots of scrumptious food and inventive drinks. Grab a friend and use our Table for Two suggestions for a romantic evening or a casual picnic. We’ll introduce you to local food makers

who are reinventing traditional favorites and dynamic business leaders who are blazing their own unique paths. Savory or Sweet? We couldn’t decide which to feature on the cover so, of course, we chose both. Whether you have the sweet cake from Lancaster Cupcake or the savory arepas from Chellas in your hand right now, this issue of Fig is chock full of Lancaster goodness to be enjoyed all season long. And what do we love almost as much as food? Dogs! In our first ever pet section, we’ll introduce you to local businesses who cater to our furry friends. You’ll find them when you see the adorable puppies on page 21—that’s Hazel and Josie, the newest members of our Fig family.

Cheers to a memorable summer! Deborah Brandt & the Fig Team

Fresh Face | Welcoming new businesses to Lancaster City Owner Tyler Graybeal in his expanded new location

Fresh Face: Sweetish A L A N C A S T E R C I T Y S TA P L E , Sweetish’s new corner location is bringing even more sweetness to downtown. Tyler Graybeal opened Sweetish in 2019, and when he got the opportunity this spring to move to a bigger spot on North Queen, he jumped at the chance. The new-and-improved Sweetish maintains the iconic pick-n-mix wall, full of over 200 kinds of treats like sour watermelon skulls, raspberry licorice spirals, rum chocolate balls, and of course, Swedish fish. Still, Tyler will have you know Sweetish offers more than their sweets. “We have savory and salty candies,” he says, as well as Swedish pantry items like Kalles Kaviar and pickled herring.

With about double the space and the windows as the previous location, Sweetish now features a micro-cafe (the elderflower fizz is a must!) and a Scandinavian gift corner that takes the hygge way of life seriously—which is the Danish concept of coziness. Behind the checkout counter cafe is a massive set of apothecary drawers, which Tyler plans to stock with samples of the store’s seemingly endless chocolate varieties. And towards the center of the store is a custom-built Swedishstyle house, influenced by Stockholm’s Galma Stan, or “Old Town,” that serves as a bright backdrop to floor displays. In addition to these visual wonders, Sweetish is also working on bringing even more diversity to their products, 301 NORTH QUEEN STREET

with products from women-owned businesses, Swedish authors of color, and even local Pennsylvania handicrafts with the Sweetish spirit. With all the updates at Sweetish, here’s one thing that remains the same: Tyler’s passion for bringing nostalgia and joy to Lancaster and beyond. Watching customers crack open a cold Trocadero (which is a Swedish soda), stock up on licorice, or try something they’ve never had before—it’s all just a day in the life of a candy boss. After a stop in their new space, don’t forget to stay up-to-date with Sweetish on their website, Instagram, and YouTube channel (where you’ll find the Sweetish crew taste testing unique foods and serving up wild reactions). 717.621.2920

Fresh Face: EpitomeFit H E A LT H C O A C H Neo Cortex believes it’s time for a change in the fitness industry. For years, many gyms and personal trainers have taken a onesize-fits-all approach that has left many first-time gym-goers feeling intimidated by entering a fitness space and left regular gym goers without the tools they need to put their health at the forefront of their workout regimen. But at EpitomeFit, your health is their #1 focus. “We provide top notch coaching in movement, nutrition, and lifestyle to help our members achieve the health they deserve,” says Coach Neo. “The experience here is comfortable, friendly, and inviting. If you’re someone who’s never stepped foot in a gym, this

place is for you.” Everyone who visits EpitomeFit receives a warm greeting from a member of the team, currently comprised of coaches Neo, Sherri, and Ellie. Along with health coaching, they also offer boxing, yoga, qigong, and a class Coach Neo created called Restoration of Natural Movement. EpitomeFit tailors their memberships to meet clients’ unique needs. The only “Fitness After 40” specialists in the region, they meet with each prospective client individually to understand their specific lifestyle habits and wellness needs. After careful evaluation, they recommend a program that is mapped out and broken down into small steps to make it easier for clients to execute.

“I tell people, ‘Look, don’t try to take huge steps. Just take a step. And then another. And then another.’ Next thing you know you’re moving towards your goal,” he said. Clients have seen incredible results from nutrition counseling and movement training that go beyond weight loss and building muscle. Coach Neo wants you to know this is not your average gym—it is a brand-new experience in fitness, health, and wellness. If you are looking to become a healthier version of you, visit the EpitomeFit website at epitomefit.com. And don’t forget to follow them on Facebook and Instagram at @epitomefit!

The future is BRIGHT V

anessa Philbert, CEO of Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County (CAP), is a vibrant example of leadership with her blend of confidence, kindness, wisdom, and style. She communicates her extensive knowledge of corporate psychology and organizational structures in a conversational tone that encourages and develops leadership in others. As an Afro-Latina, Philbert is the first woman person of color to be in the role of CEO in the organization’s 56 years of operation. The most incredible part of this story is how CAP has been a part of Philbert’s history in Lancaster. When Philbert moved from Brooklyn, New York, 20 years ago, she was a customer of CAP. Her first job in Lancaster was working for CAP, and after completing her Master’s degree in Strategic Leadership and Organizational Development, many years of professional development, and promotions to various leadership roles, Philbert was appointed CEO in 2019. Philbert serves on the Boards of Lancaster City Alliance and the

Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, and she is the President and Chair of Lancaster Equity. Philbert also facilitates training and keynote speaking with Work Wisdom, an organizational psychology practice dedicated to transforming mindsets and behaviors for optimal workplace performance. “I believe that we’re all teachers and learners, and a good leader can take on the right posture at the right moment,” says Philbert. Philbert believes the organizations she partners with can bridge the gap and connect with every Lancaster resident by appealing to the fundamental elements of humanity. “If we agree that we all want to thrive and flourish as parents, neighbors, workers, and business owners as Democrats or Republicans…universally, I think Lancaster is big enough (and small enough) to do something revolutionary,” she said. Like every great leader, Philbert encourages her community to imagine a brighter future and a better tomorrow.

Fresh Face | Welcoming new businesses to Lancaster City

Fresh Face: Cafe One Eight ANTHONY VEGA & DEMI S M E LT Z E R never thought they’d own a café, but after Anthony’s brother, Rob Vega, passed away in 2013, Anthony made a commitment to honor his brother’s legacy, using his dream of becoming an entrepreneur to keep his memory alive. After a career in manufacturing, Anthony decided it was time for a change. When purchasing Cafe One Eight came on his radar, Anthony felt this could be the opportunity to finally bring together his dreams of owning a business and honoring his brother. Rob was a McCaskey High graduate with roots in the Lancaster community, and Anthony saw these roots reflected in the values Cafe One Eight stands for. “When we were looking for a business to purchase, we had a really good feeling

about this,” Anthony said. “There was a lot of positivity around it, and that’s what I feel when I think about my brother.” The ownership of Cafe One Eight was transferred to Anthony and Demi in February 2022. As they settled in, they were astounded by the overwhelming support from their customers and staff. “There are certain people that start their day here every single day, which is amazing,” Demi said. “They could go to a drive-through, but they choose to come here and start their day with our staff and our coffee. I feel so fortunate to know [the staff too] and be a part of their story, just as much as they’re part of ours.” Anthony and Demi believe in supporting the community through their business, finding ways to elevate fellow business owners and build a

culture of collaboration with other local brands. From the coffee served to the meals prepared, each menu item is crafted with fresh ingredients sourced from local purveyors. “We strongly stand behind the idea of gather and nourish and the same principles that [have always been] in place,” Demi said. Anthony added, “We didn’t purchase this business just for the business side of things. We purchased it because we believe in what has been created here and in maintaining it.” Swing by Cafe One Eight this summer and welcome Anthony and Demi— and don’t forget to grab a delicious bite or a seasonal brew.

Fresh Face | Welcoming new businesses to Lancaster City

Fresh Face: Lisa Torba, J. Hilburn F R O M T- S H I RT S T O T U X E D O S , Lisa Torba is bringing her expertise as a J. Hilburn stylist to Downtown Lancaster in a luxurious new studio space.

Lisa discovered most men don’t know where to start or have a hard time finding clothes that fit off the rack, and that’s where she comes in.

J. Hilburn is a custom-made menswear company that offers high-quality styles to fit a range of lifestyle needs. Clients work with personal stylists for a tailored experience, and J. Hilburn equips stylists with all the tips, tools, and tricks to transform clients’ wardrobes and the way they see fashion. Ease, fit, and function—how you look is her business!

Lisa has built an impressive career with J. Hilburn, traveling to meet clients wherever is convenient for them—whether in their home, in a coffee shop, or even over Zoom—and turned her living room into a makeshift studio space in the meantime.

An independent stylist for the company since 2016, Lisa previously worked in womenswear but kept hearing women she worked with complain about helping their boyfriends or husbands find clothes. “I went looking for the unmet need,” Lisa said. “And the unmet need is menswear.”

When J. Hilburn started a model of stylist-owned studios, Lisa knew it was time for a dedicated space for her business—complete with interactive styling technology, private dressing rooms, and a stylish lounge for sipping bourbon during appointments. But don’t worry, she will still meet you where you are most comfortable. Lisa starts with a discovery call to 34 NORTH QUEEN STREET

AT C O M M U N I T Y F I R S T F U N D, financial equity has been at the heart of what they do for the past 30 years. Through their work in financial services, affordable housing, and small business resources, Community First Fund is leveling the playing field for the clients they serve, many of whom are persons of color, women, and immigrants. As a private and independent non-profit Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), Community First Fund serves 20 counties in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, creating positive change in each community where they work through the services they offer. One of the key ways they help clients build wealth and financial stability is

providing entrepreneurs with loans to start or expand their businesses, with over 5,592 loans financed since they began in 1992. In just Lancaster County alone, they’ve financed over $31 million in loans in the past five years. But the work being done through Community First Fund is deeper than just a loan—it involves investing in the knowledge and confidence of the individuals they walk alongside. “Our clients often come to us after being rejected by traditional banks. We guide them through our lending process to get them the capital they need to launch or expand their business. In 1875, Ulysses S. Grant was President of the United States, Thomas Edison was on the cusp of inventing electric light, and Miesse Candies had just started making the most delicious sweet treats. As one of the oldest continuously operating confectionery companies in the United States, Miesse knows a thing or two about confections and chocolate. “I bought Miesse because it was part of our family. My grandmother always had nonpareils in the candy dish,” Head Confectioner and Proprietor Tracy Artus said. E Miesse Candies first brick & mortar at 48 North Queen Street in 1878.

Miesse has a rich history in Lancaster County, tracing back to a time before there were paved roads or telephones. Miesse’s first storefront was located on North Queen Street. But the company didn’t start out by serving up the delicious chocolate treats it’s now known for. In the early days, Daniel Miesse took his horse-drawn

66 118 NORTH WATER STREET 717.392.6011 MIESSECANDIES.COM

wagon through the Lancaster streets to sell caramels, taffies, nougats, and their house-made ice cream. At the time, chocolate was generally thought of as an aristocratic treat and was just starting to become more accessible to the public. When Daniel’s son returned from his time as a medic during World War I, he convinced his dad to try coating his confections in chocolate, just as he had witnessed abroad in France. The new treats, covered in Wilbur chocolate, were a huge hit, and the company quickly outgrew its first location, moving production to 735 Lafayette Street in Lancaster City in 1956. In the 50 years following, the company grew and Miesse became the goto spot for Lancaster residents to

satisfy their sweet tooth. In 2006, a fire devastated the production facility causing approximately $2.25 million in damages. After a pause in production and a period of rebuilding, Miesse was back in business. The survival of Miesse was a testament not only to the resilience of the company, but the supportive community that rallied around their beloved chocolate shop. It was during this time of rebuilding Tracy began working part-time for Miesse in 2010 and partnered into the company

later that year. On January 1, 2011, Tracy purchased the historic confectionery, and in 2013, Tracy acquired a new retail and production space at its current location of 118 North Water Street, bringing Miesse confections to a central location in Lancaster City. “Everybody loves Miesse,” Tracy said. “Everybody walks in the door, and they have some story about their grandmother, their mother, their dad, their uncle, somebody who used to work at Miesse at some point in time because it was such a huge company.” Miesse holds a special place in the hearts of chocolate lovers across the county, and a new chapter is on the horizon for the confectionery. In 2018, Miesse revived a 1935 Liquid Carbonic soda fountain that serves ice cream, cream sodas, egg creams, banana splits, and milkshakes all year long. With this equipment installed in the front of the shop, Miesse has brought back an authentic ice cream parlor feel to Downtown Lancaster, making this the perfect place for folks to escape the heat of summer and enjoy a nostalgic sweet treat year-round.

We are proud to revive this historic brand and offer our ice cream for sale at Miesse Candies & Ice Cream Parlor. Celebrating the Pennsylvania heritage with another historic brand is exciting for all of us!” -INGRID NATALE, owner of Pensupreme

Miesse Candies & Ice Cream Parlor is proud to serve ice cream from another local historic company, Pensupreme, in their parlor. This premium ice cream is all natural, sustainably sourced, grass-fed, and free from artificial coloring, growth hormones, and antibiotics. For Tracy, it only made sense to bring together these companies and merge both the legacy and future of the two companies, in part because she has fond memories of enjoying their ice cream as a kid. “Everything is personal, and that’s what you hear every time somebody walks in our downtown shop and parlor,” Tracy said. “We love our community.”

Fresh Face: Hempfield Apothecary H E M P F I E L D B O TA N I C A L S is bringing its unique approach to plant-based medicine into the spotlight with a new wellness space, Hempfield Apothecary, on the corner of Prince and Walnut streets. Co-owners Heather and Nathan Kreider are excited to usher the business into a new era by opening the doors to a new retail location and wellness center, The Wellness Hub at Hempfield Apothecary. The Hub will be a space for education on the uses and benefits of cannabis. Through hands-on learning, patrons will have access to workshops that address mental health issues in the community, restorative yoga practices, art therapy, and more. “[We want] to offer a space people can come to that’s not your typical head

shop. That’s not what we are,” Heather, a registered nurse and card holder herself, said. “We’re open and willing to explain the ins and outs, the science behind it. I want others to understand you can be a functioning human being, a very positive influence in the local community and worldwide, and still be a cannabis user.” The Hempfield team is fueled by the idea that their methods of wellness could improve the quality of life for the people who purchase their products. When they receive a testimonial from someone who has experienced relief, the staff even gather to read it in their morning huddles. “Our team knows what they’re doing here makes a huge impact on others’ lives,” Heather said. “It is the most gratifying [and] fulfilling thing I could ever expect from a business.” 100 WEST WALNUT STREET

In addition to being Hempfield Botanical’s new manufacturing site, Hempfield Apothecary will stock the brand’s health and wellness products including CBD oils, skincare products, and topicals. Hempfield Apothecary will also offer therapeutic and educational opportunities for the Lancaster community, like one-on-one medical marijuana consultations and support groups, and the second floor will be home to a demo kitchen for cannabis cooking classes. “I think the world needs to better understand the benefits of cannabis,” Heather said, and she’s determined to make it happen through this dynamic new space. Fresh Face: Vital Theatre Company STEPHEN SUNDERLIN’S F I R S T B R U S H W I T H T H E AT R E was during a public speaking experience in high school. But it wasn’t the spotlight that hooked him—it was the sweaty palms and shaky knees. “I’ve never been more nervous in my life,” Stephen said. “I never wanted to have that experience again, so I joined a speech class. The speech teacher was also the drama teacher, and she put me in a play.” The rest is history. Founding Producing Artistic Director, Stephen has been part of Vital Theatre since its formation in 1999, when he and three additional theatre professionals came together to create their own company. “Theatre was a vital part of our lives, and we felt that theatre should be

a vital part of other people’s lives,” Stephen said. The team at Vital Theatre knows that a small seed of creativity can grow into a life infused with curiosity, wonder, and delight, and they plant those seeds into shows geared towards children and their families. Performing predominately original shows, Vital Theatre made a name for itself as a family theatre in 2008 after the creation of their hit show Pinkalicious The Musical, which still tours nationally. After 24 years of producing shows in New York City, Stephen wondered if Vital Theatre’s success could be replicated in other locations. When Stephen’s daughter and son-in-law moved to the Lancaster area four years ago, he began visiting and noticed a

rich arts community in the area. He started dreaming of what it could look like for Vital Theatre to perform shows for children and families in Lancaster. In May, Vital Theatre put these dreams into action and welcomed the first Lancaster County audience to its premier show at Mickey’s Black Box in Lititz. “We’ve had a huge impact on our audience, as they come back again and again,” Stephen said. “If one person is inspired, if one person is motivated, if one person is touched by our work, then we feel like what we’ve done is vital.” For a list of Vital Theatre’s upcoming events and shows, visit vitaltheatre.org.

60 years of sweet music I N 1 9 5 7 , Civitas (then known as Sertoma) came together with an idea to bring beautiful music to Lancaster’s Long’s Park through the construction of an amphitheater. With the expertise of Wickersham Construction & Engineering, the amphitheater was built and dedicated in 1962, kicking off a 60-year history of musical arts and culture for the community. Although programming has changed over the years, the summer music series has been a staple piece of Long’s Park since that dedication, eventually settling on Sunday evenings for families to load up their picnic blankets and lawn chairs to experience the variety of music the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation (LPAF) is proud to present.

maintenance of the amphitheater over the years, said, “From my personal perspective, it is very unique for a community of our size to be able to offer entertainment of the caliber that Long’s Park provides to the community free of charge.” Wauls and the Foundation are excited for the future of the amphitheater as the concert series stays true to the mission of providing great music from all genres for the entire community to experience.

The 2022 Summer Music Series starts June 5! Go to longspark.org/concertschedule for the official lineup or follow along on Fig’s social media channels.

Dave Wauls, President of LPAF, reflected on the 60th anniversary and the music series’ impact, saying, “The series give anyone and everyone the opportunity to come to the park and enjoy music, and music they may not have experienced before.” Wauls also celebrates that because of sponsorships and funds raised through the annual Art Festival, the concerts are free for all. W

hether driving a bright orange Volkswagen bus or sponsoring the YWCA Race Against Racism, Peter Barber actively participates in building community. Faithful readers of Fig may know Barber as one of “the Dudes” who owns Two Dudes Painting Company with his business partner, Brian McCaskey. Two Dudes is a Certified B Corporation and an example of innovation and service, as they live up to their mission of being a force for good. Community engagement is part of their brand, getting involved in arts initiatives and always lending a hand in their neighborhood—acting as a COVID-19 clinic, a polling place, and even a spay and neuter location. “No community can exist if you don’t have members contributing back to it,” Peter said. “If everybody’s trying to take from the community, it’s not going to thrive.” Barber has served as the Chair of the Board for the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and on the Board of Lancaster City Alliance for many years. Today Barber serves as a Board Member for SoWe (Lancaster’s Southwest Neighborhood organization) and ASSETS (a nonprofit agency that supports inclusive entrepreneurship).

The Reach High Series is brought to you by High Foundation. Find out more about their mission to be a Bridge to Opportunity for the Lancaster community at highfoundation.org.

The brand of leadership Barber encourages requires humility and patience. He uses running to explain his leadership philosophy: “People think of running as solitary, but it’s a team sport,” he said. “I run with [my club] because they’re way better than me, and they push me in ways that I couldn’t push myself. [Similarly] I have a bunch of business peers, and I learn and grow from them.”

“No community can exist if you don’t have members contributing back to it.” A marathon runner, Barber believes that leadership is about knowing people and what interests, motivates, and inspires them. He recognizes his team’s talents and strengths and empowers them to lead. Barber is proud to be a part of the group of leaders at Two Dudes who are doing creative and impactful work in their community as they model a better way to do business.

Energy TRANSFORMING WASTE INTO A RESOURCE IN LANCASTER COUNTY

tons of the remaining waste each year at its locations. Most of it ends up at one of two LCSWMA waste-to-energy facilities.

How does LCSWMA’s system work?

The trash serves as fuel for the fire which burns between 1,800- and 2,200-degrees Fahrenheit. Water-filled tubes in the boilers are heated and the water is converted to pressurized steam that is forced through a turbine to generate

At the Lancaster Waste-to-Energy Facility in Conoy Township, transfer trailers from the Transfer Station Complex near Lancaster City as well as local collection vehicles deliver waste to the site. Trash What is waste-to-energy? is stacked several stories high in a Waste is proven to be an energy197-foot-long concrete pit that is capable producing resource through a process of holding nearly 9,000 tons of garbage. called waste-to-energy (WTE). This is A large grapple crane pulls from the where non-hazardous municipal solid storage pits and continuously feeds one waste (MSW), or garbage, is burned to produce steam which then spins a turbine of three boilers—a process that runs all day, every day. to generate electricity. First, Lancaster County recycles and separates household hazardous waste— totaling approximately 46.5% of the waste generated in the county. LCSWMA then manages and processes nearly one million

usable electricity. About 20% of the steam is piped to an adjacent business (Perdue AgriBusiness) where it is utilized for soybean processing. The steam replaces the need for fossil fuels. And that’s not the end of the story. The ash from the WTE process still contains ferrous and nonferrous metals like pans, gears, utensils, bicycles, tin cans, and mattress springs. Magnets and eddy currents remove the metals which are then sent to recycling markets. LCSWMA is extracting and recycling approximately 10,000 tons of metal a year from the ash— metal that doesn’t end up in the landfill!

What are the benefits to Lancaster County?

By combusting nearly 1,200 tons of trash a day in Lancaster County, LCSWMA is generating about 36 megawatts of electricity at a given time. The facility itself consumes six of those megawatts and 25 are sold into the local power grid—enough to power more than 20,000 Lancaster County homes and businesses! The remaining steam is sent to Perdue AgriBusiness. Another benefit is land preservation. The waste-to-energy process reduces the waste

volume by 90%. That means only about 10% of the MSW (now in the form of ash) ends up in the landfill. Although landfilling all MSW is cheaper and the most common method across the country, it requires a massive amount of land and produces harmful greenhouse gas (methane).

The pit is capable of holding nearly 9,000 tons of garbage.

LCSWMA’s 96-acre landfill in Manor Township began operating in 1989. Without waste-to-energy, Lancaster County likely would have needed two more landfills of the same size. In fact, the existing Frey Farm Landfill would have reached capacity in 2001. Although the combustion process is not emission-free, emissions from the WTE facility are strictly and consistently monitored by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and publicly reported. LCSWMA has an outstanding history of operating below the DEP’s permitted emissions limits, and the facility operates up to 99% below federal emissions standards.

The waste is combusted by burning at up to 2,200 degrees.

That’s just one way LCSWMA is managing waste as a resource to protect and benefit our community. Learn other ways and take a Virtual Tour of their sites at lcswma.org.

LOOKS UP As Lancaster continues to grow and evolve in exciting ways, city initiatives are popping up around town that are elevating our vibrant community to a healthier, cleaner place.

Architects, designers, business owners, and property managers often have the challenge of creating sustainable buildings with modern amenities and technology while preserving the historic elements that make these places special.

Armstrong World Industries is committed to helping Lancaster City re-envision its historic spaces, and this special feature in each issue of Fig in 2022 is dedicated to showcasing these important building projects. On the following pages, read about Lancaster City projects using Armstrong ceilings to make healthier spaces where we live, work, learn, heal, and play.

After several years of planning and construction starting in 2018, both

schools are now complete and outfitted with about 70,000 sq. ft. of Armstrong ceiling tiles in each facility. By working with AWI, MAROTTA/MAIN was able to specify ceilings with inspirational design features and the acoustical, high light reflectance and sustainable properties to create healthier, more supportive environments for teaching, learning, and student interaction.

Shown at top is a very special design element in the Reynolds cafeteria that comes from an old book with a City of Lancaster map. Collaborating with AWI, MAROTTA/MAIN was able to scan the image of the 1929 historic map, approximately the same age as the school building, so it could be printed on mineral fiber ceiling tile and installed in the cafeteria. Students can even locate their school on the map. The printed Ultima® Create!™ suspended “clouds” with Total Acoustics® and Sustain® were paired with Axiom® trim. With this combination, the ceilings could be installed higher than wall-to-wall ceilings to allow for larger windows that mimic the originals and provide more natural light. Project designed by

Shaken, swirled, and sipped

L A N C A S T E R C I T Y I S LO C AT E D I N T H E H E A RT of beautiful Lancaster County—a national destination for good food, rolling farmland, and family adventures. There’s so much goodness waiting to be discovered around every corner, so grab a few friends and make some memories. Curious what Lancaster has to offer for a summer of craft sipping? We’ve got it right here. In collaboration with Discover Lancaster, we invited Kylie, our Digital Content Intern, and two friends to take a tour of Lancaster wine, beer, and cocktail experiences that are definitely worth a stop this summer.

Waltz Vineyard Estate Winery Tucked on a hillside in Manheim, PA, the Waltz family is preserving a legacy of wine making and sharing their craft with Lancaster County. For our wine stop, Waltz Vineyards was the perfect spot for a sunny day to enjoy the view of the vineyard and Lancaster County farmland. For our tasting, we got a list of 13 wines with information about flavor notes and food pairings. After picking five different wines, served in beakers as a flight at the table, we rated each one as we worked our way from whites to reds and even grabbed a bottle of our favorite on the way out. 1599 Old Line Road, Manheim waltzvineyards.com

What We Loved: • The Sauvignon Blanc 2021—crisp and refreshing, this is the perfect wine for summer! • Waltz offers a selection of local cheeses to enjoy during the tasting. We opted for cheddar and gouda cheeses that paired flawlessly. • W e loved that everything about the experience was local, from the location of the vineyard to the wine we enjoyed to the paired snacks. P .S. Find a seat in the summer on the estate lawn!

Isaac’s Brewhouse Isaac’s Brewhouse in Downtown Lancaster is a great spot to grab dinner on a weeknight or stop in for a drink on the weekend. For our brew tour, we enjoyed three courses paired with Isaac’s very own draft beers: Isaac’s German-style pilsner, Hartman’s Heroes paired with a bowl of cheddar broccoli soup; Isaac’s Belgian-style witbier aged on blueberries paired perfectly with the Sonoma salad; and Isaac’s American amber, the Dutch Ambler Rambler, paired with the Mallard sandwich— piled with roast beef, bacon, cheddar cheese, and mushrooms on a pretzel roll. Each course was intentional and elevated the delicious flavors of both the beer and the food.

What We Loved: • Each beer has a witty name and a story behind it. We got to meet brewmaster Alex, who knows so much about each brew. He has carefully orchestrated the flavors in each beer on tap. • You can’t go wrong with a big bowl of Isaac’s famous pickle salad. Don’t mess with a classic!

Conway Social Club Conway Social Club is located above Annie Bailey’s Irish Public House in Lancaster City. With its speakeasy atmosphere, it is a unique spot to add to your downtown dining rotation. When we arrived at Conway Social Club for our cocktail stop, we knocked on the door before someone let us in and led us upstairs into the quiet and low-lit atmosphere. The space and the beautifully crafted drinks and unique garnishes made us feel like we had been transported into another world. 28 East King Street, Lancaster conwaysocialclub.com

What We Loved: • The drink menu is extensive! Each drink has a creative name and presentation style to match. Our favorite drinks were the Canopy Hammock, the Absinthe and Apricot, and the Midnight Polo. • We enjoyed the cheese plate to start, loaded with delicious local cheese and preserves, and the ribeye with roasted garlic, sautéed onions and mushrooms, and roasted potatoes—YUM!

LO O K I N G AT T H E H I S T O RY of the American Justice system, there are many inequities. United Way of Lancaster County believes that justice includes the removal of systemic barriers for communities that have been negatively impacted through policies like convict leasing, red lining, and inequitable cash bail. Project Blueprint addresses these barriers by preparing underrepresented individuals to sit at the decision-making seats of boards and authorities to ensure policies are created with the most impacted communities in mind, transforming justice towards restorative practices to truly give every community member the opportunity to thrive. United Way of Lancaster County's newly established equity committee begins their work to bring systematic change to the community through Project Blueprint and will continue to spearhead new initiatives to address these gaps in other ways.
