“What most people in our area do not realize is that we are not a “Cool Climate Region” like the Finger Lakes. We receive 3000-3400 Heat Units, which is warmer than many of the coastal growing areas of California like Sonoma Coast.

We benefit from an average of 40 inches of rainfall each year, which keeps the soil moist enough to thrive without continuous irrigation. Our site in particular has Beddington Silt Loam soil, which is comprised of 70% shale so that if the rainfall is too intense for our vinifera grapes, the shale component promotes excellent drainage and pulls water away from our vines.”

Power Packs Project partners with eligible families to provide weekend food and nutritional education so that families are empowered and children thrive. Power Packs started in 2005 in Lancaster with the recognition that many children and their families were having trouble making ends meet through the weekend. Power Packs has grown from one school to twenty-one schools today.

Ingredients, recipes and tips are packed by volunteers for about 620 families per week, 2,200 people in five local school districts.

responsible for pointing me in the right direction. When I was young, I wanted to be a lawyer because I love to argue! Cheese; All cheese—even American cheese has its place. Salt; it may not be PC to say salt, but food that’s not seasoned well is horrible. Over or underdone in a recipe, and it’s catastrophic.

I wish more people paid attention to using salt correctly.”

AUTHENTIC Once a single, homeless mother herself, Jennifer lends an empathetic ear and a tough love heart to women who find their way to her Chestnut Street doorstep.

“I am here to help women as others have helped me,” says Powell, who has served as executive director of Clare House for the past 10 years. “I look at their struggle through my own eyes.”

As a young mother, Powell sought shelter and assistance from a variety of Lancaster’s social services. After returning to school and graduating with a degree in sociology, Powell answered a blind job ad that led her to the steps of Clare House.

“This place is about new beginnings and second chances,” Powell explains. “This was my chance to help someone as others once helped me.”

Since opening its doors in 1980, Clare House has grown to support 20 women and their children at a time. Much like her own life, Powell takes a no-nonsense approach to her residents’ recovery. “We have to help, not do,” says Powell, who says the average stay at Clare House is only four months. “It is important to empower women to be self-sufficient.” Classes in budgeting, wellness and job skills are part of each woman’s path to recovery.

“ This place is about new beginnings and second chances. This is my chance to help someone as others once helped me.”

After a decade with Clare House, Powell still feels challenged, connected and committed to the mission.

“It means a lot to the women here that I did not learn my lessons from a book. I share my personal experiences and plant a seed. Hopefully that seed will blossom.”

Your songs are inspired by the deepest roots of American music—what draws audiences to this sound today?

Maya: “People like to hear good stories in good company. When we show up with acoustic instruments and three human voices, we are creating a sound that is accessible, compelling and relevant.”

How did the people and experiences of your childhood shape your identity as musicians?

OLIVER: “By the time I was ten, I was able to play fiddle in the Craven Family Band with my parents and improvise on bluegrass and country music. Playing with my folks is my earliest stage experience. It’s something I don’t get to do often enough.”

CHARLIE: “When I was four, I heard the song “500 Miles,” and I loved it. My dad got the tape for me and I listened to it like crazy. My dad is a bass player and inspired me to play. And I listened to oldies music a lot with my mother.”

Maya: “I was surrounded by music. My family made an annual pilgrimage to Clifftop, an old-time music festival in West Virginia, and we had a lot of campfires all summer long.”

Vocal harmonies play a major role in your songwriting; what makes the human voice a powerful instrument?

OLIVER: “It is an instrument that we’re lucky to be born with, can play at any time, it’s free and every voice is unique. Charlie Louvin once said, “If a song’s worth singing, you ought to put harmony on it,” and we really believe that.”

You do have a pretty intensive touring schedule —what’s your favorite thing about traveling?

And what draws you back to Lancaster?

CHARLIE: “We love tasting, walking and playing through towns we’ve never been to. Food is one of the best things about traveling. We can buy fresh and local in a new town every day. We are also the grateful recipients of some incredible hospitality along the way. We were all raised in Lancaster, and the one thing that will always draw us back is family.

We also love our friends, Roots and Central Market, Long’s Park and the lightning bugs.”
