Fresh Face: Tread House T R E A D H O U S E is bringing a new kind of workout to Lancaster. As passionate owners, co-owners Shana Atkins and Megan Fessler-McCarthy developed a program combining scientific research, best-in-class equipment, and a ‘feel good’ experience that will leave members coming back for more. Tread House is set to open their doors mid-December and will be located in the historic Penn Square. The Experience. The Coaches. The Community. Shana and Megan have not only designed the perfect space, but they’ve also come up with the perfect workout regime for their members. They preach to ditch the device, get lost in some real music, and allow yourself 60 minutes to connect to your mind, body, and soul. Each workout will consist of a highly effective cardio program on the

nation’s number one treadmill, Woodway Treadmills, strength training that targets specific muscle groups to ensure results and minimize overtraining, and a major focus on injury prevention and recovery. The studio will have a dark, ominous vibe but the energy and music will light up the room. Both women hold a variety of nationally credited certifications. Shana holds her Personal Training Certification through ISSA and Megan holds hers through ACSM. Both women are certified run coaches through the Road Runners Club of America, and also certified coaches through TRX suspension trainer. Shana also holds a certification as a specialist in sports nutrition. And, as a mother of two boys, Megan is very passionate about her AFPA Pre & Post Natal certification.

Owners Nicole Duquette and Matt Chapman invite the curious to find and create with unique pens, water soluble graphite, and the famous Blackwing pencils (favored by the likes of Walt Disney and John Steinbeck). THERE’S A NEW KID IN TOWN, AND HER NAME IS 101 NORTH QUEEN. Bringing new life to a building that had been vacant for almost 10 years, the new four-story mixed-used development by Zamagias Properties made its ribbon cutting debut on November 21, on the eve of the Extraordinary Give. The timing could not have been any more fitting, as the new building and its tenants have led the way in the regeneration of this area which is so central to the community of Lancaster. A mix of office, retail, and residential space totaling 150,000 square feet, the newly rebranded 101NQ is now home to software company Cargas Systems, fitness center I:Train Studio, as well as several street-level retailers, including Free Press, Ville + Rue, Yahi Poke, Casa Carlo, Blossom Med Spa, and Starbucks, with several more in the coming months. LNP Media Group is expected to move in during the first half of 2020. Originally a Hess Department store which opened in 1970 and closed in 1973, the building became known as the Bulova Building, a brown brick windowless monolith in the heart of the City. Vacant since 2008, Pittsburgh based developer Zamagias Properties, who was looking for a new redevelopment project, bought the neglected building at auction in 2016. “We looked at potential cities within a four- to five-hour radius of Pittsburgh, including Ohio, Maryland, and Virginia,” said Zamagias President David Martens. “Far and away, Lancaster stood out as the one.” “Lancaster,” said Martens, “has an energy and vibrancy unlike any other city. It hit all the buttons for us—a historic district, walkability, and an entrepreneurial culture. It is completely unique to the core.” 101NQ is the firm’s third Downtown development project (the others are Steeple View Lofts and the Keppel Building), and it may very well be its most transformative to date. “As an outsider, we saw that with 101NQ, this is where the city is today—a really cool place,” said Martens. “We wanted to make a building to show the people of Lancaster where they’ve come to, and say, ‘wow.’ And we are doing just that.”

You could argue that Wayne’s life path has never been about orthodoxy. His journey to Lancaster, all 7,603 miles of it, is undoubtedly a testament to that. It was “a very long journey,” he says. “I had the benefit of already knowing a host family through the Rotary Club of Lancaster. Having attended both Hempfield and Manheim Township High

Wayne’s experiences in Lancaster helped further his dream of not only becoming a certified personal trainer, but also the concept and eventual creation of I:Train Studios on 315 West James Street.

Wayne cites I:Train’s welcoming atmosphere as one of those positives. “A gym can very often be a place that feels unwelcoming and intimidating,” he says. “We pride ourselves that everyone can feel at home with us.”

“In creating I:Train Studios, my influences came from working at Willow Valley Retirement Community, McMillan Training Systems, and LA Fitness. I realized there was a need for a one-stop shop for health and wellness. Each of the above

While there is no doubt that Wayne’s experience with I:Train Studios has been rewarding, he is keenly aware of the challenges that often accompany success.

“The biggest challenge is competition, staying ahead of them and remaining innovative. The aforementioned have shaped my business in a positive way because there is no chance to remain complacent or underdeliver on results. Because in this business, results matter.” And in staying ahead of that curve, I:Train will soon be opening a second studio space at the new 101NQ building on the corner of Queen and Orange Streets, a convenient location for city residents and professionals looking to enhance their lifestyles. Expanding its footprint even further, I:Train Studios plans to add to its service offering with Corporate Health and Wellness initiatives early in 2020. described as atypical. It begins around 3:30 am, when he wakes up to welcome the day with 100 push-ups, followed by training sessions into the late morning and afternoon hours. But if you think Wayne’s day ends early, think again: “I then work on training programs for various clients, meet with staff about maximizing our client experience, studio or office needs, and upcoming events. Depending on the day, I may go back in to train in the late afternoon and evening to meet with existing or potential new clients.” When asked what he would want I:Train Studios’ lasting legacy to be, Wayne expects it “to be the place that… regardless of where you are in your fitness and health journey, you are always welcome—regardless of race, gender, age, or any personal belief or conviction. Fresh Face: Move It Studio M O V E I T S T U D I O is back in Lancaster with a new location overlooking Central Market. When Marie Cleaves Rothacker opened the first barre studio in the region five years ago, she quickly built a loyal following. “We focus on energizing people’s lives through movement, offering the best parts of the dance world, rather than just a workout,” says Cleaves Rothacker. After expanding to Manheim Township which would become the primary location, Move It is now coming back to the city with the same focus. Members say that just walking into the studio makes them feel refreshed. Both studios are bright and open complete with specialty boutiques. Class sizes are

kept small for personalized attention. The downtown studio features Move It Barre signature classes, Mat Pilates, and dance classes for adults. The Manheim Township studio offers Pilates equipment classes and Move It Barre. As Cleaves Rothacker says, “It all works together to create an experience that not only strengthens bodies, but enlivens minds.” Partnering with local movement experts, Move It Studio is the only area studio to host a Pilates teacher training program. Led by Master Teacher, Deb Nehlig, the curriculum is nationally recognized. All Move It Barre teachers train in-house with Cleaves Rothacker, who developed the discipline based on her professional

ballet training. The studio also works closely with Prana Functional Manual Therapy to offer screenings to members as well as continuing education for teachers. Cleaves Rothacker, who’s had two children since opening the studio, says the most exciting part is seeing clients move through all phases of life. “We find that many clients are in a profession where they are taking care of others, either through family, practicing medicine, or being in education. The time at Move It is just for them.” Whether balancing a busy career, family life, or actively aging, it’s about empowering women to move, while finding their inner dancer. 717.925.9970

In celebration of Earth Day 2019, AWI kicked off its participation in the largest citizen science effort on record, The Great Sunflower Project. At its Columbia Avenue corporate headquarters, the company planted an acre and a half of Lemon Queen sunflowers to help bees, a critical food pollinator that’s been experiencing decline in recent years, thrive here in Lancaster County. The goal is to plant more sunflowers for bees, native milkweed (Asclepsias tuberosa) for the Monarch butterfly, as well as other native plants each year on the campus to help fortify our important pollinators. In this first year, regular bee counts confirmed that an average of about 20,000 bees per day frequented the plot…not to mention the many benefits it provided to birds and other wildlife.

Armstrong World Industries regularly hosts customers in a special building called the Avenue, its “permanent trade show space” on its corporate campus that brings its growing portfolio of ceiling and wall solutions and services to life. What better way to reinforce this space as a habitat for creativity, innovation and infinite possibility than to showcase artwork from local artists? Throughout the building, you’ll see glass, porcelain and pottery pieces from James Gallagher, Phil Kreider, Jean Lehman, Kevin Lehman and Sue Tucker; monotypes by William Kocher; watercolors by Michael Allen and Eva Bender; photography by Nathan Cox; metal sculpture by Bill Dorsey who is also an AWI retiree; mobile sculpture by Ryan Hanusack, another AWI employee; and oils by Lee Lovett, Jackie Madsen, Florence Starr Taylor, a former AWI employee; and AWI retirees Patricia Wertz and Dick Whitson.

K9 TRAINING GROUND Another unique way to leverage AWI’s campus grounds was to offer it up as a training ground for the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit this summer. The facilities were a hit for officers and K9s alike. Lancaster County Deputy Sheriff David Cole said, “One of our biggest challenges is finding good spots to train our dogs. We were so excited when we were able to use the AWI campus. It’s a perfect spot for the exercises we run, and we look forward to being out there again!”

Fresh Face: Woodstream “ P H E N O M E N A L LY C O N V E N I E N T, E XC I T I N G , A N D C O O L .” That’s how Woodstream Corporation CEO Miguel Nistal describes working Downtown. In early September, he and some 180 employees moved from Lititz into the company’s new digs at 29 East King Street. Although a short distance, it’s a major move for Woodstream, which operated out of Lititz for more than a century. With the Victor Mousetrap as its claim to fame, the company once known as The Animal Trapping Company of

America changed its name in the 1960s and has since diversified as a global manufacturer of animal and pest control and lawn & garden products. According to Miguel, who’s been CEO since 2016, the company had outgrown the original headquarters in Lititz, which dates to 1890. “Lititz is a great place to work,” says Miguel, “however we were unable to renovate our original headquarters in a cost effective way.” Now located on King Street, in the heart of Downtown Lancaster, Woodstream occupies three floors of the former home of Garvin’s department store,

in a light-filled interior thanks to the original glass atrium. Woodstream hired local architectural firm Beers + Hoffman for the year-long renovation, which includes open seating areas, quiet rooms, and an outdoor deck, all of which, says Miguel, make the new HQ “a warm, uplifting place to work.” The up-and-coming cool factor of Lancaster was among the deciding factors to relocate, says Miguel. Woodstream’s annual growth rate of three to five percent means there’s an ongoing need to also grow the staff.

“In order to attract new people and maintain our current talent, we’ve got to be in a great location,” he says. “We found this really great building on King Street that had amazing potential. We knew it was the best decision for Woodstream to come here.” Miguel credits the Parking Authority and Mayor Danene Sorace for securing 180 parking spaces, allaying employee concerns about their new commute. It took little time for Woodstream staff to see just how much Lancaster has to offer within walking distance. “They’re going out to lunch, hanging out at Central Market, getting to know everybody. After work, they’re meeting for dinner, and so are our vendors and customers, who stay at the Marriott (Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square), just across the street.” Woodstream is keeping its factory in Lititz, which employs 165 workers. (There is an additional factory in Knoxville, Tenn.) Miguel says they have potential plans for repurposing the old HQ into warehouse storage.

Meanwhile, Miguel and his team have hit the ground running with their community outreach. Says Erika Herold, who heads up Woodstream’s Community Outreach & Sponsorships, “Woodstream Corporation is committed to helping our community and the organizations within it. We are deep-rooted in our community and dedicated to continue to be more involved.” Woodstream is a Title Sponsor of the YWCA of Lancaster Race Against Racism. 2019 was their first year as the Title Sponsor of the race and they are continuing to move forward as a sponsor of the Extraordinary Give. “We could not be more proud to be a part of the Extraordinary Give celebration that brings together an entire community and supports the organizations that serve as the foundation for that community.” Simply put, Woodstream is happy to be here.

the student-founded Middle School Green Committee. “The mission of Green Committee is to inspire and initiate change,” Rebecca said. “This is my future,” she continued. “Kids today are going to have to confront a lot of challenges in the future and spreading awareness now as kids will help prepare our generation for finding answers later as adults.” Said Elizabeth, “Green Committee is one step toward making our school community more sustainable and having a positive impact on our planet.”

To that end, the committee has created new recycling programs at school, as well as expanding existing ones. To name just a few examples, the students have introduced plastic bag recycling, made it easier to recycle batteries, and installed new bins that allow students, faculty, and staff to direct almost all of their waste paper toward becoming new products, instead of new landfill. “By inspiring others in our school and community, we are making a difference,” said Rebecca.

Landmarks PRESIDENT JAMES BUCHANAN’S W H E AT L A N D —T H E G I F T T H AT K E E P S ON GIVING! Truer words could never be spoken thanks to the generosity and foresight of the Junior League of Lancaster and other philanthropic- and heritage-minded Lancaster County citizens in 1936. Wheatland is a wonderful example of how preserving and celebrating our community’s past through its architecture is only possible when creative minds come together with a shared purpose. By 1934, 66 years after the death of President Buchanan, Wheatland and the surrounding grounds had fallen into disrepair and were at risk of being lost to history. The “James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland” was formed a year later by the Junior League of Lancaster and the group successfully raised $40,000 for Wheatland’s purchase in 1936! Constructed in 1828, Wheatland is a fine example of Federal-style design featuring the distinctive two-tone shutters, round top dormers, and a large lunette transom over the main entrance. The interior layout accurately reflects the personality of the bachelor president, with equal attention given to both his library and his parlors. Buchanan loved to entertain and did so in high style. The interior is dressed in fashionable Victorian-era details, furnishings, and textiles, providing the perfect backdrop for seasonal decorations as displayed during this Yuletide season. She has a disarming charisma about her. I asked about her life as I began photographing her, but she was more interested in the initiatives of the Lancaster LGBTQ+ Coalition than in herself. She’s got that underdog spirit; someone that you want in your corner. A Chicago native, Karen moved to Lancaster a decade ago and immediately got to work. “You can’t be from Chicago and not grind all the time,’’ she said as she merely laughed, describing the frenzied nature of her day-today. In college, it was “hard to find a program that will focus on both psychology and the body so I kind of was able to go to a school in Chicago that let me self-lead. I created my own course; the subjects I took, the classes I took, the books I read.” Karen isn’t only a pioneering advocate for the LGBTQ+ community; she’s also a therapist, trained yoga instructor and does massage and healing work with trauma in the body.

“I’m just dedicated to creating safe, dignified spaces for connection in the LGBTQ+ community and advancing equity so that people can freely love who they love.” Karen’s love and empathy for marginalized people to know that they have room in this world quickly made itself apparent to me. It showed itself not only in her passion and the many testimonials she shared, but in the strategic power of the Lancaster LGBTQ+ Coalition’s efforts, who are training and working with local hospitals, public schools and youth, retirement communities, and crisis shelters. “If you had told me 10 years ago that I would have a whole business built on my biscotti, I would not have believed you. But I love it! I’m where I need to be to give to others.” A S K A N I TA H O W she got from stay-at-

home mom baking pastries to a bakery, a café, and wholesale accounts, and she shrugs with a twinkle in her brown eyes: “the doors just kept opening in front of me!” She says her favorite job is parenting, but as her children began to launch, she got a “bit bored” and said yes to making biscotti for a nearby bakery. Soon she was considering an empty café space on Walnut Street. Gifts and support confirmed that it was meant to be. Anita feels she is meant to be helping her customers and creating jobs for her employees—gifts to the city around her. Anita is passionate about the hands-on side of her business: getting her hands in dough, serving customers, giving away biscotti, and chuckling at the Anitas who seek out her biscotti at trade shows because their name is Anita, too. Anita relies on insights from her SCORE mentor Larry to help smooth out business financial tangles and wonders what door will open next. Regardless, Anita’s daily motto that guides her business and decisions is “What can I do for someone today?”

Off The Streets Lancaster is an all-volunteer organization that assists persons experiencing homelessness but have the ability to pay rent to move out of shelters, off the streets, and into permanent housing. Existing social service resources provide the referrals. Off the Streets pays a security deposit directly to the landlord and delivers furniture and household items to transform an empty apartment into a home. They have helped over 2,400 people move into permanent homes in the last 6 yearsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;80% of these are women and children. Social mission: SWAN At Fig, we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. Because of this, the Social Mission Partner program began. Each year, Fig partners with a non-profit organization working to transform the community. “ M U S I C C A N C H A N G E your mood and help you think about things,” shared Anny about her SWAN music classes. “If you are sad, music can brighten your day.” On any given day in Lancaster, it is estimated that 4,600 children have a parent in prison. The trauma associated with that experience has an impact on them physically, emotionally, behaviorally, and scholastically. SWAN is using music to empower children to rise above their present circumstances. Willow, an astonishingly precocious 6-year-old, observed that music takes her to a “magical place” where she can have fun with friends and meet new ones.

Having been in SWAN for a year now, she said, “I love to perform because it makes me feel confident. It gives me courage. After I perform, I feel happy and have a wonderful memory.” Willow has even developed her own way to conquer preperformance jitters. She said, “I close my eyes and then I sing.” Majae said, “People love our voices and want to hear us sing.” Tyrell said “Music helps me study. I work to play the drum beats and keep them together with everybody.” These four children have learned that through music they can brighten their mood, process their feelings, be transported to a magical place, have

“I’m a third generation figure skater. My grandfather started the tradition, followed by my mother. I caught the figure skating bug after watching the 1992 Olympics where Surya Bonaly performed her now signature backflip. Seeing the sparkle of the skater’s dresses, Bonaly’s gymnastics tricks, and hearing the music flow along with the skaters was all I needed to fall head over heels in love with figure skating. I was going to have the best job in the entire world—Mrs. Potts in Disney on Ice. Then one day, while practicing a catch foot spiral during a public ice session, I caught my toe pick in a divet on the ice made by another skater, hyperextending my hip. I should have stopped competing and jumping as much as I did but, I was seventeen and stubborn. I continued to compete and put an incredible amount of undue stress on my hips during hours of practicing jumps. Pain became a constant part of my life. An old coworker had seen my Facebook posts chronicling my journey and reached out to me about Evolution Power Yoga. One of the themes of Baptiste Yoga (the style practiced at Evolution) is to “Be a Yes.” I am forever grateful that, despite my initial apprehension, I began practicing in 2016. I set my goal of taking 100 yoga classes that year and to participate in the 40 Days to Personal Revolution program. Three years later I enrolled in their ACCESS Teacher Training program which has given me the opportunity to change the story I have written for myself. I will never forget the very first time that I walked out of a yoga class without any pain at all in my hips. I refuse to let my body fall out of alignment again and I know that takes work. That work means that I show up even when I’m tired. I show up even when I am not feeling the strongest. I will show up because in this practice, even though I’m standing still on my mat in 90+ degrees, I get the same feeling I do when I am in an ice rink flying across the ice.” Visit figlancaster.com to read Victoria’s full story.

Kathy Phillips, CEO and Founder of Primitives by Kathy (PBK), is no stranger to offering creative solutions to her wholesale customers. It seems like a natural ‘next step’ for me to pursue a degree in nursing and I hope to specialize in pediatrics. My experience with children is rooted in the pool, from teaching swim lessons to being an assistant coach this past summer for my summer swim team and currently working with the younger swimmers from my club swim team. My intention is to be a positive individual in the nursing field and have strong communication skills, care for the patient, and have compassion towards everyone involved, in order to be an exceptional nurse and brighten a sick child’s day.”

A G I V I N G C O M M U N I T Y. As Janie Martin was folding laundry at the CURE Kenya Hospital in Kijabe, Kenya in October 2018, she was inspired to replace the threadbare hospital gowns.

colored pajamas. In September the pajamas were lovingly folded and placed in suitcases, which were hand-carried to Kijabe by members of the Garden Spot Village Travel with Purpose team.

When she returned home, she shared her vision with others at Garden Spot Village. Before she knew it, the Mountain View Vision & Design Team had taken on the challenge of helping her to sew 96 sets of pajamas for children in Kenya.

When the suitcases were opened in the CURE Kenya Hospital in early October, the pajamas were welcomed with smiles, laughter, and delight.

Residents and staff spent countless hours shopping for fabric and then cutting, sewing, and ironing brightly
