I T ’ S B E E N M A N Y Y E A R S since I moved back to Lancaster from NYC. Back then, the City of Lancaster was just starting to stir. Creativity was taking root and big thinkers like Denny Cox and Mayor Gray were realizing the potential for Lancaster to be a home for artists and a regional tourist destination. 14 years ago, they called it a renaissance, but it was only just the beginning—a spark of light. Artists started the movement and other creatives followed—designers, makers, architects, technology companies, and culinary innovators found the City of Lancaster to be a place where they could make their mark. These creatives set up shop and made things happen. We’re featuring many of them in this issue so you can see inside the creative spaces where the magic happens. With the Fulton Theatre in the midst of an unprecedented expansion and creative entrepreneurs flocking here to start businesses, the City of Lancaster is now in the thick of its creative renaissance. And even more exciting, many of these businesses have found a way to use creativity as a force for good. Here at

Ann B. Barshinger is a Lancaster treasure. As a native of York County whose husband Dick had strong ties to Franklin and Marshall College, she has embraced Lancaster as her home and is unwavering in her support. Ann always says that ANN B. BARSHINGER
Lancaster has made her feel at home. In an effort to make the Fulton’s incoming guest artists feel “at home,” she has graciously supported the housing component of the expansion.
Introducing the Ann B. Barshinger Artists’ Village Taking up the entire 100 block of West King Street, the Artists’ Village boasts 16 apartments for guest artists and a complete renovation of the King Street building facades in an effort to preserve original architectural features of the historic properties. The Fulton employs more than 160 local and regional artists throughout each season and we are very proud to offer our actors and designers premier accommodations through Ann’s generosity.

As a philanthropist and generous supporter of the Arts, Carol Rae Culliton supports in excess of 75 local non-profit organizations through her foundation, the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation, and supports an additional 250 nonprofits on a national scale. Communities and states served include Chicago, Lee County Florida, California, North Carolina, and Haiti. Carol Rae’s boundless generosity seeks to improve the lives and conditions in communities across our nation and right here at home. The Fulton is thankful for Carol Rae’s passion to support the community’s cultural vitality.
Introducing Culliton Tower The prominent glass tower joins the current lobby with the Fulton’s Academy building to create a city block expanse on Prince Street. The tower will replace the driveway between the existing theatre and the education building in an effort to create expanded gathering spaces for Fulton patrons and our community.
Gale Zorian and Jim Hagelgans are well known for their ardent support of the Arts in Lancaster County. Gale and Jim recognize the critical need for an expanded lobby space

Introducing the Rodgers & Associates Lounge Well known in Lancaster as community advocates, Rodgers & Associates, led by Rick and Jessica Rodgers, recognize the importance of the Fulton’s Breakout Performance to Lancaster. They view the Fulton as a place to gather as a community to support the Arts. Their pledge will support the Producers Circle Lounge, a gathering space for Fulton supporters that boasts a private bar and restroom.

Introducing Tell Studio Theatre Patrick Tell, a longtime Fulton Trustee, is passionate about music and theatre. The Fulton Theatre’s fourth floor, originally a shooting gallery, now boasts a 99 seat “black box” theatre. This space currently hosts the Ellen Arnold Groff Series which begins its

fifth season this September. This flexible theatrical space showcases musicals and plays that are specifically programmed to start conversations, to inspire thought, and to engage our audiences in a more intimate setting. Patrick Tell, with his love of music, theatre, and art, chooses to invest in this space and all of its potential. With this expansion the Tell Studio Theatre will have an increased lobby space and an additional elevator. His gift ensures patrons will enjoy this wonderful space for years to come.

Anne and Gene Gardner and their family have a long history of supporting the Fulton Theatre, both as an historic landmark and as a venue for house-produced, innovative musical and dramatic theater. Anne continues this commitment to the growth of the organization and the need for the expansion. Introducing Castagna Hall Castagna Hall is a multipurpose event space, and performance and rehearsal studio that will be located on Water Street. The Hall will allow Fulton artists to rehearse onsite with ample room to rehearse full productions of upcoming shows. In addition, Castagna Hall can be transformed into an enchanting new gathering and event space for 200 people. The Fulton hopes that this area, when not in use as a rehearsal space, will be available for theatre patrons, local nonprofits, and the community.

Introducing the Paul W. and Judy S. Ware Endowment Fund Leaving legacies for the next generation has been a driving force in Paul and Judy Ware’s community support. The Fulton’s Breakout Performance is no exception. With the inaugural gift to this campaign, Paul and Judy and the Ferree Foundation made a decision to focus their support on the Fulton’s Endowment that will provide a continuous source of revenue ensuring the Fulton can continue to inspire audiences for years and generations to come. This is the goal of Paul and Judy and the Fulton’s Executive Leadership; the Endowment allows that to happen.

Twenty-three years ago the grandeur of the Fulton Theatre was restored. During that time, our productions have expanded in size and scope as audiences have grown exponentially to today’s staggering annual 170,000 guests. This amazing growth has tested the limits of the theatre’s infrastructure. It is time, once again, to invest in the “Grand Old Lady of Prince Street.” The Fulton Theatre is poised for a breakout performance; as it Evolves, it will Elevate and Inspire our audiences, artists, and community. This dream began by creating more functional rehearsal space and backstage areas, and installing mechanical systems necessary for modern Broadway quality productions. Where the dream has soared and grown is creating audience amenities and gathering spaces for you, our community. By acquiring and renovating several buildings surrounding the Fulton Theatre, we hope the restored streetscape will enhance Downtown Lancaster as we collaborate with the business and arts communities to grow our collective economic impact. Award winning architect Richard Levengood of RLA Associates has been an instrumental part of the Fulton’s history as a generous

Richard conceived of the plan to create a city block campus and spearheaded the concept design renovation of King Street as well as the incredible architectural features of the Tower Lobby and the Hall on Water Street. Laura Sisay, Green Circle Organics Laura Sisay has always had an affinity for the natural world. Growing up in a small town, she roamed outside and helped pick and preserve black raspberries and vegetables from the patch in the backyard. Since she was a teenager, she had “a strong environmental view of the world and wanted to do a small part to contribute to health and sustainability.” Laura worked on a biodynamic farm just out of college and fell in love with

organic practices as healthier for the earth and more welcoming to smallscale farms and living wages. In 2003, she seized the chance to open an organic produce stand at Central Market. Landmarks L A N C A S T E R T R U S T C O M PA N Y B U I L D I N G On October 15, 1943, Winston Churchill delivered the thought-provoking phrase “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us”. When faced with a decision to replicate the destroyed Commons Chamber to its exact form prior to the Blitzkrieg or test a collegial design, he opted to retain the original floor plan because it encouraged creative tension among members of Parliament. To shape us does not always refer to the physical impact a space can have on us but it can also refer to how it impacts our emotions. A grand and inspired space has the power to influence our behavior, attitude, and creativity. In keeping with this issue’s celebration of creative culture, we have chosen the main banking room of the Lancaster Trust Company designed by C. Emlen Urban and New York City architects York & Sawyer in 1912. Modeled after the 1906 Pennsylvania Railroad Station in New York City, the Lancaster Trust Company Building offers the same monumental barrel vault with distinctive brightly painted octagonal coffers and the overall grandeur as its next of kin. Reaching nearly 40 feet to the apex, the large volume of space is detailed with Beaux Arts design elements including large lunette windows, decorative grill work, fluted Corinthian pilasters, festoons, and cut limestone block walls. Today, the Trust Performing Arts Center is a creative space worth celebrating! RLPS Architects believes in the appreciation and honoring of architecturally significant buildings in the City. Founded in 1954, RLPS provides master planning, architectural, and interior design services for businesses in Lancaster and across the country.

the city. So, CityFolk was followed by a half-dozen art galleries in other buildings they restored in the block they labeled Gallery Row. “We defined the geography of the arts in Lancaster by making the arts district a place,” Denny explains. Other artists moved nearby.
In 2003, Downtown Lancaster continued to struggle, so the two scaled up their creative project skills and bought an old bookstore building on a sketchy block of Prince Street in which Gaye created CityFolk, a lifestyle store that would showcase traditional American folk art, French & American antiques, and decorative accessories.
Gaye and the other gallery owners and artists were able to turn that place into an event, by promoting First Friday. And now they could push the influence of First Friday to restaurants and other venues by attracting people to the city at night.
Gaye, a lifelong retailer, had developed the Museum Store at the Heritage Center adjacent Lancaster Central Market. She understood the power of art and “the Arts” in the retail life of
“We were physically demonstrating that it was not dangerous to walk downtown,” says Denny, who had also chaired the Lancaster Crime Commission. “And it transformed our part of the city, and offered a model for other parts of the city.”
Denny cites the importance of ordinary people as stakesholders for Lancaster’s success, not waiting for government to lead the way. The bi-partisan Crime Commission alone recruited 350 volunteers who wanted to re-make our city. Many, many more have stepped forward since. From Gaye and Denny’s vision Lancaster’s arts scene exploded; Gaye is quick to point out just how unique Lancaster is now with its concentration of hiqh quality art, music, food, and architecture. The two are still in love with transformation. He just completed renovating a city carriage house and she is getting back to her artist roots by putting paintbrush to canvas. Together they still stroll Gallery Row and enjoy the arts renaissance they nurtured.

CEO, Artistic Director ASPIRING TO BE a Broadway sensation, I decided to move to New York in 1997 with $25 in my pocket and a one way bus ticket. I trained, performed, and taught for 11 years until my return home to Lancaster in 2008. I didn’t want my stay in Lancaster to be in vain, as I had learned so much by living in the big city. I wanted to share my gifts with my community and children who have passion for the arts. So I opened up a performing arts studio for kids, where they wouldn’t have to spend thousands of dollars to go away. Not all parents can afford to financially support their child’s dreams and I felt there was an important part of our community that was missing: a performing arts program that fosters growth, discipline, and leadership —particularly one affordable for those who live in our inner city. The team at RebelChique Dance Co. and I are trying to reach these kids while they’re young and teach them some values—the same values I was taught when I was growing up. There is a fine line between life and death, good choices and bad decisions. It’s our duty to intervene and connect with the children of our community to keep them from going down the wrong path. Growing up, I was taught old school values and it is important for me to pass those same values to our children. The object: to create the best possible rye whiskey and honor Lancaster’s whiskey making tradition. Prior to prohibition, everyone in the
U.S. drank rye whiskey and most of it was made right here in Pennsylvania. Of course, that changed after prohibition when bourbon whiskey became popular, and production moved to Kentucky, where corn was more abundant. “The idea of creating a distillery to honor that history and to take us back to our roots in creating excellent rye whiskey here in PA really caught my imagination,” says Andrew. “I loved the idea that you can pick these ingredients from a farm right down the street, then distill the grain and end up with this delicious, smooth whiskey. It’s a little like magic.” When Andrew found an old tobacco warehouse on West Grant Street that was on the national register of historic
places, his imagination got to work. That location became Thistle Finch Distillery, where all of his whiskey is produced, and then served in the tasting room and bar. Tours of the operation and building are available every weekend.

How have you been able to fit in art appreciation in Lancaster during this busy time of the merger at the bank? It’s hard to not experience the arts here in Lancaster. Visual arts abound on every street, from the murals to the galleries and museums we love to visit on First Fridays and on the weekends we have off together. My mother is an artist by trade and manages an art gallery in my hometown in West Virginia, so visiting Gallery Row reminds me of home and helps ground me back to my roots.

Have you been able to experience the theater scene in Lancaster? Yes! BB&T has been very involved in sponsoring productions and events at Fulton Theatre. This is middle school like you’ve never seen it! At three Lancaster Mennonite campuses, students solve real-world problems through STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) experiences. They engage their creative abilities in project-based learning, encouraging them to propel their ideas into reality. In elementary school, students use play-based design-thinking in MakerSpace class weekly to upcycle materials into structures that can withstand the huffing and puffing of the big bad wolf. High school students explore opportunities in fine arts and agtech classes to paint murals, weld shelves, grow gardens, and even design lighting and sound for stage performances.
Social mission: SWAN At Fig, we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. Because of this, the Social Mission Partner Program began. Each year Fig partners with a nonprofit organization working to transform the community. This year we are partnering with SWAN: Scaling Walls A Note At A Time. SWAN is creating pathways to success for children of the incarcerated by mentoring them through the disciplines of music lessons and performance. Visit SWAN4kids.org.
MUSIC & MENTORING: HEALING THE HURT When SWAN’s summer students took to the stage to perform for the community on July 30 there was a backstory for every child that magnified the importance of that performance. Because SWAN works with children affected by parental incarceration, many of their students come into class with an invisible backpack filled with the pain that trauma creates. Sadly, that can wreak havoc on their ability to focus, to learn, and to socialize well. SWAN’s founder, Diana Vuolo, explained to Fig how important it is that their music teachers are also caring and wise mentors. “They are are quick to

encourage the students by telling them that they are valued and that each is needed to create an ensemble.” Fig: How do the students respond to that kind of loving and caring intervention? Diana: One child who repeatedly came in feeling out of sorts eventually took the drum teacher’s hand after class and said, ‘I want to stay in your class all day.’ Another child who had to be removed from class found on the other side of the door that a teacher was there, willing to listen. He has since become a leader in his class. All of this and more is happening while we are coaching the students into a musical ensemble. The harmony we begin to hear is sweet and inspiring in every way.
Fig: What did the children gain from their summer training and performance? Diana: With the help of skilled musicians and caring mentors our children learned an entire program of choreographed songs in addition to learning how to play drums and ukuleles in a group setting. It was a feat that took focus, teamwork, confidence, and discipline. On any given day in Lancaster, it is estimated that 4,600 children have a parent behind bars. SWAN will be serving 200 children this coming school year but so many more could benefit from this music and mentoring mission. Atomic Fittingly situated in front of a space-themed mural, Tom McPhillips, the founder behind Atomic, and his children, Daniel McPhillips and Chloe Rich, are no strangers to creative exploration. “We celebrate the unknown,” says Tom, perhaps in reference to the gargantuan astronauts and rocket ships looming in the background. “It’s a fast-moving industry. While Daniel quips that his father “will never retire,” there is a transition plan in place. Daniel will run business operations in his current position as President. And Chloe, as the company’s Vice President of Brand Strategy and its newest partner, will oversee the company’s marketing as her role evolves into other areas. Tom will resume his focus on designing shows. At present, Daniel and Chloe remain confident that the company will continue to thrive well into the future, not only due to its immensely talented staff, but also because of its strong teamwork dynamic and progressive work culture.
