A NOTE FROM FIG

Experience Columbia’s creativity Have you ever heard someone say that there isn’t much to do in Columbia? I have, unfortunately, and I can’t say that I agree. Maybe it’s because I grew up in a small town that had one stoplight, but I think that there’s a neverending supply of experiences to enjoy in our city! Did you know? In downtown Columbia we have more t two dozen murals (thank you, One Columbia!) and a multitude of art galleries, theatres, and live music venues. That’s in addition to the boutique movie theatre on Main Street, a University that has incredible Art, Drama, and Music Programs, and an award-winning Museum of Art. You can find all of this within a five mile radius downtown! I’ve had the honor to sit around tables and hear how people are making new and exciting things happen in the arts community and wow, what a time to live in Columbia! We have the opportunity to participate, support, learn, watch, teach, experience, listen, and feel—all right here in our community. What if you made the decision to take just one day every month and plan a date or family day out to experience Columbia’s arts scene? You could experience a play at Town Theatre or at Trustus Theatre, a concert at the Philharmonic, view incredible exhibits at the Columbia Museum of Art, take a pottery or glassblowing class, or simply walk through downtown and enjoy all of the murals and sculptures. There is an astonishing amount of amazingly talented artists here for you to enjoy. In this issue, we’re excited to introduce to you the faces and the places that participate in making Columbia a beautiful place to visit, to live, and to experience. As we continue to watch and see Columbia develop into a home for the arts, let us always keep in mind that ‘Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.’ —Pablo Picasso B RY N L E Y FA R R F I G C O LU M B I A D I R E C T O R

Innovating for the future Continuing to be at the forefront of academic excellence and success in the Midlands, Hammond School has built a new Innovation Center on their campus. The Innovation Center provides new science and laboratory spaces, a SciDome, an aquarium, state of the art classrooms, living wall, living terrace, greenhouse, and a student center called “The Nest” where students can gather, study, and share.

Robert Goings

A winning history If there’s one thing that The Goings Law Firm loves to embrace, it’s local South Carolina history. The Moultrie Flag, commissioned in 1775 by Colonel William Moultrie in preparation for war with Great Britain, adorns the wall of their conference room. It’s one of many historical flags that you can find inside their pre-Civil War home that’s been renovated to house their office.

“Marigold Modern is a place for people to come and shop because they know that they’re going to get something special and unique for their child.”

Fresh Face: Marigold Modern Born of a desire to bring things to Columbia that weren’t here previously, owner Louisa Vann opened up Marigold Modern on Devine Street. It’s a unique children’s boutique store that celebrates and represents sustainable craftsmanship and quality from around the world and is the store that Columbia never knew they needed until it was here.

I A M A N ACTOR. I A M A VOLUNTEER. I AM A LE A DER.

I AM A CARDINAL.

Redefining Excellence In the Classroom - On the Field - In the Community - For Their Futures Visit us, tour our 50-acre state-of-the-art campus and see how we nurture our artists, athletes and scholars.

Open House • Sunday, November 4 • Noon-4:30pm

2945 Alpine Road Columbia, SC 29223 803-782-2814 16

Cardinal Newman School

“I never thought that I would go into retail—I worked in research at the university,” Louisa said. “But when I had my daughter, Winslow, I knew that I needed a shift for what was best for my family. My best friend pointed out to me that we were doing all of our baby shopping online and we were buying things and having them shipped in from all over the country. Why not open a shop in Columbia that offered the unique pieces we were looking for? The idea grew from there.” The store carries children’s clothing

lines ranging from Rylee & Cru to Petite Lucette and Freshly Picked and only offers a few sizes in each style to help keep the pieces more “one-of-a-kind.” Marigold Modern offers newborn clothing, nursery decor, children’s books, and more in the shop, but more importantly, it offers a sense of community for those who shop there. “Opening Marigold Modern has been so rewarding,” Louisa said. “It’s empowering to think about mothers, fathers, grandparents, and all of the people who love children coming into our store to shop for beautiful things. It’s the sense of community that comes from it. People come in here to shop and we end up talking, sharing photos of our children, giving and receiving advice, and it’s just a celebration of motherhood.” Louisa was thoughtful with how she planned out the store. From the offstreet parking to the ample space

inside the store for easily maneuvering strollers and children, it’s a wonderful place for both adults and children to be. “We want people to come in with their children, their strollers, their carriers, and be comfortable,” Louisa said. “There’s a couch for new mothers to sit on if they need to nurse their child and we have juice boxes and snacks available for the older kids, too. We wanted to make it as easy as possible to shop here.” To learn more about Marigold Modern, visit their website at marigoldmodern.com and their instagram @marigoldmodern.

Today, it’s for anyone who’s experienced a life disrupting event where words just aren’t enough to express one’s self. “The creative process helps you understand what’s going on inside,” Heidi said. “It gives you a concrete something to explain what you’re feeling.”

Wrapping the town with your brand

Guys & Dolls Production Photo, 1968

Current Town Theatre structure, built after the original house was shut down

Owners Dawn Cotner and Tiffany Herring, a dynamic duo with more than 19 years of combined signage knowledge, have been wrapping the town in design and color since they opened the doors to Swatch Graphics in January 2018. They bring your brand and message to life through vehicle wraps, wall murals, window graphics, banners, signage, and more—no project is too large or too difficult for them to handle!

In 1919, a group of families founded Town Theatre to be a place where they could come with their families to not only watch plays, but also to perform in them and learn from the experience. 100 seasons later, Town Theatre is still run on the same commitment to present plays and musicals that appeal to everyone.

Cheer(s)ing on football this fall

No matter which team you’re cheering for this football season, Craft and Draft has your tailgate needs covered. Enjoy a local craft beer from one of their rotating taps while watching the game at the bar or while you’re shopping their beer and wine selections in the store as you prepare for the weekend tailgate.

Our Connected Communities grants funded $365,176 in arts and culture projects, including Columbia Children’s Theatre’s Flatbed Truck Theatre Series, Palmetto Luna Arts’ Latino Arts in Motion, and Historic Columbia’s Hampton-Preston Garden Rehabilitation.

AT FIG, WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF A COMMUNITY THAT WORKS TOGETHER TO IDENTIFY NEEDS AND FIND SOLUTIONS—one that creates connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. For our 2018 Social Mission Partner, we’ve chosen Palmetto Animal Assisted Life Services (PAALS), an impactful nonprofit whose good works contribute immensely to our thriving, local community. PAALS is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that is committed to enriching and empowering children and adults with physical disabilities and social needs by training service animals and providing animal assisted educational and recreational activities.

The success of the PAALS program is due in large part to the family of volunteers that help raise and train each PAALS puppy, assist with fundraising and events, and more. These volunteers, no matter how many hours, days, or weekends that they have available to volunteer, make a huge impact in each puppy’s life. One way to volunteer at PAALS is to become a Weekend Foster for one of the puppies. The Weekend Foster volunteer is incredibly important to the PAALS program—these volunteers help establish the foundation of training and socialization that’s critical to a service dog’s future success. Each Friday afternoon, Weekend Foster volunteers pick up a puppy or dog for the weekend where they will provide a safe and

loving home, teach and enforce basic obedience, and encourage proper house manners. It’s the ideal situation for someone who’s work week might be too busy to take on the responsibility of a full-time dog, but who absolutely loves to be around them! These volunteers are extra special at PAALS—loving on a sweet, adorable puppy is a very easy thing to do but they know how difficult it can be to have to say goodbye after spending several months or a year with one. The biggest part of this volunteer position is that at the end of the day, you were dedicated to helping someone who needs that dog for safety, confidence, and independence. The real reward comes when you see how special the dog is to the person they are placed with!

“ I ’ M D O I N G TH I N G S I ’ V E N E V E R D O N E B E FO R E .” Lloyd Ziegler embraces every new opportunity that comes his way at Garden Spot Village–from learning Scottish dancing to honing his woodworking skills to participating in travel with purpose trips to help rebuild homes devastated by Hurricane Matthew in North Carolina. Shortly after moving to Garden Spot, Lloyd joined the woodshop even though he didn’t have experience or woodworking skills. Master craftsman Bill George was the first of many craftsmen who have taught Lloyd the fine points of woodworking. He uses the woodworking skills he’s learned to help others whenever he can. For example, he recently crafted 100 “broken” wood hearts. This fall a team from Garden Spot Village will tie them together with leather cord and share “mended hearts” with patients at CURE International’s Kenya hospital in Kijabe.

Living a purposeful life in a thriving community is at the heart of Garden Spot Village—because creating a meaningful future never ends. We would love to hear your story, introduce you to some residents and give you the opportunity to learn a little more about the Garden Spot story.
