Fresh Face: Georgia’s Flower Truck T H E L E H I G H VA L L E Y has its share of food trucks—but did you know we have our very own flower truck?

Georgia’s Flower Truck first bloomed in 2019, a year after owner Kait Harrison was inspired by a similar business.

“That’s it,” the Bethlehem native thought. “That’s for me!” She’d grown up loving nature, gardening alongside her mother, and this was a natural next adventure for the budding entrepreneur.

You’ll find the vintage green Volkswagen truck—originally from California, and most recently brought up from Georgia—at the Nazareth Farmer’s Market, the open truck sides flush with zinnias and sunflowers, for creating your own bouquets or

choosing a single stem for a friend—or yourself! You can even book the truck for a private event, a wedding or a shower, or a unique company outing.

“That,” says Kait, “is the beauty of having a business on wheels.” Georgia’s Flower Truck will also provide flowers for special events, and deliver their fresh bespoke creations across the Valley.

Now in her second year of business, Kait remains committed to providing a thoughtful human connection, always driven by her core values: minimalism, sustainability, and loving and supporting local. As often as possible, she sources her flowers from local gardeners and greenhouses (sometimes the zinnias are from

her mother’s garden), hoping one day to grow on her own land. She’s grateful for the support, enthusiasm, and kindness she’s received from her customers and community—and the opportunities she’s had to get to know them, and to bring a little nourishing beauty into their day.

“Flowers certainly aren’t a need, but it means so much to people. Whether it’s adding a splash of color on a kitchen table, or a thoughtful stem for a friend, it’s one of life’s simplest joys,” she says. “Life doesn’t have to be complicated. I remember that every time I’m with my flowers.”

Certified, positive training for your best friend KA I L LY M U T H A R D is on her clients’ side—humans and canines alike. The owner and head trainer of Educanine is passionate about force-free clickerbased training, emphasizing positive reinforcement to reward and encourage rather than punish behavior. Clicker training is “not fear-based,” she says. “It’s about setting a dog up for success and rewarding that success.”

Educanine offers in-home, one-on-one training with dogs and their humans, as well as day camp sessions for focused training with a pup while their humans are at work. Kailly, formerly a social worker, offers graduated and customizable programs for puppies and adult dogs (“kindergarten, high school, and college”), as well as dogs with more complicated behavioral issues.

Pennsylvania doesn’t regulate animal training, which can make it difficult to know if you’re working with a trainer who’s serious and knowledgeable about the field. Kailly is certified by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers and completed both a three-year training apprenticeship and a professional program at the Karen Pryor Academy for Animal Training and Behavior in Waltham, MA. She wants her clients to connect with their dogs, for both parties to be excited, and to experience the thrill of those ‘ah-ha!’ moments of human-canine communication. “Your dog is not giving you a hard time,” she says. “They’re having a hard time.” With support and expert guidance, you can build a deeper understanding.

By using a clicker, “you’re creating a thinking dog”—a dog who’s having fun and making positive choices rather than avoiding negative consequences. “They know they’re playing a game, and when they get the right answer, they get a reward,” says Kailly. “When you meet a dog who’s been clicker-trained, they react as if to say: what can I do for you? Can I sit? Can I spin?

She laughs. “You want the dogs to offer behaviors.

The Assistant Superintendent of the Bethlehem Area School District was born into a family that lived in a small apartment on the Southside. He was one of the first kids at the new Fountain Hill Elementary as well as a member of the legendary Broughal Rockets Basketball Team. Jack is quick to share that he is a proud graduate of Liberty High School, Class of ‘82.

“I’ve always liked school,” he says. “I’ve been in school my entire life; I’ve never not been in school”—as a student, a teacher, an administrator, and as, since Superintendent Dr. Joseph Roy recruited him to the BASD ten years ago, Assistant Superintendent.

Jack supervises the district’s 22 principals

and oversees all aspects of the academic program. He forges BASD partnerships with local organizations such as ArtsQuest, Touchstone Theatre, the Bach Choir of Bethlehem, and all of the local colleges.

He sees his job as “bringing it all together to benefit the students, the teachers, and principals, creating ongoing systems of support.” There’s not a day when he isn’t aware and grateful for how much his own life has been shaped by being a BASD kid.

“I did not come from wealth or prestige or anything like that,” Jack says. “The greatest advantage that I had in my life was a loving mother, and that I had the BASD schools behind me, in my corner.” When he was a child visiting his grandparents’ noisy house on Polk Street—“I could feel the rumbling of the freight trains, hear the

pool balls breaking at Zelko’s up the street, and flinch at the boom of the igniting blast furnaces”—he knew that Bethlehem would thrive in the future, but could not imagine that he would take such an active part in the lives of kids like himself. “I’m blessed.”

“Do many of our students face challenging circumstances? Sure,” he says. “Are teaching and learning always changing?

It’s definitely a challenge. But my job is to encourage our people, resource them, and bring the community together.” It’s part of the Bethlehem ethos that Jack Silva grew up with, that’s as much a part of him as he is a part of Bethlehem: “We can build it, we can make it bigger and better, we can achieve great things. And we can do it in every neighborhood, and we can do it for all of our kids.”

True to their Franciscan tradition, the Sisters sought a sustainable use for their remaining farmland and committed to feeding the hungry, caring for the earth, and growing healthy community.

Nourished by the support of local businesses, individuals, foundations, interfaith coalitions, and volunteers, the seed planted just 7 years ago has continued to grow. Today, the Monocacy Farm Project includes: community garden plots, production fields, a young apple orchard, a propagation greenhouse with rainwater collection, and solar power systems.

The Project’s Grow Healthy Community Initiative donates weekly supplies of organically-grown produce to area food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters throughout the growing season. Educational workshops for children and adults are presented throughout the year on gardening, ecology, health, and sustainability. In 2019, the farm initiated a “Pick-Your-Own” program for those wishing to harvest fresh fruits and vegetables. All donations received through the Community Gardens and Pick-Your-Own support the Grow Healthy Community Initiative.

One dollar for every pint of Bonn’s ‘Pink Boots Skootch’ beer purchased will benefit locally owned female businesses through a donation to CADC/CACLV.

Giving Back: Bonn Place Brewing Co. “IT WAS SOUTHSIDE OR BUST,” says Sam Masotto, known as “Grand Chancellor” of Bonn Place Brewing. He and Gina (“Co-Chancellor”) had been looking for their next act, after touring the country as the title characters in the play Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding. The tour introduced them to Bethlehem, and the city had what they were looking for: neighborhoods. Proximity to family. And possibility.

Bonn is guided by Sam and Gina’s philosophy of being the change you want to see in the world: be the neighbor you want to have, run the business you want to support. Bonn’s small, session-style English ales have won awards, but the vibe of the brewery—laid back, welcoming, TV-less (“you’d be surprised who befriends

each other because there’s no TV,” says Sam)—is what built a community.

“People were so kind and generous,” says Gina, of how they were welcomed to the SouthSide. “Our customers, staff, they’re our family. These are our people.”

And people have power. After two coworkers came in wearing the exact same shirt for a PA-based brewery— completely by chance—“Shirt Swap Saturdays” were born. Now, staff will wear shirts from a local business or nonprofit, raising awareness and funds by donating a portion of profits from beer sales. Through Shirt Swap and an ongoing cycle of fundraisers, Bonn has donated to local nonprofits including the Bethlehem Mounted Police Unit, New

Bethany Ministries, and the Bethlehem Area Public Library, to name just a few.

And for the second year in a row, Bonn has supported the local chapter of the Pink Boots Society, a national nonprofit that supports women in the beer industry.

A dollar of every sale of Pink Boots Skootch—brewed locally by Bonn from Pink Boots hops—stays right here to support local women entrepreneurs, through the Community Action Development Corporation of Bethlehem and the Lehigh Valley’s Community Action Committee.

At Bonn, generosity is a part of business as usual. “It’s one more way to give back,” says Sam, “to the community that’s given so much to us.”

Food Digester Food waste is collected and delivered daily to Food Digester, broken down by microorganism, and turned into renewable fuel and wastewater that avoid landfills. Over 69,250 pounds of food waste are diverted each year!

Sustainability Give-Back Efforts Items are donated and repurposed each year, including linens and unused rolls of toilet paper that are donated to local community shelters and animal rescues. And each spring and fall, Wind Creek staff participate in clothing and food drives to benefit those in need.
