A note from Fig

Dear Lehigh Valley...

LEHIGH VALLEY HAS A LOT TO LOVE, and this spring, the community is sharing why! The Fig team gathered quotes and stories from locals, visitors, and friends of the region, celebrating what makes this place feel like home. Find more Love Letters to Lehigh Valley sprinkled throughout this issue!

On Sundays, I wander among the vendors at the Emmaus Farmers Market, chatting with growers while music plays, dogs bark, and children laugh. It's the soundtrack of a healthy, vibrant community that values its people.

I've been to over 30 countries across five continents, but I will forever call the Lehigh Valley my home. I find myself missing the local restaurants and parks even when I'm halfway around the globe!

Some quotes have been edited for clarity and length.

I moved to the Lehigh Valley when I had my first baby, and we're still here 25 years later! We never run out of things to do and places to explore—I could spend another 25 and still never see it all!

I met the love of my life at Copperhead Grille. We married at Springtown Inn and celebrated at Iacocca Hall. Now our beautiful baby boy is growing up in Christmas City, and we can't wait for him to be a Lehigh Mountain Hawk one day!

A good experience leads to a great recommendation. After all, when something leaves people happy and satisfied, they tell others. It’s only natural. That’s why Good Shepherd Rehabilitat ion Network is proud that patient satisfaction exceeds 90% across a variety of services, with patients reporting they are overwhelmingly satisfied and willing to recommend Good Shepherd to others. That’s a big compliment and one that makes striving for the highest patient satisfaction always a high priority.

50 Years of impacting the community

SINCE 1976, Gross McGinley has grown with the Lehigh Valley, guided by founding partners who believed that practicing law and investing in their community should go hand in hand. Founding partner Malcolm J. Gross spent decades supporting the region’s cultural and educational fabric. His service as a Trustee and later Chair of the Harry C. Trexler Trust, as well as leadership roles with the Lehigh County Historical Society and Muhlenberg College, helped steward transformative investments in parks, history, and higher education across the Valley.

Fellow founding partner Paul A. McGinley also exemplifies that vision. As Co‑Chair of The Rodale Institute’s Board of Directors and a longtime board member of WDIY 88.1 FM and The Velodrome Fund, Paul long worked to strengthen community institutions right here in our backyard. He remains driven by the belief that when local organizations thrive, so do the people and businesses they serve. Together, Mal and Paul’s work reflects Gross McGinley’s belief that the most meaningful legal work does not end within the walls of their law firm; it lives on in stronger institutions, better connected neighborhoods, and opportunities created for the next generation.

50 Years of impacting the community

GROSS MCGINLEY remains dedicated to standing alongside the nonprofits, schools, and civic projects that shape this region. Downtown Allentown’s new Da Vinci Science Center is one prime example. Founding partner J. Jackson Eaton, III and the firm’s attorneys helped structure key pieces of the project’s complex financing, serving as counsel to this regional STEAM destination. For decades, Jackson has been a trusted advisor to cornerstone Lehigh Valley organizations such as ArtsQuest, KidsPeace, and the Da Vinci Science Center, guiding them through governance, financing, and growth so they can stay focused on mission and impact.

Managing Partner John F. “Jack” Gross, a lifelong Allentown resident and former chair of Da Vinci’s Board of Trustees, continues to champion the Center’s mission to expand access to science education for children across the Valley. In addition to his many years supporting Da Vinci Science Center, Jack has served on numerous boards, including Community Action Lehigh Valley, Communities In Schools of Eastern Pennsylvania, the American Red Cross, and more, where he helps advance their charitable purposes as well as educational opportunities across the Lehigh Valley. Together, Jack and Jackson show how deep community involvement, paired with thoughtful legal counsel, can quietly shape a region’s trajectory.

There can only be one #1.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has ranked St. Luke’s ahead of nationally renowned Mayo Clinic and Houston Methodist as one of the three highest‑performing health systems in the nation for quality, safety and patient experience – affirming St. Luke’s leadership among the country’s largest and best‑known health care providers.

Excellence isn’t claimed. It’s earned.

Wind Creek Bethlehem’s commitment to community

WIND CREEK BETHLEHEM

is proud to be part of the local community within the Lehigh Valley, supporting the people, programs, and places that make this region such a special place to live, learn, and gather. Through an annual financial commitment of $300,000 in community support, Wind Creek Bethlehem partners with organizations that touch every corner of the Lehigh Valley, from education and the arts to social services and youth development.

WIND CREEK BETHLEHEM

sponsorships consist of beloved cultural institutions and community pillars, including ArtsQuest, Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites, the SouthSide Arts District, and Musikfest. The property is also proud to support educational partners, including Bethlehem Area School District, Lehigh University, Northampton Community College, and Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts. It’s committed to uplifting people through organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys & Girls Club of Bethlehem, Habitat for Humanity, New Bethany, Hispanic Center Lehigh Valley, NAACP, YWCA, YMCA, Via of the Lehigh Valley, and Bradbury Sullivan LGBT Community Center.

Beyond sponsorships, Wind Creek Bethlehem extends its impact by providing an average of $90,000

per quarter in auction and raffle donations to additional local nonprofits, helping even more organizations fundraise and serve the community.

This commitment is fueled by Wind Creek Bethlehem team members through hands on involvement. They volunteer at Lehigh Valley events like Musikfest, Oktoberfest, and Christkindlmarkt, and support causes year round through initiatives such as Cops ‘n’ Kids reading programs, Hispanic Center food pantry support, SouthSide Clean Up efforts, and Bowl for Kids’ Sake with Big Brothers Big Sisters. Collection drives, from books and school supplies to food, clothing, and toys, further extend their reach to families in need across the region.

Together, these efforts reflect what makes the Lehigh Valley special: a strong sense of community, a vibrant arts and culture scene, a commitment to education, and

neighbors showing up for one another. Wind Creek Bethlehem is honored to help create opportunities to learn, gather, explore, and live in a region it is proud to call home.

“At Wind Creek Bethlehem, being part of the Lehigh Valley means more than doing business here; it means showing up for our neighbors,” stated Patrick Ryan, Executive Vice President and General Manager at Wind Creek Bethlehem. “Through our community partnerships, sponsorships, and the hands on involvement of our Team Members, we’re honored to help create opportunities that support education, the arts, and essential services throughout the region.”

Beyond the bowl

PLAYA BOWLS BETHLEHEM has proudly served the Lehigh Valley since 2017, bringing a fresh, feel good, and quality dining experience based on vibes and community. Established in Belmar, New Jersey, in 2014, Playa Bowls first took root as a niche beachside location for health conscious foodies. Since then, it has flourished nationwide and is now a destination for anyone craving fresh, flavorful bowls and smoothies.

At the heart of every bowl is Playa Bowls’ proprietary Brazil sourced açaí, crafted using the highest amount of açaí pulp in the industry for its signature flavor and smooth, creamy texture. Always blended fresh to preserve its natural richness and depth, each açaí bowl is finished with quality fresh fruit, granola, and toppings. The smoothies share the same philosophy: all whole fruits and real ingredients. No ice, no added sugar, no syrups.

Beyond standing out for quality alone, Playa Bowls Bethlehem has become a go to gathering place for families, students, and anyone pursuing an active lifestyle or wellness journey. The team is proud to support local schools, youth sports teams, fitness studios, and a variety of community events. With a bright, beachy atmosphere and hand painted murals, the shop offers a little taste of coastal paradise right in the heart of Bethlehem.

Bold hair with heart

RISE ABOVE HAIR STUDIO is Ashley Matlock’s baby. Her salon is cozy, quirky, and perfectly situated along South New Street in Bethlehem. Originally from Phillipsburg, New Jersey, Ashley discovered her passion for hairstyling while working at a salon in the Phillipsburg Mall, where she fell in love with the culture and decided to pursue cosmetology. She graduated from the Vision Academy Paul Mitchell Partner School and spent ten years honing her skills as a stylist and colorist at a Bethlehem based salon before opening her own salon in 2018.

Ashley spent her first year working solo and finding her rhythm as a business owner, eventually building a loyal clientele and infusing her space with bold patterns, original

art, and eclectic local energy. As of 2026, a recently renovated Rise Above has grown to include a new team of stylists specializing in diverse cutting, coloring, and styling techniques. Shag cuts are Ashley’s specialty, along with creative color placement and blonding—because, as she said, “You can’t have one without the other!”

A lover of all things local, Ashley is proudly “SouthSide Till I Die” and a passionate supporter of fellow hairstylists, small business owners, and the community she calls home.

Supporting cyclists & community

LEHIGH VALLEY NATIVES Lisa and John Ronca first met in the mid 1990s at local favorite The FunHouse. The pair began going on bike rides together, and the rest is history. A love of cycling has always been at the heart of their family and their business, Cutters Bike Shop, on Third Street in SouthSide Bethlehem.

The Roncas opened Cutters in 2009 after another deal to purchase an existing bike shop fell through. Instead of being discouraged, they took a risk and built their business from the ground up. Having recently celebrated 16 years on the SouthSide, the shop is more essential to the neighborhood than ever.

Cutters offers a wide range of bikes—from road, mountain, and gravel bikes to e bikes— along with gear for every level and style of rider. Lisa and John specialize in maintenance, providing routine tune ups and specialized repairs. They also educate and engage the community, recently helping the City of Bethlehem and Lehigh University launch bike share programs and provide electric bikes to officers.

Lisa and John run an annual mountain bike “enduro race” to fundraise for charity and are proud parents of 20 year old Abby, a professional mountain bike racer. They welcome anyone curious about biking, offering guidance, gear, and tips to help every rider find the perfect fit.

Business coach takes note of amazing culture that saved his life twice

AWARD-WINNING BUSINESS

COACH RICK FRANZO woke up one Sunday in September 2025 with stomach pain, doubled over in the emergency room by 5 PM , and was lying on an operating table at midnight. Yet during a time of acute stress, Rick found comfort in the medical team at St. Luke’s University Health Network.

“This was the second time St. Luke’s saved my life,” Rick said.

Rick, a 59 year old from Monroe County, has a long history with St. Luke’s. He lives with brain tumors and, in 2009, underwent surgery at St. Luke’s Bethlehem Campus to remove a large, non cancerous mass Last September, Rick turned to St. Luke’s Monroe Campus for another life saving procedure.

Rick had surgery to repair a stomach perforation caused by diverticulitis, which caused septic shock.

Dr. Gerardo Garcia performed the surgery at St. Luke’s Monroe Campus. Five days later, Rick went home to continue his recovery.

“I felt very well taken care of,” he said. “Everybody was just so engaged in the patient experience. I’ve been in the hospital for some major things, and this was a great experience.”

Rick was wowed by the culture he encountered at St. Luke’s. Culture happens to be his area of expertise. Rick, a business coach in the Poconos, helps companies build smarter, more effective teams. “Culture” is a keyword in his profession, and he called the culture at St. Luke’s “amazing.”

Rick said he encountered a team of doctors, nurses, and support staff driven to help.

He met medical students who thoughtfully engaged in his treatment. And he praised Dr. Garcia for his empathetic approach to the surgery.

“The culture there was absolutely second to none,” Rick said. “I spoke to some of my larger clients about it. I told them, ‘This is what every company should aspire to.’ Whether it was day shift or night shift, everybody was pleasant, respectful, and responsive. I can sum it up like this: Everybody really gave a damn.” Rick required significant follow up care, including a second surgery in December. Dr. Garcia assured Rick that he would perform the procedure at St. Luke’s Monroe Campus. Rick appreciated “the care close to home.” “They made me very comfortable in a very uncomfortable situation,” Rick said. “They saved my life. Again.”

Medicine on the move

VALLEY HEALTH PARTNERS (VHP) STREET MEDICINE

PROGRAM brings compassionate primary and urgent health care directly to people experiencing homelessness throughout the Lehigh Valley. Built on the belief that everybody matters, the team meets patients where they are—whether in shelters, soup kitchens, under bridges, or in the woods—to deliver high quality care in the location of their choice. In every season and all kinds of weather, these providers brave the elements to ensure no one is left without care.

Through a holistic, patient led approach, the team not only treats medical needs but also addresses barriers to access that traditional health care can

sometimes miss. Patients receive on the spot services such as behavioral health and medication administration, plus connections to care coordination, mail services, donor funded medical respite, survival support, social security assistance, insurance enrollment, recovery support, criminal justice navigation, and housing resources.

Medical care is offered on a scheduled rotation at designated community sites throughout Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton. The team also conducts street outreach four out of five weekdays, often including evening hours, focusing on those living unhoused.

LEADS She

This section shines a light on local women bringing ideas to life, building businesses from the ground up, and showing up for their communities in meaningful ways. Some lead small businesses and community organizations with bold vision, while others grow teams and big ideas with quiet determination— and all are making their mark. These pages are filled with stories of passion, creativity, leadership, and service, proving that when women lead, the Lehigh Valley flourishes.

Thank you to our issue sponsor, BSI Corporate Benefits . BSI partners with employers to deliver smarter, more transparent employee benefits solutions that create meaningful outcomes for both businesses and their people. With a focus on innovation, advocacy, and a deeply human approach, BSI helps organizations nationwide improve well-being, reduce healthcare costs, and build stronger workplace cultures.

THE QUIET STRENGTH behind BSI

IF YOU SPEND EVEN TEN MINUTES

inside BSI’s Bethlehem office, one thing becomes clear: this is a workplace built on connection. Two colleagues sit shoulder to shoulder at a whiteboard, deep in the kind of problem solving that pulls people in rather than wearing them down. Someone pauses on their way to a meeting to offer a quick pat on the shoulder or an extra set of hands when a project turns challenging. These everyday moments—quiet, genuine, and unforced—reveal a culture where people show up for one another, not because it’s expected, but because it’s who they are.

BSI’s way of building a notable employer brand is rooted in compassion, warmth, and a commitment to showing up. Decisions are made with people in mind, and policies are built to simplify life, not complicate it.

With a majority women team, BSI is naturally shaped by attentiveness and responsiveness to people’s real lives. It’s seen in the flexibility offered when someone needs support and the openness during change. That majority women composition isn’t a statistic to be celebrated in a press release; it’s visible in how meetings are run, feedback is given, and success is measured.

At the center of this extraordinary workplace is Chief People Officer Valerie “Val” Lewis. Calm, grounded, and people focused, Val notices what others might overlook—remembering a tough appointment, checking in after a family emergency, and ensuring each team member has what they need to succeed.

Val’s leadership is shaped by her lived experience. “Breast cancer reshaped the way I view the world, but more than anything, it strengthened my commitment to lead with empathy,” Val reflected. “The support I received from my BSI team throughout my diagnosis and now into survivorship showed me what it truly means to show up for one another. I’ve seen how powerful it is when people feel genuinely cared for, not just managed—and that’s the kind of leadership I strive to bring forward every day.”

In a moment when many organizations are rethinking how they support and retain their people, BSI offers a quieter answer. Its strength comes from leaders who notice, colleagues who consistently show up, and a culture built not just on performance, but on compassion and trust.

“I was born and raised in the Lehigh Valley, and I never left because this community has always been my compass. I love this Valley for the way it shaped me, with its heart, strength, and sense of belonging. I bring that same love and grounded strength into every conversation, decision, and moment of leadership.”

WOMEN POWERING CHANGE, together

THE ENERGY AT SHE NAILED IT! is contagious—hundreds of community members cheering as teams of women compete in a nail hammering relay, decked out in themed costumes, safety goggles, and tool belts.

Born 14 years ago from an idea sparked by Annie Osika and a volunteer committee, the event has grown into the largest annual fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity of the Lehigh Valley and a model inspiring other Habitat affiliates nationwide, demonstrating how women led, community driven generosity creates lasting change.

At the heart of She Nailed It! are teams of women who set ambitious goals, rally their networks, and champion for safe, stable, and affordable housing. The event also allows local companies to highlight female employees and show commitment to equity. Their collective effort fuels Habitat’s work well beyond the event itself.

This year’s She Nailed It! takes place Monday, May 4, at Dimmick Park. There’s still time to participate by forming a team, sponsoring the event, or donating a raffle item. Get involved at habitatlv.org.

AT THE YOGA LOFT in South Bethlehem, studio owner and director Rachel Abott has spent 20 years building an inclusive wellness community for all ages. Now, by expanding to the North Side with Oasis: Community Wellbeing Hub, she is broadening that mission to encompass physical, mental, and emotional well being—complete with a tea and juice bar and free mental health resources. LEADING THE NEXT Evolution of ArtsQuest

Kassie Hilgert, President & CEO

Linny Award nominations are now open.

EVOLUTION HAS ALWAYS BEEN at the heart of ArtsQuest. Framed by the towering blast furnaces of the former Bethlehem Steel, the site has transformed from an industrial powerhouse into the region’s premier destination for music, arts, and community celebration. Today, ArtsQuest creates opportunities for people to gather and make lasting memories.

Those memories are part of what drew President and CEO Kassie Hilgert to the organization she now leads. “I had made so many lifelong memories going to Musikfest and Christkindlmarkt,” Kassie reflected. “I was awestruck by the idea of having even a small hand in helping create those memories for the two million people we serve each year.”

Since joining ArtsQuest in 2008, Kassie has helped guide the organization through remarkable growth by expanding programming, strengthening partnerships, and deepening community impact. She consistently emphasizes the vital role of colleagues, volunteers, sponsors, donors, and members in advancing ArtsQuest’s mission.

Now, ArtsQuest stands on the brink of another defining chapter.

“With this current capital campaign, we have the chance to evolve yet again and create transformational impact,” Kassie said. “The Re Imagine That! Capital Campaign reflects our belief that creativity fuels community, and that investing in the arts is invaluable to the vitality of the Lehigh Valley.”

The campaign will fund transformative spaces designed to elevate the region as a destination for artists, visitors, and employers. Additions such as the ArtsQuest Creative Factory powered by PPL and the Lehigh Valley Health Network, part of Jefferson Health Turn & Grind Shop will create more welcoming, inclusive spaces for festivals, education, and year round programming.

Reflecting on her leadership, Kassie shared humbly: “I hope those who knew me would say, ‘She gave other people a voice and a chance to make change. This place is a little better because she was here.’ That would be nice.”

TELLING THE STORY OF water

LIESEL GROSS’S JOURNEY to CEO of Lehigh County Authority (LCA) began nearly three decades ago with a spark of curiosity. She saw an ad for a public relations role at LCA and asked herself: Why does the story of water need to be told? That question, combined with LCA’s support, has guided her work ever since.

Today, LCA is a public, nonprofit water and wastewater utility known for protecting public health, supporting regional growth, maintaining infrastructure, and preserving the environment. Every day, employees keep water flowing and ensure safe, reliable service.

Since becoming CEO ten years ago, Liesel and her team have focused on increasing customer engagement, expanding the workforce, and keeping pace with new technology—all to support a rapidly growing customer base in the City of Allentown and surrounding communities.

Liesel also champions future water leaders through mentorship, internships, scholarship committees, and programs like HydroMania, an educational watershed festival reaching more than 23,000 students. Her vision keeps the water flowing—and the Lehigh Valley thriving.

“Dear Lehigh Valley, you continue to blossom and grow, and the LCA team is proud to make sure the water flows to support you!”

BRINGING SCIENCE TO the parks

WHEN THE ALLENTOWN ROTARY brought together two women leaders—Rosaria Stoops, Executive Director of Friends of the Allentown Parks, and Julie Ambrose, Director of Philanthropy at Da Vinci Science Center—they helped their organizations join forces to bring learning and community to the city’s parks.

Last summer, Friends of the Allentown Parks offered 20 free science classes delivered by Da Vinci Science Center to children during the City of Allentown’s summer day camp, teaching young explorers science principles and encouraging them to think like scientists. The initiative reflects Friends of the Allentown Parks’ mission to create vibrant, inclusive parks and Da Vinci Science Center’s mission to inspire curiosity and ignite a passion for science.

Julie Ambrose (left) and Rosaria Stoops (right)

“Dear Lehigh Valley, thank you for being our constant companion, our teacher, our refuge. Thank you for reminding us, every single day, that we are part of something larger than ourselves—a community rooted in this beautiful valley, growing together.”

THIS SUMMER, with community support, they hope to expand the program and bring even more free classes to Allentown children in all the city parks.

Support their work by donating and attending Nerd Night at Da Vinci Science Center on April 10 . Tickets are available at davincisciencecenter.org/experience/nerdnite.

FLORAL ART for homethe

“Dear Lehigh Valley, we didn’t fall in love at first sight, but your people and places became home, and this is where I choose to stay. You gave me lifelong friends, beautiful memories, and the love of my life.”
— Kim Niswender

IN HER GRANDMOTHER’S BROOKLYN GARDEN, among Peace roses and bleeding hearts, Kim Niswender first learned that beauty could be a refuge. That early love followed her through a childhood shaped by creativity and resilience, and eventually carried her to the Lehigh Valley when her family relocated during her eighth grade year. The Lehigh Valley offered Kim space to grow, to heal, and to see the world through a new lens. Photography, her first love, patiently waited while she built stability, only to bloom again decades later through Kim Marie Art Designs.

Today, Kim’s nature inspired photographic works transform flowers, organic patterns, and everyday details into floral compositions. Created through digital photography and photo illustration, her art is designed to bring a sense of calm into living spaces and gathering places, inviting collectors to invest in their homes with intention.

Kim’s work is a love letter to her family and herself as an artist. Her Rose Nouveau Collection, in particular, honors her grandmother’s legacy.

Authentic: Amanda Pietrobono

TO AMANDA PIETROBONO, returning home to the Lehigh Valley was always part of the plan.

After studying at The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, and working as a pastry chef in New York City, she felt drawn back to the community that shaped her. “I wanted to raise my family here,” she said. With extended family just minutes away, that support system makes the long, unpredictable hours of hospitality possible.

Coming home also allowed her to align her culinary background with a greater purpose. Throughout her career, Amanda came to see food as deeply personal— tied to memory, culture, comfort, and sometimes complicated emotions. She also witnessed significant waste within the food system, where much of the food produced never reaches a table. That perspective now guides her work as Director of Operations & Culinary Medicine at Kellyn.

Co founded by her mother, Dr. Meagan Grega, in 2007, Kellyn has long been part of Amanda’s story.

She joined the team in 2017 as the organization built its commercial teaching kitchen, helping expand programming and access to nutrition education across the region. Through Kellyn Kitchens, she helps ensure surplus food serves people rather than landfills.

Amanda wears many hats, from running school programs and teaching in community gardens to baking bread and managing staff. She also manages Llantrisant Event Venue, a historic building that houses both Kellyn and a host of community gatherings.

Describing herself as “caring, determined, and slightly chaotic,” Amanda believes small, intentional actions create ripple effects that strengthen the entire Lehigh Valley. “Our programs and spaces are built with intention, collaboration, and heart,” she said. “We’re committed to creating opportunities for healthier lives and meaningful connections, and we truly believe community is at the center of that work.”

Nourishing bodies and relationships

BASED IN TATAMY, Kellyn and Llantrisant Event Venue work hand in hand to foster a stronger, healthier Lehigh Valley.

Since 2007, Kellyn has empowered local families through food education and access. School initiatives, mobile markets, and community gardens help bridge gaps in access to fresh, nourishing ingredients. Surplus food is redistributed to those in need, and unused produce is composted to enrich local gardens. The nonprofit also equips children and families with practical knowledge about how food fuels long term healthy lifestyles.

This impact is made possible by Kellyn’s dedicated team, volunteers, and community partners. Together, they expand access, strengthen connections, and help build a healthier community.

JUST UPSTAIRS from Kellyn’s teaching kitchen, Llantrisant Event Venue offers a historic and inviting space where the community can gather. Over its more than 100 year history, the building has held railroad barracks, carriage manufacturing, coffee roasting, antique shops, and a yoga studio. Today, it provides a warm, character filled space for weddings, birthdays, corporate events, and other celebrations.

EVENT PARKING & KELLYN KITCHEN

The venue is managed by a passionate team committed to creating memorable experiences. Over the years, the venue has grown from occasional events to a nearly fully booked calendar, driven largely by word of mouth.

Together, Kellyn and Llantrisant Event Venue support the community in complementary ways. One nourishes the body and mind through food access and education, while the other strengthens relationships through shared celebration. Whether feeding a family, teaching a child about nutrition, or hosting a milestone event, their combined efforts reflect the power of thoughtful, community centered action.

Community members can get involved by volunteering in school gardens or mobile markets, booking an event, or choosing Kellyn Kitchen for catering, which directly supports additional initiatives. Visit the Kellyn and Llantrisant Event Venue websites to learn more.

Board Member Alexandra Woytowicz and her daughters

Giving Back: Ribbons of C.A.R.E.

RIBBONS OF C.A.R.E. is a local nonprofit born from lived experience. When founder Alecia Fegley was diagnosed with cancer at 28 while raising three young children, she quickly realized how fragile childcare support becomes when a parent faces serious illness. Rather than accept that gap, she transformed it into purpose, creating an organization dedicated to supporting parents battling cancer.

Today, Ribbons of C.A.R.E. serves as a lifeline for families navigating serious medical conditions by covering the cost of childcare, whether in daycare, in home, or through a trusted family member or friend, so parents can attend surgeries, medical appointments, treatments, or simply rest.

Board Member Alexandra Woytowicz understands this reality firsthand. As a mom who has also faced a cancer diagnosis while raising young children, her connection to the mission is deeply personal. “When a parent is facing a serious medical challenge, routine and stability can quickly fall apart,” she

shared. “Providing childcare support allows parents to attend treatment or rest without guilt, while giving children a sense of normalcy during an otherwise frightening time.”

Through its Childcare Grant Program, Holiday Support, and C.A.R.E. Craft Box Project, the organization provides direct, tangible assistance that eases both financial and emotional strain. Unlike many nonprofits focused solely on awareness, Ribbons of C.A.R.E. delivers immediate financial relief for childcare expenses. Support goes straight to local families.

“It’s incredibly meaningful,” Alexandra said. “Knowing our efforts reduce stress for parents and provide security for children is deeply fulfilling.”

With plans to expand programming and hopes of opening a dedicated resource center and crisis nursery, Ribbons of C.A.R.E. continues to grow its impact. To learn more about their incredible work, visit ribbonsofcare.org.

How St. Luke’s Orthopedic Hospital helped a student-athlete return stronger than ever

FOR BETHLEHEM CATHOLIC HIGH

SCHOOL SENIOR GAVYN MOYER, the idea of knee surgery was daunting. A dedicated multi sport athlete, Gavyn suddenly faced months of recovery, difficult rehabilitation, and the heartbreak of being sidelined from lacrosse, his favorite sport.

But just six months after arthroscopic surgery at St. Luke’s Orthopedic Hospital West End Campus, Gavyn was back on the field, competing in soccer and golf pain‑free, and preparing confidently for his return to lacrosse this spring. The procedure also offered a major long‑term benefit: reducing his risk of early arthritis.

Gavyn, 17, suffered a significant bucket meniscus tear while wrestling last winter. This type of injury, common among athletes who hyperextend their knees, occurs when the meniscus remains attached but flips inward, blocking motion and causing sharp pain. Without treatment, such tears not only impair mobility but can also accelerate cartilage damage and lead to early onset arthritis.

Given the severity of the injury, Dr. Scott Doroshow of St. Luke’s Orthopedic Care recommended surgery. A fellowship orthopedic sports medicine surgeon,
