ART IS ALL AROUND US. It’s woven into the architecture we walk past, the galleries we frequent, the kitchens of local restaurants, and the workspaces where creative ideas flourish. In this, our annual arts and culture issue, we’re celebrating the artistic tapestry that is Lancaster City.

And in our Art Forms section, you’ll meet makers and artists who are using age-old mediums in modern ways—including Olivia Stoltzfus, featured on our cover, who is using her vintage loom to create functional pieces for the home from her Prince Street gallery.

When the idea for Fig was born nearly 21 years ago, we uncovered a quiet little city with pockets of magic—where creativity was growing in side-street workshops, up-and-coming performance venues, and creative firms that were reimagining what Lancaster could be. Today, our city is in full bloom. And our passion for telling the stories of creative entrepreneurs who are planting roots and making global impact has kept us excited about this work for more than two decades.

Fresh Face | Welcoming new businesses to Lancaster City

Fresh Face: RHYLEASE Indoor Cycling AT RHYLEASE INDOOR CYCLING, fitness isn’t the goal— it’s the side effect. Founder Megan Felizzi created RHYLEASE as a space where people can let go of what’s weighing them down, even if working out hasn’t been their thing.

It was more than 15 years ago when Felizzi found a passion for spin after growing bored of standard gym routines.

Music spilling out of a spin class pulled her in, and it wasn’t long before she auditioned to become an instructor.

A former nurse and classically trained opera singer, Felizzi developed her own spin style at the intersection of rhythm, physiology, music, and the freedom to move more than just the body.

“Spin became a way to move things out of myself. No matter how I walked into the room, I left feeling lighter and better equipped to take on life,” Felizzi shared. “I honed my focus on matching the music to how I was feeling, which helped me define what RHYLEASE is.”

The renovated Stehli Silk Mill had the industrial grit that felt right for opening her own music-focused, immersive studio.

“It’s like finding yourself in the middle of a flash mob, and somehow, you know the moves,” she explained.

After operating in a temporary space for a year, Felizzi and her coaching team opened their permanent studio last March.

Over the last 18 months, RHYLEASE has built a community of inclusivity. There are no leaderboards, no scales, and no pressure to compete. “It doesn’t matter if you’ve never increased your heart rate or if you’re a lifelong athlete, everyone belongs in the room,” Felizzi explained.

Each instructor builds classes around a consistent coaching methodology while curating an experience that feels authentic to them. The structure is intentional, but no two instructors or classes are the same.

Felizzi encourages first-time riders to start with the standard RHYLEASE class and arrive early so the team can help you get comfortable with a bike before class.

“Some days you need to feel strong. Some days you need to get out of your head. Some days you just need somewhere to put everything you’re carrying,” Felizzi said.

Fresh Face: Olivia's Fine Art MAKING HER DEBUT on Lancaster City’s infamous Gallery Row in early 2026, Olivia Stoltzfus is a rising force in the local art community. Her new space, Olivia’s Fine Art, is designed to be a working artist’s studio and gallery, where she welcomes people in to see her finished works on display while encouraging patrons to talk with her as she works on her latest pieces.

A textile artist and painter with a degree from the Rhode Island School of Design, Olivia’s breadth of work spans mediums and continents—from egg tempura works from her artist residency in Tuscany to acrylic paintings of her native Lancaster County to woven pieces crafted on her well-loved loom that sits in the middle of her gallery space.

Olivia credits her family for nurturing an appreciation for beauty and a creative spirit during her formative years as an emerging artist.

“I was lucky to be encouraged and identified as an artist early in my life by the people who love me and the people I love,” she shared. “And as one of five siblings in a creative household, there was no shortage of inspiration and imagination.”

“My mom curated such a beautiful home for us, and now that I’ve started my gallery, I appreciate the art of setting up a space in a new way,” she added.

Both had a strong pull towards entrepreneurship when they met, and nearly a decade later, they are the proud founders of Fontana Candle Co.— a household name in Lancaster and an Inc. 5000 fastest-growing company.

“After we met in 2015, we eventually wanted to own something together,” Katie shared. “But we had no idea it would be candles.”

When they got married in 2017, a friend gifted them a name brand candle that smelled great but left them both with terrible headaches after just one day of burning. After some extensive research, the Roerings were horrified to find all the toxins commonly found in these popular products.

The dilemma of finding an alternative piqued their interests, and candle-making became their Thursday date night activity.

“Eric spearheaded the ingredients research and learned the science of it all,” Katie shared. “When we decided on beeswax mixed with coconut oil, it took us over 150 different tries to get our blend just right.”

Eric and Katie also decided on an all-natural wooden wick so their non-toxic candles would be completely clean burning, and by 2018, they had officially launched Fontana. They started small, attending Lancaster markets and slowly building an e-commerce website. By 2021, the business had gained enough traction to support them both as their full-time jobs.

“Five years into doing this full-time, we have 19 people on our team,” Katie mused. “It’s crazy to think candles are supporting all these families.”

In the last year and a half, Katie and Eric have been focused on building out their leadership team, as well as preparing for a move to a larger location that will allow them to automate some of their manufacturing process process—which will make them the largest all-natural candle manufacturer in the country.

“This is about so much more than making a candle to smell good. We’re making a candle that people who are sensitive to chemicals and fragrances can enjoy and those with cancer can feel confident lighting during their treatments,” Katie emphasized. “That’s really what has kept us going— our mission.”

Fresh Face: Marlo + Kroft WHEN A BUDDING INTERIOR DESIGNER fell in love with an architecture student at Penn State University, owning a creative firm together seemed like the perfect next step. For Maiata and Brett Carlton, founders of Marlo + Kroft, the path to starting their business wasn’t that straightforward. “We always thought we’d work together someday,” Brett reminisced.

“We needed to get experience out in the world before it could happen.”

After graduation, Maiata set off for grad school in New York City before working a number of years in the high-end residential design industry. Although she gained a wealth of knowledge, she struggled with the reality that she could only help a small percentage of people. It was when she made a leap into the corporate commercial world that she was able to expand her skills to serve a broader range of clients—and where she met Yumin Lee Yoon, who would eventually become a trusted colleague and Marlo + Kroft's Creative Director.

“My favorite thing is witnessing people use spaces we’ve created,” Maiata shared. “That always brings me back to why I love this work—to improve spaces for people.”

As for Brett, he found a love for architecture at the intersection of art and structure. His work over the years was focused on creatively thinking about the details and the way people function in a space. Those talents really came together in 2019 when the beginnings of Marlo + Kroft began to take shape.

“Benefiting the world with better spaces is really our core mission,” Brett explained. “We believe in approaching design differently—really leaning into listening and designing alongside our clients.” Now that the pair has relocated to Lancaster City, they are excited to dive into the local culture and bring their unique perspective to clients near and far.

Yumin, who is based in Brooklyn, shares in the vision for providing design services to people with a broad spectrum of style and budgets. “Being in a great space makes you feel better, and we believe everyone deserves to live in a well-designed space,” she added. “It really changes your attitude, how you approach life, and how you show up in the world.”

Fresh Face: Fourth & Lowland Design FOURTH & LOWLAND IS A NEW DESIGN FIRM founded by consumer healthcare professional-turned-interior designer Jennifer Hess. After a decades-long career in the corporate world, Jennifer is embracing her knack for curating both beauty and function.

connect the dots on my business name. To me, the name pulls together all the artistry that inspires me—from music to writing to design.”

With a growing portfolio and a freshly launched website, Jennifer is continually grateful for the relationships she gets to build with her clients. “I really prioritize communication,” she said. “I want the people I work with to feel comfortable sharing and collaborating with me throughout the design process.”

I wanted to be a lawyer from a young age. Since I’ve always had a passion for working with children, family law was a logical area of focus. I always try to focus on a resolution that will be in the children’s best interests.

What’s one thing everyone should know about family law?

Family law touches most people’s lives, but I always encourage clients to understand that every case is unique.

You can become really frustrated if you start to compare your matter to what happened in someone else’s case.

Why did you open your office in Downtown Lancaster?

My partner and I both grew up in Lancaster County, and we love the city. We were incredibly lucky to find a historic building so close to the courthouse that really exemplifies all the beauty that Lancaster has to offer.

ana Hanchin believes in taking risks to see change in the world—a key philosophy she brings to her role as President and CEO of HDC MidAtlantic, as well as throughout her 30-year career in affordable housing.

Before she made her way east, Dana grew up in Western Pennsylvania, where her grandfathers were steelworkers and her father was a U.S. Marine. Her family taught her the value of hard work, perseverance, and delivering on your promises.

When her dad finished his service, he got married and struggled to find work in an industry that was losing ground. “My family was a microcosm of what can happen in communities when economies shift,” she shared.

Her father did what he had to do to support his family and create opportunities for his three daughters. Through a federal homeownership program, her family became firsttime homeowners and found greater stability—an experience that showed Dana at an early age how access to housing opportunities can change a family’s trajectory.

As a first-generation college graduate, she studied political science at Kent State University followed by earning her master’s in urban studies from Temple University. She then began working as a housing organizer in Philadelphia, where she saw echoes of her own family’s experiences as she worked alongside residents to create thriving neighborhoods.

“We focused on connecting with residents, businesses, nonprofits, and other stakeholders to figure out what kind of change they wanted to see in their communities—with a particular lens around affordable housing,” she shared.

needed to deliver tangible outcomes. In 2008, Dana led a major housing and economic recovery program for the City of Philadelphia, helping communities navigate the aftermath of the foreclosure crisis. As her expertise deepened, so did her conviction about the larger purpose behind the work.

“At the core of my work has always been a commitment to housing justice,” Dana said. “I believe that everyone should have access to housing that meets their needs based on what they can afford.”

When Dana came to Lancaster to lead HDC in 2018, the opportunity represented a culmination of her professional experience and her passion. Now with 150 employees, 65 affordable housing communities, and over 4,500 residents to serve across a three-state footprint, Dana is focused on ensuring both HDC employees and the residents feel seen, valued, and heard in the decisions that affect them.

“As a community, we have a responsibility to say, ‘Are we really meeting the true needs of our residents so everyone can thrive?’” she added.
