Summertime in Columbia has its own rhythm.

Patios fill as the sun starts to set, iced coffee replaces hot, and long dinners stretch a little later into the evening. Across the city, people gather around tables that feel both familiar and brand new, reminding us that food has always been one of the ways that our community comes together.

From the newest concepts opening their doors for the first time to the institutions that have fed generations of customers, Columbia’s food scene continues to grow in ways that feel both exciting and enduring.

In the last year alone, we’ve welcomed new energy as it arrives across the city in the form of chef-driven restaurants and neighborhood coffee shops and in open gathering places in the BullStreet District, the Vista, Main Street, and beyond. Columbia is evolving, one shared table at a time.

At the same time, some of our most meaningful meals still happen in places that have stood the test of time. Villa Tronco Italian Restaurant—South Carolina’s oldest restaurant—has served generations of families, students, legislators, soldiers, and loyal regulars since 1940. Places like Villa Tronco remind us that local restaurants become far more than just a business over

A South Carolina salute As America approaches its 250 th anniversary, this year’s Salute from the Shore carries even deeper meaning. What began 18 years ago as a simple conversation between friends on a South Carolina beach has grown into one of the low country’s most beloved Independence Day traditions, honoring the service members who spend the holiday protecting the freedoms that others gather to celebrate.

Founded by Johnny Folsom and Toddy Smith, alongside their sons Andy Folsom and Cam Smith, Salute from the Shore was created as a visible tribute to the men and women serving our country both at home and abroad.

Each Fourth of July, thousands line the South Carolina coastline from Myrtle Beach to Bluffton to witness the patriotic flyover featuring military aircraft, vintage warbirds, and awe-inspiring displays of aviation history and American pride.

Salute from the Shore serves as a reminder that freedom is sustained through service, sacrifice, and community.

Whether viewed from a beach chair, a boardwalk, or a boat along the coast, the annual flyover offers a powerful moment to pause, look skyward, and share in a salute to those who continue to defend the country’s enduring spirit.

Authentic Erin Curtis For the Common Ground issue of Fig Columbia, we’re celebrating the small businesses, cuisines, and public spaces that bind us, weaving shared experiences and connections throughout our community. And there’s no event or initiative in Columbia that embodies the mission of this issue more than Soda City Market. Part farmers market, part street festival, Soda City has become the centerpiece of our city: a venue for artisans, chefs, baristas, and gardeners to share their wares with locals and travelers in the open air.

Though she would never admit it, Soda City’s level of regional and national success is due in no small part to its co-owner and CEO, Erin Curtis, this issue’s Fig Authentic.

She first worked with the market years ago, serving as a parttime manager to support Emile DeFelice, the founder of what was then called the All Local Farmers Market. After living in Washington D.C. for a few years, she returned to Columbia and eventually rejoined the team in what Emile calls her “second tour of Soda City.”

Now with a steady Main Street presence and an enthusiastic community of vendors and visitors, Erin approached her new role with one overarching goal in mind: to build an internal structure for this company that could last.

And last, it has.

“Emile and I never thought it would become what it is today,” Erin said. “That was never on the vision board.”

Now spanning five downtown blocks, Soda City hosts 200 producer-only vendors and 7,000 visitors every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.—serving Columbia with the precision and versatility of a Swiss army knife. It’s a launching pad for new small businesses, a favorite breakfast and lunch spot for regulars, a tourist destination for travelers from near and far.

And now, the market has been recognized on a national stage.

Last year, Soda City was voted the Best Farmers Market in the nation in the USA Today 10Best awards—beating out every major city market in the country.

Throughout all the success, Erin remains grounded in her intentions to help the market’s vendors become as successful as possible. “If anyone has worked for a small business or started their own small business, they understand how hard it is, and we want to make it less hard for them.” Erin said.

“So that’s our guiding principle: do what we can to help them grow their businesses.”

So far, 32 market vendors have now opened their own brick and mortars, building from their foundation at Soda City.

Summer brings its challenges, too, to the Clinic’s operations. Many of its volunteers are university students who leave the city during the summer, creating gaps in the Clinic’s teams and, ultimately, the support they can offer to patients. Good Samaritan Clinic is actively seeking new volunteer providers to serve one evening a month—or more, if they so choose— so patients do not experience any gap in care, attention, or responsiveness.

Social Mission Good Samaritan Clinic Summer is here, and with the season comes new initiatives for our 2026 Social Mission partner, Good Samaritan Clinic. Built by Dr. Lidia Navarrete 25 years ago to show God’s love in tangible ways by providing free essential and preventative healthcare services to the community, the ministry is now entering an exciting new era—one that is introducing even more resources to its patients.

“We’re preparing to launch free monthly support groups in both English and Spanish, where we’ll provide food and childcare to remove barriers to participation,” Executive Director Mike Young shared. This new offering will serve as a gateway to patients new to mental health treatment and help. A licensed therapist—one of the many volunteer providers who make Good Samaritan Clinic’s work possible—will lead each session, and can then connect patients to the Clinic’s free, one-on-one

counseling.

These support groups are coming at a crucial time for local families. With shifting summer schedules, as children are home from school and work hours may undergo changes, patients often see their stress increase. This can affect not just the mind, but the whole body, magnifying the symptoms of chronic conditions like high blood pressure.

With expanded mental health support, the Clinic is helping their patients navigate changes while recognizing that physical health is intrinsically tied with emotional wellbeing.

“We recognize that health is deeply connected to life circumstances, so we work to address not just medical needs, but also the social and emotional challenges our patients face,” Mike said.

“Ultimately, we want every person who comes to Good Samaritan Clinic to leave not only with care, but with a sense of

This need extends far beyond the summer months: their capacity to help patients directly correlates with their number of volunteers.
