By design A note from Fig
WHETHER IT’S A BUILDING, a business, a work of art, or a community, the things that leave a lasting impression are rarely created by accident. They’re shaped with intention, refined over time, and designed to serve a greater purpose. This issue of Fig Lehigh Valley explores the idea of Form + Function—celebrating the places, people, and ideas that remind us good design goes far beyond aesthetics. From innovative workplaces and welcoming gathering spaces to leaders investing in future generations and stronger communities, every story reflects the thoughtful decisions that shape how we live, work, and connect. Inside these pages, you’ll discover businesses preserving history while creating new experiences, nonprofits building brighter futures one opportunity at a time, and creative minds reimagining what their
spaces—and their impact—can become. Together, they remind us that the best design doesn’t simply look good; it helps people live, connect, and thrive. A special thank-you to Capital Blue Cross, our issue sponsor, for supporting this edition of Fig Lehigh Valley and for its ongoing commitment to helping our communities thrive through health, well-being, and meaningful connection. As you turn these pages, I hope you’re inspired to notice the thoughtful details all around you—the places that welcome you, the leaders who invest in others, and the communities intentionally built to help people thrive. After all, the best things in life don’t happen by chance—they happen by design. Thoughtfully, Ashley Russo

Designed for every heart A S T H E R E G I O N ’ S # 1 H E A RT A N D VA S C U L A R P R O G R A M , St. Luke’s University Health Network has built a reputation for exceptional heart care and clinical excellence. This fall, St. Luke’s will make the largest investment in its history with the opening of the St. Luke’s Heart Hospital, located at Anderson Campus, redefining the future of heart care in the Lehigh Valley. The only dedicated heart hospital in the region, this facility is designed exclusively around the needs of heart patients and their families, providing highly specialized care in a patient-centered environment. Building
companies that last T H E B U S I N E S S L A N D S C A P E has never evolved faster. Artificial intelligence is transforming how teams work, improving efficiency, and unlocking possibilities once thought unimaginable. BSI welcomes that progress because innovation has always been part of moving businesses forward. Yet amid constant change, one truth remains timeless: companies don’t build enduring success through technology alone; they build it through the people who power it. The organizations that stand the test of time aren’t remembered because they adopted the newest platform or embraced the latest trend first. They’re remembered because they built cultures people wanted to be part of, developed leaders who inspired others, earned trust through every interaction, and understood that behind every business decision is a human being. Technology may change how work is done, but people will always define the why. That belief has shaped BSI since its founding. BSI’s role extends far beyond designing benefits strategies. They partner with organizations to strengthen one of their greatest competitive advantages: their people. By helping employers attract and retain exceptional talent, improve employee well-being, and foster workplaces where leadership and culture thrive, BSI helps build organizations positioned for sustainable growth.
That same philosophy continues to shape its evolution. This year, BSI welcomed Kelly Chando as Chief of Staff and Gianna Arrindell as Vice President of Operations, expanding the executive leadership team to six. Their expertise in strategic leadership, operational excellence, and client experience strengthens the team’s ability to anticipate challenges, deliver innovative solutions, and provide the personalized partnership their clients expect. These appointments aren’t simply investments in leadership; they’re investments in the future of their clients and the communities they proudly serve. Everything BSI does is grounded in the principles that inspired its name: Balance. Strength. Integrity. They are more than values; they are commitments. Balance reminds us that sustainable success begins with investing in people. Strength is demonstrated through resilience, thoughtful leadership, and the courage to embrace change. Integrity is the promise that every recommendation, partnership, and decision will always put clients’ interests first. The future belongs to organizations that embrace innovation without losing sight of what matters most. Because building companies that last has never been about keeping pace with change. It’s about earning trust, creating opportunity, and investing in the one competitive advantage that will never go out of style: people.

Building community for 50 years S I N C E 1 9 7 6 , Gross McGinley has built its legacy not simply through legal service, but through its relationships with the businesses and people that make Pennsylvania home. That commitment is reflected in the firm’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity of the Lehigh Valley, which brings people together to create strength, stability, and opportunity through affordable housing. Partner Kellie Rahl-Heffner, chair of Gross McGinley’s Family Law Practice Group, has championed and sustained the firm’s involvement. Through her leadership, attorneys and staff have rallied around Habitat’s mission, with a strong annual participation in She Nailed It! and supporting neighbors who are building brighter futures. This ongoing support reflects a belief that has guided the firm from the very beginning: strong communities begin with people who care about one another and lend their time, talents, and resources. Over five decades, Gross McGinley attorneys and staff have carried that belief into board service, volunteer work, nonprofit counsel, charitable giving, and community events throughout the region. Under Kellie Rahl-Heffner’s leadership, this longstanding partnership offers a powerful reminder of what community investment can accomplish. A home is more than a physical space. It is where families find security, children grow, and neighbors form connections that strengthen communities. As Gross McGinley celebrates 50 Years of Impact, the firm will continue investing in the people and neighborhoods that make up the Lehigh Valley, helping build a future rooted in compassion and collaboration for generations to come.

Right at home in Emmaus O N A N Y G I V E N D A Y I N E M M A U S , the character of the borough reveals itself in small but meaningful ways, from sunlight catching on historic facades, to neighbors gathering in familiar spaces, to local businesses shaping the rhythm of Main Street. It is a place where the past and present exist comfortably side by side, and where community is not just a concept, but a daily experience. Within that landscape, Gross McGinley’s presence is woven into the fabric of the community itself. The firm’s connection to Emmaus is not defined by a single role, but by a collection of contributions that reflect both professional dedication and personal investment. Through the Emmaus Community Foundation, board member Sarah Hart Charette supports initiatives that strengthen and sustain the community at a local level. Jason A. Ulrich, serving
as Solicitor for the Borough of Emmaus, helps guide the legal considerations behind the borough’s continued evolution. Marc S. Fisher’s work as Solicitor for the East Penn School District connects the firm to an educational system that has long been a cornerstone of the area. Those ties are further deepened through lived experience. Robert M. Campbell, a graduate of Emmaus High School, represents a connection that spans generations, while Eric A. Harakal’s involvement with Emmaus Main Street Partners reflects an ongoing commitment to preserving the vitality of the borough’s downtown. In Emmaus, where community life is both visible and deeply rooted, Gross McGinley is not simply present; it is part of the story.

Wine, art & wellness: a natural combination J O E L R I T T E R A N D M A RY R E S H E TA R ’ S Unwine Vineyards is built around their shared passion for craftsmanship, community, and creative expression. Their intimate tasting room in SouthSide Bethlehem welcomes guests to peruse original art, browse handmade gifts, and unwind with a glass (or two) of their traditionally made wines. Joel’s journey as a winemaker began at his family’s vineyard near the New York Finger Lakes, where he learned smallbatch production and developed a deepseated appreciation for the craft. For him, winemaking is an art unto itself: a way to slow down, pay attention, and create something that brings people together. Unwine’s guests can enjoy a curated tasting experience featuring a selection of their best reds, whites, rosés, and sweet wines. A lifelong artist, Mary’s artworks imbue calm and wonder into the space. Her paintings line the walls and echo elements of earth and nature. She uses a combination of resin, paint, botanical inlays, minerals, and other media to infuse the natural with the abstract. Unwine is a small island in a sea of bustle where special moments between neighbors are created and remembered. Those who visit will quickly discover it’s about more than just wine. It’s about taking a restorative break from the pace of everyday life, meeting new people, and reconnecting with oneself.

Finding art around every corner T H E S O U T H S I D E A RT S D I S T R I C T ( S S A D ) just unveiled its latest community enhancement project, the ARTstop, an interactive map and guide designed to encourage visitors to explore Bethlehem’s arts and cultural attractions. Led by the SouthSide Arts District’s Design Committee, the project transformed a decommissioned LANTA bus stop into a creative wayfinding solution that celebrates the neighborhood’s creative identity while connecting visitors with its creative sector. Located at 3 East Fourth Street, ARTstop occupies one of the SouthSide Arts District’s busiest pedestrian intersections, just steps from the nationally recognized music venue Godfrey Daniels and several popular restaurants. Easton-based artist Danny Finocchio, known for his signature illustrative and playful artistic style, was commissioned to create the installation’s custom artwork. A ribbon cutting was held on July 30 followed by a casual luncheon at the recently opened UNO Taqueria, just steps away.

WHILE MANY PEOPLE THINK taking apart intricate heirloom pieces is unacceptable, Susan of Susan Bella Jewelry feels it’s a larger disservice to leave these sentimental pieces unworn. The best way to honor the loved ones who gifted these pieces is by enjoying them! When Sara (pictured in the leopard skirt!) reached out to Susan, she wanted to transform her great-grandmother’s pieces into an everyday style that suited her. Through Susan’s expert vision and artistry, she designed a contemporary ring that Sara loved and fit her personality. about it, only to learn it was already under contract. A week or two later, the new owners reached out after visiting the trailer and asked if they’d considered a permanent location.
When Melinda and her husband first talked about Roasties, they imagined a coffee trailer they could run together on weekends. After Melinda left her fintech career, they decided to give it a shot. They went into it without knowing exactly where it would lead, opening the trailer Monday through Friday before trying their first Saturday about a month in. The response was immediate, and the weekend quickly became the heart of the business.
Inspired by coffee shops she loved in Philadelphia and Atlanta, Melinda transformed the former house near Macungie Memorial Park into a bright café with an indoor-outdoor feel. But the space was always about more than coffee.
“We wanted to build something that was an exciting destination for people to come to,” Melinda said. “People were traveling on the weekends from all over the Valley to come.” When the trailer became too small to sustain through the winter, the next step seemed to find them. Melinda and her husband had driven past a building in Macungie and called
“We needed a third space,” Melinda said. “I love seeing couples sitting at Roasties, and you can tell they’re meeting for the first time.” From families and dogs to friends and first dates, the space has become a place for people to connect. Today, Roasties hosts book clubs, craft events, comedy nights, and countless everyday conversations. Its regulars have followed the business from its trailer days, helping create the community Melinda envisioned. “We did not expect it to happen this way, but we’re really glad it did,” she said. Community Comes to Life at EverTrue Luther Crest Pub E V E RY A F T E R N O O N , the Steel Valley Pub at EverTrue Luther Crest comes alive with conversation. Some residents stop in for dinner or happy hour, while others come simply because they know they’ll find familiar faces waiting to welcome them. “It feels like walking into ‘Cheers,’” says resident Bill Cameron, who has called EverTrue Luther Crest home for nearly 12 years. “The bartender starts making my drink before I even get to my seat.” For Bill, the pub makes it easy to meet people—and friendships happen naturally. That sense of connection was exactly what residents envisioned when the pub was created as part of EverTrue Luther Crest’s award-winning dining renovation. Alongside Vine & Fig, Chromium Grille, and Common Grounds, it gives residents another place to gather without leaving campus.
Wednesday evenings are especially lively. Resident Linda Kirner said the Ladies Group and Men’s Group both make the pub their weekly meeting place. “The Men’s Group brings papers and does homework ahead of time, and they have some very lively discussions,” said Linda. “The women talk about what’s going on in our lives. We laugh a lot.” From conversations about current events to plenty of laughter and themed food and drink specials, the Steel Valley Pub has become more than a place to eat. Giving Back: Danny’s Ride S O M E T I M E S , H O P E B E G I N S with something as simple as a ride. If someone needed a ride, they could count on Danny Teichman. Whether helping a friend or a stranger, giving someone a ride was simply part of who he was. Having experienced the challenges of recovery himself, Danny understood how something as simple as reliable transportation could make all the difference. After his death in 2016, his mother, Nancy Knoebel, established Danny’s Ride to carry that spirit of compassion forward by removing one of recovery’s greatest barriers: transportation. Today, Danny’s Ride provides transportation to outpatient treatment, 12-step meetings, job interviews, recovery housing, and other essential services for individuals living with substance use disorder. What began as one family’s way of honoring Danny’s legacy has grown into a nonprofit serving
communities across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and North Carolina. Working alongside treatment providers, employers, and community organizations, Danny’s Ride helps strengthen existing recovery networks by ensuring reliable transportation is never the reason someone misses an opportunity to heal, rebuild stability, or move toward independence. Now in its sixth year, the organization has provided more than 100,000 rides—each one representing more than a trip, but a chance to keep moving forward. Danny’s legacy continues in every mile traveled, every barrier removed, and every life changed. Learn more, support the mission, or find out how to request a ride at dannysride.org.
