Lehigh Valley WELCOME TO THE WINTER EDITION O F F I G —a cheerful celebration of the Lehigh Valley’s small business community and impactful non-profits who bring joy and meaning to our holiday gatherings and a smile to our faces.

A note from Fig

This winter season marks eight years of spreading the love-local message through Fig. When our team sat down to dream up this issue, we thought about capturing the beauty found all around us in this historically rich community. For our annual Holiday Shop Local Guide, we set out to highlight our unique neighborhood retail shops where you can find one-of-a-kind gifts to delight friends and family. On several crisp, fall evenings our front cover and inside fashion spreads were photographed under an illuminated harvest moon. Our crew traveled to iconic spots in the Lehigh Valley, capturing the exquisite nightlife and extraordinary architecture for which it is widely recognized. The evening-lit Steel Stacks served as the perfect backdrop to showcase our community—honoring the past and present while looking toward the future.

In the spirit of giving, you’ll also find our Fig Giving Guide, where we feature the important non-profits in our area. It’s a great way to get involved and connected with the needs of others to give back this holiday season as well as all throughout the year. We encourage you to find your passion, connect with one (or several), and work alongside your neighbors to make good things happen. As we come together with friends and family this holiday season, we encourage everyone to shop and give locally—knowing that small choices will make the season truly and authentically sparkle. Through all the change around us, Fig’s mission and commitment to the Lehigh Valley and our small business community within remains strong. So let’s celebrate—boldly, hopefully, joyfully— gifting generously and giving back meaningfully to the place we get to call home. Cheers, Kate Hughes & the Fig Team Be a part of the mission. Giving Back | Making a difference in the lives of others

Giving Back: Leigh Ehrlich L O C A L FA S H I O N I S TA L E I G H E H R L I C H spends her days working in her luxuriously decorated home office, which she designed around a clear desk so she can always “see her shoes.” Unlike most people, she still dresses up to work from home every day, using the opportunity to experiment with her outfits, applying and flexing her own office fashion rules. When she’s not working her day job as the CFO for Hospital Operations at Lehigh Valley Health Network, she spends time dreaming up ways of giving back to her community, especially through one of her passions—fashion. Over the past year and a half, like all of us, Leigh became very aware of the struggle small shops were facing in the Lehigh Valley, and she wanted to find a way to specifically help local female-owned clothing shops. She decided if people weren’t going out for fashion, she’d bring fashion to them. After recruiting a small group of friends, family, and neighbors to participate as both models and audience members alike, she opened up her backyard and threw an impromptu fashion show featuring clothing and designs from two of her favorite local shops—AM Luxe and Lara Bly Designs. What resulted was something quite remarkable. People connected once again, safely and very fashionably, and everyone involved was more than thrilled with how it turned out.

“Everyone was dressed up, smiling and really, truly, happy,” Leigh said. With the first show being such a hit, Leigh has plans to continue this fashion show every year, expanding it to help more of her neighbors showcase their merchandise. Growing the show undoubtedly means more details and plans to work out from her gorgeous office, but Leigh is up for the challenge. She hopes the new annual event will continue to improve and bring together this community she loves. Leigh said “We all just need to work together, and we can do it with confidence and style”...and that’s exactly what she did.

I R E L A N D&SCOT L A N D Right here at home or across the ocean—let Neville be your guide! A F E W Y E A R S B A C K , Neville Gardner, proprietor of Donegal Square and McCarthy’s Red Stag Pub, took part in the American Cancer Society’s “Real Men Wear Pink” campaign. This experience inspired Neville to create a cancer awareness tartan, adding a unique Celtic twist to products supporting cancer research.

Once the tartan was developed, Donegal Square enlisted its customers to name the tartan. The name “Hope for Life” was chosen with the hope that someday cancer research will uncover a cure. Handcrafted in Scotland of 100% wool, these one-ofa-kind tartan items are available in hats, caps, ties, scarves, scrunchies, shawls, stoles, waistcoats, and kilts. A generous portion of “Hope for Life” proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Working closely with a weaver in Scotland, the tartan was designed for the six vibrant colors to have significance. Pink represents Breast Cancer, light blue for Prostate Cancer, lime green for Lymphoma, lavender for All Cancers, white for Lung Cancer, and Purple to honor Caregivers. Ever wanted to take a Celtic tour? Now you can! Book your trip here with guide Neville Gardner: donegalsquare.com/travels

GEORGE TORRELLA 3 Jazz musician and provider of jobs to 40+ musicians a year Keeping live jazz alive in the Lehigh Valley!

A LONGTIM E

love affair with Jazz

G T 3 - J A Z Z S TA N D A R D S After arriving in the Valley from NYC in 2002, George Torrella immediately began working at farmers markets and wherever he could sit-in. “I was 15 when my brother brought the ‘Getz/Gilberto’ album home. I wore it out imagining what it would be like to play jazz in a club. At that time the Beatles were leading the British Invasion and Elvis was taking a back seat to it all. Rock and Roll was reimagining itself as Civil Rights, Vietnam, the birth control pill, and the first video game were shaping our youth...But I was in love and Jazz was it! I decided to focus on Live Jazz and to play ‘Standards’—songs that have been recorded by Jazz greats over the years. Timeless tunes forever identified with The Great American Songbook and serve as reminders of our multicultural roots. I’ve been fortunate over the years to have had the help and guidance of so many wonderful musicians.” 38

484.866.1748

torrellavision@gmail.com

Today, George performs 100+ times each year, working with more than 40 fabulous local musicians in many of the Valley’s restaurants, hotels, and clubs and working weddings, festivals, and private events. George has been particularly blessed through his association with The Bookstore Speakeasy, an awardwinning Jazz venue in South Bethlehem. It is themed as an authentic roaring 20s speakeasy, serving classic cocktails and savory small plates. “The Bookstore provided me with a stage to showcase some of the area’s finest Jazz musicians. I’ve been able to vary ensembles including occasional vocalists and instrumentation ranging from piano, guitar, bass, drums, trombone, trumpet, saxophone, clarinet, and percussion. I invite you to come to the Speakeasy and enjoy an authentic Jazz experience.”

AFTER NEARLY 10 YEARS AND COUNTLESS FILMS, FIFO (Fade In/Fade Out) still may be one of the best kept secrets in the Lehigh Valley...except to filmmakers. From the start, FIFO’s ongoing mission has been to grow, cultivate, and support filmmaking here in the Lehigh Valley, using a simple business concept that attracts revenue to the area while also creating jobs and careers.

The Founders

FIFO founders Bill Hartin, writer, director, and filmmaker, and Gene Connelly, actor and producer, knew from the start that money and talent would be their biggest challenges in establishing their non-profit filmmaking venture. But now that ample talent has surfaced, along with an impressive number of short and feature-length films to its credit, FIFO’s chief ongoing challenge is funding, as more filmmakers seek help for projects from its nearly 300 members.

Judith Adele Agentis Charitable Foundation  |  jaacf.org G O I N G B E YO N D From its founding in 2013 until the COVID-19 lockdown, the Judith Adele Agentis Charitable Foundation (JAACF) delivered nearly 20,000 delicious meals to individuals spending precious last moments with a loved one at St. Luke’s Hospice House in Bethlehem.

Bob Agentis, Founder and Chairman of JAACF

“We were comforted to know we were not invisible as we grieved the imminent loss of our mother,” recalls Carol, a hospice guest. A lunch delivered by JAACF was her father’s first meal in four days. He was reluctant to leave his wife’s bedside. It’s a common situation that Bob Agentis, founder and chairman of JAACF, knows well—when he lost his wife Judy of 47 years to pancreatic cancer and the only option for food was a single vending machine. Currently, there is one palliative care physician nationwide for 1,300 people diagnosed with a lifethreatening illness, and one for every 20,000 patients with a severe chronic illness. With an aging population and an increasing number of patients with life-limiting illnesses or chronic conditions, current palliative needs are not fully met. Therefore in early 2020, in partnership with St. Luke’s University Health Network, JAACF founded the Judith Adele Agentis Palliative Care Scholarship Fund. To date, 15 nurses have received the scholarship for palliative and hospice care certifications. In addition, the scholarship program will be expanded to include the Oncology and ICU departments.

Fun ways to support JAACF Scholarship Fund:

A Fabulously Fashionable Fundraiser at Lara Bly Designs to benefit Judith Agentis Palliative Care Education Scholarship Fund on Wednesday, December 8, 6:30 to 9:30pm, complete with fine wine tasting and delicious appetizers. JAACF was awarded the Heart of Hospice Award by the Pennsylvania Hospice Network and is also recognized as a Shining Star by St. Luke’s University Health Network. Authentic | Leading the way through innovation and example

Fig Authentic: Manal Omar F O R 2 5 Y E A R S , Manal Omar has dedicated herself to humanitarian causes and conflict resolution, including work as a frontline civilian peace builder in war zones from Iraq to Nigeria to Afghanistan. Manal was named among “Top 500 World’s Most Influential Arabs” by Arabia Business Power in 2011 and 2012. She was recognized among the “500 Most Influential Muslims in the World” by Georgetown University and the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre in 2009. In 2007, Islamic Magazine named Manal one of the 10 young visionaries shaping Islam in America, and more recently George Mason University named her among 50 Exemplars for their 50 year anniversary. Manal is a member of the Truman National Security Fellowship, an inaugural fellow for Foreign Policy Interrrupted, connected to the Sex Coach University community, and an Ambassador for Millions of Conversations. Creator and founder of #LetLoveIn campaign through her Across Red Lines foundation, Manal dedicates her life’s work to women finding their authenticity and aliveness while not losing connection to their faith. In her Ted Talk, “Women at the negotiating table—the missing piece in peacebuilding,” Manal focuses on her belief that the peacebuilding community needs to change its approach to conflict resolution by inviting women, with their full sexuality intact, to take a seat at the negotiating table, where currently less that 10% of negotiators are women.

Manal’s memoir, “Barefoot in Bagdad,” is a riveting story of hope and despair, of elation and longing—her words take the reader to the front lines of a different kind of battle, where the unsung freedom fighters are strong, vibrant, and female.
