Discovering

fall's spirit

A note from Fig

Fifteen years ago, I sat in my USC graphic design class with our capstone project assignment. What was it? To create a magazine from scratch. I had to do it all— the typesetting, copywriting, photography, and even the printing and binding. Was it perfect? Far from it. Was I proud of it? Yes, because it was about topics close to my heart. This Studio Art project planted the seed of what I wanted to do as a career.

Now, years later, we are a decade in on our 40th issue of Fig, and it’s made possible by beautiful Columbia businesses and my much more talented teammates. Fig isn’t a magazine. Fig is a compilation of dreams. You are flipping through pages of people who took a risk—who chose to

spend hundreds of hours honing their craft, whether music, architecture, interior design, dance, painting, acting, styling, cooking, teaching…and WE get to experience it.

I hope this issue inspires you to experience something new this fall. Whether it’s attending a live performance, taking a class, or visiting a different part of the city, step into something you’ve always been nervous to try.

Columbia is full of amazing people, arts and culture, and I hope this change of season brings renewed excitement.

A longstanding fixture of Columbia, the Main Street District is home to distinct architecture and rich history. While you stroll down one of South Carolina's most idyllic streets, it's no secret that respect for the past, passion for the present, and excitement for the future all play a hand in what is arguably the most bustling cultural district in town.

When you think of Columbia's former history as a busy textile economy, many historic mill buildings still stand before you here in the shadows of the State House. The Vista's cobblestone streets and iconic structures of old and new mix with tourists and locals alike to create a thriving city-center.

One of Columbia's best views is found while gazing upon the glowing street lights of the North Main corridor. What is affectionately coined the "NoMa" District, major revitalization projects are underway amidst quaint historic neighborhoods, local businesses, and more for the ultimate urban-living landscape.

We would be remiss to omit one of Columbia's most quintessential neighborhoods: the Rosewood neighborhood. From an old church turned gorgeous mixed-use building to quirky urban gardens, and the iconic Williams-Brice Stadium, Rosewood strikes a balance of progressive development choices and down home comfort.

The University of South Carolina put Columbia on the map back in 1801 and continues to lead the way for innovative research and higher learning today. Walking the charming Horseshoe is a step back in time, while LEED-certified buildings now lead the way for sustainable architecture and energy usage in the modern age.

Lovingly referred to as Columbia's "original village neighborhood," Five Points is a bustling recreational district with over a century of homegrown history. Although charming landmarks still come to mind, a new tech hub is ushering in an arts and innovation era in the heart of the Midlands.

Authentic Morihiko Nakahara

Morihiko Nakahara doesn't remember when or how he first learned to read music. It could've been in kindergarten, as music class was a required subject in his native city of Kagoshima Perfecture, Japan. It could've been at home where a piano stood, although no one in the family really played. By the time he was in middle school, he was sharing Mozart cassette tapes with fellow students. He chose the clarinet as his primary instrument and was struck by the captivating power of the school's band director. The opportunity to lead his fellow bandmates through a piece of music on his own sealed Morihiko's fate for wanting to pursue a life of music, with hopes to one day become a conductor.

Fast forward years later, with many accolades and world travels under his belt, Morihiko has held the position of Music Director and Conductor of the South Carolina Philharmonic since 2008. Aside from the technical elements of the role, Morihiko remarks that you

need not only a bird's eye view of the orchestra as a whole, but a personal connection as well. "It's really about the people. It's an essential part of what we do. There could be up to ninety people on a stage and they're all individual human beings with different needs and backgrounds. It's very human-based work," he says. Between the conductor and the orchestra, and the orchestra to the audience, there is a symbiotic relationship in a shared live music experience.

For Morihiko, the creative pursuit never really ends. In his free time, he likes to sit in on other orchestras while they rehearse like a fly on the wall, simply because the process fascinates him. Although his passion for music extends far beyond a typical forty-hour work week, he believes in the importance of prioritizing a work-life balance, too. "It's important. The key for me is being able to switch gears. If I really need to focus on a project, I can do that, but it's also important to be able to

spend time with friends and family and live your life, too," Morihiko explains. Perhaps, sparking creativity through a disciplinary approach is the secret to lifelong fulfillment within our realms of passion.

As another season for the South Carolina Philharmonic approaches, Morihiko is excited for what is to come. With the return of beloved events like Beethoven and Blue Jeans and a family-friendly “Halloween at Hogwarts” program with Halloween costumes worn throughout the audience and on stage, Morihiko reminds the community that "Music is for everyone." From “A Work of Heart,” a new sensory program for listeners with special needs, to selections that include more female composers, to casual brewery pop-up concerts—Morihiko and the rest of the South Carolina Philharmonic are determined to redefine what classical music looks like for the modern listener, inviting the community to take part.

Something is changing in Columbia. Known as an entrepreneur support organization, or 'ESO' for short, this new development located near the former White Mule music venue shows the growing dedication to the Midlands' startup community that was previously non-existent.

With The Boyd Foundation's generous donation of one million dollars and the combined visions of local volunteers passionate about making Cola a startup friendly place, GrowCo will focus on providing resources for high-growth, high-tech entrepreneurs throughout their journeys, with a key emphasis on early-stage founders. "We have a lot of existing startups to be proud of in Columbia. With its history and proximity to local universities like USC and Benedict, GrowCo's impact will transform the Five Points neighborhood into an innovation and arts district," says Caroline Crowder, the Executive Director of GrowCo. Students are equipped with skills to reflect the Creator and serve their communities through music, theater, and visual arts. Last year, the Arts Academy launched an exceptional private music lessons program for piano, guitar, voice, drums, orchestral strings, and more, with acting and visual arts being added this fall. For God, for others, and for fun, the young artists of Ben Lippen School embody the Fine Arts Department motto: "Better Together."

THE ART OF BEING DEVINE

Although Devine Street reigns supreme as one of Columbia's finest shopping districts, this lovely corridor is also dotted with vibrant works of art. Ija Monet's expansive mural outside of Azalea Coffee Bar is an ode to flowers, and Gardener's Outpost bursts with blooms as plant-lovers gaze upon works by Ernest Lee (A.K.A. The Chicken Man) and Southern Cypress Tattoo. Barre3 sports murals both inside and out, with inside mural by Christine Crawford and exterior mural by owner Lauren Truslow. The ultimate guide to game days in Cola

As the autumn breeze ushers in the football season, Columbia transforms into a vibrant hub of sporting passion and community camaraderie. Whether you’re a visitor or a Soda Citizen, game days in Columbia are a quintessential Southern tradition. No matter which team you cheer on this fall, everyone here loves to gather 'round the tailgate table and celebrate with the snacks and sips that make this city come alive. As scents of barbecue and sounds of cheer fill the air, check out the many local spots that fuel this community's unique game day spirit.

BARS & BREWERIES

Our bars and breweries offer the finest craft beer and cocktails. If you don't have a ticket for the game, no worries; these local spots are the favorites of all sports fans.

River Rat Brewery In the shadows of WilliamsBrice Stadium, River Rat Brewery offers a range of refreshing ales and lagers. Their "Astronaut Sauce" is a favorite among fans, boasting a game-winning balance of hops and citrus flavors.

Steel Hands Brewing A short drive from the stadium, Steel Hands Brewing is a hot spot for post-game celebrations. Enjoy their signature "Coffee Lager" or "Tropical IPA" while reliving the game's highlights.

SOUTHERN-STYLE EATS

The capital city is famous not only for its heat but for its fan-favorite eateries, too. Although a variety of cuisines can be found here, there's nothing like a spread of Southern comforts for game day in the South.

Home Team BBQ Located in Columbia's charming Five Points, this local spot is a hub to families, friends, college students, and most importantly, football fans. A host of southern delicacies to choose from and TVs to watch the game make dining on game day a no-brainer.

Doc's BBQ Just a few minutes' walk from Willy B, you'll find this popular eatery for those who love tender, fall-off-the-bone meats. Find paintings by Ernest Lee, AKA "The Chicken Man," here as you fill your plate with all the fixins to fuel your game day.

TAILGATE TRADITIONS

Tailgating is the ultimate pre-game ritual, bringing together friends, family and even rivals. The capital city is a hotbed for tailgating spots, but none compare to the vibrant energy surrounding Williams-Brice Stadium. These game day traditions add an extra layer of excitement and electricity in the air. The Gamecock Walk is a must-see, where fans line the streets to cheer on the mighty Gamecocks as they make their way to the stadium. The "Cockaboose Railroad" is another longstanding tradition, where fans gather in refurbished train cars near the stadium for an unforgettable and luxurious tailgating experience.

With each issue this year, Fig has been privileged to partner with Sistercare. This non-profit empowers survivors of domestic violence in Richland, Fairfield, Lexington, Newberry, and Kershaw counties by providing emergency shelter and community-based services. From teen outreach programs to legal representation, court advocacy, housing, individual and group counseling, and more, Sistercare has served nearly 12,000 women and children in the past three years alone.

One of Sistercare's yearly highlights is Songbird Café, a musical fundraiser inspired by Nashville's famed Bluebird Café, that brings national talent to Columbia for an evening of intimate song in storyteller fashion. With the help of Musical Director, Ricky Wright, Sistercare has welcomed acts like Darius Rucker, Edwin McCain, Sister Hazel and more for 20 years. "What's so unique is that the event is not a huge concert. We like the singer-songwriter feel and keep it small intentionally," says Leah Wicevic, Executive Director of Sistercare. With limited seating and a fantastic spread catered by longtime friends at Southern Way Catering, Songbird Café typically sells out before it goes on sale to the public. "We encourage people and organizations to become sponsors. That's how we make the biggest impact and raise the most funds for the domestic violence survivors and children we serve," Leah continues.

Although the music might be the initial draw, their mission takes center stage every October during Domestic Violence Awareness Month as survivors share stories of strength.

"42% of South Carolina women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. It doesn't discriminate," Leah states. The harrowing realities of domestic violence and a night of beautiful music might seem like an unlikely pair, but Leah affirms that, through awareness, education, and fundraising, "we are able to make our community a safer and healthier place." With every guitar strum, Songbird Café breaks the silence through sound—because no one deserves to live in fear.

Sistercare allows those in dire need of help the opportunity to understand that they are not alone. I always look forward to getting the call to perform.

The 21st annual Songbird Café will take place on October 26th at the USC Alumni Center. To attend, contact Leah at lwicevic@sistercare.com for sponsorship information.
