With experience in the headwear industry for many years we noticed a need for a range of headwear that was relatively inexpensive at a lower price point, but still of a high quality. Developing a range of sun hats that could be purchased as an impulse buy or bought by those with a limited range of expendable income meant designing a range that would not only be appealing to a wider group of consumers, but still offer superior sun protection with a choice in designs and materials.

How Our Sun Hats Are Made

How Our Sun Hats Are Made

Our sun hats are created using various materials: natural fibres are crocheted or braided, ribbon is machine stitched, while other materials are machine knitted.

The designs are then “blocked” using a hat block. A hat block is a metal mould that is heated to specific temperatures to create unique characteristics and behaviours in a material, as well as to create the actual shape of the hat style like a Bucket, Fedora or Trilby.

Our hats are machine stitched by hand by talented machinists.

Sun Hat Architecture

1. Crown

The crown is the area at the top of the hat that denotes the hat shape, e.g. Fedora and offers sun protection

3. Brim

The sun protective part of the hat that provides the most shade. Under 5 cm = Not UPF Rated

2. Trim / Band

The detailed area around the base of the crown. Varies from a cotton band to detailed rope, a belt or a patterned scarf

1. Internal Adjustment

Internal adjustments provide the perfect fit and help keep the hat securely on the head, even in windy conditions!

Simply tie to the correct size:

• Pull drawstring in gently

• Tie a single bow

• Fit onto your head

• Remove from your head and make a secure bow at the same size

2. Cotton Lining / Headband

All hats have a matching cotton headband for added comfort.

Some hats may have a cotton lining to ensure that it meets the UPF50+ rating requirements.

The South African sun taught us the importance of protecting yourself against the sun's harmful UV rays while enjoying time outdoors. We aim to share our sun protection expertise with you by offering you a wide range of fashionable sun hats, many of them with the highest grade of sun protection: UPF50+.

UV Certification & Endorsement

Our hats are tested in a laboratory using sophisticated equipment that measures the amount of UV light that passes through the material.

UPF50+ Rating

All hats that carry the UPF50+ swing tag and internal fabric label have been specially tested and verified as meeting strict UPF50+ requirements.

The UPF50+ label is globally recognized as the highest sun protective rating available. Visor peaks as well as short brim Trilbies that have a brim size of less than 5 cm are not UPF rated. They still provide shade for the eyes and nose & are sporty and fashionable.

SPF vs UPF – What is the Difference?

Both SPF (Sun Protection Factor) and UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) are standards used to measure sun protection. SPF is the standard used to measure the effectiveness of sunscreens and UPF is the standard created specifically for sun protective fabrics.

Ultraviolet Radiation (UVR)

The “holes” in the fabric will make a difference depending on whether the fabric absorbs or scatters the UV rays.

It is difficult to tell how protective clothing is by looking at it or holding it up to the light, because the human eye responds to visible radiation, and not to UVR.

The transmission through fabrics in the visible range is often higher than in the UVR range. Laboratory UPF testing simulates a worst case situation, where the UVR is incident at right angles to the fabric and transmission is therefore maximal.

UPF50+ means that the hat will block out up to 98 % of the sun’s harmful UV rays and is considered to offer “Excellent” sun protection.

Find Your Size

How To Measure Your Head

• You can measure your head size with a soft tape measure or piece of ribbon/string

• Place the ribbon, string or tape around your head just above your ears, about mid forehead

• You should hold it firmly, but not too tight!

• It should feel as comfortable as you would want it to feel when you wear the hat

• Mark the soft tape measure with a pencil, and you’ll see which size is best for you. Or tie a little knot in the ribbon or string and measure the length in centimetres

Basic Size Guidelines

Most women’s hats are a 57 58 cm size (M/L). Some women however prefer a 59 - 60 cm size, depending on head size or hair style. Men’s hats are generally a 59 60 cm size (L/XL); however some men wear a 57 58 cm size, it all depends on your preference and how the hat feels on your head, some like a loose fit some prefer a tighter fit.

If your measurement falls between a size, round it up to the next largest size so that you’re guaranteed of a comfortable fit that you can just adjust if you need to.

Cleaning Instructions

How to Clean Your Sun Hat

There is a tag on each hat that has recommended cleaning instructions to ensure your hat will last even longer, and keep its stylish shape. Hand washable styles are also crush-resistant, where spot washable styles should be handled with care. We never advise machine washing!

Hand Washable

Rinse hat under cold water to remove sweat or wrinkles. Hand wash with mild soapy water, rinse. Air dry in the shade or dry with a hairdryer on a cool setting.

Spot Clean

Use a wet wipe, or soft damp cloth to clean the dirty area. Air dry in the shade or dry with a hairdryer on a cool setting. Do not submerge in water.

Ideal for Travelling!

You can pack and flatten most of our hats into your suitcase or backpack and they simply bounce back on arrival. Refer to the fabric features and care chart for detailed information on specific fabric types.

Packing Methods

Hand washable & Crush-resistant: To pack these styles, push the crown of the hat straight down to flatten out the hat. Lay flat in your suitcase so that it won't get folded or creased. We don’t recommend folding your hat. Gently steam your hat to remove any creases or wrinkles. Cotton and Polyester sun hats are crush-resistant.

Spot clean only for Natural Fibres: Handle with care when packing, these hats are not crushable. Although their natural materials are durable, spot cleaning and handling with care ensures they last even longer and keep their stylish shape. To pack these styles, pack your clothes around the edges of your case leaving the middle of your case free for your hat. Place your hat upside down inside your case, and put scarves and other soft accessories inside the hat.

This method is ideal for crush resistant & hand washable styles made from Polyester, Cotton etc.

Spot clean. Handle with care

This method is best used for Natural Fibre styles which are packed for an extended period of time

The tight knit of the Polyester materials create a soft, supple hat that is easy to wear and can be washed by hand in cold water. The material is also colourfast.

Reeds and grasses are renewably harvested and dyed before being woven into a braid. This braid is then stitched together to create the hat.

Threads of durable Polyester fibre are woven together to form a braid, and then stitched together to create the hat. Crush resistant, breathable and ideal for travel.

Natural Fibre & Paper Straw

Sun hats designed using natural materials are durable, long lasting and lightweight to wear. The natural fibre materials are sustainably sourced from around the globe, ensuring the trees and plants remain unharmed and can regrow before the next renewable harvest. Materials are dyed and made into fibres which are woven together to form a braid. This braid is then stitched together to make the hat.
