Greetings FiftyNorth Friends, I'm feeling the FiftyNorth love! It was my honor and privilege to convene my first Annual Meeting with you—a special thanks to those who attended on April 23— great to see you there. And thanks to the Management Team for pulling it all together.

I am so glad to be here, sharing the adventure of life with you.

I don't know about you, but Bruce Springsteen is one of my go-tos for spring energy. Does it get any better than Thunder Road with the windows rolled down?

"Maybe we aint that young anymore," but, "show a little faith, there's magic in the night."

ART IS THE BEST THERAPY Gary Melquist was a survivor, he had a diagnosis of manic depression. He lived with the trials of misdiagnosis and harmful treatments. But his journey through mental illness provided him with a positive outlook on life.

Gary lived in Minneapolis all of his life. He traveled often to Northfield to visit his sister, Paula Case. "Due to my recent diagnosis of cancer I told my sister I won't be at FiftyNorth’s art exhibit in May. Paula reassured me my art display will advocate for others struggling through the highs and lows of manic depression." Gary's age at the time of his death was 79 (DOD 3-9-2026).

The pictures in his display represent the many places he visited. His art was a reminder to himself and others of the potential that lies within everyone; especially those with a mental disorder.

When you see a bright color sunset that is Gary sending a splash of color to us all. Thank You to FiftyNorth for honoring Mental Health Awareness Month.

SUBMITTED BY PAULA CASE Gary’s exhibit will be on display from May 5th through May 29th. The reception is May 27th from 5:00 to 7:00. The evening of the reception Gary’s family would like attendees to take a painting home.

Coming this Fall: IN THE GALLERY ECHOES & SHADOWS 2026 TIMELINE AND GUIDELINES In honor of our 50th Anniversary, the theme for this year’s collaboration is “A Season of Celebration”

JOAN KOESTER’S COLLECTION CONNECTION FOR THE MONTH OF MAY VAN BRIGGLE POTTERY was founded in Colorado Springs, Colorado, by Artus Van Briggle in 1901. Known for its distinctive Arts and Crafts style, the pottery often featured nature-inspired motifs and a unique matte glaze, typically in shades of blue, green, and rose. The company aimed to create beautiful, affordable art pottery for the masses.

Please create your poems and artwork based on that theme The Echoes & Shadows event offers a glimpse into the dynamic exchange between different art forms. This year the poetry will be submitted first.

Artists will choose the poem that inspires them to create their artwork.

TIMELINE • The poems must be emailed to michelle.loken@fiftynorth.org no later than June 1st.

• Online viewing and selection of the poems will begin June 3rd.

• https://fiftynorth.org/activities/art-gallery/ • Artwork submission will be August 24th – 28th. Drop off your artwork in Michelle’s office.

• Gallery Exhibit begins September 1st and ends October 30th.

• Artist Reception will be on September 17th beginning at 4:00. The Poetry Reading will follow promptly at 5:00.

GUIDELINES • POETRY submissions must include – first and last names, phone number, email and type of poem you are submitting.

• Poems should not be more than one page long.

• Poems must be 14-point font size (no smaller) and use Arial font. It must be submitted in a Word Document.

• Poets can submit one poem.

• ARTWORK must be inspired by the poem the artist chooses.

• Artwork must be framed and/or have a hook that works with our hanging system.

• Artwork submissions must include – first and last names, phone number, email, medium and sale price. Artist will receive 65% of a sale.

• Artist should provide an Artist Statement when submitting their artwork. Artist statements must not exceed one page and must be 14-point font size and use Arial font and be submitted in a Word Document.

• Art pieces can be created using any medium.

• Artists can submit one piece of artwork.

• Do not submit artwork and poetry as a pair. The purpose of the exhibit is to create a collaboration.

• There will not be an entry fee.

• If you are not able to attend the reading, please find someone to read your poem on your behalf.

SURVEY FiftyNorth Community Programs & Day Trip Survey WE'RE HIRING!!!

Popcorn Wagon Volunteer Coordinator!

The FiftyNorth Popcorn Wagon is a beloved community treasure, and a living piece of Northfield history. The Popcorn Wagon Volunteer Coordinator is a fun seasonal role--May-October— and pays $18 per hour, with a maximum of 20 hours per week. You will recruit, train and schedule Popcorn Wagon volunteers, and ensure that shifts are staffed with friendly, community-oriented volunteers. Your goal is to coordinate, staff, supply and work the FiftyNorth Popcorn Wagon for a successful season of community engagement and joy.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Data—track volunteer info and hours in a Google sheets Staffing—recruit, hire and schedule volunteers for all shifts and special events Training—train all volunteers to Wagon service Calendar—maintain a master Google volunteer calendar Coordinate—work with community stakeholders to book the Wagon

We want to make sure our upcoming classes and day trip offerings are exactly what you're looking for. We don't want to guess what you want, we want to know, so we're asking you-the experts!

A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO KATE & CARLA At FiftyNorth, we take great pride in offering more than 60 phenomenal fitness classes each week to the Northfield community. These classes are led by some of the most dedicated and skilled instructors and trainers in the industry— professionals who adapt workouts with care, motivate with heart, and make every participant feel welcome. They are truly the backbone of the fitness and wellness experience at FiftyNorth, and we are honored to have them as part of our family.

Two longtime instructors, Kate Stuart and Carla Johnson, will be stepping away from their regular teaching roles. While we are saddened to see them go, we are also excited for the new chapters ahead. Carla will continue to serve on the FiftyNorth Board of Directors and the YMCA task force, and Kate will be retiring from weekly teaching but plans to return for session‑based classes in the future.

Please join me in thanking both Kate and Carla for the remarkable work they have done and the lasting impact they have made at FiftyNorth. Their dedication, energy, and care have enriched our community in countless ways.

FITNESS GROUP update WALKING GROUP Mondays, beginning May 4 9:00-10:00am

Location: Carleton Arboretum No walks on May 25 - Memorial Day, or September 7 - Labor Day Group Leader: Marie Frederickson Capacity: 25 Cost: Free

Experience the outdoors while increasing your strength. Enjoy a walk in the woods and the company of others. The path is quite flat and provides beauty without too much challenge.

We will meet in the West Gym parking lot at the entrance to Carleton’s lower Arb, off Highway 19 just beyond the football stadium.

Things to bring/wear: • Sturdy walking shoes/boots, the trails are not paved. They are mostly flat, but are dirt so can be somewhat uneven.

• Sunscreen, bug/tick spray, water • Optional: hat, walking poles • Dress in layers or have them available in your car. Minnesota spring weather continues to be unpredictable!

Weather cancelations: If it is raining heavily a half hour before start time, I will cancel the walk. If it is “looking like rain” or lightly sprinkling I will be there in rain gear. Call the FiftyNorth desk to confirm 664-3700.

A Nordic Walking 101 class is a fantastic introduction to an engaging and effective way to enhance your walking routine.

You'll learn the fundamental techniques of using specialized poles to propel yourself forward, transforming a regular walk into a full-body workout. This class covers proper pole handling, stride technique, posture, and how to adapt your approach for varying terrains. Expect to discover how Nordic walking can improve your cardiovascular health, engage your core and upper body muscles, reduce impact on your joints, and boost your overall fitness while enjoying the outdoors.

It's a fun, social, and accessible activity for people of all fitness levels! Nordic Walking sticks will be available for participants to use during the class. If you have your own Nordic walking sticks you are welcome to bring them too.

The first session we’ll fashion the bowls and beads. The following session we’ll paint and decorate the bowls. These fun little pieces can be used for storing small treasures. It is appropriate training for Certified Nurse Assistants, healthcare workers, childcare workers, teachers, instructors, and volunteers.

DOUG SCHOLZCARLSON: GREAT RIVER FESTIVAL PRESENTATION Monday, June 1 10:30am-12:00pm Capacity: 30 Cost: Free and open the public Space: Room 103 What can go wrong when magic takes place in the forest outside of Athens in a Shakespeare comedy?

Doug will maybe give us the answer as he again comes to FiftyNorth to present early insight into this year’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. For over 20 years he has given us insight into the Great River Shakespeare Festival’s productions. As the Artistic Director of GRSF, he gives us a look at what goes into putting on a production. In its 23rd season, is a resident company of 9 professional actors from all over the country that come together for a summer of Shakespeare in Winona. FiftyNorth has sponsored a trip every year, except during the COVID outbreak.

Doug grew up in Northfield, getting his start at the Northfield Arts Guild under Myrna Johnson.

He has acted and directed at most Twin City theaters, and Doug Scholz-Carlson across the country. Midsummer will be directed by Doug ScholzCarlson, the artistic director of the Great River Shakespeare Festival, where he has directed many productions and played more than 20 roles.

Doug was the first intimacy director at the Metropolitan Opera (New York) where he has worked on more than 14 productions. In addition to the Met, he has worked on productions for Minnesota Opera, San Diego Opera, and San Antonio Opera.

FiftyNorth wants to recognize and thank the Tax-Aide volunteers that work diligently to provide tax preparation services free of charge to our members and other folks in the community.

The AARP Tax-Aides are the unsung heroes of tax season. The impact they have is truly massive, often helping those who might otherwise struggle to navigate the complexities of the tax code.

Here is why their work is so vital: Financial Lifeline: For many seniors and low-to-moderate-income families, the cost of a professional tax preparer can be a significant burden. These volunteers save taxpayers hundreds of dollars in fees.

Ensuring Accuracy: They help people claim important credits they might miss, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Child Tax Credit (CTC), putting money directly back into the pockets of those who need it most.

Peace of Mind: Tax season is notoriously stressful. Having a patient, trained volunteer walk someone through the process provides immense emotional relief.

Commitment to Learning: These volunteers undergo rigorous training and testing every single year to stay certified with the IRS. It’s a serious time commitment for the sake of helping their community.

Fun Fact: Most Tax-Aide volunteers are often retired professionals from all walks of life who simply want to give back.

These volunteers along with the FiftyNorth receptionists work together to make this important service happen.

Maurice and Maralyn make an odd couple. He’s a loner, awkward and obsessive; she’s charismatic and ambitious. But they share a horror of wasting their lives. But in June 1972, Maurice and Maralyn set sail.

For nearly a year all went well, until deep in the Pacific, a breaching whale knocked a hole in their boat and it sank beneath the waves.
