REPORT

Marlais Brand, Executive Director's Report

Greetings FiftyNorth Community,

 Halloween 2013 - Fitness Director, Craig Swenson teaching Core Class.

Wow! What a busy time here at FiftyNorth. First, we are very pleased to announce that the YMCA Board of Directors has approved the Plan of Merger for FiftyNorth and the Northfield Area Family YMCA! So, now that the FiftyNorth board and membership, and the YMCA board have voted, we have not only a green light, but a strong majority mandate to move full steam ahead into the future together. This is an historic moment for FiftyNorth and the YMCA, and a milestone for the greater Northfield community. Two strong community-serving nonprofits have decided to join forces to promote thriving and wellbeing for our citizens. We know we’ll be better together, and we’re ready to team up to serve people through every phase of life. We appreciate everyone who engaged and supported this process– this was truly a team effort. Thanks especially to the FiftyNorth Management Team, the Front Desk Team, and the Board who all listened very hard, shared information, and invited lots and lots of conversation. And we are very grateful for all 648 members who showed up to vote here on Sept 24– no surprise, but you far exceeded the 25 person quorum we needed! 648 FiftyNorth members voted, and 553 or 85% of you approved our board’s recommendation to merge. That’s an impressive level of engagement. Thank you!

What’s Next? Well, our lawyers will work with us to execute the legal merge by January 1, 2027. And we’ll be working hard to get ready for that legal merge, with lots of behind-thescenes operational integration. But what does it mean for you, our current members?

FiftyNorth Report | OCTOBER 2026

Well, here are a few things to keep in mind:

The Next Big Thing

Remember

Do you love to work out? Are you all about learning? Does volunteering really float your boat?

 We aren’t going anywhere until we build a new home

for FiftyNorth– no Clampett-style hitting the road and moving over to the YMCA with all our earthly belongings

 You won’t see changes to programming, unless they

are ones we want

 You won’t see kids in the pool, unless it’s Sunday, or

we’re hosting an inter-generational swim

 You won’t see younger folks in our programming,

unless we plan an inter-generational class or invite them to join us

Great Merger Stuff Coming Up Membership Appreciation at the Y– last week of October–all current FiftyNorth members can check out the YMCA facility and programming for free 2 Sites For the Price of 1– starting in 2027, one membership will give you access to both the current YMCA and FiftyNorth sites– details will roll out soon 2027 Membership Registration– October-December TBD– we’ll provide hands-on support to help you get registered for the new year– we’ll post dates for this soon YMCA Cleaning & Maintenance– starting in 2027, the Y team will start providing cleaning and maintenance support (if you’ve seen the Y facility, you know they have high standards for this stuff ) Planning– we’re likely to launch strategic planning for FiftyNorth’s future home and general YMCA expansion in early 2027 In Other News Our big 50th birthday bash with Will Healy & the Over and Back Band was a smashing success. We had a full house, and special guest Pat Donohue brought the house down with some especially hot licks on his guitar. Our own “Goodwill Ambassador,” Helen Dillon, in all her glittering glory, stole the show– check out the pictures in the lobby. Thank you to Kay Brown, our 50th Chair, the 50th volunteer crew, Will, the band, the Mayor, and our amazing Patty and Michelle for making the night simply splendid. XOXO!

Well, then we need you to help us BEAT THE BUDGET. This month we’re launching one wild, crazy and fun in-house competition to get FiftyNorth over the 2026 fundraising finish line. We’ve got to raise at least 120K more to hit our 250K budget goal for 2026. Help us keep the coffee brewing, and the popcorn popping. Pitch in to keep classes open and staff paid. We need you to help us meet and beat our budget. Every dollar counts. No donation is too small. We’re assembling competition “Teams” to BEAT THE BUDGET… drumroll, please… Fitness Fanatics! Learning Lunatics & Art Nuts! Volunteer Victors! Got what it takes to be a “Captain” for one of these teams? We’re desperately seeking goofy, silly, loud and proud captains and mascots for each wacky team. If you’re interested, please email tracy.fossum@fiftynorth.org ASAP. All the fun starts Wednesday, October 21 at 1:00pm in room 103 (yes, treats will be served). A Fond Farewell We just said good-bye to the incomparable Elaine Meyers, Membership and Operations Manager, who served FiftyNorth for nearly 11 years. No fewer than 8 “Elaines” made an appearance at her retirement party, which left Elaine, and others, speechless, in, we think, a good way. We already miss Elaine, and we’ve pretty much talked to her every day since she retired– so much for loving detachment! Elaine will also continue to serve FiftyNorth on our new FiftyNorth Advisory Committee starting in 2027. We love you, Elaine! (see p21) Membership Support Thanks to Brenda and Kay– your friends from the front desk–for stepping in to provide membership support for the rest of the year. They will provide in-person membership service from 10-12 every day, and you can also reach out for online support: membership@ fiftynorth.org A New Face Rachel Vantries, the YMCA’s Mission Advancement Director, is providing FiftyNorth with operational support through the end of the year. Rachel will be working in the FiftyNorth offices most afternoons– stop in and say, Hi. She’s very nice :) I’ll be away from the office Oct 5-9, visiting my folks. Still working on convincing them to move out here. Let me know if you have any persuasion tips. Happy Autumn to One and All! Here’s to FiftyNorth’s bright future!

Marlais

Hi - I’m Sheila Hetzel , I'm leading a 4th grade Community School (after school) club called "Cursive Club." Can you read this note? I learned cursive when I was in ___ grade. We had to practice every day." or something nice and friendly like that. We would not write back, as we don't know how to yet, but it would be cool to see a lot of different styles and to show them how beautiful it is to get a note written like that. EVENTS

LITTLE FISH COMEDY PERFORMANCE Friday, November 6 7:00-8:00pm Capacity: 90 Cost: $15 Space: Room 103 / 105 Registration deadline: November 4 Join us for an evening of comedy and brain teasers as the little Fish lmprov Troupe entertains us. Audience participation adds to the hilarity. Read below the history of this clever and witty group. Little Fish Comedy started as an accident in February of 2023 during rehearsals of a play called A Play that Goes Wrong! Buddy Ricker has been doing improv comedy for over 20 years, most of that done with a local improv troupe called Spontaneous Productions.

AUTHOR, ART AND CRAFT FAIR Saturday, November 21 9:00-1:00pm Space: Rooms 103 / 105 Support Local Authors & Artisans Under One Roof Mark your calendars! We’re bringing together talented local craftspeople, artists, and authors for a special day of shopping, reading, and community. Whether you're hunting for custom home decor, gifts, unique jewelry, or signed books across every genre, you'll find it here. Bring a friend, meet the creators behind the work, and find something truly original. We can't wait to see you there!

ART, CRAFT, VENDOR & BOOK FAIR VENDOR SIGNUP Saturday, November 21 9:00am-1:00pm Capacity: 36 tables Space: Room 103 & 105 Cost: $20 per table/space Registration deadline: November 2

Due to this fact and the fact that the director of the play, Steve Searl, had been in Spontaneous Productions, Steve asked Buddy to lead the cast of the show in improv warmups at the beginning of each rehearsal.

We're excited to announce our upcoming Art, Craft, Vendor, and Author Book Fair on Saturday, November 22 from 9am to 1pm at FiftyNorth, and we're currently looking for amazing vendors!

Buddy did that and the cast loved it. In April of 2023, as the play was winding down, it came up that maybe they could keep doing improv. So, Buddy sent out emails and scheduled and taught improv rehearsals. And the rest is history.

If you create unique crafts, are an author and sell your books, or showcase your art, we'd love to have you. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your work. Secure your spot! We're now accepting vendor applications. Don't miss out on this chance to reach new customers! Tables will be provided by FiftyNorth. If you are interested in renting a space, register online or in person.

Since then, a few members have joined and some have dropped out but the creative spark that makes Little Fish Comedy shine is still there. The current cast is: Buddy Ricker, Chad Allen, Andy Artley, Sam Temple, Kevin Chapman, Kiara Artley, Bryan Reed, Alex Ayers, Glynnis Lessing, Nat Wilson, Andie Moore, Ben Manthey

Set up will be the day before from 2 to 4pm, and at 7am the morning of the sale Details about the event, setup, take down along with a waiver & release of liability form will be emailed to you after registration.

 If you are a food vendor you must be licensed.  Please specify if you need electricity (this space is limited) FiftyNorth will promote the event in the newsletter, social media, website, eblasts and internal flyers.

Sandra Nyvall’s Owl Collection Did you know owls live in every continent except Antarctica? A group of owls is called a parliament. I guess that is what I have in my “way too many” collection which I started in 1962. My assortment includes puzzles, playing and greeting cards, figurines, paintings, clothing, jewelry, purses, books, key chains, and much more. ...AND IT’S BACK!

Carla is back with Sound Bath & Meditations SOUND BATH AND MEDITATIONS Mondays 6:30 to 7:30 pm Starting October 12th Come as you are and use this opportunity to let the soothing vibrations from singing bowl instruments help you relax deeply.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In 2024, there were an estimated 2.4 million women diagnosed with breast cancer and 694,000 deaths globally. Breast cancer occurs in every country of the world in women at any age after puberty but with increasing rates in later life. Regular exercise has been proven to improve quality of life, reduce treatment side effects, and lowers the risk of recurrence for people navigating a breast cancer diagnosis.

Key Benefits of Fitness Reduced Side Effects: Physical activity helps manage fatigue, mobility loss, and sleep disturbances common during and after treatment. Lowered Risk: Staying active can reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence and improve long-term survival rates. Better Well-being: Exercise boosts mood, enhances overall stamina, and decreases anxiety or depression. Recommended Guidelines Aerobic Activity: Aim for 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity cardio (such as brisk walking, swimming, or cycling) each week. Strength Training: Include resistance or weight training exercises at least two days a week to maintain muscle mass and bone health. Pacing Yourself: Start slowly—such as a short daily walk—and adjust your intensity based on your energy levels and treatment cycle.

A Sound Bath is a healing practice whereby the practitioner guides you in a relaxed, reclining position – often supported in savasana (corpse pose) – and allows the healing sounds of the instruments to “bathe” you in vibration. You will hear the sounds, but more importantly you will feel the vibrations. As you relax more and more through this 45-minute session, you begin to release physical, mental and emotional tensions until you sink into a calm state and simply receive the vibrations. Sound baths can have a variety of benefits including: improved sleep, decreased anxiety and fatigue, balanced nervous system, lowered blood pressure, increased focus and deep relaxation. Just as a typical bath involves a person immersing themselves in water, a sound bath immerses you in sound, so you feel enveloped in it. Wear comfortable clothing; bring your own yoga mat if you like. Instructor: Carla Johnson Capacity: 20 Cost: $10 nonmbr, $8 mbr, $0 fitness plus/platinum Space: Fitness Studio *Carla Johnson is a certified Practitioner of Sound Therapies, receiving certification through Meditate: School of Mindfulness and Sound. She also leads yoga classes at FiftyNorth and serves on the Board of Directors and chairs the Membership Committee. FITNESS NEWS continued p6

KNIT A COZY COWL - ALL SKILL LEVELS ARE WELCOME Wednesdays, October 7, 14 10:00-12:00pm Instructor: Diane Pearsall

Capacity: 4 minimum, 10 maximum In the event we do not meet minimum capacity we may have to cancel this class Cost: $70 nonmember, $60 member, $20 Platinum Space: Room 102 Registration deadline: September 30

Winter is coming sooner than you think. Will you be warm enough? Does your neck ache when it’s cold out? Knit a cozy, soft, snuggly cowl to keep you warm! This class is for beginners, those wanting to renew their skills, and experienced knitters looking for a quick project. There will be homework! You’ll knit the cowl in the round with 2 colors of Cielo Yarn, a blend of Alpaca and Merino that is unbelievably soft against your skin. There are 3 pattern variations to choose from according to your skill level. Even though the cowl may look complicated, this class is appropriate for real beginners. FROM THRIFTED TO HAUNTED: HALLOWEEN ALTERED ART Friday, October 23 1:00-3:30pm Instructor: Allison Albright Capacity: 4 minimum, 10 maximum

Cost: $45 nonmember, $28 member, $10 platinum *The cost of the thrifted artwork is on your own. Space: Used A Bit Shoppe 624 Water St. S Northfield, MN 55057 Registration deadline: October 16

In the event we do not meet minimum capacity we may have to cancel this class

Give an old painting a playful new life! Bring a thrifted painting from FiftyNorth’s Used-aBit Shoppe to class and transform the painting into one-of-a-kind Halloween artwork by painting charming ghosts, bats, tombstones, and more right into the existing scene. Imagine friendly spirits wandering through an autumn landscape, peeking from behind a tree, floating beside an old cottage, or gathering mysteriously in the distance. You’ll learn simple painting techniques for adding ghosts and other subtle Halloween touches while working with the colors, composition, and character of the original artwork. No painting experience is necessary. This class is all about creativity, imagination, and fun! Each participant will leave with a delightfully spooky piece of upcycled art to enjoy throughout the Halloween season. Before Class: Find Your Painting! Before coming to class, visit FiftyNorth’s Used-a-Bit Shoppe and purchase a thrifted painting or framed art print to transform. Please purchase your painting in advance and bring it with you to class. When purchasing your painting at the Used-a-Bit Shoppe, please inform the Used-a-Bit Shoppe attendant that you are registered for this class to receive a 50% discount on your chosen thrifted painting! The attendant will have a list of class registrants. When choosing your artwork, look for a scene with room to add a little Halloween mischief. Landscapes, country scenes, cottages, forests, farms, streets, gardens, lakes and other scenic artwork work especially well. Look for open spaces, pathways, doorways, trees, windows or other places where a little ghost might naturally appear. Choose something inexpensive that you’re comfortable painting over. You do not need to find a valuable or original work of art! Older framed prints and decorative artwork can be perfect for this project. If your artwork is behind glass, please choose a piece that can be easily removed from its frame so that we can paint directly on the artwork rather than on the glass. A small- to medium-sized piece will be easiest to complete during class. Painting supplies and materials for altering your artwork will be provided. Bring your chosen treasure to class and we’ll give it a delightfully spooky second life!

A NECESSARY WRITING TASK AN OBITUARY Monday, Thursday, October 26 & 29 9:00-11:00am

Instructor: Carol Rutz Capacity: 12 maximum Space: Room 102 Cost: $40 nonmember, $32 member, $0 Platinum

When a death is reported in the newspaper, accompanied by an obituary for the deceased, how does that obituary happen? In many cases, stressed family members scramble to meet a deadline set by a funeral home or other site for a service, hoping to capture the essence of the deceased person as well as important information about memorials. Much of the anguish associated with this task can be eliminated by advance planning. This two-session course will give participants a chance to determine the key elements of an obituary and prepare a draft. We will meet on a Monday morning from 9-11 to map out the necessary features of an obituary and resume on Thursday at the same time to hear from a local funeral director on some of the pre-service and burial details and to work in pairs on provisional drafts. The goal: preparation of a reasonable draft for someone, perhaps yourself, as well as appreciating the details of this written form.

TRIP - TOWN & AROUND: GUIDED TOUR OF THE FLATEN ART MUSEUM AT ST OLAF COLLEGE Monday, October 19 10:30-11:30am

Address: 1520 St Olaf Ave Transportation is on your own. Free parking in the Buntrock parking lot. Trip Leader: Michelle Brant Capacity: 12 In the event we do not meet minimum capacity we may have to cancel this trip. Cost: Free Registration deadline: October 14 Featured Artists - Michon Weeks & Brenda Berkman For Michon Weeks, painting is a contemplative practice akin to meditation and prayer. Working in egg tempera, oil, and acrylic, Weeks paints the quiet terrain of everyday life: yards, tree lines, and utility poles. But these paintings do not describe the ordinary elements of the Minnesota landscape. They are the artist’s method for slow, sustained presence—and an invitation to the viewer to stay with something long enough for meaning to surface. Marking a quarter of a century since the September 11, 2001 attacks, the Flaten Art Museum highlights a print series from its collection: Thirty-Six Views of One World Trade Center by St. Olaf alumna Brenda Berkman ’73. Berkman — the sole named class plaintiff who opened the New York City Fire Department to women firefighters in 1982 — was a fire officer and first responder at the World Trade Center on 9/11, witnessing the destruction and loss that reverberated across the country.

TRIP - CHASKA CURLING CENTER Thursday, November 12 2:45-8:00pm

The Chaska Curling Club is housed in the Chaska Event Center. A large multipurpose facility south west of the Twin Cities. They boast of six “sheets” of ice and 1,000 members. Curling year round. Upon arrival we will be greeted by Clay Orvik, the Curling and Event Center Supervisor. Clay will give us a brief tour of the facility which should include walking around the sheets of ice on a carpeted wooden walkway. We will not be on the actual ice. It’ll be chilly and cold enough to keep the ice frozen. About 40-46 degrees. Clay will give us an overview of what Curling is. The rules, history, rocks, brooms, sliding, teams (rinks), goal of the game and how to score. Once the tour and tutorial are finished, we should be able to grab a bite to eat from the newly remodeled Copperfield’s restaurant. You can choose to eat your meal in the restaurant overlooking the ice, or you may take your meal and “sit at the glass” on benches overlooking the games from inside the warm room area adjacent to the restaurant tables. All very close to each other. This was would be easiest to enjoy a game while you eat. It’s your choice. The cost of the meal is on your own.

A huge heartfelt thank you to Ingrid Freeman for volunteering. She is always quick to say yes to any volunteer opportunity we ask of her. We know we can count on her to show up and do a great job. Ingrid’s father instilled in her the importance of volunteering at a young age and she has been hooked on volunteering ever since. You could say volunteerism is literally in her blood. Many years ago, my father gave me a talk about volunteering. He said you didn’t need money to volunteer because it’s a donation of time. Soon after, he took me to my first blood donation. I was sixteen. Since then there have been many opportunities to volunteer, most recently at 50 North. It’s such a loving community of people whom I have the pleasure of serving as a fitness instructor, but beyond that I fill in as a closing buddy, read with school children, stage manage performances, perform with the band, serve on various committees, and promote and celebrate 50 North and all it has to offer whenever I can! — Ingrid

Dear FiftyNorth Community, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who came to my farewell celebration Friday, September 25, or reached out with well wishes over these past few weeks. Your kind words, hugs, and warm messages mean more to me than I can properly express. A special thank you to my work family: the management team for giving me one last unforgettable memory—showing up in gray wigs, purple tops, and fake nails was an absolute riot! Also, a special thanks to my receptionist staff who have been exceptional to work with. It’s been a pleasure! It was a day full of mixed emotions. I am excited to step into this next chapter of my life, but saying goodbye to such a meaningful job—and to a community that has truly felt like family—is certainly bittersweet. That said, you haven’t seen the last of me just yet! I’ll be staying on through the end of the year in a contract capacity to help with special projects. Beyond that, I’m excited to continue serving our community through my work on the FiftyNorth Advisory Board at the Y. Thank you all for your incredible support over the years. I am so grateful for the time we’ve shared, and I look forward to seeing you around! Warmly, Elaine Meyers

Celebrating 50 years!

More than 2000 vibrant, active members have found belonging, purpose and wellbeing here in our FiftyNorth family. We connect. We care. And we support one another.
