FIFTYNORTH at the
novemBER 2026 REPORT Marlais Brand, Executive Director's Report
INSIDE THE REPORT
Greetings FiftyNorth friends, Well, if you were very lucky, you got to meet your “team captains” for our BEAT THE BUDGET competition last Wednesday at our standing-roomonly Community Update Meeting.
Director’s Message. . . . . . . . . . . . 1 - 3 COMMUNITY PROGRAMS: FiftyNorth Gallery. . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4
I just had to call in the cavalry to help us raise 130K by the end of 2026, and my SOS was answered in a big way. First, our fearless Fitness Fanatics–Craig and Helen–showed up to “pump us up,” and lend some muscle to the competition. Next a Learning Lunatic ambled in. It was none other than the original intellectual loon, Dr Albert Einstein. The good doctor gave us a memorable lesson in simple fundraising physics: Energy = Money + Community (E= MC). The Dr’s accent was also spot on, and his facial hair was quite realistic. Then, drumroll please… the original Art Nut, Marie, made a grand entrance in full legume regalia, replete with paint palette and brushes. She then warbled an original tune, and cracked a few jokes to help us raise more than peanuts. Can’t remember the last time I saw a peanut do stand up. Last, but not least, 2 Volunteer Victors came to our rescue. Patty and Jim swept in, superhero-style, red and gold capes aflame, to lead us in a chant of, “Victory! Victory! Victory!” If you want to get in on the fun (ahem, “mayhem”), then, by all means, give to your favorite “team” right here in the FiftyNorth lobby. Whether you are a Fitness Fanatic, an Art Nut, Learning Lunatic, or Volunteer Victor, with your help, victory WILL be ours. YOU can help us BEAT THE BUDGET! You can make FiftyNorth operations possible right here, and right now. Thank you for your membership, and your support.

FiftyNorth will no longer collect myriad additional fees for social amenities and activities like coffee, cards, or clubs. Instead, your Membership or Social Club fee will cover these activities. The Social Club option does not include fitness facilities, pool, community programs, events or trips. Choose either a Membership, or the Social Club– you don’t need both. Opt for a Membership if you want access to everything. Payment You’ll have a couple options for paying fees: Out of pocket– you can pay monthly through automatic bank account or credit card drafts, or annually in advance. Insurance reimbursement– The Y works with several insurance plans that offer reimbursements through NIHCA Rewards. Additionally, the Y offers insurance-based memberships through Renew/Active/OnePass and Silver & Fit. We’ll help you figure out if you are eligible for a reimbursement program.

LITTLE FISH COMEDY PERFORMANCE Friday, November 6 7:00-8:00pm Capacity: 90 Cost: $15 Space: Room 103 / 105 Registration deadline: November 4 Join us for an evening of comedy and brain teasers as the little Fish lmprov Troupe entertains us. Audience participation adds to the hilarity. Read below the history of this clever and witty group. Little Fish Comedy started as an accident in February of 2023 during rehearsals of a play called A Play that Goes Wrong! Buddy Ricker has been doing improv comedy for over 20 years, most of that done with a local improv troupe called Spontaneous Productions. Due to this fact and the fact that the director of the play, Steve Searl, had been in Spontaneous Productions, Steve asked Buddy to lead the cast of the show in improv warmups at the beginning of each rehearsal. Buddy did that and the cast loved it. In April of 2023, as the play was winding down, it came up that maybe they could keep doing improv. So, Buddy sent out emails and scheduled and taught improv rehearsals. And the rest is history. Since then, a few members have joined and some have dropped out but the creative spark that makes Little Fish Comedy shine is still there. The current cast is: Buddy Ricker, Chad Allen, Andy Artley, Sam Temple, Kevin Chapman, Kiara Artley, Bryan Reed, Alex Ayers, Glynnis Lessing, Nat Wilson, Andie Moore, Ben Manthey

Judy Saye-Willis is our Volunteer of the month for November. She is the one that carefully measures the artwork for gallery show installations. Her keen eye sees just where to hang each piece so the flow of the show is pleasing to the viewers. Judy is a textile artist. She uses natural pigments and dyes made from locally grown materials to create beautiful silk scarves. She has taught Indigo dying classes at FiftyNorth in the past. We are grateful to Judy for sharing her time and talents with FiftyNorth. She knocks it out of the park with her yard stick in hand. She’s a gem!

NOVEMBER 2026 THEO OF GOLDEN by Allen Levi One spring morning, a stranger named Theo arrives in the small Southern city of Golden. He doesn’t explain much about where he came from or why he’s there—but when he visits the local coffeehouse, where pencil portraits of the people of Golden hang on the walls, he begins purchasing them, one at a time, and giving each portrait to the person depicted. In exchange, he asks only for the person’s story. And so portrait by portrait, person by person, secrets are revealed, regrets are shared, and ordinary lives are profoundly altered. A story of giving and receiving, of seeing and being seen, Theo of Golden is an unforgettable novel about the power of generosity, the importance of connection, and the quiet miracles that happen when we choose kindness and wonder. GALLERY OPENING RECEPTION
Fifty Faces of FiftyNorth cc linstrotH
The 50 Faces of FiftyNorth How long Have you been a member of fiftynortH? About 20 years, though it could easily be more! wHat are your favorite tHings to do at fifty nortH? I love being on Michelle’s events committee. Across the community, I hold a lot of leadership roles with several different tasks, so with Michelle’s committee, it’s a wonderful change of pace to just roll up my sleeves and do things like set tables, wash dishes, and be around a fantastic group of people. I also make sure to do something athletic every single day. When the weather is nice, I play pickleball outside, but usually five to seven days a week, I take strength and yoga classes from home through FiftyNorth’s Zoom offerings. Having access to those online fitness classes is fantastic. wHy do you love fiftynortH? I love FiftyNorth for what it offers to our broader community. I don’t spend hours in the building every day myself, but preserving what this place provides is essential. Through my work with Age-Friendly Northfield, I believe four elements are vital for older adults: socialization, physical activity, collaboration with other non-profits, and free access. When I walk into the lobby and see people who might otherwise live alone having conversations, finding friends, and staying active, I see how truly necessary FiftyNorth is. It creates a supportive space where people can connect on both good days and deeply difficult days. wHat “life advice” or wisdom would you like to sHare? Smile as often as you can and give people genuine eye contact. As a former teacher, I saw how easily students could feel invisible. You never know if you are the only person who will truly acknowledge someone that day, and that simple act of recognition enriches both of your lives. wHo is a personal inspiration to you & wHy does tHis person inspire you? Eleanor Roosevelt and Marlais. I deeply admire leaders who, when placed in tough or adversarial positions, continue to treat everyone around them with absolute respect. Eleanor Roosevelt modeled that throughout her life, and I see that same grace and dignity in Marlais’s leadership here. That principle was also the cornerstone of my career as a classroom teacher: you build a team, you foster mutual respect, and you lead with kindness. favorite Quote/motto? “If given the choice between being right and being kind, choose being kind.”

The 50 Faces of FiftyNorth
The reception is in the Alcove Gallery in the Lobby
How long Have you been a member of fiftynortH? I joined back in 2011, so it’s been about 15 years now. wHat are your favorite tHings to do at fifty nortH? I love attending special events, dinners, and dances, as well as listening to guest speakers and going to plays and musical performances. I also take the weekly meditation class, which I absolutely love. Volunteering is another huge part of what I do here. I facilitate a history class every Friday morning, serve on the events committee, and help with the patio garden committee. I also step in wherever an extra pair of hands is needed, whether that’s serving drinks at an art gallery reception or helping with the upcoming Will Healy concert. wHy do you love fiftynortH? It gives me the opportunity to connect with people in my age bracket and build strong, lasting friendships that I wouldn’t have otherwise. We really are all in the same boat, sailing together. As a lifelong Northfield resident, I already know a lot of people in town, but without FiftyNorth, I simply wouldn’t see them as often. Coming here keeps those bonds alive. wHat “life advice” or wisdom would you like to sHare? Always be humble and kind. It’s not about yourself—it’s about the person you’re speaking with. Take the time to truly listen to others, because everyone has a story, a concern, or a joy they want to share. wHo is a personal inspiration to you & wHy does tHis person inspire you? My mother. Being the youngest of eight children, I had a very special bond with her because I was still home with her after my older siblings were in school. She taught us that love and kindness aren’t just occasional acts, but a continuous way of life.
favorite Quote/motto? cHris poQue “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
The 50 Faces of FiftyNorth How long Have you been a member of fiftynortH? For around 7-8 years. wHat are your favorite tHings to do at fifty nortH? I’ve been playing mahjong for about three years now and really enjoy it. I’m also on the events committee, where I help plan, decorate, set up rooms, and serve refreshments at events. Beyond that, I love attending FiftyNorth concerts and taking fitness classes like Cardio Dance & Drumming and Silver Sneakers Balance. The organized day trips and group activities are always fun, too. I also participate in the Story Partners program through St. Olaf, which has connected me with so many wonderful young adults for truly fascinating conversations. wHy do you love fiftynortH? It offers such a wide variety of activities, and you meet so many fun, interesting people. It truly allows you to broaden your horizons and try things you never thought you would—like weaving on a loom or taking a flower arranging class, both of which I wouldn’t have had the chance to experience without FiftyNorth! wHat “life advice” or wisdom would you like to sHare? You should step outside of your comfort zone once in a while and try something new. FiftyNorth is a great place to do that, so break away from your usual routine. wHo is a personal inspiration to you & wHy does tHis person inspire you? My parents. They both lost their mothers at very young ages and were completely on their own with little to no money after high school. They inspired me through the values they instilled: be financially responsible, value your education, treat others with respect, and never feel entitled. They taught me to work hard for what I want and never expect handouts. My father was also a dedicated volunteer at his church and the VFW, which taught me that life isn’t just about yourself— and that deeply influenced my desire to give back and volunteer here at FiftyNorth.
FiftyNorth and its programs are made possible in part through support from the City of Northfield.
