We had a big crowd at The Old School Farm to Table for our July foodie night trip. Our group enjoyed a family-style meal and great company in a beautiful atmosphere. This month we’ll be heading to Emmy Squared in Green Hills. Stop in and sign up! We had an informative tour & presentation at the TBI Crime Lab. We got an inside look at what they do, their mission, and had the opportunity to ask lots of questions from their lab & admin professionals. We are excited to head back in the future! YOU’RE INVITED! Letter from the Office Assistant… I’m happy to sparkle like a glazed disco ball. Paloma Elsesser Last year’s FiftyForward J. L. Turner Dance was so much fun we decided to spend another evening dancing (and eating) the night away. This year we time travel back to the disco era with our fundraiser on Friday, October 4. We’re raising funds for the FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center, and it will be a night to remember. It was the summer of 1979, and disco was taking over the world. Everyone seemed to be doing the “Bump” and the “Hustle” as disco DJs played a smooth mix of music to keep you dancing all night long. Women would wear tight-fitting spandex or sheer flowing dresses that moved freely with the body. What should you wear to pay homage to the disco era? Whatever’s comfortable for you. You can go “all in” with a full costume that reflects the disco divas and gents in their leisure suits, or you can simply wear something sparkly and festive. A hint of glitter, a few sequins, and anything that shimmers under the light of a spinning disco ball will put you in the mood for a good time at our party. We’ll have a silent auction—and we’re already seeing a great array of donated items that will intrigue and delight. Monell’s will cater a sophisticated and delicious dinner. I also want to express my heartfelt appreciation for Nikki Plotts. I have truly been amazed at all the work she does, especially behind the scenes, helping the center function smoothly and effortlessly. She has consistently programmed creative events that appeal to a variety of people. I have learned so much from Nikki and benefitted from her kindness and patience. I will miss her bright beautiful spirit. I wish her the very best as she moves on to new adventures.

Letter from the Director… As we move into Fall, we look forward to our upcoming “An Evening at the Disco” fundraiser. I ask that all instructors and programs try to have a “Disco” theme in the month of September leading up to the Oct. 4th event. Bring out your bellbottoms, flowing dresses, sequin tops and join in on the fun. Help support the center by donating to the “Playlist” wall, buy a ticket to the event, donate a silent auction item or even dress up to promote the event. Many ways for all FiftyForward J. L. Turner members to help raise the $8000 to meet our set goal. It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Programming Director Nikki Plotts. Nikki’s has been with the organization for just at two years and has done an outstanding job with the program. She has weathered our director leaving, hiring of new staff and the ever-changing needs of the organization. I wish her the best of luck in her next adventure. My hopes that she will stop back by on occasion to help during our transition of finding a replacement. Best wishes Nikki from all the FiftyForward J. L. Turner staff and members. As always, I remind everyone to scan in at the MySeniorCenter station and encourage all 50+ YMCA member to do the same as numbers count!

It is hard to put into words how much you all mean to me, which makes it very difficult for me to announce that my time at FiftyForward has come to an end. The last (nearly) two years has helped me grow professionally as well as personally, and I have you all to thank for that. I have accepted another position with a different company that is also near and dear to my heart. As I take on those changes it will certainly be bittersweet. It has been a pleasure getting to know everyone on the many trips we’ve taken in the last few years. Some of my favorite moments also happened in the center at our many concerts, sitting and chatting in the lobby, stopping by the office, or on the van on the way to one of our trips. Having the opportunity to get to know you all and hear your stories will be something I never forget! I couldn’t have gotten through the highs and lows without all of your encouragement, kind words, and advice— especially my volunteers whom I love so dearly. I am terrible at goodbyes which is why I kept this announcement very low key, but as I move on to this next phase I will take those many words of encouragement, kind words, and love with me to the next stage of my life. I consider myself very fortunate to have been welcomed into this community with open arms. I wish I could put into words how appreciative of I am for all of you, but all I can say is thank you for allowing me to be part of this community. I really will miss you all.

Friday, September 13, 2019 from 9-10:30 a.m. – “Creation through Indian Eyes” – Dr. Fred Heifner, Antropology, Philosophy, and Religion Professor with Cumberland University, will examine Indian cosmological relation to creation, Dr. Heifner will discuss seven examples of creation myths including the Earth-Diver and other creation myths. Friday, September 20, 2019 from 9-10:30 a.m. – “History of Railroad Pocket Watches” – Carl Barton from Clarksville, a retired employee of AT&T, active member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC), and avid pocket watch collector will discuss the history of railroad pocket watches. Learn about the watches they used on the railroad from the years 1850 to 1893, about time zones, and other interesting history. For example, in 1891 the most destructive train wreck in American history happened at Kipton, Ohio because the engineer's watch had stopped for four minutes. Following this accident, the U.S. Government authorized Webb C. Ball to change the pocket watch to meet specific requirements to qualify as a railroad watch. Learn about these different requirements and who made the last railroad pocket watch. Friday, September 27, 2019 from 9-10:30 a.m. – “Tennessee History Day: Documentary Showcase” – Jennifer C. Core, Director, Membership and Programs and State Coordinator of Tennessee History Day with the Tennessee Historical Society. National History Day is a year-long education program for students in grades 6-12 that engages both educators and students to improve the teaching and learning of history by utilizing primary sources. Students conduct original research and present their findings as a documentary, exhibit, performance, website, or paper. The Tennessee Historical Society became the state affiliate of National History Day in the 2008-9 academic year. Since that time, student and educator participation across the state has more than doubled. Over 8,300 students across the state participate in National History Day. After competing in a cycle of contests, a delegation of 65 students were selected to represent Tennessee at the National History Day contest, held each June in College Park, Maryland. Award-winning documentaries will be showcased.

Friday Flicks Friday, September 27 12:30 p.m. in Zelle/West Popcorn & Drinks Provided Martha is an introverted woman who moves to a retirement community that has shuffleboard, golf, bowling and other activities. Hoping to be left alone, she meets Sheryl, a fun-loving neighbor who insists that they become best pals. After coming out of her shell, Martha and her new friend decide to form a cheerleading squad with their fellow residents. As the two women hold auditions, they soon learn that it's never too late to follow your dreams, even when the odds are stacked against you.

Do you know anyone interested in driving some of our monthly trips? No CDL license required, but there will be a background and driving check. All tickets and food will be paid for on any trip you drive. This is a great opportunity to see Nashville and try some new activities and new restaurants! If you know anyone or are interested yourself, stop by and see a staff member. Someone good with people with an outgoing personality is a plus! Do you know someone who is an advocate for FiftyForward and can take payments for trips and events? In addition to drivers, we also have ambassador time slots available. You will receive credit to the Center that can be used on any event or trip.
