The Turner Times

September 2017

On August 14th, our community lost a founding and prominent member, Charlotte Branstetter. Her children have set up a memorial fund in her honor, The Charlotte Branstetter Art Fund at the FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center. In respect to that, this month’s front page features art created by our members in August’s Art Class. The August project used acrylics to explore the Aboriginal styles currently on display at the Frist Center for the Arts. If you’d like to contribute to the Charlotte Branstetter Art, Fund please see a FiftyForward Staff Person or mail a check to 174 Rains Ave. Nashville, TN 37203.

The Turner Center will be closed on Monday, September 4th in observance of Labor Day. Please see the YMCA for a schedule of their classes.

We will also be closed on Friday, September 15th for a Staff Retreat. Connection Café: Enjoy the Turner Center Lobby at your leisure. Open daily from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Free coffee and tea.

Catch a Lift with Senior Ride Nashville Senior Ride Nashville is an affordable, assisted ride service that pairs a senior who needs a ride with a volunteer who can give one. This new non-profit is targeting a “soft” opening in September, and Bellevue is the first community to be served! Representatives from Senior Ride Nashville will visit our Center on Wednesday, September 13th for an information session. Invite your family, friends, and neighbors to come learn more about this new service and how you can sign-up as a rider or volunteer driver.

Attention All Runners & Walkers: This year the J.L. Turner Center is raising funds through the Viva La Diva 5k/10k that supports FiftyForward. All funds collected through registration fees by runners, walkers and teams, or from sponsors signed up through the J.L. Turner Center will be designated to specifically benefit our operations and programs. For more information, to sign up, or to have your business become a sponsor, please contact Derek Stogner at dstogner@fiftyforward.org.

Advisory Council: The FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center is forming a new advisory council, made up of members and community leaders, to help foster growth in the Center in three key areas: fundraising, marketing, and resources. If you’d like to be a part of a team looking to broaden the reach and scope of our Center, please see Derek Stogner or email him at dstogner@fiftyforward.org. An informational meeting will be held in late September.

Letter from the Director… I am happy that we are heading into the fall, as it is my favorite season of the year. It’s also a time when a lot of programming opportunities heat up, even as the temperatures fall, so be sure to check out all the great stuff we have going on in September. A couple of things I wanted to highlight this month are a few ways you can help support our incredible center. One is that the J.L. Turner Center is going to be involved closely with this year’s Viva La Diva 5k & 10k that benefits FiftyForward. We’re going to be looking to get runners (and walkers; the 5k can be walked), teams, and sponsors from our center and larger Bellevue community. The money raised from these participants will directly benefit the Turner center. So please see me if you are interested in participating in any way. Additionally, we are looking at developing a new Advisory Council to help support several aspects of the Center. If you’d like to get more involved with fundraising, sharing resources, or getting the word out about our services to the community at large, then this would be a great place for you to help us grow in these key areas. You can, again, see me if you are interested.

Warmest regards, Derek Stogner Director, FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center Letter from the Program Director… I can’t believe the summer months are coming to an end. August seemed to fly by! Thank you to everyone who has participated in our fun summer programs, but now it’s time to say goodbye to the heat and hello to the much more enjoyable fall weather. This month we’ll take advantage of the slightly cooler temperatures by spending some time outdoors. For September we will check out one of Bellevue’s hidden treasures by hiking along the Harpeth River Greenway. Then, get your feet wet and join us for a canoe trip down the Harpeth River. This will be a great opportunity to try something new and get a little adventurous. Starting in September, we will reintroduce our monthly Saturday trips. We’d love for you to join us this month at the Nashville Farmer’s Market. We’ll check out some of the harvests and see what new goodies the Nashville farmers have been cultivating this summer, and, of course, we’ll have lunch and dessert at one of the many different restaurants and stands located inside the market. We will also be starting our Lucky Lunches program in September. Once a month we will cater food to the Center from different restaurants in the area and then enjoy an afternoon of Bingo, food, community, and, of course, prizes. Join us this month for a chance to win great prizes and try some tasty lunch options from the newly opened Sprouts market. Along with all of this, we will have a great group of speakers coming to the Center. Be sure to check out Victory Over Crime’s presentation on the Criminal Justice System, then join us for the always popular TBI Crime Lab tour. We will also have another viewing and discussion on one of NPT’s Aging Matters Documentaries. Then, we are excited to welcome Justin Beasley, a 4th year Belmont Pharmacy Student, who will present on Prescription Medication & Falls Prevention. We have so many exciting trips and activities planned this month, and I can’t wait to spend more time with all of you. Once again, I just want to extend a big THANK YOU to everyone who has encouraged me in this transition into the Program Director position.

Kindly, Hannah Lee Program Director, FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center

BELLEVUE HISTORY & GENEALOGY GROUP For more information, contact Bob Allen at 615-218-4580 or bob@bellevuebob.com. Join us on Friday mornings at 9:00am for coffee and lectures about various historical topics. Friday, September 1st – NO MEETING – LABOR DAY HOLIDAY Friday, September 8th – “L&N Passenger Trains that Served Nashville Dating Back to 1921 & Subsequent Years” Lyle Key, Retired Regional Vice President of L&N and CSX Railroads will take us on a photojournal history of L&N passenger trains that is sure to bring back many memories and experiences of the yesteryears we enjoyed with our parents and grandparents. Friday, September 15th – “Woman-Power: A Brief Summary of the Contributions of American Women during the Civil War and the First World War” – Krista Castillo, Fort Negley Museum Coordinator & Site Manager. In 1861, seemingly overnight, female-led axillary organizations across the Union and Confederacy sprang up in support of the war effort. Less than 50 years after the close of the Civil War, American women again mobilized in the face of impending war. True to the spirit of the Progressive era, women challenged societal norms and gender barriers. By the Unites States’ entrance into the Great War, millions of women had entered the workforce for the first time. Friday, September 22nd – “Forward My Brave Boys: The Regimental History of the 11th Tennessee Infantry” – Gary Waddey, Nashville author, will discuss his new book about the 11th Tennessee regiment that was comprised of ten companies of men raised from Davidson, Dickson, Hickman, Humphreys, and Robertson counties in early 1861. The 11th Tennessee were among those Confederate troops who broke the Union defenses at Franklin, fighting in brutal hand-to-hand combat on the grounds of the Carter House. The book contains many first-hand accounts taken from unpublished diaries, letters, and journals, along with maps and many never-before published photographs of the soldiers. Gary Waddey will have books for sale at a discounted price of $25. Friday, September 29th – Speaker and Topic to be announced Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at 11:00 am – FIELD TRIP TO FORT NEGLEY – Krista Castillo, Museum Coordinator and Site Manager, will hop on our FiftyForward van and give us a one-hour tour of the Fort after we view a 20-minute orientation film. The FiftyForward van ride costs $6.00 and we will have lunch afterwards at your own expense. Van leaves promptly at 10:30am. Sign up with an Ambassador in the FiftyForward lobby.
