Letter from the Director… At the time of this writing, An Evening in Old Hollywood has yet to take place, but it is looking to be an amazing event. Be on the lookout for pictures from the event in next month's newsletter. I want to thank our Advisory Council, particularly fundraising chair Matt Creekmore and outreach committee chair Kathy Cleveland for all of their hard work on making this possible. Also thanks to the center staff, volunteers, and everyone who attended and invited others. Also a huge thanks to our sponsors, including Edward Jones Financial, as well as Monell's, Moore & Moore Garden Center, Tennessee Orthopedic Association, and Messer Construction. This month we have some really fun stuff planned. I hope everyone is able to attend the Rhythm Band Concert, which also serves as this year's Preview Party. Rise Tucker has been hard at work planning what is going to be our biggest show ever! Also, one of my favorite events of the year The Halloween Party and Chili Cookoff is here again, so get those chili recipes perfected, and start thinking about your costume now. Letter from the Program Director… Happy October! September has been a fun month so far with great trips & events. We are ready to head into fall with a busy October calendar! We will finally be heading back to the Symphony for their Curb Open Dress Rehearsals. For those of you who haven’t been yet— it is a chance to get an inside look at symphony rehearsals. We are so excited to get the opportunity to do this again this year. I’m also really looking forward to the Cheekwood Harvest Festival. There will be a ton of fall activities, flowers, pumpkins, scarecrows, and more. There is also the option to tour the mansion if you choose to do so. In addition to these we will have a fun Music For Seniors event, a day at Arrington Vineyards, and another trip to the Frist for a Food For Thought: We Shall Overcome: Civil Rights and the Nashville Press. I hope you are able to join us for at least one of our trips this month! We also have some exciting events and trips happening at the Center this month. Again this year we will be celebrating Halloween together with a Halloween potluck & chili cookoff! There will be tons to do including a costume contest, chili cookoff contest, and a chance to vote for your favorite painted pumpkin. If you want to enter our pumpkin painting contest, be sure to participate in our pumpkin painting on Monday, October 29th at 1:00pm for $5 (everything provided). As we gear up for Open Enrollment be sure to check out all of the events we have going on at the Center to help get you prepared. On October 24th our FiftyForward LAH Care Manager, Ron Henson, will be giving you an overview on Medicare, Open Enrollment and your options. United Healthcare will also be here on Tuesday, October 30th to give you more insight into options.

Friday, September 28, 2018 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am – "History of the Ensworth High School Campus" – Paul Clements, Author and Historian, will cover the history of the area where the High School sits today from the earliest period of human habitation, through the frontier period and the plantation era, and continue up into the present. Friday, October 5, 2018 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am – “On The Highway of Then and Now: Doing Nashville History at Sixth and Drexel” – Dr. Steven Hoskins, Professor of Church History at Trevecca Nazarene University, will reveal the restless historical landscape of Nashville that came together on a hot August day in 1990—Catholic Knights and Nuns, Commercial Giants, Homeless Citizens, and the city’s Power Brokers—to be entertained by the installation of a historical marker honoring an East Coast legend. Dr. Steven Hoskins will present a chronicle of Nashville’s past, all together in one place on one day, a story that proved a harbinger of the history we are living today. Friday, October 12, 2018 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am – “South Nashville" – Ralcon Wagner, Author and Historian, will show a PowerPoint presentation on his newest book, South Nashville, a pictorial history of the district from the 1860s through the 1970s. After the program, signed copies of his book will be available for purchase at $20.00. Friday, October 19, 2018 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am – "Resisting Massive Resistance: Tennessee Senators Gore and Kefauver Respond to the 'Southern Manifesto''" – Dr. Tara Mielnik, Assistant Professor of History at Cumberland University, will discuss the environment following the school desegregation decision of the Supreme Court in 1954 where many Southern Senators and Congressmen banded together in opposition to this decision, in a movement known as "Massive Resistance." Friday, October 26, 2018 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am – "The Sounds of Nashville: A Musical Timeline” – Dr. Don Cusic, Professor of Music at Belmont University and Playwright (Minnie Pearl: News from Grinders Switch), will give us a look at the musical history of Nashville from Davy Crockett to Taylor Swift.

Friday Flicks Adrift Friday, October 26th at 12:30pm Free Popcorn and Drinks Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp couldn't anticipate that they would be sailing directly into one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history. In the aftermath of the storm, Tami awakens to find Richard badly injured and their boat in ruins. With no hope of rescue, Tami must now find the strength and determination to save herself and the only man she has ever loved.

Program Spotlight
Book Club This member-facilitated monthly book club is one of the longest-standing favorites of the Turner Center. Join leader, Ann Sanford, the 4th Thursday of every month to discuss old favorites and great new reads. All book lovers will have a chance to share their thoughts and insights on the titles and suggest new reads. This is a great way to exercise your mind and meet friendly new faces. This month they will be reading The Center of Everything by Laura Moriarty.
Congratulations to our Turner Center Brain Brawlers trivia team. In August, they competed at the Senior Brain Games Regional competition and won 1st place! This qualified them for the semi-finals district competition, which will be taking place on Wednesday, September 26th. We are so proud of their accomplishment and want to extend a BIG thank you for representing the Turner Center so well.
Members Joe Edwards, Allen Dunkerly, and Hudson Clark were our 3 competitors with Gay Hutson as our alternate. Thank you all for all your hard work!
