Congratulations to our Turner Center Brain Brawlers trivia team. In September, they competed at the Senior Brain Games Regional competition and won 1st place! This qualified them for the semi-finals district competition, which took place on October 15th. In a nail-biter of a competition, they took second place, missing the title by only one question. We are so proud of their accomplishment and want to extend a BIG thank you for representing the Turner Center so well.

It was incredible to see the support from our Brain Brawlers and their families. The win was truly a group effort, as the team practices together once a week. We had members travel to cheer on the team at both competitions.
The Brain Brawlers received a certificate for their win at the Regional Play-off competition, which can be seen hanging up in the Turner Lobby by the MySeniorCenter kiosk.

Nikki comes to us most recently from Creative Artists Agency (CAA), one of the largest talent agencies in the world, where she worked in the Music Touring Department. She is an Ohio native and graduate of Kent State University with a degree in Business Administration. She has extensive experience in administration, event planning, volunteerism, and customer service. Nikki loves working with people and is thrilled to be joining our community.

Letter from the Director… I don’t know how many of you know this about me, but Halloween is my favorite holiday, and fall my favorite time of year. I’m looking forward to my second Halloween party (and chili cook off!) with all of you later this month. We’ve come a long way as a center since last year. Hannah wasn’t even with us yet, and, of course, neither was our newest staff member Nikki Plotts, who I hope you all get a chance to meet this month, and the Halloween party would be an perfect opportunity to do so. This year, I think I’ll be trying my hand at both a jack-o-lantern and a return of my bbq chorizo chili. I also want a take a moment to personally congratulate our Brain Brawlers on their performance in the GNRC statewide competition this year. They placed 2nd at the semi-finals, and it all came down to the last question. I’m so proud of our team! If you get a chance, take a look at their first place certificate from the regional games, hanging by the MySeniorCenter Computer. The calendar this month is absolutely packed with great classes such as, Medicare, Islam 101, Scams, and technology. Also, make sure you take some time to get a flu shot on the 11th, as Wal-Mart will again be here for that and other tests and inoculations. You can also join me on Saturday the 21st to attend the Nashville Symphony’s Free Day of Music, one of my favorite events of the year.

Another month has gone by, and we are officially (and gladly) welcoming the fall weather. I just want to extend a BIG thank you to everyone who participated in our programs last month. Your excitement and active involvement keeps us motivated to find new and exciting trips and events. We are diving right into October with plenty of activities for you to get involved in. I’m so excited to announce that we will have two big events right here at the Center. Firstly, we will host a morning concert, complete with coffee and doughnuts, on October 12th. Lee and Karen Anderson are a husband and wife duo who travel the country performing at various active aging communities. They’re “Bringing the Gold Standard Back to the Golden Years” with their jazz performances, so let’s pack the house and give them a big Turner Center welcome. Secondly, we will also host our annual Halloween Potluck and Chili Cook-off. This year’s party will be full of games, music, yummy treats, and, of course, a lot of fun. If you’d like to compete in the chili cook-off, be sure to sign up in the lobby so we know how many entries to expect. Judges will vote on their favorite chili, costume, and painted pumpkin (pumpkins can be painted the day before. See the sign-up in the lobby). The winners of each category will receive prizes. The party will be potluck style so make sure to bring a dish to share with the group and come ready for a spooky good time. In addition to these events, we’ll have a few other programs at the Center this month. Check out our Islam 101 class, Victory Over Crime’s Scam Prevention Presentation, or our Medicare Information Session. The Nashville Public Library’s Bellevue Branch will also come for an open Technology Day to help you with any of your devices. Of course we will also take plenty of trips, so don’t forget to check out all the fun and exciting places we plan on visiting. There’s a program for everyone this month, and we’d love for you to join us for one (or all) of them. As always, my office is open for you at any time, and I can’t wait to spend October with you.

Friday, October 6, 2017 at 9:00 am – “The Bosley Cemetery Removal Project at The Dominican Campus of St. Cecilia Congregation in Nashville, TN” – Jared Barrett, Archaeologist with TRC Environmental Corporation – In 2016 and 2017, Jared Barrett was contacted to assist the St. Cecilia Congregation with the delineation and removal of the Bosley Cemetery at The Dominican Campus. Mr. Barrett will give a brief history and overview of his work at the cemetery, including initial discovery, mapping and delineation of the graves, and their removal. He’ll also speak about Tennessee burial law and what you should do if one should ever discover a cemetery or graves. Program Spotlight
Line Dancing Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to boot, scoot, and boogie into our Line Dancing classes. In October and November, Jeannie Horde will once again be teaching our Beginner's Line Dancing on Wednesdays at 1:00pm. Come learn some moves to classic country songs then dance your way into our Intermediate & Advanced Classes that meet every Friday at 10:30am.
CALLING ALL ARTISTS We have been blown away by the amount of talent we’ve seen in our art classes, and we want to showcase your work at the Center! Bring in one of your favorite masterpieces from our art classes or another project that you’ve made at home, so we can display it on our Member Art Wall located above the puzzles in the Turner Lobby. All art work will be returned after being displayed. Pieces will be hung using clothes pins to avoid any damage to the work.

You won’t want to miss our Haunted Halloween Party, so grab your best costume and join us for an afternoon of fun! Like last year, we will be hosting the annual chili cookoff, so bring in your best recipe for our judges to try. First place will win a prize! If chili isn’t for you, don’t fret. Simply bring in a dish to share with all the other ghosts & ghouls. You will also have the opportunity to vote for your favorite painted pumpkin (pumpkins will be painted the day before), participate in the costume contest, play games, and much more.
Join Our Transportation Program We never want transportation to prevent anyone from getting involved in our community. So for $25.00 a month, we provide a transportation service to qualifying members. This service includes shuttling to and from your home to the Turner Center every Monday & Wednesday, so you can participate in that days activities and socialize with other active older adults. In order to participate, members must live within 5 miles of the Center and will need to provide documentation stating that they are unable to transport themselves.
