The Science and Art of Aromatherapy: Thursday, May 19 at 10:00 am. Faith Fairhope of Tender Touch Therapies will be at the center to discuss the ancient history of essential oils, how they are made, and how they are used in everyday life.

First Aid 101: Thursday, May 26 at 10:00 am. Join us for an informal training in CPR methods and the Heimlich maneuver. This is not a class for CPR Certification, just basic first-aid. Will be taught by YMCA staff.

Letter from the Center Director—Susan Dillingham Happy Spring Everyone!

I know you all have lots of things that you could spend your time doing, but I hope you will look seriously at our May Calendar to see all the wonderful things that we are offering for you to enjoy! We sure would love for more people, especially men, to be involved in all our activities! So, we are offering two new amazing opportunities for those of you with a competitive spirit.

First, we are attempting to get more members who are age 50 and over involved in the Senior Olympics. We would like to see members competing in the individual events, as well as the team events. We are going to hold a Senior Olympics Interest meeting on May 18th at 10:00 am in the Turner Center to explain what it is all about, and to let you hear from former medalists.

And, we are attempting to organize a Golf League. We have an interest sign-up sheet in the Turner Center lobby. If you are interested in playing in this League, please sign up on that interest sheet. If there are enough people interested, we will invite you to an organizational meeting. We would like to see both men and women involved in this 50+ Golf League!

Finally, I want to remind everyone that it is very important that you sign up for the events you would like to participate in! The number signed up helps us make decisions about whether to hold events or not. For events with food, you MUST sign up at least 24 hours ahead of the event so that we can have enough food! And, if you are signed up for an event and find that you can’t attend, please let us know at least 24 hours in advance. This is especially true for events that have a cost if you want to receive a refund!

Letter from the Program Director—Candace W. Jones Hello Everyone, We are excited about all of the wonderful opportunities we have planned for you in May. The Senior Day on the General Jackson is always a favorite, and it fills up quickly, so be sure and secure your seat before it’s too late! We are also taking a trip to one of our favorite Spring spots—The Iris City Gardens! We will be stopping for lunch at a new restaurant in Fairview, so be sure and check out the sign-up sheet. Finally, I want to mention that we have two different dates for both our SMART 911 and Yellow Dot presentations! Both of these programs are beneficial for all ages, but especially older adults! You will find more information about each of these programs in this newsletter as well as on the sign up sheets in the lobby. As always, we appreciate suggestions! If there is somewhere you want to go or something you want to learn about, let me know and I will get in on the calendar!

Friday, May 20, 2016 at 9:00 am (FF1) – “The Rutledge’s and Rutledge Hill: The Family and Their ‘Place’ in Nashville” – Dr. Tara Mitchell Mielnik with the Metro Historical Commission will introduce the fascinating Rutledge family of South Carolina and Tennessee, including Henry Rutledge and his wife, Septima Sexta Middleton Rutledge, and their daughter, Mary Rutledge Fogg. The Rutledge home, Rose Hill, was known as the center of cultural activity in Nashville. A historical and architectural survey will examine the neighborhood that bears their name, Rutledge Hill.

Friday, May 27, 2016 at 9:00 am (FF1) – “Role of Garfish in the Prehistoric Archaeological Record of the Southeastern United States” – Aaron Deter-Wolf, Tennessee State Archaeologist, will inform us about the importance of the prehistoric gar fish that anglers shudder when they catch one on their line today.

Letter from the Member Relations/Volunteer Manager—Jamie McCone Hello Everyone! I am honored to be your Member Relations and Volunteer Manager! I want to let you know about all of our volunteer opportunities! We are looking to add substitute ambassadors who can fill shifts when our regular ambassadors are unable to come in. This would involve you being available to fill either a 9:00 am—12:00 pm shift or a 12:00 pm—3:00 pm shift making phone calls, taking payments and other general office duties. We also need someone with computer savvy to assist with our database management. Our Green Team needs help if you are passionate about recycling. Do you have a special talent to facilitate a program? We can use dance instructors, sewing teachers, artists, discussion group leaders on topics you want to discuss, or coffee talk leaders in the morning for you early risers. Darlene Shadden is a portrait artist and entertainer based in Nashville. She teaches classes at Centennial Art Center working with multiple mediums. Her works have been exhibited in the University Club of Nashville, Tennessee Art League, Cheekwood’s Pineapple Room, Arts at the Airport, Watkins Institute, Commerce Union Bank, the Downtown Art Gallery, Blue Sky Court, White Tiger Gallery, Local Color Gallery, James Ben Gallery, and the Marble Showroom Gallery in Memphis!

Darlene will be teaching you how to work with soft pastels—a dry medium similar to chalk and crayons.

Charcoal Essence Portraits Thursday, May 5 from 1:00 pm—3:30 pm Nashville portrait artist Darlene Shadden will capture your (or your child’s or grandchild’s) likeness with strokes of charcoal. $35 per person— make an appointment with an ambassador or just walk up!

The 39th Annual Bellevue Picnic will be on Saturday, May 21 at Red Caboose Park. This year’s picnic features a myriad of local vendors, unique food trucks, live music, arts and crafts, petting zoo, inflatables, rides and the day will end with a spectacular fireworks show!

FIFTYFORWARD J. L. TURNER CENTER REFUND/CANCELLATION POLICY We require payment in advance if you sign up for a trip, class or program with a fee.

This is the only way to guarantee that your spot is reserved.

Cash or checks made payable to FiftyForward are accepted.

Payments can be processed by an Ambassador or FiftyForward staff member during our business hours - Monday-Friday from 9:00am-3:30pm.

If there is no fee for the activity, please sign up in our lobby.

We greatly appreciate your help!

Cancellation and Refund Policy: The J. L. Turner Center staff reserve the right to cancel a paid activity or trip in the event that minimum enrollment numbers (7 people) are not reached or due to inclement weather. In the event of a cancellation, any member who has paid for the program or trip will be given a refund for the full amount paid.

If you sign up and pay for a trip, and then find that you are unable to attend, we request a 24 hour notice of your cancellation. You will not receive a refund for a trip or paid activity if you do not give us at least a 24 hour notice of cancellation.

In the event that you are sick and are unable to give a 24 hour notice, we are still unable to issue a refund.

Please know, however, that your money is not wasted as it goes toward funding the operations of the center. We are a non-profit organization and depend on donations and program fees to keep running.

If you must cancel a trip, please speak to a FiftyForward staff member. Please do not rely on another member to pass the message along for you. This assures our ability to contact those who are on the waiting list.

PLEASE NOTE: When paying for multiple events, please be prepared to write a separate check for each event. A separate receipt will be written for each event that you pay for, whether you pay with cash or a check.

Thursday, May 12 at 9:30 am Dr. Ming Wang, of Nashville based Wang Vision Cataract and 3D LASIK Center, will present a vision care seminar for members and guests of the FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center.

In this special educational seminar the doctor will offer suggestions on how to care for your vision. Further, he will discuss the most updated state-of-the-art LASIK technology available whenever corrective procedures are necessary. He will also accept individual questions from the audience and all attendees will receive a gift certificate good for discounts toward the enhancement procedures that he performs.
