The Turner Center hosted their first annual Preview Party for members and the community. Those in attendance learned about the Turner Center’s growth in the past year, their unique partnership with the YMCA, and got a sneak peek at some of their goals for 2018. With a crowd of 96 people, it was an exciting afternoon full of lots of laughs, plenty of raffle prizes, and some great information!

We had a lot of fun decorating coffee mugs for Valentine’s Day. Thank you so much to Tricia Jones & Donna Di Mola for providing the materials and leading such a fun craft! We loved spending Valentine’s Day with you at our “Spread the Love” Benefit Concert. Bill Vitou and Alex Harvey performed incredible love songs for our members, and all proceeds were donated to Thistle Farms.

The Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: Thursday, April 19th • Linda Wynn, assistant director at the Tennessee Historical Commission, and a prominent scholar on Civil Rights history, will present Dr. King’s accomplishments and the impact he has made on society. The talk coincides with the 50th Anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination on April 4, 1968.

Letter from the Office & Volunteer Manager… We have almost made it through the winter months, and I don’t know about you but I’m ready for spring weather! BIG thank you to our Ambassador, Kathy, for facilitating our Valentine’s Day card service project this month for Meals on Wheels clients. The Director of the Meals on Wheels Program was blown away by the cards and all the creativity and heart that was put into them. For this month’s service project, we will be heading to St. Luke’s Community House to work in their food bank. We will be unloading boxes, packing food, and spending the day in their warehouse. They are really looking forward to having us out! In addition to the service project, I will also be hosting an afternoon of cookie decorating. It’s a huge hobby of mine, and I’m thrilled to spend an afternoon with you all! We will be going over watercolor icing techniques and how to fill and use piping bags to create patterns. All materials will be provided for you, including icing, cookies, and utensils. If you’re interested in attending, you can sign up with an ambassador or staff member. As always, if you’re interested in getting involved with FiftyForward the office doors are always open, and I would love to talk to you about opportunities at the Center. Thank you,

Letter from the Director… Greetings Friends, I need to start this month by saying thank you, and farewell, to our erstwhile Program Director, Hannah Lee. As most of you know, Hannah has begun work with Second Harvest Food Bank. Hannah has done wonderful work in her time with us, and her presence will be very missed here at Turner. She is well loved by our community here, and I hope you all join me in wishing her the best in her new chapter. Rest assured, we will work diligently to find a new member of our team, who will be able to fill her (rather estimable) shoes. We have also all worked hard to make sure we won’t be missing a beat here at Turner while we are in transition, and we have a full and exciting slate of programs this month we hope you will join us for. One event I’m very excited about is that we will again have a big St. Patrick’s Day bash with authentic Irish music and delicious lunch of shepherd’s pie. Letter from the Program Director… It’s hard to find the right words to explain how much this Center and all of you mean to me, which makes it even harder to announce that my time at FiftyForward has come to an end. This Center and all of you have helped me grow both professionally & personally, and with this growth came new opportunities. I’m excited to tell you that I’ve been offered the chance to take the next step in my career in a position at Second Harvest Food Bank. But as excited as I am to take on this new adventure, it certainly is bittersweet to say goodbye to all of you. Since my first day with FiftyForward, I quickly learned that the Turner Center isn’t just another senior community. It’s a family. Over the past year, I’ve had the opportunity to get to know so many of you beyond the programs and events we’ve hosted. Many of my favorite moments were made when you’ve stopped by the office to chat or simply sitting in the lobby or over a shared meal when you’ve graciously told me your stories, invited me to tell my own, and made me feel valued and loved beyond measure. Your kindness, humor, and constant encouragement has made my time at the Turner Center an incredible experience. As I move on to this next step in my career, I will forever be grateful for the relationships I’ve built, the conversations I’ve had, and the memories I’ve made at the J.L. Turner Center. I may not be the one planning your events and activities anymore, but I will certainly be thinking of you often and carrying the lessons you’ve taught me to my next position. I wish I could put into words how appreciative I am for all you, but all I can truly say is… Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this community. I’m truly going to miss it.

The Old Woman’s Home was renamed the West End Home for Ladies in 1984 and moved to Vanderbilt Place in Nashville. FRIDAY FLICKS Friday, March 30th at 1:00pm Free Popcorn and Drinks A thrilling true story begins at the precipice of WWII as Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman) must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany or standing firm to fight for liberty and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.
In partnership with the Frist and their new exhibit by Nick Cave, we will be engaging in a 3 month long community art project titled, Blanket Statement. During this project we will create three beaded blankets that will be used in a live performance at the Schermerhorn in April. Every Thursday from January-March, we will work on these blankest from 10:00-11:00am in the conference room. Stop by for any (or all) of these dates to learn more about the project, participate, and engage with the FiftyForward community.

Volunteers, Jaci Kitch & Mary Lou Pierce, are always available to help you get started or teach new techniques. Simply stop by the Conference Room any time between 9:00am & 12:00pm to learn something new, get creative, and socialize with a wonderful community.
The Turner Center & Bellevue YMCA Active Older Adult program have partnered together to bring you local health & wellness vendors. The fair will feature 10-15 booths, including Eat Well Nashville, Benchmark Physical Therapy, Franklin Juice & more!

Dine Out to Donate! Thanks to our fundraising chair, Matt Creekmore, we are introducing Dine out to Donate events this year.
