Letter from the Office Assistant… The thing you are ripening toward is the fruit of your life. It will make you bright inside, no matter what you are outside. It is a shining thing. Stewart Edward White One of the greatest pleasures of working here at FiftyForward is getting to know our members, especially our oldest members. I feel like I am in the presence of Zen masters when I spend time with those who have reached age ninety and above. They may have not studied Zen, but I feel like the wisdom they offer is the wisdom of sages and mystics. It’s not about giving wise advice—it’s a matter of being in their presence and sensing their appreciation of even the smallest gifts life offers. They continue to embrace life despite challenges and losses. They show me that growing older brings hidden riches, if I am willing to open my heart and allow life to ripen in me. Another way I open my heart and mind to life is through practicing meditation. I started meditating seriously in 2009, and it changed the way I look at life. It also helped me make better choices when faced with life’s challenges. I’m honored to offer an introductory workshop on meditation on Monday, March 25. I’ll describe a bit of my background, introduce you to the basics, offer some resources for further study, and then culminate with an experience of meditating together. There is great power in a group of people committed to meditating together. You’ll discover that meditation can be as simple as watching a sunset or as deep as spending an hour in a meditation group. I hope this resource will help you tap into your own inner wisdom and ripen into a fuller experience of life. Though I am sad to see Derek leave our center, I am excited for his plans and know he has a bright future ahead of him. He has made such a great contribution. I’m grateful for his leadership and how fun it has been to work with him. I wish him the best as he returns to his Michigan roots.
Sincerely, Candy Paull Office Assistant, FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center
Big thank you to our sponsor, Cigna Healthspring, for their continuous support of the Turner Center!
Friendly Reminder Please check your schedule prior to signing up for events, or be sure to cross your name off of the list if you find you are unable to attend. If you do plan to attend, please sign up! This is the only way we are able to prepare for the day of events or get ahold of you if there is a schedule change. Thank you for your cooperation!
We want to thank everyone who has generously donated plastic bags to help our homeless mats service project. At this time we have reached our allotted amount of space to hold bags so we are no longer accepting donations. Again, we appreciate everyone’s generosity and we will be sure to let you know once we have worked through our current inventory.
Thank you to Edward Jones for being an Executive Level Sponsor at our Fundraiser and for their support of the Turner Center.

Letter from the Director… Goodbyes are always a bittersweet part of life, and it is with mixed emotions that I announce to you all that my time as the Director of the FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center will come to an end this month. I am relocating to my hometown in Michigan, and looking to further my education and refocus my career on social entrepreneurship and economic development. These past 2 & ½ years serving this amazing community have been an invaluable chapter of my life. I’m proud of the work we’ve all done together to grow this center to what it is today. In my tenure, with the help of amazing staff, volunteers, members, community partners, and sponsors, we have seen significant increases in membership, daily attendance, programs, and member satisfaction. Together, we have successfully launched our first gala benefit, started service projects, held events with over 100 in attendance, performed on stage at the Schermerhorn, took our Rhythm Band on the road, won regional trivia competitions, started an Advisory Council, created great art, danced, laughed, cried and lived life together as a community. I hope that you’ve found I leave this place better than I found it, and that I hand it to the next person with a full heart and a knowledge that there is an amazing future for this center. It’s been a pleasure getting to know every one of you, and I thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives. I also want to thank our amazing Advisory Council led by first Bob Allen and then Matt Creekmore for partnering with me. Our invaluable Ambassadors who are the heartbeat and face of the center. My team Nikki Plotts & Candy Paull (and Brandy Lamb & Hannah Lee before them) who care so deeply for our members, work tirelessly, and make me look good. The staff at the Bellevue Y who have been incredible partners, always made me feel welcome, and worked with us to give the best programming possible. “Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.” ― Desmond Tutu
Best Regards, Derek Stogner Director, FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center
Letter from the Program Director… Let’s hope that this Spring weather hits us in March! I know I am looking forward to getting out of the house and getting into that beautiful Nashville spring weather. Now that we (hopefully) don’t have any inclement weather to worry about we will be hitting the pavement again with our day trips. Starting off the month with one of our annual trips to the Southern Women’s Show at the Music City Center. Come browse the booths varying from beauty to home and garden to clothing & accessories. Additionally, we will be heading to Bowie Nature Park for a park overview and guided hike with one of their Naturalists. We will also be headed to the famous Madame Tussauds to check out some of their celebrity wax figures, and for your fix of Tennessee history check out the Lotz House Museum for a tour of the Civil War Era home. I’m also extremely excited to head over to Thistle Farms for a morning volunteering with them followed by lunch at their café. The spots are extremely limited for this opportunity so be sure to sign up quickly! We have exciting things happening at the Center as well. Marge Wozny will be back for two laughter yoga classes this month, and of course our St. Patrick’s Day luncheon celebration on Thursday, March 14th. Check out our programming table for all the exciting programming we have going on this month! I also want to thank Derek for all of the support he has given me in the past year+ and for his dedication to FiftyForward. We want to ensure that things will continue to run smoothly here as we search for a replacement. Please feel free to stop by if you have any questions or concerns. I would love to answer them the best I can.
Thank you,
Nikki Plotts Program Director, FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center
