On April 20th, we celebrated National Volunteer Month by honoring our over 30 dedicated and passionate Turner Center volunteers with an appreciation luncheon. As a volunteer organization, we rely on our incredible volunteers to provide our wide range of programs and services.

FiftyForward Executive Director, Janet Jernigan, joined us as our special guest. She praised those assembled for stepping up during the times of transition at the center and opened up the floor for our volunteers to share their stories of service. Rise Tucker, leader of the Retro Rhythms member band and Ambassador, was the recipient of the Robert J. Franz Memorial Award for Volunteer Service and Advocacy. Rise is passionate about the Turner Center. and the importance of staying active and involved as you age, which she shared in her moving acceptance speech. You can see that passion in action by attending our Retro Rhythms Concert here at the center on June 16th at 10:30 AM.

GET INVOLVED Volunteer Opportunities Note from the Volunteer Manager… I hope everyone has had a wonderful May. It’s amazing how quickly Spring has flown by, and I can’t believe it’s already time to welcome the hot summer season. For the past two months, we have been hosting a snack drive for the East Nashville Hope Exchange. I want to thank everyone who has participated in this project. We collected more than 5 tote bags worth of yummy treats for their summer program!
In addition, last month we volunteered at Second Harvest Food Bank to help organize their food donations. In just two hours, we helped sort and package 8,741 lbs. of food, which equals about 7,284 meals for families in need. Thank you to all our volunteers! For our service project this month, we will be creating 4th of July themed welcome cards for the guests of the American Cancer Society’s Nashville Hope Lodge. The Hope Lodge provides free housing to cancer patients and a caregiver during their course of treatment. The Lodge not only offers patients with a place to stay, but it also provides a supportive and safe environment where patients can focus on wellness. The cards we make will be distributed throughout their 41 rooms. Then, Stay tuned for our July service project, as we will be providing, prepping, and serving lunch to the guests of the Hope Lodge. We are so excited to work with such an incredible organization, and I hope you’ll join us for this 2-part service project. I’m so encouraged by the amount of time and dedication all our volunteers dedicate to the Turner Center and the Nashville Community. It’s been incredible to see the difference you are making. Who likes to par-tea? We like to par– tea! We had a wonderful time at our Mother’s Day Tea. It was a lovely day filled with scrumptious tea sandwiches, cookies, and tea in real china cups! Sam Farkas and Kent Toalson of the Green Hills Guitar Studio accompanied the event with some wonderful jazzy tunes.

Letter from the Director… The summer months are also a start of new beginnings for us at FiftyForward, as we cycle our fiscal calendar in such a way that July 1st is the beginning of our “year”. We are working hard towards further improving our center with new services and programs, easy to access information, and continuous evaluations on how we can better serve you. I hope you all know my door is open for any suggestions or comments you may have as well. One thing to look forward to in June is the new Turner Center phone system. You will now be able to call the Turner Center directly. We will publish the new phone number as soon as we receive it, so look for this information in your emails and around the center.
Speaking of email and technology, we’d love for more of you to connect with us through those channels. In particular, this month I’d like to spotlight our Facebook page, where we post a lot of great photos and videos from our events and hope to use more for announcements. We have a month full of good times planned for you, and we hope there will be plenty of sunshine too. One event that is sure to be a great time is “The Dancing Boots Mystery” Tour & Concert. Our very own Retro Rhythms Band is pairing up with our Turner Center Line Dancers and other special guests to bring you music, dancing, and a skit that includes a mystery - ”Who left their dancing boots on the bus?” Come solve the mystery! I am thrilled to announce that I will be cooking with you once again, and Crepes are on the menu. In class, we will learn how to make these simple and delicious French style pancakes. Next, we will take a Brunchin’ Around trip to The Perch Creperie & Coffeehouse to explore the many ways to enjoy them. In April, we took a trip to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab, and this month we are set to tour the Metro Nashville Police Department Crime Lab. We hope you can join us. Another exciting trip we have this month is a visit to the brand new Madam Tussaud’s Wax Museum at Opry Mills with lunch at the Aquarium Restaurant. We will also be taking our second trip to the Bluebird Café for the Senior Show, which includes music, coffee, and donuts. Our monthly hike will be at the Stones River Greenway, followed by lunch at the Hermitage House Smorgasbord. We have an amazing music lesson opportunity for you this month. Instructor, Sam Farkas, from the Green Hills Guitar Studio is holding a 5-week Music Lesson Workshop on Thursdays for Ukulele and Guitar. Not only is the workshop free, but we also have some instruments available for you to use. We hope you will give it a try! I hope you will join this month as we celebrate Father’s Day at our monthly Bunco gathering and a special luncheon with poker, pizza, and root beer!
