World Religions Tour The FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center is embarking on a tour of world religions. Join us each month as we spotlight a different world religion by taking a tour of its house of worship and learn more about the tenets of the faith. We are kicking our ‘world tour’ off in June by visiting the Congregation Ohabai Sholom on Harding Pike on Tuesday, June 28 at 9:15 AM. Cantor Tracy Fishbein will serve as our tour guide to show us the oldest and largest Jewish house of worship in Nashville as well as discuss the Jewish faith. Lunch after at Anatolia Turkish Restaurant.

Lifeline Screening Event: Thursday, June 30 from 8:30 AM—5:00 PM. The Lifeline Crew will be back in June to do several cardiovascular tests, all at a deeply discounted rate.

Letter from the Center Director—Susan Dillingham Hello Everyone!

We have so many fun and educational things lined up for you to do in June! I hope you are as excited as we are about the June Calendar and that you will participate in as many things as possible!

Speaking of participation, we have had a pretty serious problem in April and May. It takes hours for us to plan and schedule events and for Candace to secure speakers, teachers and facilitators to come out and donate their time to conduct our events. We base whether to have those people come out or not on the number of people that sign up for the event.

The day before an event is to occur we call everyone that is signed up to remind them to be there. If you tell our volunteer that you will be there it is very important that you do indeed come. It is embarrassing for us to have people come to our Center to donate their time and then to have few, if any, people show up. So, I am asking that you make sure that you check your calendar before signing up for an event, and when you do sign up for one, to put it in your calendar and to make every possible effort to attend. We want your lives to be rich and full and we work very hard to bring you many opportunities to make that happen. Please help us by signing up for events and making a commitment to be there!

On another note, we have moved the Lending Library to the Computer Room. We have the doors of the Computer Room/Library open at all times that the Center is open, so feel free to go in and borrow and/or donate books.

If our Center is not open, and the doors happen to be locked, you may ask a YMCA Staff member and they can get the keys to unlock the doors. We hope that you will enjoy this change!

And, finally, we now have the kitchen available for members use from 9:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Please come and stay all day at the Center and bring your breakfast, lunch, and or snacks and store them in the kitchen. And, you can use the kitchen to eat as well! We are going to have a new addition to our Calendar in June called Connection Café. The room location of that Connection Café will change, but it is always available for your use regardless of where it is located. In this Café we will have tables and chairs set up where you can enjoy your breakfast, lunch and/or snacks. We will have various decks of cards, magazines and some board games. Please come in and enjoy time with other members at your convenience.

Letter from the Program Director—Candace W. Jones Hello Everyone, Summer is upon us as we move into June! I hope you have plenty of sunscreen and have dusted off your flip flops! We are excited to offer many exciting trips and activities to keep you busy and out of the hot sun at least some of the time! Back by popular demand, we are once again taking a tour of the Fox TV Station on June 7! We are also looking forward to having Karen and Michael Elley back to perform at our June Birthday Potluck on Wednesday, June 15 at 11:30 AM. Make plans to come and hear Karen’s story of being “touched by an angel” and sing along as Michael plays guitar and sings inspirational music.

Don’t forget to keep healthy while having all of this fun! We are happy to welcome back Lifeline Health Screenings so that you have the opportunity to get multiple cardiovascular tests done at a fraction of their regular prices! Don’t delay making an appointment as they fill up quickly.

Friday, June 10, 2016 at 9:00 AM – “Special Bridge Program: Tennessee’s Toll Bridges, 1927-1947″ – Dr. Tammy Allison Sellers, Historic Preservation Program Manager with the Tennessee Department of Transportation, will talk about Governor Austin Peay’s declaration in 1927 to the Tennessee state legislature to construct toll bridges over Tennessee’s major waterways.

Friday, June 17, 2016 at 9:00 AM – “The Hermitage Hotel: A Century of Hospitality” – Tom Vickstrom, Author and Historian, will describe the magnificence of the Hermitage Hotel and the many dimensions of its history that has intrigued him to dig deeply into available sources for facts and photos of the hotel’s journey across the 20th century.

Letter from the Member Relations/Volunteer Manager—Jamie McCone Hey Everyone!

I cannot believe it is June already. I want to first thank everyone who attended last month’s meeting. We discussed a great deal of new and exciting things happening with our volunteers. I would like to inform you about some opportunities that we have for you all to give back to our wonderful community and FiftyForward. We still need a few more people to sign up for our Green Team (one time a week). This volunteer position involves you monitoring the Bellevue Recycling Site and reporting any major issues you find to the Turner Center Director. I am also starting a New Member Welcome Committee. I would like the members of this committee to call and encourage the new members to come down and join in some new programs. I would also like for this committee to try and set up a time and date to meet the new members at the Turner Center to do an exercise class together or attend a program. That way we are making all new members feel comfortable, since they know at least a few friendly faces. If you are interested in one of these groups please come and see me! Have a wonderful June!

NOTICE ON ROOM ASSIGNMENTS: The FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center strives to provide varied programming to meet the individual needs of its members. As a result, there are often multiple events planned at the same time on the same day. The Turner Center staff works hard to maintain consistent room assignments to avoid confusion; however, there are some circumstances that require us to be flexible when scheduling programs in our spaces. There will be occasions when a regularly scheduled program will be required to move into a different room to accommodate a special event. The Turner Center staff reserves the right to make such changes to room assignments, and we will offer advance notice when possible.

How to Bounce Back When Challenges Come: Wednesday, June 22 at 9:00 AM. Join our Center Director in this fun and interactive workshop where you will learn what the research-based factors for building resiliency (the ability to bounce back) in your life really are. Life is always going to bring challenges, and this workshop will show you how to protect yourself when they do.

Guided Meditation Lisa Ernst is a meditation teacher, artist and founder of One Dharma Nashville. In her teaching, Lisa emphasizes both transformational insight and everyday awakening as an invitation to embrace all of the path’s possibilities. She offers private meditation training, classes and workshops and she teaches retreats nationally.

Lisa has been meditating for over 25 years in the Zen and Vipassana traditions. She received teaching authorization in the Thai Forest lineage of Ajahn Chah, Jack Kornfiled and Trudy Goodman. As a practicing visual artist Lisa incorporates Dharma into contemplative photography and writing. She also enjoys taking meditation and mindfulness into diverse settings like prisons, non profits and universities.

Lisa especially enjoys teaching students how to work with open ended, unanswered life questions that can’t be solved through traditional logic. This practice of reflective thought and opening to not-knowing is the subject of a Buddhist Geeks podcast. Lisa focuses on working with questions in meditation practice to support living from our truest intentions.

Bring your device with you and lean about the following: How to use your phone, how to take a selfie, how to better understand your technology, tips on purchasing technology, how to set up/use Facebook, email on a smart phone, understand and use apps, take and send photos and learn how technology can help you stay connected with family and friends.

The FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center depends on solid partnerships with organizations in the community to continue scheduling quality programming, and providing an audience is a way for us to strengthen those partnerships. If you sign up to participate in a program, it is imperative that you keep your commitment and attend the program. At the very least, we ask that you let us know in advance if you can’t make it. We will be implementing a Program Participation Policy in the coming weeks outlining expectations and procedures for program participation.
