A group of members volunteered to serve lunch at the Knowles Center to Veteran’s and their families during RSVP’s annual Veteran’s Christmas Party.
We had a wonderful time honoring all of the Turner Center volunteers at our Christmas Appreciation Luncheon. Our Center would not be as successful without these wonderful men and women. We are so grateful for their time and dedication to FiftyForward.

Letter from the Office & Volunteer Manager…
Happy January! Thank you to everyone who came out to the Knowles Center to wrap gifts and serve lunch for the members of the Vet Center last month. It was great to get out and do some good for the people of Nashville. I also want to give a BIG thank you to everyone who donated to the toy drive—we had an amazing response! For this month’s service project we will be heading over to Harpeth Valley Elementary School to read to a kindergarten classroom. The students and staff are extremely excited to have us, and I am excited about teaming up with the school for this project and potentially more in the future. Please feel free to stop by our office if you have any suggestions for upcoming projects in 2018 or if you are interested in any current volunteer opportunities— we have an Ambassador shift open on Thursday afternoons, and we are always looking for volunteer drivers for our day trips and Transportation group. Thank you,
Nikki Plotts Office & Volunteer Manager, FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center

Letter from the Director…
I’m excited to share some news with you about the new year. We have officially formed our Advisory Council to serve you as members of the J.L. Turner Center. The Council’s primary focus will be fundraising, community outreach, and getting the center accredited by the NISC (National Institute of Senior Centers). Only 3% of senior/lifelong learning centers in the country are nationally accredited, and 5 of those are FiftyForward Centers. We strive for excellence here at the Turner center, and I want us to be the 6th. It’s a lengthy and thorough process, and there will be times for many of you to get involved, so stay tuned. The Advisory Council also represents you, the members, and are a resource you can go to with questions and concerns. Bob Allen, the facilitator of the Bellevue History and Genealogy Club, is serving as Chair. Matt Creekmore of Edward Jones Financial is serving as Vice Chair and Chair of the Fundraising Committee. Kathy Cleveland, our Wednesday Morning Ambassador, is the Chair of the Outreach Committee. Also serving are Brenda Butler, Maxine Caruth, Dawn Formosa, and Tim O’Brien. I am thrilled with the team that we have assembled and am looking forward to working with them to take the Turner Center to even greater heights. Best regards, Derek Stogner Director, FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center Letter from the Program Director… I’m so excited to welcome in the New Year with all of you. 2017 was full of wonderful times, great memories, and plenty of new opportunities and friends at the Turner Center…and we plan on making 2018 even better.
We know that sometimes it can be tough to get out and about in the winter weather, so this month we are hosting plenty of events and speakers right here at the Center. I’m very excited about two great FiftyForward programs we have planned for you. First, join Janice Judd to learn more about the long-term travel opportunities available in 2018. Then, join the staff for the first Turner Center Preview party. We’ll give a sneak-peek into our plans for the upcoming year, get your feedback, and even have some raffle prizes. It should be an exciting afternoon, and we’d love for you to be a part of it. We’ll also have some great speakers visit the Center. Joann Scalf will host a documentary and discussion on NPT’s newest Aging Matters Video, Nutrition and Aging. Then, join us for a presentation about the Tennessee Elephant Sanctuary to learn about the threats against and current efforts to protect elephants. Of course we have plenty of other fun activities and trips planned for January, so be sure to check out the rest of the newsletter and/or our sign-up table in the Center’s lobby. And, as always, feel free to stop by the office at any time if you have questions or just want to say hello. Our doors are always open. Happy New Year,
Hannah Lee Program Director, FiftyForward J.L. Turner Center

BELLEVUE HISTORY & GENEALOGY GROUP Thank you for supporting the 2017 Bellevue History & Genealogy Programs. We will be taking a short recess from our weekly Friday speaker events. We have two movies scheduled for January 2018 & will resume our regular weekly speakers on February 2nd The Spanish American War: First Intervention on Thursday, January 4th at 1:00 pm “It has been a splendid little war” Secretary of State John Hay wrote of the Spanish-American War which marked the United States triumphant experience onto the world stage. Over the course of 113 historic days in 1898, the United States established itself for the first time as a true international power, expanding American reach around the globe. The major battles of the war were fought simultaneously in Cuba and the Philippines, proving the might of a newly reorganized U.S. Navy. From the sinking of the USS Maine to the Battle of Manilla Bay and the Rough Riders’ legendary charge up San Juan Hill, some of the most iconic stories and images of the new American superpower were forged in the short war. Goodnight Mr. Tom on Friday, January 26th at 9:00 am Tom Oakley (John Thaw) is a cantankerous old man who, at the start of World War II, finds his life irrevocably changed when little Willie Beech (Nick Robinson) is evacuated from London and sent to live with him. Willie is a quiet, sad child with a disturbing past, but through Tom's friendship and attention, Willie's anxieties are smoothed away and a strong bond develops between this unlikely pair. Friday, February 2, 2018 at 9:00 am – “East Tennessee Bridge Burners” – Richard White, Curator of 18th & 19th Century Tennessee History at the Tennessee State Museum, will discuss the guerrilla operations carried out during the Civil War by Union sympathizers in Confederate-held East Tennessee in 1861. The operations called for the destruction of nine strategic railroad bridges followed by an invasion of the area by Union Army forces from southeastern Kentucky.
